I clicked the video because I have used a library card to get some great perks in the past but those programs ended. So I’m hoping you will show me something new
the library is the government doing something right: providing information and knowledge for free for anyone who wants it. Plus, you're taxed to pay for it, so might as well use it.
@@newagain9964 Are you kidding me? You don't think libraries are important to a functioning civil society? Maybe if more people used libraries we would HAVE a functioning civil society.
@@newagain9964 That's a very poor argument. You simply cherry-picked that which you think makes your argument valid, while completely neglecting everything that proves you wrong. I suggest you go to your local library and pick up a book on logic, so you can learn how absurd that argument is.
My library system recently built and opened a whole library branch dedicated to nothing but food. The library has test kitchens in it, where they offer free cooking classes by area chefs. The library also offers all of the services mentioned in this video.
As a librarian with an MLIS degree, working in & loving the library field, I am very grateful to see more and more people like you recognizing the incredibly underrated merits & benefits that a library offers. Thank you for this delightful video. I hope sharing & talking about this video will help others I know see the light as well. Good work.
oh this means a lot to me to get your validation!! YES I hope you do share it, perhaps there's a newsletter you guys do :) I'm really happy with the response of people here who never thought about getting a library card and now are going out to get one!
@@NomadOverNormal I actually shared a link to this video on my Twitter, because I'm part a younger video game community that knows I'm a librarian, so any chance I can reasonably get to show these high school/college age gamers about how awesome libraries are, I take it. So thank you for this awesome, validating video. :D
As a fellow Librarian, I have to say it's REALLY weird to add in "with an MLIS degree". Average people aren't going to know what in the world you're talking about and it doesn't give you any other qualifications in the field of library knowledge. It's not just you, there's a few other comments with the MLIS degree note as well. It's just weird to see that's a common thing online lol
@@GummyDinosaursify I apologize. I wasn't trying to sound pretentious, and I certainly don't believe that any librarian without such a degree is less qualified to be one. Speaking just for myself, I'm used to mentioning the degree mainly because most people I talk to are not aware that it exists, so when I mention that I have one I feel like it shows my personal level of interest in the field, & it's an accomplishment I'm personally proud of. I can see where you're coming from, but I also don't necessarily see a problem with mentioning the degree. We probably see this from different points of view.
@@NomadOverNormal bro spotify is free, you just need scripts that block the ad servers. there's even apk patchers to give you free premium on mobile Lol
I'm a former librarian in your library system BCLS, and I'm so happy you are enlightening the public who pay taxes for good service and materials. I'm still reading my audiobooks! Now the library prints out how much you saved by borrowing!

As someone who works at a library. This is INCREDIBLY important. With that said, certain libraries will partner with specific services (Some libraries might use Libby, some libraries might use CloudLibrary, or Palace, Hoopla, etc). So you'll need to check in with them, ask the folks at the front desk, or see if they have any pamphlets. All in all, PLEASE GO AND CHECK OUT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY!!

Oh, so it's the same bullshit as the steaming services and "competing services", just in a different package. Got it. Remember folks, if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. This goes for libraries too. They SEEM like a good deal on the surface but corproations would NEVER let them _actually_ be a good deal.
@@JamesR624 Not really? Just certain services are available in certain places?(libraries may have different budgets, different locations, different local laws for cities/states, etc etc) .Idk why you're willing to hop to such a negative conclusion about library services that are free and can help people. Calm down and get off the Internet. Go read a book and go to your local library.
@@JamesR624 Definitely recommend you visit your local library before you judge. Unlike what corporations do with streaming, things like Libby and Hoopla are 100% free (libraries get their funding from city taxes, unlike corporations that do the fake "free" system before pulling the rug out from under their customers). Definitely agree with OP - breaks from your phone/screens are good for you and so is checking out your local library (and if you are really obsessed with your phone, libraries have free WiFi).

Especially if the movies are old you can find websites that offer the movie for free if you look up "*movie title* free". it is illegal to run the websites but not to use them, to keep in mind

