I own a 1999 version of this guitar. This without a doubt is the best guitar I've ever played on. Stays in tune, great for bending, beefy single coil pickups and an overall tone monster. I love this Stratocaster
To answer any questions about the sound here, there are no effects or pedals used in this demo. This is the sound of the guitar plugged directly into a PRS Dallas 4x10.
We're you running through a drive channel/had the gain on max or is this just the nature of the pickups. Also What were the amp settings for this video ?
Man, that sound is superb!! I think you guys do a terrific job to recreate the proper sound for the guitar you're demoing. The John Mayer strat sounded like JM, this sounds like Stevie etc... They say one can't just pick up the same gear as an artist and sound exactly like him, but this is pretty fucking close! :)
PRS Custom Audio Design Dallas 4x10 w/ Derek Trucks mods. Not sure the exact settings but the treble and mids are cranked and the bright switch is on. Gain is set fairly high. Thanks for watching!
Hey man, Thanks so much for your kind words. These Strats really are killer. It's so much fun to grab a guitar built for such tone, and see what else you can do with it. Of course, it nails the Stevie tone without a problem. Be sure that you're signed up for our $500 monthly giveaway...just go to musicstorelive.com/giveaway. Super easy. Be well, rock on! -Zach
Thanks for the tip, I've already signed up! These really are killer Strats, I'd love to get my hands on one of them, gonna keep on day dreaming :) Rock on man! Keep these tight videos coming! Francisco
I got me one of these in my opinion the best strat out there for texas style blues but i love using it also for hendrix stuff sounds fantastic im never selling it.
My Brother John Has That Fender SRV Strat!! That Is One Great & Awesome Sounding & Playing Strat!! Big Thumbs Up!! - Big Will / The Super Blues Universe
I agree with you and the others too, I played one of these at GC before I ended up buying my AM Fender Deluxe Strat like 14 years ago or so. The guitar in this video does sound very brittle and thin on here. The one I played in real life was full and thick and sounded much better than my Roadhouse Strat with Texas Specials. That said, I have a SRV replica, made in China... I know, I know.... but anyway the replica sounds more like the real number one then the real Fender SRV and the Roadhouse with Texas Specials. The reason being that the Replica SRV from China has a nice percussive sound to it when you mute with your left hand when playing and it is very responsive to hammer on's, pull offs, and slides. It almost has the same playing/sound characteristics of a humbucker pickup but as a single coil. Even unplugged though it still has the same characterstics so it's something with the way that guitar is made. It might be that it's a relic guitar so the wood is not restricted by the paint and the same with the neck. I was so impressed with it, I bought another one for a friend and to my amazement it sounded very similar to mine and possibly even better than mine.
Aabsolutely! It IS miles away from Srv tone... which IS Warmer and creamy and better. I can get ThE video sound with a mexican Fender, my little Yamaha thr 10w of 220€ And only a Boss compressor. ThE remaining "30%" tone left IS what everybody IS always looking for
AxDxM True, SRV mainly played with the amp full open. I think the PRS amp just isn't coping well with the volume open and crashes. I didn't know SRV had a 12" radius on his strat
Your wrong all day that’s Stevie’s tone, he’s playing to hard, Stevie would leave all the amps cranked and would use his famous touch to control the clean and volume so he could go from dirty to clean at will.
I tried both and I liked the JM better. It has a better tone for my taste, those Big Dipper pickups are something else. I also prefer the JM's neck, it felt more comfortable while playing.
I have Texas Special pickups, been sitting in my desk for about 4 years now. I never felt like my plebeian Mexican Strat was worthy enough for them. This video makes me want to put them in though.
+Ryan Vela Very cool Ryan. It's true, the SRV Strat is an amazing axe, and Bob definitely did a great job showing what it can do in this video. Give us a shout at the store tomorrow and we'll hook you up with a deal on one! We're at 855.592.6007 or info@musicstorelive.com. Thanks for watching our videos Ryan. Cheers, -Ben
I love how he said a little bit bigger than a modern c. I’ve played both that guitar and my cousin has a 59 custom shop relic strat and truthfully the srv model is still to this day the beefiest neck I’ve ever played. To say like a baseball bat wouldn’t quite cut it lol
bought one when they first came out.bridge position has that unique srv growl. neck pickup on the other hand had a nasty thin piercing sound. lefty trem bar looks goofy but is genius.while playing , just hook it with your pinky and straight into the palm, no having to reach down to grab it, magic.pick guard sucks. huge neck .
