This dude just sits down at an instrument and downloads the skill he needs for it from the Matrix.
lol
and he even looks like Neo lol
I KNEW he was cheating!
1cm deep ocean.
If you become really good at one instrument and actually learn some decent theory, it then just becomes transporting those notes to a different medium. If you solo with what's in your head then it's easier, but if you play an instrument via visual patterns only then it will take longer to convert it to another.
2:45 "Hi Dave, how's it going?" - "Hi, my name is Dave"
Damn, Jacob's just quicker than the rest in EVERY way
He has a faster metabolism
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Jacob Collier is a time traveler: Confirmed.

Not even 10 seconds in, and bro is already professionally playing a cardboard box
Its called cajón, it's a Spanish instrument

He already is in some ways! My girlfriend studied him a bit in her fourth year modern music class
This bothers me.
Which College/School did that?
I bet he can play a Yamaha Motorbike
I mean if you rev it right you can make a song

That'd be logical, as it would be rock.

I've never heard him play anything other than piano, had no idea he could play drums and guitar to that level. Mind blowing.
You should definitely check out his Tiny Desk concert then
I've always just assumed he could play most instruments. Once you understand music at HIS level, you basically CAN play anything.
@@gasser5001 Nah, hat's like saying you can box because you're knowledgeable about boxing. Take piano for example, all the music theory in the world won't help your fingers do what you want them to do unless you put the time in on the instrument and practice. Which he definitely has on these instruments.
@@LucasKingPiano
Yep exactly. He knows the theory and what notes to play because that's universal, but technique isn't. He 100% spent a lot of time in learning these instruments.
@@gasser5001 You still have to practice the physical technique to apply that knowledge on each instrument though.
I bet this guy can even play the yamaha leaf blower
He plays awesome leaf-cleaning arpeggios.
Autumn Leaves in every key with that thing for sure.

I can imagine the sales guys just dreaming that he'd sign on with Yamaha.
Yes, mastering that strange instrument with the 88 keys in one sitting

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
after he's done with any of them hes just like 'nice'
There's nothing he can't play. 😂
how long did it take for you to write that up hahahahaha
Ha!! I fucking love you for this!
Fun fact: Jacob's strongest instrument is actually the triangle. He was a triangle major at Juilliard but later changed to the hexagon
"So this is more like, orchestral percussion?"
*Casually slaps snare drum*
"Yeah, very nice."
*analyzing timbre and resonance of waves in the air*
He also slaps a cardboard box at one point early on the the beginning of the video as well
a good snare sound is a best sound in music.. no cap

I remember that one Question: "Would you rather want to speak every language in the world or be able to play every instrument in the world?"
I think jacob chose the obvious.
Of course you'd pick the latter, the only language everyone understands
@@Den_Anderen amazing response
Gee I would have to, I am good at picking up instruments but he easily has way more talent then probably anyone I know
In case you didn't notice, he *also* plays the violin.
Really? I thought that was her mom only, never seen a video of him playing
He plays everything tbh
No he can’t, it’s one of the few instruments he can’t play.
I'm just waiting for him to pull out the theremin
deeps mered mess tbh I feel like he would enjoy theremin since it’s entirely body movement that creates the sound
Jacob doesn't need any of those instruments.
I'll listen to an entire album of Jacob just hitting the boxes in the beginning.
I just went back and listened to that. That was truly a slice of magic. 0:06

I bet his parents trapped him on an island since birth with every instrument known to mankind and he just escaped.
Isaiah Higgins - Sounds like a great action movie.
Not entirely untrue; he frequently tells stories about how he spent all his childhood years basically playing in this recording room full of instruments his mom has in their house. So yes, an island of sorts and an escape of sorts.
I picture him rocketing off of the island on a piano with tubas that shoot rainbows strapped to the back

