- Steve Vai's Hydra NFT didn't really work out. I believe that this is a sign that this trend will only continue with others who offer little to no utility. Will Fender and Gibsons projects fall to a simular fate?

Steve's project might have failed, but I can tell you from first-hand experience Gibson's NFT's are the real deal.
Just last week my Gibson NFT cracked right at the headstock. I'm still looking for a virtual luthier to do a proper repair.
Lol! Great comment. I’m invested in crypto but the whole nft thing is horse shit as far as I’m concerned. Best of luck finding that luthier 🤣🤣👏👍

You could not pay people to take that monstrosity.

This was easy to predict. It's taken nearly 30 years for guitarists to begrudgingly accept digital modelling and that actually works. A incorporeal magic token had no chance.

@@Mr.Batsu12 They're right, NFTs are used as scams. Crypto gambling sht
@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess Saying NFTs are horrible because people use them for horrible things is like in the 80s saying the music CD is horrible because bad music was put onto CD. Or that Bluray is bad because bad movies are put on Bluray discs. The technology of NFTs are amazing but most people just know of the crap they are used for. If you think "NFTs are scams" then you are just showing how ignorant you are.
@@Mr.Batsu12 Well I said they're being used that way, not that they're that way in its essence.
NFTs are being used for crypto scams, ponzi schemes and rug pulls. Just the fact that crypto is still the wild west and can't be regulated against frauds and scams currently, it's a given. That undoubtedly has damaged the idea of NFTs in many people's eyes
@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess Oh, my bad. I thought you were agreeing with people who don't know what an NFT was but just associate them with scams. Yes, it's a shame NFTs are primarily being used this way. It's put a big stain on a useful technology.
I never understood the point of an NFT. It’s just a picture of something really
it's not even the picture in most cases, but a link to the image hosted elsewhere that could be taken down in the future.
* clears throat * Well actually-
I believe the main point was to manufacture a use case for ETH.
The point of nfts are to sucker someone into buying them. If you sell an nft = great business move! If you buy an nft = LOL DUMBASS.
Do you think famous paintings are worth hundreds if millions? Do you think Jimi Hendrix's guitar was worth millions? Nope. We have people that are too rich to know what to do with their money so they inflate their ego by inflating the prices on things that shouldn't have any, at all.
As a 3d artist friends have asked me why I haven't created NFT's, to which I usually respond with "because I'm not a conman".
NFT does have actual legitimate use, but to buy and sell jpgs? Nah, that's a giant waste.
It's more than that. You can build yourself as an artist with nfts having a bunch of stipulations on those nfts. You can be a conman...but you can be a legit business man. I could buy an nft from you that gives me a percentage on something you do.and if I sell it, you get a percentage everytime it's sold. It's a utility. You could build your own studio off of nfts.

The JEM you showed is the Premium line. Ibanez somewhat recently discontinued the Japan JEM and they now sell for around $2500-3000
This screams to me that most of the guitar-oriented world has little to no understanding of what NFTs are lol. They want to seem relevant and hip so they take a chance on a new business idea, not having the knowledge to do a proper risk analysis. I was a little disappointed when I saw Vai do the NFT thing, though I never thought it was malicious. Just a boomer move...
Yeah because guitar world and guitarists are famous for their open minds, and how quickly they embrace new technologies
If "boomer" refers to "baby boomer", I don't think it's appropriate here. They're less likely to be involved in tech crap like this. Just my take but I could be wrong. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am.

I don’t think the ignorance is just with the guitar community. Social media marketing is such a huge business now that there are teams of people across multiple industries scouring the internet for the latest fad to jump on. There’s very little oversight now , I can imagine 20 years ago someone in Steve’s team would have had to veto this , but social media is still seen as a dark art in marketing terms so they probably agreed as you said : with little to no understanding.
Great video! I'm amused to see how much the tide has turned against NFT's. Sony recently released "digital collectables" associated with Playstation games and went to great lengths to explain that they are not NFT's, you can't trade them, and they don't use blockchain technology.