I havn't heard any guitar yet that was demo'd on a PRS amp that sounded good.PRS makes a damn fine guitar but either his amps lack that wow factor or the people using them cant adjust them for shit.
I've got this guitar it's plain awesome, to give some constructive feedback the distortion for the demo is to strong though, you hear how unique the guitar is on the clean tone. You may want to demo the guitar next time clean thats what it sold it for me. Adding distortion is easy, to have a sick clean sound is not that easy though.
Using a tube screamer? or is that straight out of the Amp (assume some jumped up preamp settings) Just curious regarding the Texas Specials output, that sounds wicked!
I'm an acoustic player who loves Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton's music. I want to be able to get closer to their sound and I know that it would have to be an electric, of course. Would a Semi-Hollow Body ever give a Strat-like sound like this, or should I just get a Strat outright?
Hey Jeese, Semi hollow body guitars are capable of getting some pretty amazing tones, and really are quite versatile guitars. That being said, if you're truly after the tones of SRV and Clapton (though keep in mind the Clapton spent a fair amount of time on a hollow body guitar, especially early on), I would suggest that you stick with a Strat. They're killer guitars, and there are a lot of reasons that they haven't changed hardly at all since their introduction in 1954. With a good amp, you'll be able to nail dozens of tones of your heroes, which is always a great playing inspiration as far as I'm concerned. We have a pretty serious selection of guitars here, and all of our sales guys are players who really have a great handle on setting you up with the right guitar. Feel free to give a ring over to our sales department at (855) 790-8490, and those guys will be happy to give you some more pointers, and a great deal too. Hope this helps, my friend...good luck! All the best, Zach
from personnal experience, i've been looking at different guitars with different woods, pickups, string gauges looking for a sound like SRV's, you could get a tone like this with a guitar that has a solid, thick neck, rosewood bridge or something as hard and brightsounding as rosewood. And a single coil pick set up like this one (for exemple fender tex-mex or texas special pick ups). So to sum up, you would need the right wood, fender pick ups (they cost 100 dolars approx), big strings, i'd say at least 0,11 or 0,12 (this sound comes from 0,13) and a clean booster pedal or a tube screamer. You can try and see if you can setup a hollow body like this. Or it would be easier if you get a standart american strat, with rosewood fretboard and change the string and pickups. But the sound itself is mostly from the elements i listed above. but dont forget the tube screamer or clean booster, no overdrive
Saved & saved and the SRV strat was the first axe I ever bought. Beautiful piece, but I hated every minute of it! Lol I know that sounds crazy, but its really about preference. I have 83 American strat that I play over the SRV any day!
@De Rz - Not everybody buys an SRV strat just because they need to sound like him. Alot of people buy these to either just collect them or play them at home FOR FUN and to have an imagination. I don't see what is so wrong with being an SRV fan and wanting to play a guitar like his. I have an Eric Clapton strat and I don't suppose you can give me shit for owning one because I like his sound and that I love the guitar. I didn't buy it because I needed to sound like Clapton, I bought it because (even though I like his sound too) because it is a sweet guitar to have fun jamming with FOR FUN. I find your comment to be really rude. Plus, you'll find that even famous musicians use other artist's signature guitars for recording in studios and doing live shows. So why don't you go give them shit too and come back and tell me how it went.
+Nate Cassou Well, Stevie played through Marshalls, for the most part. I have played one of these through an older twin with an Ibanez tube screamer, like Stevie used, and it is still a pretty spot on sound. You have to have the amp well cranked up to get the sound, as you would imagine. The twin is not a great at home amp haha.
Tyler Gavin Depends on what you like for sound. Stevie cranked the Twins in both small clubs and large venues for most of his songs. with the TS for some edge. Voodoo Child I know he used a Marshall and he also used Dumble amps. Best way to go IMO is buying a late 60's early 70's Pro Reverb and "black-facing" the circuit.