As a former digital librarian, I'm so happy you posted this video. Not every library is going to have all these services, but even if they don't, your patronage keeps your local library going!
I recently started using my local library, and it’s great! I checked out a Chromebook for a friend, I use their printer, I do lots of my work there (instead of spending $5 on coffee like you mentioned), and it’s only a mile down the road. Plus the people there are so kind. I didn’t realize there was news, music, and audio books too!
Great video @NomadOverNormal 📚 A local library saved my life when I lived alone & was deeply depressed . . . I visited nearly every day and found human contact, advice from the reference librarians, great books & free music! The uplift I felt walking to the library & excitement walking home with my selections brought me a hint of joy in the midst of a ‘very dark night of the soul’
Glad I saw this video suggestion and your comment. I'm currently in "that place" and this is an excellent suggestion to start to break the cycle. Thank you!
I have 4 library cards that I use to rent Audiobooks and e-Reading files though Libby. Because of your channel I had NO idea all of these options were available though my local libraries!! I checked my local library and found out not only do they have all the features you explained but they even have free state park passes!! OMG! They have classes to help get you started in college and prep for SATs. You, sir, may have changed peoples lives with this information. Thank you for posting!
Psst go get Brooklyn and Queens cards as well. You can go to the same museum 3x a year instead of just once. Or go with a larger group. (You may already know this but NYC is weird and has three separate library systems, all of which participate in Culture Pass)
You are spot on with your excitement of what the library has to offer. And yes it is free to use as a “consumer”, but does cost money to operate these offerings. That is where your tax dollars come in and politicians love to say “libraries are great”. They also will cut the support (dollars) if they have something that interests them more. As a user and tax payer and voter you can influence them by communicating to them how important the library services are to you. Your library professionals will be more than glad to assist you with that. BTW I spent 25 years as a library trustee for my library system and I have many wonderful memories. Good luck to you.
Wonderful... Someday when I make a follow up video I'll make sure to include how we can support our libraries with a vote & ensure our taxes are going to great causes like these programs.
I am a healthy senior with a lifelong love of libraries. If my lovely wife was a librarian I could firmly say she would be even more perfect. Librarians have helped me in business in my twenties and throughout my professional career. Sure we can all Google things but librarians know how to due research in ways most of us can not fathom. If I sound like I have a librarian crush it is because I do. Knowledge lives on.
@Danderlion Hi Danderlion, I started a small commercial cleaning service after high school to earn enough to pay my way through college. I came from a loving, blue collar, uneducated family. I was a good student who skipped a grade in junior high. However, I was ignorant of financial things, colleges, how to advertise in business and so much more. I had no guidance or support from home and had to find out on my own. It was daunting. Librarians are so much more than the Dewey decimal system. They are literally experts in how to research. They helped me learn marketing, and research strategies. While going through college I grew my little business to employ 13 people. I made a salary greater than my folks combined. I wound up with two degrees, one in psychology and one in computer science. I sold my business in my twenties when I started working in computers. I had a wonderful career and was successful. I was fortunate to love going to work everyday. I truly feel those librarians took an interest in me and encouraged my enthusiasm. Directly or indirectly they taught me to think differently and question my own perceptions. So, go hug a librarian today.
My mom has been a librarian my whole life! During the summer when I was off school, I’d just come with her to work all the time and just hang out in the library all day. They’ve been so underrated for so long, it’s nice to see them getting more love these days :)
YA librarian here and there’s also so many cool resources that are in library only. We have a 3D printer, small recording studio, instruments, drawing tablets, sewing machine, etc. in our teen center that teens can use whenever.
As someone who’s almost done pursuing an MLIS (Master’s in Information & Library Science) thank you for listing out all the things public libraries offer! I can’t say the library I’m interning at has every service yours does (like the seed bank), although I have heard of libraries really catering to their community in what they usually need (like borrowing cooking tools). Public libraries also make sure to offer tools and resources that assist those with disabilities know as Assistive Technology (ATs). Again, my library is definitely not as sophisticated as other public libraries (and those with higher budgets and/or communities of people with specific disabilities) but we offer a lot of tools for those who have trouble reading small worlds. We offer a selection of large text books, a machine that enlarges regular text books, and BARD materials (Braille and Audio Reading Download) through the Library of Congress. So again, thank you for highlighting libraries are places people can come to when they want specific resources, I feel like a lot of people aren’t aware what they can get out of their local libraries!
Wow thank you so much for entering this field!! That’s so exciting and wishing you the best of luck. So happy to have made a video that was right up your alley and could strike that chord :)
@@sylvienguyen1010 Nope! Only a Masters! Depending on where I want to work (like school libraries), I may need certification, but for the most part, making good connections and working my way from volunteering has been pretty successful for me!
How's it hard? I just had to go to my local library, ask for a card, sign a form they gave me, then show them my ID and boom I got a library card and with no cost unless you count state tax.@@newagain9964