One Vai project that never came to fruition was the whole "Real Illusions" story; that album is Part 1 and there were supposed to be multiple albums. If you partook in the EVO Experience on that tour, Steve gathered all of the participants in front of a camera and had everyone say a single word. At the show I attended, Columbus OH, the word was, 'We.' The idea was to compile all of the words said by all of the EVO Experience attendees throughout the tour and that would be a verse or something to a song that was to be the finale of the whole Real Illusions story. That never came to be as that was back in '05. Cool idea, shame it never materialized...yet at least.
i was VERY stoked on Real Illusions. that album didn't leave my cd changer for like 2 yrs straight. i remember hearing about the EVO 'word'(s) and it made me REALLY need the follow up. instead. SEVEN YRS LATER. we got 'The Story of Light'. which is rad too but "Real Illusions: Reflections" i can STILL put on and run it front to back without skipping a song.
Because those evo experience are too expensive lol
Cool story.
I remember this, the gig I was at the word was here.

oddly fascinating bit of music... can't say i'll listen to it twice, though
The "legitimate uses" have no extra utility beyond a secure encrypted password in the first place though, it's quite literally just designed for market speculation (read: ponzi schemes) and drawing orders of magnitude more electricity.
The only reason you'd want your password (or other like, "identifying code") to be stored on a blockchain instead of some centralized server is when you don't trust the provider of said server... which presumably you do if you're buying a guitar from them. And on the blockchain you're instead trusting every single little finger in the pie to not straight up steal or delete your stuff as it gets passed along
I guess the guitar community still have some sense to understand that NFT's were created for people who don't know what to do with the extra money they have. For us, that extra $$ is obviously going to guitars🎸
I’m still Subbed. Thanks for checking in though.
Your delivery is very succinct. Your dry humor on this one is outrageous. And your attention to detail ... you should have been a lawyer. It's not too late, why not? You could make a video on it. :-)
Don't come down on Steve this was most likely in Steve's contract with Ibanez as a part of the release of the Hydra. I've met Steve several times he doesn't come across as someone trying to rip his fans off, he probably doesn't care about the NFT either.
No, I'll come down on Steve for this. He's at a level in his career that he sets terms of contracts, he doesn't get bulldozed by corporate lawyers. Ibanez isn't pushing contract terms on him without his consent. At the end of the day, Steve is in charge of his business. Same with Bonamassa and all the tat he sells.

I want to go back in time before nfts and crypto were a thing. This shit and crypto bros are so annoying.
Hey KDH , is it true that all modern Gibsons have a RFID tag under the fretboard? I heard it's for internal use and it's somewhere under the 1st to the 3rd fret of the guitars. 😃Cheers
Trogly has some knowledge pertaining to Norlin era Les Pauls. He's pretty knowledgable in general when it comes to Gibson's but the bulk of his knowledge is on Les Pauls from the 70's through to present day. Their are folk who are far more knowledgable but Austin knows his stuff. It's just a shame he's become less humble as times gone by. It's great to see someone do well but this guy won't answer questions in his comments on youtube but will if you pay him via his website. It's a shame these chips develop as time goes by and channels grow.
I like his channel and what he does, but yeah sometimes it feels like he forgets who his core audience is. When he says stuff like "Gibson should've charged more" and "It's *only* 6k".

It's a solution to a problem that mostly doesn't exist or no one cares about. 😂
I'm a huge Steve Vai fan, but the world of NFTs is one that I refuse to get involved with. I'm kind of surprised and let down that Steve Vai got involved in the NFT game. I mean I can get behind Gibson including NFTs with their guitars and used in legitimate ways that are not a money grab, but it would be even better if Gibson employees could tell the differences between their own guitars and a cheap Chinese knock off, which speaks wonders towards their actual quality control issue.

I got a Gibson les Paul and when someone stamped the serial number on, the last couple of letters are only just visible. The last one is only visible at certain angles. Took ages to find a guitar with the top I wanted. Now if it had nft instead as a verification, with photos ect, that could be something a little more easily identifiable as no 2 tops are the same.
Great video, but the technology behind NFTs doesn't have uses. Do a RUclips search for "The Trouble with NFTs." An immutable ledger that requires you to burn the equivalent of 10 gas stations to add an entry has a catastrophic design flaw.
That’s a good point, especially for something on the Etherium blockchain. Eth in general really isn’t great, gas fees etc.
However there are alternatives that have significantly less environmental impact which could make the tech make sense.
@@KDH there is literally no application for blockchain tech. It's a completely useless pyramid scheme. Go and watch munecat's video about crypto.