Hmm could I buy that pickguard somewhere and put it on my 60s classic vibe strat with the 3 tone burst and rosewood fretboard? Could look like a budget SRV strat
Great playing as usual, but still haven't heard anybody be able to accurately reproduce Stevie's tone since he died. Must be his hands and those .013s he was playing.
Slap your strat on the neck pickup with high gain distortion and anything higher than 10 gauge and you've got that SRV tone to an extent. Gotta know how to play though.
Having once owned an SRV and a MIM strat with Texas Specials I have to say you could not be more wrong lol yes you have to know Stevie’s songs and know how to work your hands but this strat definitely sounds like Stevie right when you plug it in. It is the best signature strat Fender has put out imo, even better than the Eric Johnson strat...haven’t played the Rory strat tho
Seemed more like shredding, but that a different approach to blues like walter trout great blues player. I wish they did nitrocellulose on the finish it is supposed to be a SRV.
Oh man I don't know im stuck . this or a deluxe. live the deluxe hate the noisless pups . live the specials and the gold hardware and lefty trem. wonder what kinda pots they use . hate the srv in Graves pickguard. it's bad enough they put those damn signeture on the headstock. I absolutely love the tone of that guitar though
All that said, yes you can buy a Mexican Strat... Hell they even sell them with the Texas Specials already in em.... It'll sound similar but the feel and playability will be totally different... Oh forgot to mention that the fret board is made from Pau Ferro, not Rosewood... Like I said... Similar but in no ways the same!
what kind of distortion are you uisng? I mean is the guitar connected directly to the amp or it haves another effects like pedals and some things like that?
A properly set up trem should stay in tune just fine for heavy vibrato. That's what they're designed to do. It won't stay in tune for huge dive-bomb Van Halen stuff without a locking nut, but for SRV stuff, I mean - Stevie himself, Jimi Hendrix, etc used '60s Strats too.
+Danielle Muscato when I'm bored on my strat I bend it until it's in A then let go and it's still in perfect tune. So I guess it just depends on strings and how well it's set up
+marcos gama well if you want to get close to srv's tone, a vox amp won't be helping you. Just remember it's all in the finger. You can have all the expensive vintage gear, and still don't sound like him.
C'est tout à fait que j'attendais venant d'une SRV. N'en déplaise à tous ceux qui critiquent le son de ce super gratteux notamment sur d'autre videos.. Par contre faut-il avoir cette guitare pour avoir le son SRV? non
It has too much twang in the tone for me. But for overall tone whether it be for playing lead or rhythm, you can't beat a strat. You have to own atleast one.
I have had an SRV strat for my whole life. By far the best sounding guitar I've owned. It's a tone monster.
I watch this video sometimes just to listen to how good his fucking tone is
Bob, the guy has the looks and musical badassery of a long lost Allman Brother.
+primeDecomposition Or Jesus returned and was like "Nah instead of a second coming, this guitar shit looks pretty chill"
Nice reply bro. Respect
I own a 1999 version of this guitar. This without a doubt is the best guitar I've ever played on. Stays in tune, great for bending, beefy single coil pickups and an overall tone monster. I love this Stratocaster

is that amp available for purchase on the website??
I don't know bro
We're you running through a drive channel/had the gain on max or is this just the nature of the pickups. Also What were the amp settings for this video ?
OMG, what a way NOT to demonstrate it's really beautiful tones.
what the hell are you on about??

PRS Custom Audio Design Dallas 4x10 w/ Derek Trucks mods. Not sure the exact settings but the treble and mids are cranked and the bright switch is on. Gain is set fairly high. Thanks for watching!
Bob kills it every time. Is this guy playing professionally as well?
god dang, great playing and kick ass tone! This is my dream Stratocaster! Great review man, solid playing! :)

My Brother John Has That Fender SRV Strat!! That Is One Great & Awesome Sounding & Playing Strat!! Big Thumbs Up!!