Honestly, what the heck is that rhythm?! I know he played some crazier ones earlier, but I love the funk in this!
ITS SO GOOD
Wow you have great ears! All I was able to hear was Eleanor Rigby at 7:36
Do you know what he’s playing at 6:00 ?
00:10
The most British Jacob has ever sounded
For their prices, Yamaha honestly makes really high quality instruments. Especially their entry-level acoustic guitars.
I have one of their $500 guitars (with pickup). It's been mistreated a lot, used at the campfire and such, I was always more into the piano otherwise I would have give it more love. It's still perfectly in tune whenever I pick it up. My friend has a guitar worth the same as my car. He finds it strange as well that it still sounds good.
I had a Motif XS 8. Also quite well built, although I'm more into Nords now. Hope they wont fail me.. Nord Grand sounds unparalleled. All I need now is a sprinkling of Jacob's skill. What's that? Not possible? "Doesn't work like that" ?? :(
He's so polite.
"Nice to meet you!"
"Likewise, thank you sir!"
1:58 bruh he just sits down after asking a question and heads straight into some absurd polyrhythms im done
That's just the Purdie shuffle really fast, nothing special...
Rohin Shah Yeah you’re right bro nothing special at all
@@officialrohinmusic Doesn't sound like a Purdie Shuffle. Maybe it's the downbeat displacements?
I think he's playing a 3 over 5 polyrhythm, but don't know how he feels it, in quintuplets, triplets or even sixteenth notes maybe
@@officialrohinmusic that's not the purdie shuffle
Most instrument shops/expo workers when a normal musician walks up to their booth:
*heavy sarcasm* “Yes, please come noodle all over our gear”
When Jacob fckin Collier walks up:
*uncontainable enthusiasm* “Yes, PLEASE come noodle on this. Look over there, noodle in that! And come to this room and noodle all over these”
i could watch this all day
Such an inspirational humble guy. I really hope I can see him and meet him one day
Indeed. In another Universe deprived of instruments he would have ended up working on the shop floor of Waitrose or John Lewis charming elderly well to do customers. Bless.
3:13 perfect pitch.... Just casual stuff
I thought he only has relative perfect pitch buuuuut no. Ofc he has to have perfect pitch. I just Googled lol
@Conflux maybe to standard, but drop d flat or whatever either memory or perfect pitch
He has relative pitch, he said it in a video once. But you can reach a state, where relative pitch ist like perfect pitch, so whatever^^
didnt even realize but this bitch just tuned it by ear perfectly with note names and just like.... WHAT
Sebastian Sprotte can you link the video I’m really curious if this is true?
Jacob: have you ever played this tuning before?

4:08 Literally brought my phone to my ears to hear that "mystifying" sound as he did with the guitar.
this guy's a superstar. everywhere he plays, people just talk about him and listen.
Even when he was tuning down the guitar it was magical...
Alright someone get me to a practice room as fast as you can. I have some catching up to do. Might take me a couple centuries though...
I feel like Jacob forgets that he's the one making the music and gets just as excited about it as everyone listening.
That's exactly it. He's so fluent his ideas come out in music as quickly as they occur to him. He's not performing he's just bringing you along for the ride.
The ease at which he plays instruments is almost frightening. And his level of respect is on par.
6:00, half expected the mario 64 water theme.
He's on another level. He plays so fast it seems like he's just randomly pressing things that my 3 year would press, but I'm guessing in his genius mind he actually hears chords lol
He is a creator’s dream, being able to fully appreciate the thought and programming put into each instrument and to explore new avenues as well
He's not just the perfect musician, he is an amazing example of a near perfect human being in general. Guy can work a crowd like no other, probably the nicest, most sincere person I've watched on RUclips, and above all, his passion for life exudes from him uncontrollably. We should all strive to be like Jacob.
Oh believe me I do

Damn, that's exactly how my hands/fingers looks like when playing piano, but I wonder why he sounds so amazing, while mine sound like a goat on its period.
I got to play that trans acoustic once. A rep brought one into a local music shop when it was just coming into fruition. Pretty rad instrument. Yamaha is a very innovative brand that a lot of people sort of forget about.

"It's a humbling experience to be confronted, with every bite, by one's own limitations." - Anthony Bourdain. God damn, that's how I feel with every note and beat that Jacob plays, but dude sure as hell makes me want to get to work.
I think Jacob is probably the most talented musician on the planet but it takes more than talent to move the heart. He's mastered the technical part of music but the emotional is still growing.
His best music is a long way away, but I can't wait for the day he makes a song everyone knows by heart.
"but I can't wait for the day he makes a song everyone knows by heart."
He probably won't. I think you really don't know what he's doing.
"but the emotional is still growing"
Ah, no. You are judging him by some bizarre standards. The emotional is VERY well developed. You just like different things. Go watch 20 or 30 of his videos. He has some wonderful stuff. But much of it is vey complex, and likely not as simple as you would like.
what a happy dude
the constant faces of the men who just feel entirely inadequate in his presence... and jacob has no idea. so humble
When he sat down at the drum kit that was just insane. Whatever he was doing on the hi hat.... (1:58)