High GAS fees isn't a design flaw because it wasn't part of the original design of NFTs. High GAS fees are happening because of the current environment of cryptocurrencies. These can and will be fixed with time.
Just wanted to touch on that Fender video, it looks almost exactly like the graphics in Decentraland, which is a metaverse token where you can buy and sell digital land. So maybe Fender used that to build the “stratoverse” or whatever it’s called. Just speculating though.
I don’t see a future for NFTs in music as the concept isn’t clear for a lot of people.
I have an immense urge to buy a Silver Sky now.
You nailed this man. NFTs are essentially just a receipt. The NFT should be free with every guitar (or product) bought.

Oh man, for a moment you had me thinking it would be a sweet deal for me to go buy a new Jem 😅
2:47 Yeah about that, he wasn't the expert at that time, that he is now.
It's like auctioning off exclusive downloadable content for one person to have with immutable proof on the chosen chain. I guess at some point it might become useful for artists but it seems like selling futures for value of artists. Digital assets in this NFT form seem to be more about boosting scarcity value and less about providing income stream for less well heeled artists.
Thanks for clearing what an NFT is. Here I thought he was auctioning off the actual guitar!

What was the currency that was mentioned here? I'm not up to date with this crypto-currency stuff and didn't quite catch it.
Jordan Rudess was shilling them too. Haven't heard anything from him on that front for about 6 months now
I think there's a lot of applications of digital signatures and storing data on a blockchain for the music industry. You can QR code parts and make it easy to verify their authenticities and trace their origin. Using a merkle tree, you can effectively print verifiable genuineness labels on an entire production lot of guitar strings for a fraction of a cent. But yeah, selling a receipt for nothing for thousands of dollars is kinda dumb.
I wonder how much of the proceeds from the Vaibrant guitars (Which are like the old ESP pickguard guitars that look like a floating strat pickguard and a neck but with his JEM style fluro paintjobs) I know he wouldnt allow use of the name for nothing..
Soooooooo........if I bought this, I have a digital receipt for the video..........if I own the video, does that mean I can download it and upload it wherever I want and monetize it? In other words does it give me the copyright?
I personally don't even care about meaningful NFT utility. At best the benefits are marginal.
Fender just discovered second life 😂
Vai, Gibson etc. are late on the initial NFT craze, as it's already over.
It's alright if artists and companies experiment with NFTs a bit, to figure out decent use cases for this new technology. It'll take a few years for NFTs and what to do with them to mature.
The Stratoverse seems quite cool. Everything has to start somewhere. It appears to simply be a map for some VR platform.
steve is one person I'd give a buy on something like this until or unless it's a pattern. Knowing what he does and how he operates, it's not even unlikely that he'd be using NFTs to get funding to promote artists that don't get enough exposure.
Other possibility is people who make comments "you know, you should do an NFT - I'd bid on it". That - not related to NFTs only, but requesting anything, is usually followed by disappearance.
Just like people who say "you put a group buy together for this, I'm in dude. Count me in on 3 of them"
A couple of months later:
"yeah, I changed my mind, can you give me my deposit back?"
It's hard to manufacture a new collectibles market for adults. There are a lot of practical applications for NFTs, like you said. Sticking to those will actually attract interest, although the name "NFT" may be ruined.

NFTs have to be one of the stupidest ideas/concepts I've ever heard of in my 52 years on this planet.
I want to call NFTs a fad, but they've become something more... Insidious than that.
On paper, they seem perfect for artists to monetize their artwork instead of relying on institutions that could screw them over.
In practice, they come in three brands of shit:
Poorly designed, auto-generated art made by a soulless brand that doesn't have any interest in artistic integrity (Bored Apes in a nutshell).
Quick cash grab fads by celebrities wanting to make a quick buck.
Or the epitome of the diseased micro transaction mentality seen in the gaming industry.
Just another result of capitalism.

You make a great point about how NFTs could be used as certificates of authenticity for limited runs. Hadn’t thought about that. Great content as usual!
What is NFT?
Make stuff people want and do it better than they are expecting.
Imagine in the future that guitar nfts get so ridiculous that a signature name gets slapped on the title of a photo of a guitar
The crappy thing about NFTs is that they have so much potential. Bands issuing their own tickets via NFTs, on a public blockchain -- no scalping, no bots, no transfers. Ticketmaster would be out of business, if not for their exclusivity deals with venues :(
NFT's can and have been "faked" via theft by hacking. They are NOT bulletproof.
@@Boudica234 You’ve lost me. Faking something (fraud) is totally different than stealing it, which would be hacking. You can’t fake a transaction on the blockchain.