- Big Will / The Super Blues Universe
The sunburst, tortoise shell pickguard, and the gold hardware look amazing all on one guitar together
i cant believe this is with no pedals. im about to buy one in the next couple days. What a kickass demo dude
To me, that tone sounds very brittle, thin and shrill. SRV had a much warmer bigger sound.
Bigger amps and bigger strings, also professional sound engineers to mic up and record the guitar amps on stage.
It’s the amp not the guitar
I agree with you and the others too, I played one of these at GC before I ended up buying my AM Fender Deluxe Strat like 14 years ago or so. Mmm 13 Gauge and be SRV?
Mud on the low-end and bite on the single notes all at once! Gnarly tone.
Thanks for the review, but the tone was way too dirty. SRV was much cleaner on most of the songs you demoed. Love to hear how it really sounds.
AxDxM True, SRV mainly played with the amp full open. I think the PRS amp just isn't coping well with the volume open and crashes. I didn't know SRV had a 12" radius on his strat
Well, you're right. Two diff. players two different tones.
Your wrong all day that’s Stevie’s tone, he’s playing to hard, Stevie would leave all the amps cranked and would use his famous touch to control the clean and volume so he could go from dirty to clean at will.
Bought a 2000 on eBay about 6 or so years ago. Still my number 1
Love that front pickup so throaty great sound..nice job
Should play it through a Fender amp. SRV didn't use a PRS amp, and that's just not a way to showcase Fender guitars.
Stevie played though a marshall and dumble.
You sir are a fantastic player. I need to practise...
dude you convinced me to buy one.

What is Bob up to nowadays? I remember enjoying his demos and playing style ✌️
SRV didn't have texas special pickups.. he had stock 59' pickups.
Those chops doe!! Also I would really love one of these with the Clapton boost circuit! :) :)
i just found one on facebook marketplace for $225....... IM PRAYING THE DUDE STILL HAS IT
DAMN you are good🎶 I knew the SRV purchase was a good idea.. but I've clearly got my work cut out for me
Bought one out of the first run the first year. Great guitar.
I love how he said a little bit bigger than a modern c. I’ve played both that guitar and my cousin has a 59 custom shop relic strat and truthfully the srv model is still to this day the beefiest neck I’ve ever played. To say like a baseball bat wouldn’t quite cut it lol
Really? I have yet to hold one. I know everyone says Stevie had big hands, but damn...
I also love the 12" radius. Much better for those SRV bends!
That last solo was great.
bought one when they first came out.bridge position has that unique srv growl. neck pickup on the other hand had a nasty thin piercing sound. lefty trem bar looks goofy but is genius.while playing , just hook it with your pinky and straight into the palm, no having to reach down to grab it, magic.pick guard sucks. huge neck .
I couldn't take it anymore, I just ordered one ; )
Will follow you soon!!
I havn't heard any guitar yet that was demo'd on a PRS amp that sounded good.PRS makes a damn fine guitar but either his amps lack that wow factor or the people using them cant adjust them for shit.
PRS Amps are Terrible. He is a Great Player but Needs a Fender Amp for " That Tone "
VanderVape i agree

I don't like howit sounds, but in terms of how it feels to play, this is possibly the greatest guitar in the world.
WOW!! Great tone and playing.
Using a tube screamer? or is that straight out of the Amp (assume some jumped up preamp settings)
Just curious regarding the Texas Specials output, that sounds wicked!
great job buddy as always , mind telling me what your pickup height is ? thank you

I got the Clapton tone with my USA fender guitar a fender bass amp and a $30 digitech eBay pedal with the right settings.
I've been searching long for this video....
Looks perfect and sounds perfect for my taste! How low is the pickup height upon first look?
SRV Strat the best guitar in the world. I just baught one it's awesome can't put it down
Cool sound and nice Guitar... Who was SRV I've never heard of him..?
Forget the PRS! Pay attention to that guy's incredible playing!

That leftie trem is something else.
Love that tone
wish he was playing through a fender amp..

Yeah, when selling a fender. Use a fender amp. At least we regular folk can get access to them.
pls carefully and completely compare the bridges:
righty & lefty trem on a right handed guitar.
