Why LEGO Avatar FAILED (2022-2024)...

- In this video I discuss what happened with the LEGO Avatar theme, and why it seemingly has been discontinued after just 2 years. With the new movies set to be released over the next 10 years, why has LEGO halted on continuing to make sets, when these movies absolutely dominate at the box office, with the first movie being the highest grossing movie of all time.
I used some clips from Pitch Meetings, check them out here: / @pitchmeetings

I would’ve actually bought some sets if they all weren’t like $50 each 😭
LITERALLY
I wanted to collect them because the sets looked damn good, but it just wasn’t in my budget.
They were all half off a few months ago.
@@TheRandompaint at my stores, when any Lego goes on any sale, I find out about it too late 🥲
@@TheRandompaint I’m in Canada there’s never any sales here. I went to the lego store a month ago and the avatar sets were all 20% off. Not enough of a discount
I don’t think it failed so much as the next sets won’t come until the new film does. Like Jurassic World, at first.
GREAT LEGO MAN CAM LEGO AVATAR 2022-2024 SETS FAILURE.
The reason Avatar the Last Airbender didn't get more sets was because Lego made a deal with Nickelodeon to try out two themes to see which one would sell more. It was between Avatar and SpongeBob. You could probably guess which one sold more.
That seems very impossible to imagine them doing today. SpongeBob and Avatar are both so incredibly popular that they could have them coexisting.
@@benmalsky9834 Yeah. But let's not forget that by that time ATLA was already on its last season and SpongeBob was still ongoing so I don't blame Lego for discontinuing ATLA sets. I do hope they bring them back though and bring us TLOK too:)
@@CouchMario It’s just disappointing in hindsight to not get more ATLA sets given the amazing legacy it left behind and its resurgence in popularity over the past five years.
@@benmalsky9834 I mean it does make sense kinda. A popular franchise doesn't equate to good Lego sales. Like Lego avatar movies sets for example or the new Indiana Jones. So I see why Lego is hesitant to remake a Lego theme that didn't sell very well. It also might be because of Nickelodeon's partnership with other brands but I am not sure.
@@CouchMario As far as the Avatar movie franchise goes, I’m very sure that Lego is just gonna wait until each new movie comes out to make new sets, like the gap between Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom.
Avatar is a strange franchise from a pop culture perspective, both films were presented as this big cultural event from a technological aspect. They were something so new and groundbreaking that you would be missing out not seeing them. But as much as people were caught up in the visual technology side very few people connected with the movies on an emotional level. Very few people would choose avatar as their favourite movie, most people would struggle to name characters from the franchise even though they saw the movie. So the poor lego sales are pretty much what happened with all avatar merchandise.
Really? I’m sure many people know who Jake Sully and Neytiri are.
Currently avatar the way of water and godzilla minus one are my favorite films
Avatar films are my favorite right next to the Truman show. I feel like people think they aren't as popular as they really are it's more of a low-key fan base I guess
@@abcdeisthekey It will grow as the films continue. Just you wait.
Dude...the third movie was deleyed wich is why they havent made sets yet 😭
My biggest issue, which I’m sure is common, is the fact that all the sets are ludicrously over priced. I’m a massive avatar fan, and the focus on the navi over the RDA and the high prices meant I only picked up the smallest £20 set.
The price points on licensed sets are bleeding customers dry.
Issue with this theme is simple. It had absolutely zero direction. You had sets which evoked a doll house method- especially the larger ones. Then sets which focused more on the human military and combat features. Problem is it never committed to either. You either had "Cute flight" Cute home" Tree with cute colors" or "MECH KILLA THE MEGAMISTER" with nothing in between.
Not to get into gender stereotypes but you're trying to appeal to both a feminine, and male audience at the same time. This never has and never will work for lego.
Now imagine for a moment instead of "Cute flight" you had the sets focused purely "Blue space monkeys" vs "RDA military" Where every set while yes gives you the elements to make something more dollhouse- focuses primarily on combat.
"RDA" base section and a "Pandora" tree section with every set
And also why add a whale but no harpoon vessel?