I completely agree. I go a step further and donate the money that I save from not buying books and not getting subscriptions, to the library. I get to write off my donation, save space (I've always lived in city centers with limited space), learn something new, and find community which is a win, win, win, win, win.. for me.
Yeah, I love to read. Had an extensive library when I was living just outside of my downtown area, where I had so much space. Then I moved walking distance to downtown and had to donate all of my books. But I still wanted to keep reading. So, I just make a list of all of the new books that I read each year, add their costs around tax time. Then I do the same for all of the other services that I use like museum passes, around where I live we can borrow WiFi hubs and get small business help, etc and I donate those amounts too. Also where I live, you can write off 100% of your donations on your taxes as long as you donate the minimum amount, which I always do. @@NomadOverNormal
You just saved my life, man. I was complaining about this subscriptions all the time but I couldn't find any replacement for entertaining. Kanopy was a definite life saver.
I recently discovered that my library has sewing machines and saw horses, circular saws, yoga equipment, baking pans, and so much more to check out. It’s so cool.
I've been trying to quit using subscription services because I'm a student, so I don't have much money to spend. I think there's a pretty good library near my college that I could go to, so I'll check it out! (another option is piracy- I'm not saying you should, I'm just saying its out there)
Check out your University’s library as well! You can always double up, because two libraries gives you more options. Then when you go back to your home town, get a third - the real pro tip
@@NomadOverNormal There is a library interchange system. Sorry I forget the name. But, if your library is in it, it essentially allows you to borrow books (and other services) from every other library in the system. Even physical books .. which they will have shipped to your local library .. for free.
When I tell people my major is Library Science the second most common question I get is, "Will that really still be relevant in the future?" And I always answer Yes. Libraries are free resources, a community/activity center, a safe space after school, and a hub for internet access. As long as libraries keep adapting to the needs of everyday people, they will be relevant.
A few of my childhood friends have degrees in Library Science and I think it is really cool. I don't have the time to get a Master's degree so I just volunteer at the library instead.
It's amazing how much libraries have adapted to meet the needs of users in the 21st century. There are many private companies with shareholders which have failed to be as adaptive as libraries have. I don't use my library for all my content viewing/listening but it's definitely saved me hundreds, if not thousands of dollars by checking whether my library has something to borrow before I go ahead and spend money on it.
This video almost made me said .....because he reminds me of how much I've given up on the library because I used to love going to the library. I'm going to the library tomorrow. Thank you for the great video
Out of all these "features", the only one the libraries have in my area are ebooks and audiobooks, which are done through a system called borrowbox, which has very few books and of the ones it does have, they're usually already being borrowed by another user and you have to wait in a queue to be able to loan them. When I was a child, I loved the library though. My first interaction was the mobile library that would come to my school once per week, which was just a little van that was officially part of the library in my town and it would be mostly filled with books for children, but it had access to the whole library system, so if you borrowed a book on there, it could be returned to the mobile library or any library in the county. Plus if there was a book you wanted, they'd have it delivered to the one in my town from whichever library it was held at and then put onto the bus in a box behind the counter so the person working the van could have it for the person who had reserved it. Then for a while I spent a lot of time out of school and going to the library got me out of the house. I'd spend some time on the internet for a bit using the computers, but after 90 minutes each day, my limit would be up, so I'd go around finding fun books to read and borrow. I'd often reserve books from other libraries in the county to be delivered to that one for me and it was fun. I did move when I was 14 and ended up closer to a different library in the county and went there a lot, with the guy who ran it often recommending great books for me. I also borrowed a copy of LEGO Indiana Jones for the Wii from there when I was 16 to install the Homebrew Channel on the vWii of my Wii U. But then I started to have less time when I went to college and then university (although both had libraries of their own). The one in the college I barely used because I would just buy books I wanted, but the one in my university had some books that were out of print that I wanted to read, so that was great, as well as ones that helped my studies. Since leaving uni, I have used the one in my town a little, mostly when out of work, but now I just don't have the time.
In the 2000s I discovered the library (I'm 39). It's amazing how much media you can get for free. I watched whole anime shows and read entire Manga using it at the time. I regret not using it more.
Stopped this video 3/4 of the way through... checked if my library was open on Saturday... it was open for another 45 mins so I ran down there and got myself a library card and they gave me a flyer showing all the apps and services they offer, its EXTENSIVE... so happy I clicked on this video! Subbed! ... Now I can finish the video!
@@NomadOverNormal one thing I was surprised is that they have a room with 3d printers and laser cutters and stuff, its like a little maker space, that would be a good topic!
