I guess you can call me an old Tesla fangirl, coming from Range Rover where I've looked into many other EV's since I was running out of anti bacterial wipes and gloves when visiting the dirty gas stations while the high test required for my RR model. Reasons to settle for a Tesla '22 MS LR was, ease of finding chargers on long trips, ease of instruments (just one) and of course the ability to be able to use either Auto Pilot or FSD on the interstates. Best thing since bread and butter, on the top of it all our power company offers super off peak hours at $0.01 per kWh so my monthly electricity rose by only $2 to $3.00.

As weird as it may sound, I think that part of Tesla’s appeal is that the company just seems unnaturally confident in itself. It doesn’t seem to really compare itself to or acknowledge its competitors. As a result, I think consumers just sort of categorize it as its own “thing”. At least in the US, if you want an EV, you either buy a Tesla or deliberately make the choice not to. It’s an incredibly powerful position to be in.

we don't have a factory in the UK, why would you be able to get one here, if they sell 100% of their product on preorder (with no marketing spend) in countries where they manufacture, why would they bother exporting to the UK? anyway. Teslas appeal is many fold - safest cars, highest performance, lowest maintenance, highest margin business, most rapidly increasing tech and margins sales and revenue, self driving technologies, competitive and soon to be the lowest prices. ( price reductions was always part of their business plan, they plan on undercutting ALL cars so that it is a no brainer and they take a massive share of CAR sales not only EV sales which they already dominate and slowly are taki9ng over regular gas vehicles too

Fact is that Tesla got a lot of things right straight away. They focused on the underlying technology YEARS before anyone else gave it any real thought and they've never stopped innovating and improving.
Others are "catching up" but the simple fact is that they're still behind on the basic drivetrain tech.
Until the price cut earlier this year, Tesla made a 15-20% margin on a Model 3 and Y while others struggled to make 4%, if they made any profit at all.
Most petrol cars don't make that kind of margin.
Technology is the reason: not the bells and whistles but the motors and batteries. Hell, they took a theoretical magnet arrangement that had never been physically put together and not only made it work but mass produced it. The very fact of its existence (and patent) makes their motors vastly more efficient than competitors'.
Against this level of constant innovation, legacy manufacturers are always going to remain on the back foot.
I say this as someone who doesn't own one or plan to (I'm an engineering geek). It's just the reality.

FSD hasn't killed any one (period) and it is so good at detecting humans.. and he proved it using it and was showing genuine video how that fricking old guy dan is the one who is going to kill the live saving technology by posting fud. He says things that are flawed, as well are genuine as a customer using the products. He posts experience with FSD whether it is bad or good. Elon in other hand, he says a lot of things and do deliver but timing is hit or miss as it is unpredictable. Autopilot and FSD both are in right direction and it is saving lives. People love pointing negative things and msm is constantly produces clickbait headlines saying fsd kill someone, fsd this that, but fsd - autopilot is working as designed. I still amazed that people don't see this... autopilot and fsd was soo bad at first but now there are many who are having perfect drive zero interventions, etc. It does mistake and it is more of embarrassment than of saftey lately. The impact of regulatory credits is way overstated by the media. In the most significant year (2012) they made 10% of the total revenue of the company. In recent years, despite huge increases in credits sold, they make up only around 2% of total revenue. And the competition materialized somehow only in China (BYD). I don't think anyone else has a chance to catch Tesla anytime soon.

One of their strengths is integration. Open the bonnet on a model Y and look at the air conditioning and heat exchanger.. and it’s piping. Then look at a brand new Kia EV6. Tesla has a more efficient system that fits in a shoebox and manages the heat of the cabin and battery systems.. all in one. The Kia will have twice the components, multiple fluids in different colours pipes every where with no sense to them. …. And no space for a frunk! So it’s a stark contrast between even a well respected legacy car maker and what Tesla does with regards to integration design.
On the new Model S, they’ve even built the front suspension strut bar so it doubles as air storage for the air suspension. Saves weight and materials.

