    • @killerb255
      @killerb255 8 месяцев назад

@@michaelbmw1931 Oculink is a port that passes through PCI-Express lanes to an external port. The port itself looks like a smaller DisplayPort jack (not mini-DisplayPort, and no, a DisplayPort cable won't fit). Unlike Thunderbolt:
      - There's no licensing fee from Intel or any other company
      - There's no other conversion stuff going on, for better and for worse, which means:
      - Not plug-and-play. So unplugging an Oculink cable with a live load on it is almost the same thing as pulling a PCI-Express card out while the system is powered on. You probably won't fry your motherboard, but your OS ain't gonna like it. So plug it in before you turn on your system, and unplug it AFTER you power down!
      - It doesn't carry power. So whatever's plugged into that Oculink cable will need its own power source. Since the most common use case is an external graphics card, you're going to need a power supply for it anyway.
      - No security--at least not to the degree that Thunderbolt has to prevent hacking attempts through PCI-Express.
      - At the same speeds when compared to Thunderbolt and USB4, it'll generally perform better.

Honestly all thats left is to have an order of magniture in efficiency, ie total power consumption is sub 10w (and thats including the screen at max brightness and at full load) But not being power limited, the silicon itself needs to be that efficient. The current performance is fine, maybe closer to rx 6600 in performance but its the efficiency thats the issue.

Unfortunately, this is a big deal breaker for me, since I very often play my games in short sessions, which is only possible if I can quickly turn it off in the middle of the game, turn it back on when needed, and just continue playing. Sure these and the ones from Asus and kther manufacturers are cool but you pretty much have to look at them like youre buying a low powered gaming laptop with little support after launch. The steam deck is more of a console like expirence and steam is actually insentivised to support it because the longer they support it the more people will buy games on their store to play on it.

9:34. Look at the frame rate. Barely changing. And just looking at it. Excellent frame times. Pretty good consistency.
I mean that seems to be a real benefit for APUs. Their architecture it's is designed for such close quarters operation.
You really do get better throughput. On average with an APU. That's also what's so good about X3D chips.
But the fact that they include oculink. That's a feature rather than an option. Makes me excited to see its performance.
And the controls. Chefs kiss. 👌
Symmetrical and hall sensor. The only problem I can see with the controls is those damn dumb thumbsticks.
I was thinking maybe you could get a Dremel. And just hollow the suckers out.
Or maybe even and aftermarket thumbstick keycap. That gives it height. For more accuracy. And his jelly like for comfort and grippiness.
But if they're too high. It might not be able to close.
Other than that this thing is freakin amazing.!!!!
And definitely I would love to see the overclocked version without the use of a hockey link connected GPU. But certainly an over a clock with an oculate GPU as well.!

Yup, the Steam Deck is just so much nicer, plus they worked very closely with AMD and it shows given how amazing the Steam Deck is at lower TDPs, which honestly is the most important thing with a handheld, if you need 28W for the APU to really hit it's stride then it's not really great for handheld use, well unless you're fine getting an hour or less of play time.

I just really wish other manufacturers would work with Valve on picking up officially supported Steam OS as a OS choice on purchase as Windows 11 is the big reason I still won't really consider these other handhelds as Windows 11 is awful on handhelds and has soooo much bloat, after using the Steam Deck I can't see myself going back to Windows for a handheld.

This is very cool, I feel the form factor is little too small. The Max is big bulky and heavy to hold but this has a fiddly keyboard and bit chunky. If they slimmed this down went to an 8" screen possibly a 9" it would be perfection. That cpu has serious firepower, the next gen of apu should negate need of a egpu. The 780m is nearly good enough.

Been considering replacing my MSI Delta 15 with something more portable but because of the way the game engine works, it stresses single cores more than lots of other games (I think because it was a custom engine developed in 2004/5 to run optimally on the single core processors of that era?) Anyway - would love to see how it runs if you're able to make a video!