I think there's quite a bit of confusion and/or misconceptions happening in this comments section. I currently work as a data analyst for one of the largest library districts in the US. First, because this video focuses mostly on digital content, it's really important to be aware that not every library offers every service highlighted in this video. Speaking specifically about my library, we have at one time offered all of the services mentioned in this video and in this comments section. However, digital content licensing is still EXTREMELY expensive for libraries, so the content available to you in services like Libby (fka Overdrive) depends on how well funded your library is. Likewise, hold times depend on how many digital copies of an item your library can afford to purchase. Don't think of library digital content as streaming; think of it as a digital option of a physical item. It is not streaming, so an unlimited number of people cannot access the same content at the same time. Your library can only purchase so many copies of any individual physical or digital item, so there will be holds for the most popular items. Despite the size of my library, we do not currently offer any video or music streaming services. We had all of the major ones in the past, but the cost to the library for those services was greater than the benefit it provided to our users. Hoopla seems like a great model in that it offers seemingly unlimited streaming; however, they then charge the library based on how much the service was used. Most libraries cannot budget for a service that doesn't have any sort of set price, so many libraries that do use Hoopla end up putting usage caps on the service so that usage does not exceed the budgeted cost. I want to be very clear that I'm not critiquing or criticizing this video in any way. On the contrary, I very much appreciate this video being made and published to increase awareness of what the modern library offers. I just don't want people going to their local library and being upset that all or some of the services mentioned in this video are not offered. The services offered by individual libraries are totally based on the funding of those specific libraries and the demands/expectations from the customers of those libraries. Lastly, remember that libraries are free to everyone BECAUSE they are funded by taxes, and as a result individual users get much more out of their money than they would paying for any service or physical item themselves. In our last fiscal year, my library calculated that we provided over $3.00 in services for every $1.00 collected in taxes. All that said, if you value the services provided by your library, or want to more effectively "cut the cord" from expensive subscription services, make sure you vote in favor of legislation, locally and nationally, that funds libraries. By supporting your local library, you will get back far more than what you would from buying individual services. P.S. It's fairly common that you can sign up for multiple library districts depending on where you live. I live in one of the relatively smaller US metro areas, and the library I work for is actually outside of my residential district, but because all the libraries in our metro have reciprocal card agreements, I actually access to at least 4 different cards, each of which grants me access to between 2 and 30 locations. This means that if my library does not offer one of the specific resources, I may be able to find it at one of the other reciprocal libraries.
@casualcommentor-bb5xf ---> Hello. Good points about taxpayers funding the Public Libraries. I use "Overdrive" via my physical library. I cannot get the "Libby" gizmo to function. My daughter says that is probably because Libby is for Smartphones. Okay, fine. I really do NOT like smartphones at all. I listen to audiobooks with my desktop computer with two speakers or my am/fm radio / cassette / CD-ROM player with two speakers. A major problem with Public Libraries and "Overdrive" is that most of the buyers/staffers/desk clerks/Librarians are females. They decide what titles are to be bought and put on the real shelves or on the "Overdrive" "shelves". My local library stopped their subscription to "Biblical Archaeology Review Magazine" and got rid of the existing copies that were on the shelf in the magazine area, instead of putting them in a safe keeping / reserve section in the basement or attic archive section. What do they buy new each month? A "girlie" romance fiction novel or female witchcraft book or a book about promoting the LBGBT stuff and publications supporting Obummer and Biden. Overdrive is very much the same. They have a Request form on Overdrive. I have requested certain books / Authors (fiction and real-deal historical) get added but it does NOT happen on Overdrive. Author Louis L'Amour wrote hundreds of Short Stories and several full-length books usually about the American West. {Several of his stories have been made into movies and TV series. {Such as: "How the West Was Won"; "Hondo"; "The Sacketts". } Almost all of the existing Louis L'Amour titles are checked out on Overdrive and they have a waiting List ,,, and I ask for more Louis L'Amour titles but Overdrive refuses to add them. The same thing with books by Clive Cussler. Cussler wrote oceanography sea / underwater adventures. Kinda-sorta Jacques Cousteau mixed with James Bond working for a fictitious Government agency called NUMA. Overdrive refuses to get the early and mid-range Cussler books on the menu. Instead, they have the gunk and trash when Clive got older and couldn't write so much anymore, he used some crummy 3rd rate authors to write horrible stories in various "series". Clive Cussler died a couple/few years ago and his son (Dirk) is in charge now. Cussler's books such as Sahara, Inca Gold, Shock Wave, Flood Tide, Atlantis Found (a VERY good book), and Valhalla Rising, Trojan Odyssey, Black Wind are good adventure novels with many historical facts and people mentioned. Both of my married Daughters have listened to or read Louis L'Amour books and Clive Cussler books and like them, but the local Librarian and the Overdrive refuses to get more on "Shelf" via Audiobooks or Printed books.
@@gusloader123Librarians are VERY aware of circulation statistics. If you are seeing more girl-oriented stuff, that's because that's what circulates. That said, one polite request probably outweighs 20 circulations. It can't hurt.
True. My local library is fairly well-funded but doesn’t have Freegal or Kanopy and had to cut Hoopla for budget reasons. I will say that you might have more luck with physical media. My library still carries blu-rays and CDs. Plus, the way the library system works, I can borrow physical media from any library in two counties without even using ILL.