Rory respectfully, there are some things missing context. Autopilot has been linked to a relatively small amount of fatalities, yes. But in the 9 years it's been in use, when compared to the average car and driver who get into fatal crashes by the hundreds of thousands each year, it's a tiny fraction of what would otherwise be the case. People need to look at these things statistically, if you have a technology that is reducing the likelihood of a fatal crash then it is saving lives, not the other way around. Nobody should expect it to never go wrong, the correct expectation is that it will be safer than a human without it on average and less likely to get into an accident, which it is by far.
We can also take it a step further with FSD Beta (their advanced system), which now has upwards of ~500 thousand users, 150 million miles driven and 0 fatalities. That is an incredible achievement that the public don't truly understand or appreciate yet. Ignoring headlines that often misrepresent the tech, Teslas have proven to be the safest cars on the road. Beyond statistics, NHTSA, Euro NCAP, and other organizations have demonstrated their capabilities in this area, yet it's one of the areas that often gets overlooked/overshadowed when people talk about Teslas, even though they are always designed with safety first in mind. I would not want my family in any other car.

Tesla is huge, not compared to what they will be in 2030. It is impressive how much they have grown in 20 years. Tesla has benefited from battery tech that evolved thanks to personal electronics demand and R&D. The GM EV-1 was the best of older battery tech. GM went for the short-term profits via ICE sales and dumped the EV-1. They crushed their EV future and it got ugly when they pulled the leases from the EV-1 customers.
It really took a company which made no money in ICE to break open the demand for EVs. The Model S was one of the first electric vehicles people wanted, not just because it was electric. Those who said some other company would have broken open the demand, I would agree, but it might have taken another decade before that happened.
Where Tesla also benefited from not being a legacy builder, is their company culture. They have less red tape. Many former Tesla employees speak of how Musk flattens departments/management ladders. In theory, just about any employee can contribute to other areas. There is not that rigid complex company structure and bureaucracy like GM or Toyota has. Part of what make Tesla still nimble is that lack of old fashion bureaucracy.
Legacy builders have been blown away by Tesla's ability to update vehicles on daily basis if they wanted. Sandy Munro, of Munro Live, and his team, spoke of getting Tesla's built months apart and seeing great improvements when they do a deep dive on a vehicle. Model 3 costs have had massive cost reductions since going into production in 2018. Most legacy builders would be lucky to reduce costs by 10% on any model. Tesla is talking cutting costs in half.
Tesla also looks at the whole picture of ownership. Having a large charging network was crucial and now they are known for the most stable and largest charging network in the world. Tesla offers Tesla insurance in many markets and hopes to expand it around the world. Keeping insurance costs down help to create more owners. Then factor in solar panels, battery backup systems for homes, and it helps make owning a Tesla a lower cost and positive expereince.
Tesla adapting has been crucial in their growth. While most, if not all, legacy builders were stumped what do about chip shortages or lithium supplies, etc, Tesla has been working on their own chip design, adapting current vehicles to work with a range of chips and batteries. People focus on how vertical Tesla is, but it is adaptable. They are willing to outside for help or do it themselves. That is a powerful tool that few seem to be trying to mimic. BYD seems to be the main one following Tesla's lead.
When Tesla revealed the next gen production line, which eliminated the assemble, paint, disassemble step, which everyone does, it showed they are willing to break tradition. This is going to save time and money. Production lines taking up less space and quality control will be easier as well. Then you look at the Tesla reducing wiring by over half through having a series of controllers and no need to run copper wires end to end over and over again. The process makes wiring easier and gives better control in many ways. The Model Y and 3 had actual rocket engineers involved in the design. These are people who put great focus on saving weight and making use of every inch of space. When you see comparisons of Y against competitors, Tesla is given high marks for plenty of space. Think about the frunk of most vehicles. Even if you just look at the back area of a Model Y, it usually has lots more space. I still remember when the Mach-E came out and how disappointed reviewers were when they popped the hatch of the Mach-E when stacked up against a Model Y.
Tesla robotics, AI, and every expanding business divisions is going to help Telsa to truly be the largest corporation on the planet. I