Hmm could I buy that pickguard somewhere and put it on my 60s classic vibe strat with the 3 tone burst and rosewood fretboard? Could look like a budget SRV strat
like the sound.and tremolo in my mind is best placed to.
Is it black red yellow or black brown yellow sunburst
Killer sounding strat!
I never understood why they used pao ferro instead of rosewood.
i love your tone! that's my dream tone.what drive do you use? ts9? od808?
Good demo, THANKS!
Great playing as usual, but still haven't heard anybody be able to accurately reproduce Stevie's tone since he died. Must be his hands and those .013s he was playing.
look up Tommy katona
+Patrick Dolan Comes pretty close but still not quite as clean as Stevie
+Brian Fulda agreed.
Any Strat will do as long as you install those pups
False
+Ashton Young Any Strat with any pickups will do. It comes from your hands.
Slap your strat on the neck pickup with high gain distortion and anything higher than 10 gauge and you've got that SRV tone to an extent. Gotta know how to play though.
Again, it comes from your hands. String gauge has nothing to do with it, and Stevie never had a high gain tone. He cranked Fender amps.
Sounds awesome
Seemed more like shredding, but that a different approach to blues like walter trout great blues player. I wish they did nitrocellulose on the finish it is supposed to be a SRV.
Oh man I don't know im stuck . this or a deluxe. live the deluxe hate the noisless pups . live the specials and the gold hardware and lefty trem. wonder what kinda pots they use . hate the srv in Graves pickguard. it's bad enough they put those damn signeture on the headstock. I absolutely love the tone of that guitar though
Nice playing!
Awesome playing...
i like it allot . and the guy's style of playing.
what kind of distortion are you uisng? I mean is the guitar connected directly to the amp or it haves another effects like pedals and some things like that?
I'm a big fan of SRV
Bottom line: SRV pick guard will not make you sound like SRV. Thanks for the review.
Man just bought one and can't figure out this whammy bar. It doesn't seem to move
Texas special pups!hell yea!!!
this is beautiful!
Wow! That one really sounded a bit like Nr. one!
How does it stay in tune that well when he uses the tremolo like that?
A properly set up trem should stay in tune just fine for heavy vibrato. That's what they're designed to do. It won't stay in tune for huge dive-bomb Van Halen stuff without a locking nut, but for SRV stuff, I mean - Stevie himself, Jimi Hendrix, etc used '60s Strats too.
+Danielle Muscato Very true. Thanks :)
+Danielle Muscato when I'm bored on my strat I bend it until it's in A then let go and it's still in perfect tune. So I guess it just depends on strings and how well it's set up
Ciao Che marca di corde utilizzi ?.. e che salatura 10/46 ?.. 🙏 Grazie per la risposta !..
if i plug the guitar in a VoxAC30c2 will sound the same? or i'll still need some pedals for it ?
+marcos gama well if you want to get close to srv's tone, a vox amp won't be helping you.
Just remember it's all in the finger. You can have all the expensive vintage gear, and still don't sound like him.
95' or 96' Tex Mex 50th Anniversary MIM Strat is just as good and probably has the same parts.
I want Tex Specials now
How do you palm mute with the trem on?
No more available for sale?
Do these pickups work with fuzz as good as with od?
dude you rock!
How would you compare SRV with John mayer?
I'm sold. Can you get me one Lefty? I'm dead serious.
Lenny was play with fender 54 mic
Which PRS Amp is that, and what EQ did you have on?
Awesome!
SRV use LEFTY TREMOLO for RIGHTY GUITAR.
Interesting
C'est tout à fait que j'attendais venant d'une SRV. N'en déplaise à tous ceux qui critiquent le son de ce super gratteux notamment sur d'autre videos.. Par contre faut-il avoir cette guitare pour avoir le son SRV? non
AMAAAAAAAAAAZING TONES
What were your gauge strings on this one?
the bridge must be golden
Tube screamer up a little too high .
How do you get the hollow sound?
It has too much twang in the tone for me. But for overall tone whether it be for playing lead or rhythm, you can't beat a strat. You have to own atleast one.
i wonder if it comes with 13s on it
Michael Kosakowski It doesn't :(
According to Fender's website it comes with 0.10s
William Nordberg :(