I just got a library card today after being inspired by this video. The library at 0:30 REALLY looks like my favorite library, but with a country of a population of under 6 million I doubt that’s it, but god it’s exactly the same from the shelves to the tree to the lighting
this video inspired me to take a look at what my library has to offer and I found out that they offer date kits for couples, clubs, movies, games, and music instrument rentals the list keeps going. Thank you for reminding everyone what an awesome resource our libraries are!

Even tho I only started in March, I was already past that goal by the end of September. Now I'm at 66 so far this year, and likely going to finish another couple before the year's out. So glad for the tip about movie streaming!
Thank you for sharing all of the different modes of entertainment that libraries offer; I did not know you could get any kind of streaming service that way. Have a blessed day. John 3:16 KJV
Yep. Our library is the place to go for books, movies, video games, and board games, and we can even reserve items from libraries across our area region. Let alone the digital platforms that you are highlighting. I’m guessing not everyone who watches this video has access to a local library, but people who do should definitely heed your good advice.
Arrrrhhh .. it's true what ye be saying .. and we should all support our local libraries and explore the incredible resources they have to offer .. but alas I haven't been needing their honorable services for quite some time now. The way my eyes be seeing it .. if digitally "buying" something doesn't mean you actually OWN it, then digitally *_taking_* something means you didn't steal it. 🏴☠ Tis a good video Matey .. best of luck on a speedy voyage to 10K!
Some caveats for those who try this. - libby the service ebooks doesnt let you check out an ebook or audiobook if its already taken. (So most popular books would be on hold) -the streaming service does not support every libarby system. (In that case you would to need to sign up using your uni or college email)
I’ve seen lots of holds on regular ebooks but I’ve actually never seen a hold on an audiobook on Libby. Maybe there’s just not many people listening to audio books from my library though 😂
is it so bad to just wait to read a book? its gonna be the same book in 6 months…and read less popular in waiting. My library has dvd…but they often broken, too scratch. And kanopy, its just 4 movies by month at my library.
The hack I have for this is if possible get multiple library cards from nearby cities, then check all to see which one has no hold or a shorter hold. Put reserves on lots of books and you will always have an audiobook ready to go. Or check the available tab for something today and place holds on stuff for weeks later.
Burlington County native here (Mt. Laurel'ish area). Glad I discovered your channel. Already a Kanopy, Overdrive and Libby user. Thanks for spreading the word!!
I’ve always heard about how many things you can do with a library card but this is the best summation of it all I’ve seen. Gonna look into it all this week.
Normally a California Parks Pass is $200/year BUT this video prompted me to check out my favorite libraries site for more info and turns out that our library lends these $200 passes free for 3 weeks at a time to members (!). Annnnd I found out one of the libraries had a media center where you can edit a video, record a podcast, design stuff (with the full Adobe Creative Suite). Thx again for this video prompting many of us to look further into library offerings.
my local library recently went under renovation, when I went back for the first time I found out that they shrunk the total space for books by 25% and replaced it with either empty space, more ancient dell PCs and a few office/meeting rooms for booking. it is the most bizzare thing and actually quite unfortunate given the whole thing was a million dollar job
thanks for the reminder of this valuable service, definitely need to tap into my local library more often. time to put the new eBike to use maybe... work the body, feed the mind.
This was super helpful. As a long time Library and Libby user I thought I was ahead of the average person on what's available, but you clued me in to a bunch of stuff I didn't know
Here from reddit! I appreciate this video so much - As an engineer and hobbyist planner our societies lack of 3rd space is crazy. You brought some serious value in this video and your editing is on point!
Modern western societies lack FREE 3rd places. Because where's monetary profit in that for the businesses? Everythig is reduced to money in the capitalistic system.
I love my local library. I use Libby for e-books that connect to my kindle and Hoopla for audiobooks and movies. My library also offers a homeschooling curriculum free to those with a card and I use it for my son! I looove libraries so much. They’re not appreciated enough or talked about enough. This was a wonderful video!😊
Love this! I am going on over a year without Netflix and everything they do continues to make me not want to support them. I use Libby a lot for ebooks and audiobooks, and I signed by for Kanopy but haven't explored it much. Definitely going to look into a lot of these other resources too! One thing I like to point out to people is how much comics and manga are available. Comics are super expensive at $10+ when depending on the series you're looking a handful to...infinite volumes. I just don't have $1000 to invest into the One Piece manga right now. But from my library I can just borrow it and read it at home for free, my library even has a lot of comic series on infinite lending so you don't have to wait for a digital copy to be "available" like with some other books. I've been reading Berserk and it's so convenient. There's of course more dubious ways to read comics for free, but this is easy, legal, and promotes community so I love it. Maybe this is obvious because comics are books too, but it's worth checking out!
Library resources are the best! Especially if your system has migrated to Libby. So maybe awesome books and movies--even when you have to put something on hold it usually doesn't take too long and there's always something to listen to in the meantime.
One of the few good things about my childhood was how much time I spent at the library. I didn't realise that going every week wasn't a thing most people did until I was much older. And these days the services and selection you can get from them are better than ever. Libraries are awesome.
Don't forget, BCLS is a good library system too. Not all Library systems provide these services. One other awesome service they provide is that you can request and borrow any book you need from any BCLS Library and they'll get it for you. I think they'll even send it to your local library. I used this when I was in college to get a few books I needed.
TL;dr-- your mileage may vary depending on city size and mayors. Btw your library has to opt IN to these services. If you live in a large city then your library most likely has this. A more rural library might have a more limited budget. If that’s your case go talk to the library director or the mayor and ask about these services. They’re more willing if patrons ask for it. I had my local library discontinue Freegal because no one was using it. Libraries get funding from USAGE. Please use your Library-- it has more than just books. It is a Public Archive of media.
