how do you know when to calculate group index? Is it only for clayey and silty soils?

You need to calculate group index when you have to classify soil according to AASHTO Soil Classification System and it is to be calculated for every soil whom you need to classify

last soil is wrong because PI = 28 not 18 please review again so GI = 3

Yes their is a mistake in the calculation of GI. Value of GI = 3