Having read several books on the subject, we might debate the odd timeline and detail here and there, but overall that was pretty fair. Though I think Mitsubishi might feel a little left out with its discontinued iMiEV. So what is so cool about Tesla? Yeah, Musk is iconic, and overall that still helps. How many Auto CEOs can the average person name, for instance? And Tesla keep on reiterating relentlessly that they are on a mission to help take the world to sustainability. That's a very big message, and it isn't just Musk who says it. They're all in on it at Tesla. And they do so many things so much better and differently. The Supercharging network. The NACS connector. OTA updates. Efficiency. Performance. Interactive Car Software. Autopilot, Enhanced Autopilot, Full Self Driving [FSD Beta]. The last one getting better and better as the months go by, but still in [Beta] development. And that's just the vehicles on the road. Then you have the developments. Zero cobalt batteries in most vehicles. Zero rare earth materials in motors coming. New generation production methods to make new products cheaper to buy. Lithium refining. Then there's the emerging Energy Storage business, and Solar. Oh, and the future companion robots. Nobody else does these things in quite the same way. And this is why Tesla is so cool. And I have a leased VW ID3 Performance Pro. But not next time.

I think the current phase of EVs with Lithium-Ion NMC chemistry has peaked at about 4 miles per kWh with Tesla and other EV manufacturers soon reaching that level of efficiency. The next phase of EV development has already started with the implementation of LFP batteries, but will really take off with reduced cost EVs with sodium-ion batteries and a combination of reduced cost and greater range with lithium-silicone. Reduced cost as 30kWh battery will give the same range as a NMC 60kWh battery with greater energy density and reduced weight or double the range of existing capacity batteries with the 60kWh going from 240 miles to 480 miles on a full charge. The lithium-silicone battery will also provide significantly faster charging speeds. Then it really is game over for fossil fuel ICE vehicles. 2030-2035 is now looking achievable for the ban of ICE vehicles in most market sectors.

I think the biggest Barrier for EVs is not battery technology; batteries are improving and will get cheaper over time, I believe that by 2035 we will probably have affordable BEVs capable of over 600 miles range. The real barrier is charging. I’m OK because I have a driveway and a Zappi charger. It’s people who live in terraced houses and flats who have the problem, that’s about 40% of the UK population and even more in other countries. Unless things improve dramatically they will be relying on an expensive and patchy charging network. Improving charging infrastructure is just as important as affordable BEVs. Also important is ramping up renewable energy and storage, we need more wind turbines, solar farms and energy storage.

FSD is there, thousands drive around and a car without FSD every 500.000 miles involved in a accident and with FSD every 2.5 million miles, millions and millions of logged miles. Anyone who thinks FSD goes from nothing to millions of cars at once is nuts, that would be dangerous, but FSD is here, not perfect, but it is working, it’s here and a matter of fine tuning that has been going on for years now with great steps. One more thing, the value of Tesla is bit more then making cars, Siemens is not a dishwasher company, not as bad as most old automotive reviews but a lot of important factors in trillion dollar businesses are missed as energy market and AI/robotics.Tip You should not invest yourself

It’s an innovator, inventor and mineral resources gatherer. Tesla alone has push battery technology far beyond what most would have thought possible, it’s forced other companies and manufacturers to push their limitations and designs to keep up, Tesla release most of their own software as Open-source so others can use it, they have innovated the manufacturing process with their Mega casting which others are also copying too, they have supply contracts with the worlds largest companies to guarantee delivery of parts, they have invested in mining companies to ensure mineral demand is met at a guaranteed price, CHINA changed their own laws so Tesla could build Giga factory Shanghai AND own the business outright, no other non Chinese business has ever been able to setup in China without a Chinese partner. Tesla has in a word, Revolutionised EV manufacturing over and over again to remain at the top.

