The stream was taken down 12 times😤 Plus this video was blocked when I posted it so I had to cut down some sections. It doesn’t take away from this beautiful performance
Nice guitar playing man! Very impressive for just learning! Amazing you started listening to AIC and you were motivated to learn their songs. Very cool man!
In a few ways this performance was the final goodbye of the Grunge era: - Kurt had passed away 2 years before, ending Nirvana in its tracks - Soundgarden was disintegrating and would break up the next year - Pearl Jam and STP were still going, but shifted to a more alternative rock sound - Nu-metal and more accessible alternative rock bands exploded on the scene and took over radioplay - At this point, Alice in Chains had not toured in nearly 3 years. They would only perform four more shows before going on hiatus - Layne’s former girlfriend died later that year, sending him into a spiral of drug abuse and depression. He became a recluse and died six years later
Yep, I remember watching this premiere at the time and it really did feel that it was the end of era. The music industry shifted hard at the end of the 90s.
This was Alice in Chains' first live performance in 2.5 years. Layne was clean the prior year in 1995. That year, Layne Staley sang for Madseason with Guitarist Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Bassist John Baker Saunders of The Walkabouts, and Drummer Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees. This was a Super Group that was formed to support themselves to become drug free. I recommend checking out Madseason live at The Moore Theater 1995.
Layne was definitely not clean in 95, he looks like a zombie on that mad season set clinging to the mic but it never stopped him from being a world class singer
I was in high school when this came on MTV. I still remember watching it for the first time, it’s been etched into my memory. They’ve been my favorite band since my cousins introduced me to them in 1993.
These bands in that era of '91-94 were so good! We didn't even know how good we had it in HS back during that time. I used to bring my entire CD case to class with me and would listen on my discman (even when not allowed) It's cool to see the appreciation being carried on to today. Good times.
21:40 That nod from Jerry sums up the entire show in many ways. The band was very uncertain about Layne’s health and ability to perform at the level needed for this acoustic set. He’d been pretty rocky at the rehearsals he actually showed up to and most of them he was a no show. I’m pretty sure “Down in a Hole” was the second song of the set and Layne has a really big moment at the end of that first chorus and whether or not he pulls off that lick is going to set the tone for the entire set. He nails it and you can see in Jerry’s face just how proud he is of his brother in that moment as he nods to his other band mates that this is going to be the show they’d all prepared and hoped for. Amazing.
Glad you boys finally got to see this. Melancholic and dark, yet it remains one of the best live performances of the era. Legendary. The vocals from Layne and Jerry, goated bass tone from Mike, it just goes so hard.
It's so cool you'e learning how to play the guitar inspired by these grunge icons, back in the day that was the same thing me and many others did after listening to music like this all day. :)
You guys have got to check out Temple of the Dog. It was made up of the members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, with Chris Cornell doing the lead vocalist work. They only put one album together, but it is a fantastic album and I think you two would dig it a lot. Two songs from that album: Say Hello 2 Heaven and Hunger Strike got major airplay.
I was with y'all live, even after issue, after issue with the winter storm! I was watching in my car also in the freezing cold because I was away from my own place for work. Thanks for sticking with it during your own troubles with the winter chills blowing.
You know…I read my own comment, and thought, “Well, yeah, stupid. Why do you think they’re getting all these copyright strikes?” Someone wants you to buy a DVD to watch this. 😂
AIC is so hard to listen to in retrospect knowing what will happen and then that much of these lyrics where literal and predictive on Layne's end. A cry for help and even him acknowledging no one was hearing it and how that weighted on his heart. Then here to find him so passionate and soulful yet withering away. You really can't deny their potency. A eulogy and I love it as I regret it as this an example of transcending the music and art.
I watched this the first time it was aired on MTV and we all knew Layne wasn’t doing good. So I cried watching it the first time and I still shed a tear to this day.
Alice In Chains are a rad band. They have a number of really awesome songs, they have an air of mystique, killer riffs and haunting vocal melodies. But if I had to name my top 50 favorite bands I doubt they’d make the list. They’re not even my favorite band to do an Unplugged session with MTV. All that said, I think this is hands down the greatest Unplugged session of the entire series and it’s not even close. Every aspect of this is a 10. The band wasn’t in a confident place when they took the gig and their rehearsals weren’t that great either, but all that fell away when they came on stage. The lighting, the stage setting, the mixing, the shot compositions, the edits, everyone who worked on this thing brought their A game and deserves their flowers. Hell, I like to think that the interns making coffee runs for the crew were on one that day. I genuinely believe this show is one of the truly great moments between music and broadcast television. The Unplugged series was great because of all the inspired work that went into to making each show special and unique and this show was absolutely its apex. Has anyone ever heard an acoustic bass guitar sound this good before or since?
Awesome vid guys. I’m going to keep saying it. Load up the car and go see Pearl Jam live and focus it with the boys. They are one of the few bands still crushing it on tour. Do what you have to do before it’s too late to see them!!
Considering you'se guys' opinion of Alice in Chains and Tool, I'd recommend A Perfect Circle. Particular their album Thirteen Steps. It's basically Maynard James Keenan making an AIC album with more poetic writing. I should also add Thirteenth Step was written partially in remembrance of Layne Staley by Maynard James Keenan.
Just to say, Layne hadn't lost any of his teeth yet. This is a rumor that goes around all tge time. If you look at mad season live at the Moore less than a year before his teeth were fine. Around the time of MTV unplugged they shot the Nona files and you can see all his teeth though they have deteriorated and are not in good health. I think he is super self conscious and is trying to keep his head down hide them here but they are there or his whole face would have lost structure. According to his father he started to loose them around 1998 after he had started to become reclusive. In 1999 Alice recorded Died and Get born again and I think he may have lost a couple but then but who knows for sure.
I have mixed feelings about the MTV unplugged sessions because I generally think the studio version of every song is better than the unplugged versions, especially for Pearl Jam. Best version of nutshell though obv
Gotta disagree, mostly because I thought Ten was over-produced (too much reverb on the vocals). With the exception of Alive, due to the guitar solo, I enjoyed every one of their songs Unplugged just a touch more, especially Porch, Oceans, and Black. Just an opinion, though, we're both right.
@@theeJAYBUDshow Please don’t sleep on Strapping Young Lad. Devin Townsend’s an insane singer, maybe the best ever, and the Self-Titled red album is a great place to start. Alien is a close 2nd or alternate best album. Their drummer Gene Hoglan is also GOAT’ed by many people.
best live performance ever. would highly recommend Black Gives Way to Blue, amazing album by them and i had been really scared to listen to post-Layne AIC for the longest time. i would also love for yall to check out FROGSTOMP by silverchair and Ameican Thighs by Veruca Salt

