    My thoughts about Tesla changed after my first test drive of model 3. I then bought my first model y September of 2020. Best purchase of my life. I recommend anyone who has doubts about Tesla to at least do a test drive. Reading and watching others opinion is very different from what tesla feels like in real life.

      Interesting that you like driving the Tesla, I took a model 3 for a test drive recently & really didn’t enjoy it. Having driven the Ioniq 5, ID3, i3 previously, The inability to have anything other than 1 pedal driving was a real put-off. I like to be able to adjust the amount of regen when I lift my foot off the accelerator, no coasting allowed in a Tesla

    • @Eagles_Eye
      @Eagles_Eye 3 года назад +6

      Because coasting was meant for Ice vehicles to be more efficient.
      Where as for an EV it’s efficient to regenerate the energy instead of throwing it away and using the brakes alone.
      It makes no sense to NOT capture that energy.

      @@Eagles_Eye It makes no difference to the efficiency since EVs that aren't Teslas have regen on the brake pedal. If you do light braking it will just use regen to slow you down. Under heavier braking it'll use regen + brakes. If it's a good system, it'll blend the two so that you always get consistent braking regardless of how much regen braking force is available. The only difference is at what point you have to move your foot from accelerator to brake.

  • @pabloparada7158
    @pabloparada7158 3 года назад +690

    The suspension feels materially softer when using 19 inch wheels, which is the better choice for the Y. The turbine wheels in your Y are a sport wheel, which I agree don't belong on an SUV, and make the ride too harsh. But you should know that, on every Tesla, you can change the responsiveness of the steering. It's a simple setting you can change, and can even be done while driving. Lastly, you can also change the amount of regen you get from accelerator pedal. This is also a setting. I think the Tesla one pedal driving is marvelous.

    • @bolt5564
      @bolt5564 3 года назад +44

      I think his comment about regenerative braking was that in some EVs (eg Chevy Bolt) you can pull a paddle behind the steering wheel to activate regenerative braking so that when you lift off the accelerator you can Coast but then when you want to return to regenerative breaking you can activate it without having to go into some menu to adjust it on the touch screen.

      Well said. With the Y having been out in the US for well over a year now, those of us here know exactly what you said above. I got the LR with 19” wheels, which is the default. I changed to aftermarket 19” wheels that look more like the 20” wheels because I prefer the look, but the 19” has helped me avoid the bumpiness. I live in the Washington DC metro area, where roads are really not great. Lots of potholes, etc, and the ride is fine. There are also now a few options for 3rd party adjustable suspensions that sort out the ride if you insist on getting the larger wheels.

      I disagree, think he didn't do his usual excellent job here. For instance he has the suspension understanding not quite right - fitting the smallest wheels and checking that the steering wheel and acceleration menus are in relaxed mode would solve a lot of the issues he had with the sportiness; he omitted to say that braking regen levels are controlled through the menus rather than paddles, and at least in my Model 3 can be turned into a total 'coasting' mode ie zero regenerative braking, or made to imitate a gas vehicle transmission inching forward from a stop. Maybe he didn't know, maybe he was under time pressure in making this one, maybe he got lazy, maybe the editor did a very poor job. I'm actually annoyed at Tesla these days for poor service, but i still think this was a bit unfair or non-diligent on Rory's part.

  • @flipadavis
    @flipadavis 3 года назад +165

    I wholeheartedly disagree with the paddles on the steering wheel for regen. I think it's actually a huge positive to use your foot and only your one foot to control speed right exactly where you want it. In most coasting situations where you want to maintain speed your foot really doesn't move. It just sort of holds in place at the speed you want to coast. I don't bother to check but you can confirm you are coasting by looking at the power meter to see that you are basically not adding power but not regaining power either. Once you get used to it you actually stop thinking about it and it becomes this one simple connection to your brain and coasting becomes second nature. One foot input directly to brain for most of the driving.
    Once you introduce paddles it may seem like you have more "control" but all you are doing is adding more complexity input to your brain. Now you have your one input, the foot, for forward and two inputs, your foot on brake AND you fingers for regen, for slowing down. At best you have two inputs, foot for forward and fingers for slowing. He mentions that it gets tiring having to twitch your foot constantly to go the speed you want. I could say the same with traditional transmissions where in any traffic at all you are constantly timing your coasting and accelerating so you don't have to brake to maintain distance between you and the car in front. In doing so you are constantly thinking and letting off and pushing the accelerator and inevitably moving your foot over and back from the brake to the accelerator. One pedal is dead simple in comparison.
    But inevitably whether with really strong regen on the pedal or with paddles you will eventually be using the brake pedal in where you just need to brake harder. Then with the paddles you are mixing regen with paddles and foot on brake and foot on accelerator. I have both a Tesla and a Volt and after years of using both I find that in the Volt I set the regen to the hardest setting but end up just using the brake pedal when regen isn't enough and completely skip using the paddles. Never use the paddles anymore.

    • @cobrachannel100
      @cobrachannel100 3 года назад +15

      I concur. I used to own Model X and there they used to have at least 2 options for regen. I always used standard but I used coasting from 5 mph down to complete stop. Hence, I needed my friction brakes to completely stop.
      Now, for a couple of weeks, I have replaced MX with M3P. That has no regen adjustments and I changed stopping setting of "roll" to "hold", which now uses regen all the way down to a complete stop. I am used to it and love it. It helps with efficiency and I never pretty much use the brakes (only emergency situations or when I need to quickly brake). Otherwise, to mitigate what Rory is talking about, one can also use adaptive cruise control in conjunction with regen. In other words, I use ACC even on city streets, not to mention highways, most of the time. Hence, one pedal driving for the win.

