  • Small block chevy engine blocks came in two different major formats before the LS engine. Roller blocks and Non-roller blocks. Any block from 1986 and up is considered a roller block but its possible for them to lack some features that I show in this video.
    The largest difference is that the newer blocks have a 1 piece rear main seal where the older block has a 2 piece rear main seal.
    There are also differences in the oil valley. The newer blocks have tapped holes for a lifter plate where the old has a smooth valley.
    The newer block also has two tapped holes in the front near the first cam bearing so that a cam retaining plate can be used.
    The newer block also has a taller lifter bore.