You forgot Mark Lanegan (of Screaming Trees, and later QOTSA) was also a part of Mad Season. Hell, I think he does the harmonizing vocals.
That set was incredible
Layne was definitely not clean in 95, he looks like a zombie on that mad season set clinging to the mic but it never stopped him from being a world class singer
Layne wasn't clean in 95, only in 94 for a bit after Kurt died and 93 he was mostly clean
Does anyone else notice that Jerry was looking at Layne when they both sang "You my friend, I will defend and if we change, well I love you anyway." 😢
It makes sense Jerry wrote those lyrics I’m sure with Layne and maybe some other close friends in mind

AIC Unplugged might be the best album of this era. Might be the best Unplugged of all time. The composition is off the charts.
PLEASE IM BEGGING, PEARL JAM UNPLUGGED!!!!
Glad you boys finally got to see this. Melancholic and dark, yet it remains one of the best live performances of the era. Legendary. The vocals from Layne and Jerry, goated bass tone from Mike, it just goes so hard.
Strangest thing ever exclaimed during a live performance: "YOU CAN SEE HIS TEETH!" 😂
It's so cool you'e learning how to play the guitar inspired by these grunge icons, back in the day that was the same thing me and many others did after listening to music like this all day. :)
Rest in Peace Mike Starr.
“this is peak humanity” LOOOL facts
“Can you imagine if they made a country song?” 👀
IM THE QUEEEEEEN. Queen of the Rodeo. Alice’s only country tune.
Y'all should really do the Pearl Jam Unplugged, too. The three grunge unplugged are very different, but really display the best of what the sound was

I love how obsessed you guys have become with Alice In Chains. It’s cool to see fellow guys in this generation finding amazing music as well
Another excellent reaction fellas.. it's nice to see yall been listening to AIC in your own time
Temple of the Dog album is a must. Mad Season’s “Above” after

One of the best mtv unplugged no cap
These “Unplugged” specials were the best things that MTV ever had their name on. 🤘🏴☠️
You know…I read my own comment, and thought, “Well, yeah, stupid. Why do you think they’re getting all these copyright strikes?” Someone wants you to buy a DVD to watch this. 😂
100% and now we have tiny desk from npr carrying on the vibes 😭❤️
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
Agreed!
Down in a hole man
Gotta look into "Staind - MTV Unplugged" it's a masterpiece.

The tag for the Unplugged album should be “Ready to be sad? lol”
Just purchased the 2011 vinyl of this and had to drop $125. Crazy demand for this, worth every cent.
Rare vinyl is very expensive. Just bought Beth Hart live at Paradiso on CD for 25 dollars. The Vinyl is 250
Metallica was in the audience very good friends with AIC members

OK let’s do Mad Season Live at the Moore next it’s a must if you love Layne🙏🏻
I would recommend a zepplin marathon or at least a 1 album reaction. Really their first 6 albums are absolutely iconic and life changing.
Above - Mad Season
You guys should listen to audioslave!
Check out Jerry Cantrell's new stuff " Vilified " sounds like early AIC.🤟🔥🔥
You guys have to do live at the Moore since you did this. Basically the opposite of this performance, just fire breathing from Layne

Not having Patreon I was really hoping to see your guys reaction to " Got me Wrong" from the Sap EP and also the MTV unplugged set
Believe it or not, they actually *did* make a country song, called 'queen of the rodeo.'
Chains were the best of the "grunge" bands. No question.
I have mixed feelings about the MTV unplugged sessions because I generally think the studio version of every song is better than the unplugged versions, especially for Pearl Jam. Best version of nutshell though obv