Good piece. Main comment is that it's wrong to conflate Tesla the company with Tesla stock price. Tesla the company has been doing just fine since 2022 the stock price has obviously fallen a lot but as any savvy investor knows Mr Market is irrational, Tesla went too high and then fell too low and is now somewhere back near where it should be IMO.
The other thing is that the decline in the stock price wasnt caused by Musk buying Twitter. Yes, that has likely had a contributory effect, but if you look at the stock orixes of other comparable businesses, they are all down by comparable amounts over the same period - it's much more to do with the global macro environment (i.e. interest rates and consumer confidence) than anything else.

Rory IMO you missed some pertinent information and fail to understand that Tesla is a technology company more than a car company. You missed stating their goal is to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy and transport. EVs are their path to disruption of legacy auto and oil companies. They are working their way to providing mass market vehicles, progressively using profits to build factories globally, as evidenced by the upcoming Mexico giga factory. They are constantly innovating and relentlessly reducing cost, and Musk has open sourced their patents to encourage ev growth. Tesla is heavily into AI and robotics, solar, grid and domestic power storage, development of ai based virtual power plants, electric semi truck, supercharger network, insurance. They make batteries and are setting up a lithium refining plant in the US. They vertically integrate and make safe, efficient and compelling products with cutting edge software. My model 3 is a better car today than when I got it 2 years ago because of free OTA software updates. They are a very focused and well run business on a mission. Do you think you would even be talking about evs now if it wasn’t for Tesla?

If Tesla had entered into the market half a decade earlier, it might well have flopped, because the world and people's attitudes would not have been ready to accept the idea of a fully electric car. If Tesla had entered the market half a decade later, another brand could very well have had time to wedge into the market number one. @@robertp457 I posted this to someone else weeks ago about comparison between Plaid and Taycan: Tesla is made by best engineers in the world along with spaceX, apple maby... Guys working in Porsche are literally kindergarten in comparison which is evident by poor performance of the Taycan which was made knly to beat the Tesla from 2016... 2 speed gearbox in an ev is the stupidest thing ever along with poor battery design, cooling system that cannot handle the power (not to mention 760 is peak hp, normally 660) so result is a car that overheats after 2nd lap on track and gets beaten by Model 3 after that. Tesla was preparing the Plaid before Porsche even launched and decided to completely demolish it, Plaid has completely new battery with 2x radiators for cooling (along with heatpump and octovalve system), 3 motor configuration which enables true torque vectoring, completely new motors wrapped in carbon fiber to not lose torque on high speeds, completely new suspension system (watch in the vid, its also quite special) along with best euroNcap crash results, much more luxurious interior that matches the Porsche for quality (fact, sit in both back to back, difference is in layout), completely new amd computer for actual fsd, sound system that is better than 10k Burmester in the Taycan and all of this for 50k lower price, 8 years warranty and much more practicality (be that space or superchargers or much better range)... So irl Taycan takes 18s to 250kmh (270kmh top speed), Plaid does it in 9s (over 350kmh top speed, probably to 380kmh safely when unlocked) - and with that Tesla also decided to completely trach the Porsche on the track as well with cc brakes, completely new tuning for suspension and traction, f1 tires...
So you see why is the Tesla so much ahead, frankly Lucid air that has 1111hp loses to the Model X Plaid that has 1020hp and is heavier and much less aerodynamic so Porsche needs to change the whole system or add kver 1200hp to compete which they won't do.
Btw Teslas main business is energy problem solved by Model 3 and Y, and yet they still completely trash the company that has 75y of so called experience

Not only was it fast, it reimagined the concept of what a sedan should be. Then when the model x was launched, I finally couldn’t hold back. I bought one in 2017. Today I have a ‘22 Model X and a ‘22 Model Y. I’ve driven all of the other, EV’s, and aside from Rivian, none of them feel right. The cost to repair minor body damage is staggering and absurd. But overall, they are the best road trip cars, the best daily drivers, and the most trouble free vehicles I have ever owned.