My aunt is a bus driver for special needs students and a few years ago it broke my heart when I heard a little boy didn’t know libraries existed. This boy loved sea animals and every day on the bus ride he would tell my aunt all the facts he learned and he would ask questions hoping she could give him answers. She asked him if he had gone to the library to learn all these facts and he was confused, said “miss p, the library is only at school. I can only go with my class”. As a family who loves our public libraries, raised our kids reading to them in the womb and a sister who is an author, we knew we had to change this. My aunt knows not everyone has transportation to even get to the library and our town lacks easily accessible public transport, so she asked him which animals he wanted to learn about. Then she knew my son and I went to our library weekly/bi weekly so she asked if we could possibly check out some kids books on his interests. My son was in 5th grade around this time and absolutely loved choosing books for someone else. It wasn’t something we had ever done but it was a blast looking at all the books they had. Our stack grew and grew until we finally had to narrow down our choices haha We gave them to my aunt and she surprised the boy with the books. She had a little basket she kept on the bus for the books and then each kid could grab a book to read on the ride and drop in when they got off. We tested it out with library books to see if the kids liked it and turned out they looooved it. She had a radio previously but when her old bus broke her new bus didn’t have music so the kids were already having issues with the change in routine. Especially being special needs their routine is huge and keeping them comfortable physically but also emotionally and mentally is something my aunt works very hard to do. After we saw it working not just for the 1 little boy, but a lot of kiddos, we started purchasing books, collecting donated books and we created her own little bus library. Now kids can take them off the bus to borrow (or keep bc it’s not about the books, it’s about making the kids happy and teaching them the importance of reading). Sadly bc of Covid this couldn’t continue and she hasn’t been able to restart it yet either but for those 2 years of library books and our bus library we had a blast and I know it made a difference. The library offers so many resources and we only utilized borrowing books, the least they do, and it changed lives. I know it sounds hyperbolic, but reading can and does have that power. Get a kiddo in the door of the library with the fun kids books and next thing you know they’re learning computer games, then wanting to take coding classes the library offers, then learns how to build a robot in another class….the domino effect 1 visit to the library can have is amazing. And there’s even better librarians there to help you along the way.
Thank you so much! I knew about getting digital audiobooks and ebooks through the library and physical copies of movies and video games. But not about digital music, news, and movies. This video needs to be broadcast nationally or shown in classrooms. I hate how people don’t know what their tax money even goes to for their benefit. Thanks again!☺️
THANK YOU. Libraries are a priceless resource that people are being gaslit and bamboozled into abandoning. Who the hell needs to spend money on all that useless "content" when there's a whole world of stuff that's available for FREE? Enough!! If you don't get to OWN it, what's the point of paying money for it???
I remembered I got a library card when I was in middle school. I logged back into my account and found out that it's still accepted to this day. Now I have access to everything mentioned in this video. Thanks!
Wow, this video is underrated, I think it will come to capture the sentiment of a generation's value system soon. Local, sustainable, high quality information sources are so much easier to obtain than people might've assumed.
@@NomadOverNormalGod I've hated watching this shift throughout my life. People have said "you'll own nothing and like it" for years and it's true, people just don't get it. It's like needing to buy things from the company store but you're beholden to dozens. It shouldn't be hard to understand that subscriptions are designed to make you pay much more over time than outright owning things but people don't seem to get that. It shouldn't be hard to understand that putting a bunch of money into something that the provider can just take away no questions asked is a bad idea, but again, people don't seem to understand that.
so glad to see more people talking about this, im a minor and my local library is literally so helpful to read all the books i cant afford + kanopy has so many movies i wouldn't find anywhere else
Honestly, one of the best videos I've seen in a long time. Straight-up informative video by someone looking for no personal gain or virtue signaling. Thank you Nomad
My local library has been offering classes for people to earn technical degrees. Real degrees through real universities that let people better themselves. Completely free. Libraries need to be invested in and are amazing
I live in a large regional city in North Queensland, Australia, population about 250 000. About 10 months ago I went to one of 3 local libraries run by the city council looking for a book on organic chemistry. No stacks with numbers on the end left me scratching my head so I asked for assistance. "Oh, we're not an academic library" ??? I said do you have anything on chemistry? Best they could find was a high school level book called "Science" - I kid you not. Was told the only option was to join the local university library for $70 a year. Looking around and wondering what kind of library it actually was I noted about 10 young mums (presumably) with very young kids, a security guard watching ?? something I guess, a few elderly folk looking at the "Large Print" section, and library staff. There was a prominently displayed rainbow flag, an Aboriginal display and a small "historical" display consisting of 2 books and some photos, as well as a number of computers for "Internet access" and Printing. And that was it. Apparently local libraries have become glorified child-care centre extensions. If you were interested solely in fiction and music media there was a fairly extensive selection, anything else forget it.
more people need this information. with gratitude, i'll be sharing this with everyone i can. i've been trying to turn everyone i know on to libby since i discovered it. i also think free instrument checkout is an honorable mention. thanks for making this! (:
Wow!! What a comment, thank you so much with sharing. I really appreciate that! Didn’t know about the instruments actually…. Mine doesn’t offer that, but libraries are freaking cool.
I'm subscribing for two reasons: I like your content and your attitude, and because my husband is an an independent songwriter/filmmaker who gets shadow-banned due to controversial subjects. I support the good guys-whoever they may be.
When I retired I cut the cable TV cord and started to go to the library. Great selection of DVDs, but I noticed the book stacks had really thinned out since I was in HS and college in the area. But most of the new books they get now are e-books, especially the non-fiction stuff (fiction is available in hardcopy and digital). I go there maybe once a week now. My only gripe is they only have 19 out of 26 James Bond movies on DVD, but I can live with that! 😉
Libby’s magazine selection is great if you craft. If you knit, crochet, or sew look for a magazine focused on that and you’ll find tons of free patterns that you can screenshot. So now you can craft on the go, just pull up the pattern and get crafting!
1. Audiobooks 2. Movies and TV Shows (Kanopy) 3. News 4. Music (Freegle music) 5. Museum Passes 6. Seeds from local farmers? 7. Sign out tools from library
Being outside the US makes this sadly not an option. I have 3 different library cards and can still only ever find about 1% of the books I’m looking for 😫
Same. In my country you need a library card per each county. As a person who travels a lot for work, that would mean I'd need at least 3. It's just not practical

