      I'm 38 and I think BJJ is pointless, here's my case. I have a friend who became a BJJ black belt in his 20's, he is 5 foot 9 and has no athletic ability. I used to wrestle him in college and I destroyed him (I have no background in fighting or wrestling) When I found out he became a black belt I had no faith that he would be able to submit me or even get close because I'm so much stronger than him. I ended up having the change to "roll" with him at his house and without any training, he was unable to even achieve anything against me. I just kept holding him in positions and making him look stupid. I am 5 foot 6 and 10 pounds lighter than he is so my size has nothing to do with it. It made me lose respect for BJJ because if anyone can get a black belt and still have no chance against some untrained people, what is the point?

      @@jonadam5505that’s definitely not been my experience of starting recently! Sure if I could strike that might change it against some much smaller/weaker people. Go to a gym and grapple a few different people before you draw a final verdict. I’m no expert or bjj zealot btw - just a white belt who’s dabbled in a variety of martial arts over the years for fun and fitness.

    I’d say framing is the #1 principle to know and focus on. Knowing how to frame without pushing and therefor expending energy is like a cheat code. It’s great to know lots of submissions, escapes, and passing…but if you don’t know how and when to frame you will be too tired to perform any of these when rolling.

    • @kmg2947
      @kmg2947 Год назад +1

      frames rule. People tire themselves out trying to submit and get past them. Tires them out and keeps us fresh. They will make a mistake eventually. Then you attack. Ground them down.

    As a white belt, my first few months were spent just getting into positions and then trying to figure out where my limbs were, then trying to keep track of where their limbs were.
    I'm still a white belt, but I think it helped.
    But seriously bad coordination... Haha

    Thank you. Our fundamentals professor says all the time that he understands we feel that a lot of the drills, hip escapes, scissor sweeps, etc seem boring and repetitive, but like you said it's building a foundation that without it you will get smashed by higher ranks. I survived my first 7 minute roll with a brown belt who was massively strong and although he carried me, also challenged me and without some of the basics I wouldn't have made it all 7 mins. Fundamentals are everything.

    Part of the problem is that many gyms have changed the way they teach new practitioners. Instead of starting everybody from the beginning, with months if not a year or two of drilling the very basics, they have you jump in like it's the middle of an old time movie, and you figure it out as you go, picking up things piecemeal until it starts to come together. But that inevitably leaves gaps and voids. The new practitioner who is studious and usually a bit older can do some of their own research and augment what is taught at the gym, and then practice it while rolling or otherwise, but it simply isn't the same as having the first year or two dedicated to building the foundational understanding and muscle memory.
