- Former Pres. George W. Bush spoke to first responders atop the pile at Ground Zero three days after Sept. 11, 2001.
"I can hear you, the rest of the world hears you, and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon," he said. Responding to the president's words, some rescue workers chanted, "USA, USA!"
This Monday marked 22 years since the attacks, during which 2,977 people lost their lives.

This was the last moment in history the country was truely united.
Unfortunately it was based on lies and greed. To the victims of 9/11 both foreign and domestic RIP.
Nah 1860s we’re the best
@@PHXNKVHXLIC Yes but I just mean being united. Not most united. This marks the last time we were in my view.
@@tibodeclercq2131 I was just trolling, the nation has never been “united”. Racism and discrimination has been around since 1760’s in the US. From slavery to womens rights to treatment of Native Americans, to Civil Rights Movement to LA riots/general police racism, discrimination towards immigrants (legal or not) and it will never ever go away because that’s just part of humanity.
@@PHXNKVHXLIC it never will anywhere in the world. But bush had a 90+% approval rating after 9/11. Not that Bush was a great president, he wasn't, but this shows that many across different backgrounds stood after a cause. Something we barely see today.
Unless some aliens would attack us then maybe we would be more united.
Say what you want about W Bush, but his choice of words after the "we can't hear you!" interjection was on point and on par to some of the greatest political statements in American history. I remember seeing this on TV 20+ years ago when I was in high school and it always stayed in my mind. Glad to revisit it here.
I couldn't have said it any better, myself!
Even more impressive when you know he really meant every word. His presidency may have fallen from grace after that day, but his desire for a better America is without question.
Great soundbite but nothing more than that. George Bush should be in jail for the rest of his life.
That “God bless America!” from that guy in the crowd was passionate.

GWB was actually VERY good at off the cuff unscripted speaking. He was horrible at pre-prepared speeches which is where is reputation of being an idiot come from. Chills baby chills...W really said what we needed to hear that day..we were heartbroken, stunned, devastated, shocked, hurt and speaking for myself LIVID , BEYOND ANGRY...when the President said "hear ALL OF US soon" the country said it WITH HIM.
Bush turning "I can't hear you" into a rallying cry was an absolutely genius moment of speech-giving. Dubya could be charming if he wanted.
This was the best heckler counter moment in the history of speeches. It was almost like a divine intervention so W can make that powerful statement.
@@kzrsosa That moment with Obama responding to the heckler with "I wanna hear from you" and then playing the move of "and we've got free speech in this country" was pretty up there as well
GW went Ric Flair when he said, "they'll hear from ALL OF US soon"
George W. Bush was a president who changed my mind too many times. When he was elected president I was enthusiastic, a few days after September 11th I felt he was a very close President, the whole United States of America joined him, then as the years went by it was a bit of a disappointment. I always believe that his could have been a better presidency.
He was not a good president but he was incredibly earnest and that goes a long way.
He was warned several times that 9/11 was coming and did nothing. 2 trillion dollars gone the day before 9/11? And the accounting department getting destroyed at the Pentagon? Interesting
George W. Bush was a decent President, not off the charts. But he is practically Abe Lincoln compared to the flakes we've had the last couple elections, and the one we are about to get in 2024.
Im 30 i was in the 3rd or.4th grade when this happened. And i cant watch this without crying. Its rough. Its powerful.
You don’t remember the grade you were in Planter ? 🪴💩🪴💩🪴🔥🤡
The guy who said we cant hear you made a historic moment.
One of the hardest USA chants I can ever imagine hearing
When was the last time New York City was this united
Born in 2004, I obviously have no recollection of any of this.
Still, it is interesting to see how well George W. Bush was able to comfort and unite the nation following this tragedy. Had he made better decisions...like not invading Iraq in 2003 for no reason...had he better handled Hurricane Katrina...had he kept the economy from going into a massive recession in 2008...he truly could've been one of the best Presidents.
He started of so strong and lost it all over his eight years, it's genuinely really disappointing.
And I say this all as a Democrat...at the very least, I can say George W. Bush was earnest. Even if I don't like what he did, I can at least respect him as a person.
Can't blame Iraq all on Bush. Unfortunately he was getting the wrong intel. They were telling him Saddam was building WMDs but that turned out to be incorrect. Not saying Saddam was an innocent leader but President Bush was not given all the facts.
Also, Hillary Clinton voted to support the invasion, and he could not have done it without the approval of Congress anyway. There was just enough blame to go around to everyone, but it's easy to blame it all on Bush.
This was the last time our great country was truly united
This is one of those speeches that make you feel patriotic even if you're not American.
He wasn’t perfect but I will always have a soft spot for old W
What a badass moment.

That last true American Democratic President
That was Bush's greatest moment.
In fairness, hindsight it usually 20, 20, and this was a national tragedy. If we could allow our response to september 11, 2001 to instuct our sensibilities in the future it might serve as a deterrent to an incoherent rush to war. Bless the victims. May god bless america.
? Rush? We were already at war. On the prosecution of the war from that point, I agree it didn't make sense how they decided they were going to try to Americanize Baghdad and Kabul though, yes, I would agree with that.
@@naysayer1238 We should have waited a year before we launched multiple attacks on multiple fronts. We had the world behind us, if bush would have toured the world visiting all our allies gaining more support the war on terrorism would be over. I was watching an old documentary of veterans saying what they would have done different in hindsight. All of them said they would have waited to launch. Anyway no point in dwelling on it, we did what we did.
I didn’t agree with George W Bush on most issues. But dammit he did such an outstanding job of unifying the country here in this moment.

It's ironic that it took such tragedy to truly unite a nation. This speech is raw, the footage is amateur, yet it remains one of the most powerful speeches ever delivered by a U.S president.