I clicked the video because I have used a library card to get some great perks in the past but those programs ended. So I’m hoping you will show me something new

I didn't know a library did anything besides have information material like books and internet
i thought the thumbnail was creative and i clicked because the title was an interesting call to action
the library is the government doing something right: providing information and knowledge for free for anyone who wants it. Plus, you're taxed to pay for it, so might as well use it.
The mere fact that you're okay with the government forcibly taking your money to pay for an indoctrination center.

My library system recently built and opened a whole library branch dedicated to nothing but food. The library has test kitchens in it, where they offer free cooking classes by area chefs. The library also offers all of the services mentioned in this video.
That's amazing
That's great, but it's not a library
@Cynthia-uf9ro It's full of books too. What's your definition of a library?
I swear, all of society should be built around the principle of libraries. It would be a much better world.

Unlike what corporations do with streaming, things like Libby and Hoopla are 100% free (libraries get their funding from city taxes, unlike corporations that do the fake "free" system before pulling the rug out from under their customers).

You’re so welcome:) I’m happy to have pointed you in that direction. Don’t discount the library’s physical media catalogue either!
Especially if the movies are old you can find websites that offer the movie for free if you look up "*movie title* free". it is illegal to run the websites but not to use them, to keep in mind
you should try piracy!

How do you ask librarian??
I want to be expert at asking question
I don't have a RUclips channel, and I'm not a librarian, but I say this to people all the time!
You got this! Do u need a phD? Just asking haha
@@sylvienguyen1010 Nope! Only a Masters! Depending on where I want to work (like school libraries), I may need certification, but for the most part, making good connections and working my way from volunteering has been pretty successful for me!
Problem is, it’s not easy to get a library card. And libraries are a money pit. Diff convo tho.
I get to write off my donation, save space (I've always lived in city centers with limited space), learn something new, and find community which is a win, win, win, win, win.. for me.
I never heard of this, or considered it, but what a wonderful idea. Thank you for this unique share.

Having fun isn’t hard, when you’ve got a library card! 🎶

Is that an actual PSA slogan on a city government access channel? If not, it should be!
Is that from reading rainbow?
You just saved my life, man. I was complaining about this subscriptions all the time but I couldn't find any replacement for entertaining. Kanopy was a definite life saver.
I have a follow up video to this coming out by Tuesday:) Look out for that
Digital minimalism changed my life. Great to catch that in your deck of notecards.
I recently discovered that my library has sewing machines and saw horses, circular saws, yoga equipment, baking pans, and so much more to check out. It’s so cool.
That's super cool! Community resources.
Even physical books .. which they will have shipped to your local library .. for free.
Over the weekend I got a library card because of this video
I completely agree with you! I love going to the library. NYPL has so much to offer! The masses are so unaware sadly
AMENNNNN!!! Welcome to the club. what's another library topic video you think I should make?
@@markfisher7962 Hello. I have always been polite. I have written my requests / suggestions on a pre-printed form and given it to the Librarian. Dead-end. Thankfully there is also the C.C.E.L. website.
I just got a library card today after being inspired by this video. Browsing some of the online services I now have access to (for free) with my card, I was delighted to see many interesting, high-value topics in ebook, audiobook, and documentary form. I plan to reduce my consumption of youtube and social media to replace it with a better, more mindful form of entertainment. Great video, cheers
Wow - many have told me they were inspired to do this after watching the video, but you’re the first person to actually do it and return to let us all know! You’re amazing. Thank you.
The library at 0:30 REALLY looks like my favorite library, but with a country of a population of under 6 million I doubt that’s it, but god it’s exactly the same from the shelves to the tree to the lighting
I wish i could go to the library after work and stay until 1am like people do at bars
A library open late would be amaaaazing!
The central library in NYC would stay open until 1 in the morning. Not sure if they do that today but it was pretty awesome.
As a kid, my parents barely purchased any books. We always went to the library once a week and i loved it. I still do actually. Nice video
this video inspired me to take a look at what my library has to offer and I found out that they offer date kits for couples, clubs, movies, games, and music instrument rentals the list keeps going. Thank you for reminding everyone what an awesome resource our libraries are!
Good video! I thought you were gonna say “I didn’t discover the library discovered me”. If you had I would have rage quit this video so hard you’d have felt it
Just explored my library’s options. Thank you!
Thank you! After watching your video this morning, I got up, got dressed and headed over to my local library to get a library card! I used to use the library many years ago, but had honestly forgotten all that it offers. There is so much more there now, this is epic! Appreciate the information, extremely valuable!!!😀
Great video! Something else worth mentioning is my library offers access to a free language learning website. Also some libraries have subscriptions to Ancestry
Someone else actually commented about the language learning. I didn’t know that about today:) I will have to look into this since I’m in a really diverse area and it’s likely offered. Thanks for taking the time to comment and watching!
My library had access to lynda learning, that was useful.
Where are all these super libraries? I need to move. My little town is trying, but choices are very limited.
Omg where or what library??! 🫨😲
I did not know that
I did a documentary for my city on the library’s! I love libraries and the movies available are better than pretty much almost anything streamed. Join your library we must protect what that place is!
Since the weather's cooled down, I've been going to the library quite often as a place to work or get out of the house. The study rooms they have come in clutch! That's really dope that you made a documentary for them. What compelled you to do that?
@@NomadOverNormal Sorry for a late response same guy different account, I got hired by my city in ABQ which was building a new state of the art library in a very hard part of town and they wanted something to advertise what was possible with our community libraries!
I recently did this! We went to a town meeting and I never realized how extensive the library in the town I recently moved to is. It’s got more movies I want to watch than any streaming service, audio books, music, etc.
It was so weird seeing the library card from my area on screen. I did not expect that.
Thank you for reminding me how much I once loved the library.
The library was always my refuge. It's one of the most important public institutions. Cincinnati always had very good libraries, they were a very important part of the community. They had summer programs for children etc .
Libby (what overdrive is now called) is GREAT! Library audiobooks have gotten me back into reading. I had the goal of finishing 52 books this year, one per week. Even tho I only started in March, I was already past that goal by the end of September. Now I'm at 66 so far this year, and likely going to finish another couple before the year's out.
So glad for the tip about movie streaming!
Came here from Reddit , I’m not even a movie or library guy but you definitely know how to captivate your audience
Started looking at my library's resources and there are so many that i didnt think exsisted. TY so much for this video
:) glad to have inspired this. What have you found??
🇨🇦 You can donate the latest Blu-Rays & books to libraries. That what I do sometimes
Arrrrhhh .. it's true what ye be saying .. and we should all support our local libraries and explore the incredible resources they have to offer .. but alas I haven't been needing their honorable services for quite some time now. The way my eyes be seeing it .. if digitally "buying" something doesn't mean you actually OWN it, then digitally *_taking_* something means you didn't steal it. 🏴☠ Tis a good video Matey .. best of luck on a speedy voyage to 10K!
This is such a wonderful video! Thank you from a librarian!
Some caveats for those who try this.
- libby the service ebooks doesnt let you check out an ebook or audiobook if its already taken. (So most popular books would be on hold)
-the streaming service does not support every libarby system.
@@joshuasamuel176sounds like a load of…