      @@teabagtowers3823 Well most German cars are fairly well built (mechanicals notwithstanding). In all my years the only company that truly competes and sometimes exceeds German build quality is Lexus. The Model Y fit and finish, material choice, and build quality is honestly that of a $30,000 car. But that’s ok because I didn’t just pay for the car. I paid for the car, acceleration, infinite software updates, self driving, all the cool stuff like built in dash cam and sentry mode and pet mode and “Joe Mode”. I paid for the supercharging network and I paid for the fact that my toddler LOVES the car lol. Road trips have never been happier. Surely if Tesla wasn’t building a car while building a charging network while also sending a rocket to space they could have made a better interior. All the Germans have to focus on is building a car. But I digress.

    I’ve said it before… Tesla should put air suspension in the Y. Tesla is to Apple as its rivals are to Android which have very primitive and often unituitive UIs, whereas Tesla has really thought about the user journey and UX to the point of being very much in their own class. It’s wonderful that there are more EV SUV s to choose from, but whenever I take them for a test drive, I’m reminded of how everyone is playing catch-up with Tesla… many have start-stop buttons, the regen is still on silly steering-wheel paddles, there are dust-magnet knobs on the console for air-con and sound systems, AR notifications on the front windscreen which cannot be disabled (it’s been noted to cause severe headaches in some), poor boot space, no frunk, no over-air updates (improving the car as it ages), no sentry equivalent, and, as on the Ionic 5, door handles which are designed to break nails and trap tiny hands. The Mustang Mach-e - the one I test drove anyway - had an accelerator pedal so jittery, and breaks so keen, that the safest option ws to switch to 1-pedal mode. The bottom line is there is more choice for everyone now. The problem is however, once you have owned a Tesla (of any type), it’s difficult to switch to something else - it’s like switching from Apple/Mac to Andorid/PC - there will be pain, frustration, anger and a sense of loss.

Performance on the motorway was brilliant! Very addictive acceleration. Performance version for me totally uneccessary. Not sure on the Y. Ioniq 5 drove better and was plenty fast enough. Teslas advantage is the supercharger network but I think I would actually use that maybe 3-4 times a year. @@Rahul-Nalawade Pretty simple my friend. I live in Australia and we don't have any Model Ys here yet. Tesla haven't even announced a date you can buy one. I didn't seek the ride in the Model 3 out. A mate has one. We used it to go to a client meeting. I then did some reading about the suspension setup on the Model Y after feeling sick in the Model 3. You're jumping to conclusions for no reason. If I could drive one I would.

    I’ve found the new MIC (Made In China) Model 3’s to be by far and away the better build quality - which is the consensus online among customers too. I picked up my new Model 3 the other week and can confirm, it was flawless, looked like any other German car. Also, the range argument as others have said is getting old across car journo’s, I can easily cover a north to south trip in the UK on a single charge driving as I would my old Golf R. Charging is also a breeze and I can get on my way with a full tank in only 30 mins, half a tank in 10-15 mins. The supercharger network with the automated route planning also makes it painless and thoughtless.

    Bro... You cant expect a comfortable ride on sport rims in any car... 19 inches are way better... For your needs.... And alot of the driving dynamics, also regen and steering are adjustable on the touch screen in fact there are differrnt driving modes including a track mode..... Lets not forget the driving assisting software and security and crash safety that puts volvo to shame and actively predicts accidents, you can't do a tesla review without talking about that ... Lastly reliability in the drive train and battery... I don't think any of the competitors are close to tesla when we talk about the things i just mentioned... If you are buying these cars. Tesla safety is excellent - one reason I have a model 3 coming soon, but i also have a Volvo XC 90 and it is better in many ways: blind spot monitoring is indicated on the mirrors where it should be (not forcing you to look to the center of the car), it has rear cross-traffic warnings (how does Tesla not do this?), volvos’ pilot assist is rock solid with none of the goofy phantom braking of the model 3 autopilot, it has rain-detecting wipers that work, etc, etc. I mean at the end of the day, I got a model 3 because it’s a great EV -- but there is a lot of room for improvement, especially in the premium car range.

    Another excellent review Rory. The model 3 with a hatch would be my choice. Hopefully the improvements in build quality, construction methods will come to the 3 in time. I agree about the regen. The quick and easy adjustment from steering mounted paddles for the win. I’d also like the option of a simple head up display. I’m not an SUV fan (I hate them). I've driven both the Model 3 and the Y. Both long-range versions. After a couple days in each, I preferred the Y, mostly because of the commanding seating position. The ride is about the same as my S4. Firm and responsive. I also drove the iPace and the Mach E, and preferred Either Tesla by a mile. I don't know why anyone would buy the Jaguar. Though the Mach E is definitely going to appeal to a lot of people who want a more conventional vehicle.

    Nice review but on charging speed, you need to stop focusing on max rates and focus on charge under the curve, ie the rate over time, lots of cars now rapid charge faster because the charge rate doesn't fall off like Teslas does.

    • @dmitrii336
      @dmitrii336 3 года назад

      Nope, there is no 'lots of cars' that charge faster. Tesla currently offers the best system on the market (batteries with fast charging capabilities + fast charging network).
      Also every owner should understand that the faster you charge the faster battery degrades.

    • @Tesla-Info
      @Tesla-Info 3 года назад

      @@dmitrii336 They still use 350v (400v on the new MS) and not 800v charging which the premium brands now use, and the charge profile tapers off quickly in comparison above 50%.
