- Former Pres. George W. Bush spoke to first responders atop the pile at Ground Zero three days after Sept. 11, 2001.
"I can hear you, the rest of the world hears you, and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon," he said. Responding to the president's words, some rescue workers chanted, "USA, USA!"

This was the last moment in history the country was truely united.
Unfortunately it was based on lies and greed. To the victims of 9/11 both foreign and domestic RIP.
Nah 1860s we’re the best
@@PHXNKVHXLIC Yes but I just mean being united. Not most united. This marks the last time we were in my view.
@@tibodeclercq2131 I was just trolling, the nation has never been “united”. Racism and discrimination has been around since 1760’s in the US. From slavery to womens rights to treatment of Native Americans, to Civil Rights Movement to LA riots/general police racism, discrimination towards immigrants (legal or not) and it will never ever go away because that’s just part of humanity.
@@PHXNKVHXLIC it never will anywhere in the world. But bush had a 90+% approval rating after 9/11. Not that Bush was a great president, he wasn't, but this shows that many across different backgrounds stood after a cause. Something we barely see today.
Unless some aliens would attack us then maybe we would be more united.
Rest in Peace, Firefighter Bob Beckwith. 🕊️
"I can hear you" was the best!!!!!
GWB was actually VERY good at off the cuff unscripted speaking. He was horrible at pre-prepared speeches which is where is reputation of being an idiot come from. He did great in debates on 2000 because it was off the cuff. When he delivered addresses from the oval office is was damn near cringe because he was reading to us.
@@PavewayJDAM Well he couldn't make it to the top unless he was able to sell a Eskimo a refrigerator in the dead of winter......
For all his faults Bush Jr had an uncanny ability to make people laugh in the face of horror. Too bad he didn't become a comedian, rather than a politician.

That “God bless America!” from that guy in the crowd was passionate.

I won't ever forget how united this country was after that. You couldn't drive anywhere for days without seeing an American flag everywhere you went. People would break out into spontaneous USA chants and sing the National Anthem.
Wish we could have that again (without a tragedy)
It was really amazing to see! I was young. But I’ll never forget this time. We were all together for a moment.
All middle eastern people immediately put american flags on their vehicles lol. We were united for a few weeks then went back to being divided. Such is life.
@@robertl955 unfortunately yup
Then you let all of the Muslims in. And now here we are.
Say what you want about W Bush, but his choice of words after the "we can't hear you!" interjection was on point and on par to some of the greatest political statements in American history. I remember seeing this on TV 20+ years ago when I was in high school and it always stayed in my mind. Glad to revisit it here.

George W. Bush was a president who changed my mind too many times. When he was elected president I was enthusiastic, a few days after September 11th I felt he was a very close President, the whole United States of America joined him, then as the years went by it was a bit of a disappointment. I always believe that his could have been a better presidency.
He was not a good president but he was incredibly earnest and that goes a long way.
He was warned several times that 9/11 was coming and did nothing. 2 trillion dollars gone the day before 9/11? And the accounting department getting destroyed at the Pentagon? Interesting
I always admired the way he conducted himself on 9/11.
RIP Mr. Bob Beckwith!🫡🙏🇺🇸
In prayer we hear you
Chills baby chills...W really said what we needed to hear that day..we were heartbroken, stunned, devastated, shocked, hurt and speaking for myself LIVID , BEYOND ANGRY...when the President said "hear ALL OF US soon" the country said it WITH HIM.
As a very patriotic person swing the president show light during a dawn gives me the goosebumps
Dammit George, you were on a roll until you messed up and invaded Iraq.
That was the point
There are any number of criticisms one can level against W., but not for this. This is what leadership looks like. One of his finest moments IMO.
Bush turning "I can't hear you" into a rallying cry was an absolutely genius moment of speech-giving. Dubya could be charming if he wanted.
This was the best heckler counter moment in the history of speeches. It was almost like a divine intervention so W can make that powerful statement.
@@kzrsosa That moment with Obama responding to the heckler with "I wanna hear from you" and then playing the move of "and we've got free speech in this country" was pretty up there as well

Bush could connect with the people, I couldn't imagine what Biden or Trump would say. Probably something embarrassing.
Trump speaks like a layman. He says what people are thinking but outloud. Better than being a scripted fake.
Biden wouldn’t go there. He’d practice a speech with his aides for several days and then present it from somewhere else in the country and completely botch it. That’s honestly what I think would happen
younger Biden would be fine. Honestly personality wise young Biden is a lot like bush.

Man the face of that firefighter next to W is just heartbreaking. He’s trying to put on a good face to be strong for his men but his eyes say it all. The combination of heartbreak from losing so many close friends and the horror from what he likely saw at ground zero/the day of I cannot imagine.
I was there when I was 3 years old, I could remember my mom being near the ruins where Bush is talking in the video.
Rest in peace to all workers there and also to my dad that lost his life inside the world trade center 2
I’m so sorry. God bless your father. He is in heaven now.
I am so sorry for your lost, God bless your father and those who died on that day. They will never be forgotten. God bless America.
Born in 2004, I obviously have no recollection of any of this.
Still, it is interesting to see how well George W. Bush was able to comfort and unite the nation following this tragedy. Had he made better decisions...like not invading Iraq in 2003 for no reason...had he better handled Hurricane Katrina...had he kept the economy from going into a massive recession in 2008...he truly could've been one of the best Presidents.
He started of so strong and lost it all over his eight years, it's genuinely really disappointing.
And I say this all as a Democrat...at the very least, I can say George W. Bush was earnest. Even if I don't like what he did, I can at least respect him as a person.
Can't blame Iraq all on Bush. Unfortunately he was getting the wrong intel. They were telling him Saddam was building WMDs but that turned out to be incorrect. Not saying Saddam was an innocent leader but President Bush was not given all the facts.
Also, Hillary Clinton voted to support the invasion, and he could not have done it without the approval of Congress anyway. There was just enough blame to go around to everyone, but it's easy to blame it all on Bush.
In fairness, hindsight it usually 20, 20, and this was a national tragedy. If we could allow our response to september 11, 2001 to instuct our sensibilities in the future it might serve as a deterrent to an incoherent rush to war. Bless the victims. May god bless america.
? Rush? We were already at war. On the prosecution of the war from that point, I agree it didn't make sense how they decided they were going to try to Americanize Baghdad and Kabul though, yes, I would agree with that.
@@naysayer1238 We should have waited a year before we launched multiple attacks on multiple fronts. We had the world behind us, if bush would have toured the world visiting all our allies gaining more support the war on terrorism would be over. I was watching an old documentary of veterans saying what they would have done different in hindsight. All of them said they would have waited to launch. Anyway no point in dwelling on it, we did what we did.
Another great hero like Rudolph.
I’ll never forget where I was when he made this speech. Everyone in the neighborhood and my hometown was talking about this every where ya went. Probably the last time America was truly united.

It’s early dawn in the desert. The sky is starting to glow with light but the sun is still yet to rise. You’re standing there, looking at an ordinary desert bush. It's ironic that it took such tragedy to truly unite a nation. This speech is raw, the footage is amateur, yet it remains one of the most powerful speeches ever delivered by a U.S president. America was a rockstar in the 2000's. Sadly, for whatever reasons, it has lost itself and is now a country more divided than ever before. God bless America.