I’ve always heard about how many things you can do with a library card but this is the best summation of it all I’ve seen. Gonna look into it all this week.
report back to me with how it goes!
How’d it go
Normally a California Parks Pass is $200/year BUT this video prompted me to check out my favorite libraries site for more info and turns out that our library lends these $200 passes free for 3 weeks at a time to members (!).
As a long time Library and Libby user I thought I was ahead of the average person on what's available, but you clued me in to a bunch of stuff I didn't know
Glad it was helpful!
Watching this video has been the 10 most productive minutes of my day. Thank you for such an informative video.
My library has a beautiful theater and always has great performances there.
Thanks for this video. I love how brick-and-mortar libraries are evolving, rather than becoming extinct.
Bro, I just checked my cities library resources. It's freaking massive! Sometimes it helps living in the big city haha. Thank you :)
That's awesome!
I love my library! At 75 I'm a life long reader. Thanks for all the tips!
THIS MADE ME GET A LIBRARY CARD!! FREE RESOUCRES?! Might as well capitalize on that 😄
You're 100% correct. The last step is making an Anki deck or Notion for those flashcards and you'll remember what you read forever!
Library resources are the best! Especially if your system has migrated to Libby. So maybe awesome books and movies--even when you have to put something on hold it usually doesn't take too long and there's always something to listen to in the meantime.
I agree’ the holds aren’t bad at all. There’s always another book
This is legit fascinating. I’m going to check out my local library for these things. Thank you!!
Please do!
One of the few good things about my childhood was how much time I spent at the library. I didn't realise that going every week wasn't a thing most people did until I was much older. And these days the services and selection you can get from them are better than ever. Libraries are awesome.
@NomadOverNormal very good content, no bullshit, trying to think beyond and explore outside the norm. this is what i need. Thank you
Don't forget, BCLS is a good library system too.
Thanks!
Oh wow!
Wow, this video is underrated, I think it will come to capture the sentiment of a generation's value system soon. Local, sustainable, high quality information sources are so much easier to obtain than people might've assumed.
Hope so! I just put out a NEW video on my page about the subscription economy and how we aren't consciously owning things anymore.
RUclips algorithm working wonders. Glad I have run into this video in my feed.
Welcome!
so glad to see more people talking about this, im a minor and my local library is literally so helpful to read all the books i cant afford + kanopy has so many movies i wouldn't find anywhere else
Was not prepared to come across this gem of a video. Well done sir! U have a new subscriber.
Welcome aboard!
Libby’s magazine selection is great if you craft. If you knit, crochet, or sew look for a magazine focused on that and you’ll find tons of free patterns that you can screenshot. So now you can craft on the go, just pull up the pattern and get crafting!
Pressreader has them, too!
1. Audiobooks
2. Movies and TV Shows (Kanopy)
3. News
4. Music (Freegle music)
5. Museum Passes
I am a lifelong library enthusias and I approve this message. Digital libraries are great if you're in a rural area!
My brother watched all of Naruto with our library card. It was awesome.
