    For the summer holiday we've been away, the only thing plugged in was the fridge. Anything else was off as we were away. We received for that time being away the same bill as we would be into the property and use it daily. I thought that isn't right so I called the energy supplier. The energy supplier answer was that the electricity meter recorded the consumption so we used what is been recorded. Me personally I don't trust smart meters, I believe that the supplier can change the figures through the smart meter and increase the bill. That's what I can say after my experience.

      Key here is 'futures' - suppliers are buying weeks & months in advance, it's a lag market. Energy used today was bought when wholesale was still higher.
      We'll see costs drop as energy bought today at lower wholesale, is reflected over time. Ofgem set a cap & that's affected by the wholesale price in a cycle - so the cap will fall, meaning suppliers CAN'T charge us the same price as now & just pocket the difference!

    It is worth mentioning that certain locations and installations are not suitable for a smart meter installation. This may be because of a remote location with no mobile telecoms signal coverage, no internet availability, no constant power supply, and certain other electrical issues. In those cases companies have no choice other than to install an old fashioned electromechanical meter.

    • @MartinE63
      @MartinE63 10 месяцев назад +9

      They do have a choice, a smart meter without connectivity. A consumer can, at least at the moment, insist on a dumb meter which will, for electricity supply, be electronic (gas may be different)
      Electromechanical electricity meters are no longer being manufactured, certified or re-certified. If it’s removed for whatever reason other than possibly a replacement of a meter backboard or a supply head then it’s scrapped. That’s been the case since 2005 or so. They cannot be fitted as a replacement at any demand level.

    The point that gets me is, when I bought my house nobody said that that the meter was not included in the buying price or that it belonged to someone else. I was under the impression that everything in the house belonged to me after the sale was completed. I understood not to interferer with it.
    So, if the meter belongs to someone else and we don’t know who, (although my meter was changed by the energy company a few years ago so I assume that it belongs to them) why am I paying for the electricity that is going through their meter. This meter is not outside, it is inside my house.
    Secondly, why do the energy companies have the right to forcibly, and without me being present, enter my property, when I will be breaking the law if I touch ‘their’ meter?
    Tell me how the law is fair?
    Next question, why can’t a smart meter be changed? It’s just a meter
    Third question, Smart meters emit dangerous radiation waves into the home and provide an energy company with access to control my appliances and steal data (which is a valuable asset to them and provides an income for them). Why are they allowed to enter my property, albeit remotely, and control the appliances inside my home?
    You are the lawyer. Please tell me and explain how the law is morally fair to everyone. Also, if I refuse their engineer into my property and I am prosecuted, where is the harm that I have done.
    I agree that if I use electric, gas, or water, I must pay for the amount used, (I don’t like the prices, but I must pay for it) and I don’t have a problem with that.
    It is the enforcement part that I disagree with. I was brought up to believe that an Englishman’s home is his castle. I can allow access to maintain at a suitable time and I have no problem with that. I cannot accept the morality of an outsider being able to enter my property with force and install equipment that I disagree with in principle.
    Laws are now being created, not to protect the populous, but to generate income for the few. This is wrong.

This is the information given to me in response to a question I asked my MP at the beginning of October.

      The supply up to and including the meter belongs to National Grid and your supply company. Anything after the meter is your responsibility. Do you have a mobile phone? That is the only thing being emitted by a smart meter they have a sim card in them and the data is transmitted via the phone signal. They cannot 'cut you off' if you do not pay they will make the meter a pay as you go.

      @@lesley1174 I understand that the National Grid owns and maintains the distribution systems. I believe that my supplier paid for the meter and its installation therefore it belongs to them. However, it is the powers they have to access that meter and change it for something I don't agree with, at any time they choose that concerns me. I also understand that if I use electricity, gas, water, bananas, etc., they all need to be paid for.
      A letter sent from the Director EM Radiation Research Trust to the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero and Ofgem in September explains the risks and dangers of the radiation from these meters (www.radiationresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/LETTER-OF-COMPLAINT-ENERGY-BILL-1.pdf).
      This bill asks who is responsible for these meters and if they are covered by liability insurance. The answer was that the government did not know.
      I also understand that radiation has a cumulative build-up effect, i.e., the electricity running through your house, the smartphone, the wifi, and the TV. Everything that is 'smart' or carries electricity emits radiation that builds up and has damaging effects for some people. I want as little of it as possible in my house.

