Just a few comments on installing alignment pins. The most important prerequisite to drilling is making sure layout lines on adjoining pieces are absolutely sharp and accurate. Making sure that your dowel jig is aligned accurately and that the jig itself is accurate. Test your jig and drilling process on two sacrificial pieces of matched stock to confirm accuracy. After drilling, I like to use a countersink bit to create a slight chamfer allowing the pins to set in just a little bit deeper so I never have to worry about the possibility of pins protruding. I also place a very small amount of Epoxy adhesive into each hole so as never to fear that the hardware will pull out of the matched pieces of stock