Additionally why do a cute flight when it could be flying lizard vs gunship
These are just more marketable.
I sure as hell aint paying 150 for a pink tree
To be fair, that describes the movies. Over-the-top action then slow reflective moment then wildlife encounter. I agree it needed to commit, but I can see where they were coming from. Avatar is as much about the action as it about the ecosystem of Pandora.
As a gigantic Avatar fan, I really did enjoy this license in Lego form. They really did capture the essence of both movies while providing playful sets who look great on display. But I understand why people didn’t cared about it : all Avatar’s merchandise generally sells poorly. The saddest failure was the line produced by McFarlane Toys who provided AMAZING action figures (I’m still mourning the absence of a massive Thanator figure)
Because it's a promotional theme like so many before it.
Lone ranger
Indiana jones
Hobbit/LOTR
Cars
Toy story
Etc.
i bought the first wave sets on clearance not because of the theme but because the terrains are awsome for dinosaur display
I think it’s way too early to say if the Lego Avatar theme is “dead” or not. I heavily believe that when Fire & Ash comes out, they will do sets again.
Avatar should had been targeted at adults with 18+ sets
Why didn’t they not make that big plane that colonel uses in first movie ?
I personally love the Lego Avatar theme. The sets are so colorful and have such unique builds. I like the creature builds and scifi military vehicles The Navi minifigures are great, I love how they have their own molded pieces.
I think what they should’ve done is direct it towards adults especially with the human ships and shuttles used in the films
As well releasing a set of the tree of the first avatar film would be interesting
They didn't do enough with the theme to justify the existence of the sets they did make, IMO. They were missing certain main characters and didn't provide enough RDA/human stuff, limiting what you could actually do with the sets both in terms of play and display. Interestingly, the regular Avatar action figure line suffered a similar issue. It just felt disorganized, unfocused, and most importantly: unfinished/incomplete.
Seems like they just wanted a bunch of merchandise out for the new movie without putting much thought into it. If I was in charge of curating the set line up, I'd have scrapped the sets based on the first movie and focused entirely on the new movie coming out. Provide more characters (the rest of Blue Team for example), human soldiers, vehicles (the Skimwing should have come with a small-medium boat build based on the scene near the finale), and just overall more playability between sets. They don't need to be gimmick ridden, just be more conducive to an environment that allows people to recreate scenes from the movie and inspire creativity.
Then we could be having sets based on the first movie being released now to fill in the gap between Avatar 2 and the upcoming Avatar 3. It's a theme that had a lot of potential but suffered under mismanagement.
Yes, they were pretty to look at, yet I had zero interest in purchasing any of them.
i love lego avatar please make more i need them
Fingers crossed they'll make some for the next movie!
Besides the expensive pieces and the lack of interest from audiences, movie licenses like this would not make money when a film isn’t in theatres.
Jurassic World and Star Wars are evergreen because they produce a lot of media for these franchises.
Excellent wave of LEGO sets. Underrated! Overpriced as hell but the beautiful thing about always being an Avatar believer and a Cameron bro when everyone else was out here doubting, that meant the sets immediately went to clearance so the Navi bros (myself) grabbed these for cheap right as the second movie crossed it's first Billy at the box office. What a theme. 💗
LEGOCAM!Y!Quick correction!DISNEY DOES NOT OWN AVATAR!James Cameron does,Disney only release the film while Cameron makes and owns them!(Many people make the same mistake but fortunately the Mouses Empire does not include Avatar)
Ummm actually Disney dose own. Camron just helped make it
With so many remaining animals to still choose from for future sets, I would've supported a whole extended line of... basically just that. The human military vehicles were all right, but not as compelling for me as a speculative biology/spec evo nut.
I bought them all, they are all great sets
I think there making sets for the next movie as privately head prints that never came in other sets leaked
I’m very sure Avatar is one of those themes that will go on, just with gaps between movies. Fire & Ash is sure to get sets, from description at D23 Expo sounds like it would be perfect for Lego sets.