      @@celiablomfield2895 You're entitled to believe that if you wish, but I would just say that the likelihood of such a thing happening is around zero. To begin with it would have almost no effect on CO2 emissions so would be of no real benefit (power isn't generated as you switch a kettle on, it is pre-generated), but secondly any PM stupid enough to enact something that meant half the population's freezers defrosted every other month, would not be PM for very long.
      Here's the "dirty secret" on why the government want everyone on smart meters. It's not so that you personally can monitor your energy usage better and so reduce your costs by switching off lights when you leave a room. You don't need a smart meter for common sense to tell you that having two televisions on at the same time is wasting you money. The real reason is so the UK as a whole can have a more accurate map of demand at different times of the day and in different areas. This way power stations can more accurately predict how much power they need to be generating at any given time. We have little to no storage capacity in this country, it's not really feasible, so surplus power often goes to waste. At times of over generation, big industries like aluminium production that requires huge amounts of power will be offered this surplus almost free if they ramp up production at these times etc. If they don't over produce, black outs and no one wants that either. Smart meters allow that balancing act to be more accurately predicted since along with the monthly reading for billing purposes, they also can give a half hourly breakdown of consumption and may lead to incentives to use power at different times, a bit like industry get, if the wind turbines are generating more than normal for example. But this way, generating less waste helps UK CO2 emissions a lot more than monitoring your personal consumption and helps reduce the costs to suppliers and thus the customer bills.

      You have the voluntary option of having both your gas and electricity connections removed, and then not having a contract. However, if you choose to use gas and/or electricity from the network, then you are also deemed to have chosen to accept that contract. This happens everyday in all sorts of situations. It isn't tyranny - it is what is required to have a functioning, lawful, society.

So in order for the smart meter to work they need to install a signal dish booster on our roof! A bit rich as the supplier isn't supplying and makes a profit from the charge, plus it's taxed on top of that profit, in the form of VAT on each invoice. The energy companies are obliged to remove the meter for free and cap the supply, when asked. Then the gas network company will then inspect the pipes for rust and replace them if necessary. Don't tell them you want it completely removed, otherwise it will cost you money. You can leave the infrastructure in place in case you sell the house, just have the meters removed and the supply capped, at their expense.

    Having said that what would be the situation if, knowing an increase was imminent, you were to over-report your consumption and pay the subsequent bill, as presented? It surely helps the supplier with THEIR cash flow. Cash flow is important to them I know - as they regularly drain my bank account (holding my money in their system as a +ve balance - in an unwanted attempt to help ME budget). I'd be interested to hear your comments.

    • @Sasahara-Lafiel
      @Sasahara-Lafiel 10 месяцев назад

      Giving a false reading irrespective of if it is higher or lower would be an offence.
      Given the cap change is only 5%, for every £1 of over reporting you'd save 5p. So you have to over report by a huge amount to be worth it (It would also be very obvious if you give regular accurate reading before).
      If you were that desperate for the 5% saving you wouldn't have the spare cash to do it anyway. Keeping you cash in a 5+% savings account over a year will be comparable and legal.
      The only time it would save a decent amount if you were coming off a really good fixed rate, but there won't be many of them (if any) still running now.

    • @ukeleleEric

      If you weren't excessive in your readings, they would probably not worry. If your balance is significantly positive, they might suggest you reducing your payments. They COULD even not take a payment one time, or take a smaller amount proactively. The whole system is predicated on smoothing things out, so they don't mind you having a big positive balance at certain times. With Octopus, I have used both the contact method and their website to reduce my payment in the last year. If you have been with them for a while, their automated system will look at history and give you a suggested figure to increase/decrease. I had to ring them direct once, though, because their system was still looking at our usage from the previous year before we had solar panels installed. The call-handler was reasonable, and took my suggested amount of a decrease without a problem, as I think he was impressed by how detailed my analysis had been, even telling him one or two figures that his system didn't.

(2) The retailers of energy are not the suppliers of the product and in general only buy it from tthe generating company once they have acquired a customer (3) Whilst they like to think their terms and conditions are a "done deal" and mandatory on the customer, this surely conflicts with Contract Law where the offeree has the right to accept or reject an offer on substantive terms (4) If for instance, no agreement is reached, then surely a deemed contract would be including the substantive terms that had alredy been rejected and be viod. or voidable. Perhaps the imposition of a smart meter or reading of their meters could be construed as substantive in the eyes of the customer. Another video on these points would be welcome IMHO.

      You don’t have to read your meter, but you’ll get an estimated bill.
