Casting Bob Newhart in Big Bang Theory was a stroke of genius. His character was an excellent addition to the show. I always looked forward to seeing him, especially his sweet but long-suffering interactions with Sheldon. In this scene, I especially enjoyed Amy's adorable reaction to meeting "Professor Proton": "I can't believe I dress like a celebrity!"

In a weird way, he appreciates Sheldon. He appreciates that, in spite of Sheldon's social woes, he inspired a world-class theoretical physicist. The social woes are still aggravating for Prof, but they are annoying for almost everyone on the show. Sheldon represents the success Prof did have, even with a failed marriage, a tarnished science reputation, and a fading life.

And character development is the most important thing i look for in a show. Look at Howard he had a lot of character development going from a gross guy to husband, then father to 2 kids