Honestly, they would have done a lot better to leave the whale in a different set and do a bigger version of crab tank, because that thing was cool as shit in the movie (horrible actions notwithstanding) and would make for a fun mech toy if it was given full range of motion.
I still think they did the AMP suit dirty because the design they went with is just so ugly to me
The zelda mudic is supreme
If it wasn't for the price I'd get a few of these for star wars or Xenoblade scenes
The sets are all amazing but they're way too overpriced just because of the theme, and it's a theme that has no marketability
Well lego tmnt and lego overwatch both skipped several numbers between different waves of sets so the LEGO Group would probably do the same for avatar.
i found that skimwing adventure for 10 bucks
I bought every lego avatar
I'm waiting for a really good sale to get the banshee ride and the Toruk maktai sets. Those the only ones I need.
Yeah they actually look good!
I'm glad I got them all before their swift retire, and I hope we get more
I only got the AMP Suit set, and that was on discount. They had WAY TO HIGH a price.
Because there are only 2 movies
the sets seem to be about $20 overpriced, probably because it's a licensed set, but i just could not bring myself to spend that much. the only licensed sets i buy are some of the cooler star wars sets, and the designs here, except for the cool whale, is not anything super "unique" imo
I bought as many as i could, i havent built them yet except for one. But im happy i got them i think they are really cool
When this Theme comes back, I hope they make sets for the Hammerhead Bull (Whatever the name is) from the first movie, and the Akuza Shark from the second movie.
I’m thankful for this theme to bring back the long arms and legs, now there is a chance to have a long leg/arm groot!!!
My opinion I'm not interested in the theme because it's not enough human stuff
Hey I was wondering if you could make a video covering the lego video games? I think that would be a cool video love your content keep it up
Thanks for the idea!!!
@@LegoManCamplease go with the classic games I grew up playing Lego Island on my white box computer, I haven't played any of the modern games but I LOVED playing that one as a kid in the early 2000s
It’s sad we Aussie pay lego taxes and the Americans don’t… if you knew that..?
Lol no kid under 14 cares about these movies. It was doomed. The flying creatures are cool, but I don't care for the blue cat mini figures. On discount they are not a bad deal tho.
You’re wrong, PLENTY of people under 14 care about these movies.
Stop generalising like this. Clearly there are some people out there under 14 that love these movies. They are out there in this large world.
i just dont think we cared about this its interesting to see but not a want or have for me
It’s definitely the brand; avatar hasn’t been around since 2009, it was very much of its day and hasn’t kept its relevance. Big brands like Marvel, Harry Potter and Mario are all constantly producing new content with games, films, tv, keeping its audiences attentions. Avatar was here then it was gone, no one is talking about it in 2024, they probably won’t in 2026 after the 3rd film.
I absolutely love that Avatar hasn't watered down it's franchise unnecessarily. They have made a couple great movies so far and have amazing comics to compliment and I've heard good things about the recent video game. They made quality over quantity and the long gaps in between are good to breathe and not overstimulate with the same brand constantly
Maybe they should've done more RDA sets because trees and animals are unequivocally a thousand times more boring to build than badass futuristic military vehicles. Remember guys, "war is not a game" according to Lego but at the same time lets have one of our most hyped up product lines be about a war in space with guns, you know, JUST LIKE FUCKING AVATAR?
I think part of the reason might be that no one is really a fan of Avatar.
I mean, I know plenty of adults who are diehard fans of Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, but I don't know a single person who cares the slightest about Avatar as a franchise. They might've seen the movies and enjoyed them, but they don't seem to inspire nearly the same devotion that LotR, Star Wars and Harry Potter does.
100% agree. Avatar movies seem more like, 'just go to see them because everyone else is'. I feel as though with all the planned sequels though they are trying to make it into a franchise, but maybe it just doesn't have enough content to do that yet?
Can you Make a Video of the Mario Therme
The only reason to buy any of those are the Monster/Mech Builds lets be real
No one cared for the actual story or characters cause they were all pretty bland and the story was basic
It failed because it's the wrong Avatar.
