WOW!!!! PLEASE dissect more KISS songs. I'm a 55 year old somewhat intermediate guitarist and I absolutely love what I have discovered. You are pulling the curtain back from one of my ALL TIME favorite bands. ((if you could only have seen my bedroom in the 70's, wall to wall Kiss posters)) THANK YOU for this!
He said he was 55, are you dumb James? Try loving life and stop your stinkin thinkin. Are you a bully. I use to wax bullies in the late 70s when I loved KISS. Always will but I dont play em everyday. That makes them always exciting and brings back memories
I'm sure I'm not the first to point out that this isn't Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. It's Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer. Dude, at 10:13 Gene literally yells "Tommy!" Appreciate the deep dive into this great song. Like your PRS Guitar, too.
Ace was and still is a class of it's own. He invented that style of playing. Tommy Thayer is hired to mimic that and he does it well. Eric on the other hand is not a stand in for Peter Criss or even the late Eric Carr. Both Carr and Singer outperform Peter in every aspect. And I've seen em all play live.
Liked this to make him see the comment! It is common for non KISS ARMY to not know the current lineup! I think he needs to do something from the late 70's/early 80's. and it just erks me that he is not right with any of the musicians he mentions for the most part. Peter nor Ace are even involved with this so he is giving credit to the wrong people. And I also find It interesting he keeps saying "larger than life" which is the name of a song from the original crew!
I LOVE this video! He is such a genuine nice guy and a good story teller. I'm a huge KISS fan and the fact that he doesn't know this isn't actually Peter and Ace doesn't even bother me lol
yes it is I'm a KISS fan from 75 and on my 4 walls and ceiling were covered in their posters and now I have a cherry burst Gibson les paul standard a nod to Ace I smoke(weed) not my pick ups 😳 lol
That was an excellent job of pointing that out without being a jerk about it. I just see it as giving Peter and Ace credit for their contributions to the original recordings of the song. And Frankly, I’m not 100% sure that’s Gene.
I’ve seen KISS more times than I can count. Best time was standing behind Gene’s stacks with his bass tech during the Hot in the Shade show. Until you’ve been where the working guys hang out during a concert, you really can’t appreciate just how much work goes into the best shows. 🤘😎🤘
Mike, Love your content. I would love to see chicago 25 or 6 to 4 live tanglewood. The full live concert is incredible. Terry Kath is brilliant and deserves some love. 🤙. Now i will sit back and watch this video!
I’ve been a Kiss fan most of my life and kind of a “casual subscriber” for about a year now.. I think it’s pretty cool that someone who’s as big on theory as you is doing a Kiss song. 👍🏼 lol
Eric Singer is playing with KISS. Peter hasn't been in the band in 20 years and never played as well as Singer. Look Singer up. He's been in some great bands.
I’ve been a kiss fan since I was a kid, I’m 58 now. I have an epi les Paul and I try to learn some of my favorite kiss songs. Can you do more kiss please!
Been a Kiss fan from the beginning. Had the privilege of opening for them in 2010. The band crew & manager were phenomenal. Took care of our gear gave us a sound check even though they were having some technical problems fed us had our own dressing room etc. much respect to them. Opened for much lesser bands & were treated like shit.
As a huge KISS fan, I love watching videos like this. You should add more KISS songs reactions to your videos! ... I would love to watch you doing a cover of this song soon!!
Ive been seeing KISS shows since 1975. In all that time there was Never a disappointing show. Always entertaining and always engaging. When you left it stayed with you for days after. Bombastic, overwhelming. Pick your choice... My bedroom was top to bottom KISS for 10 years until I finally moved on and put it all in boxes and threw it in the closet. Im also glad I backI still have all my KISS stuff from my childhood and it takes me back instantly.
Wow, great to see you dissecting Kiss! I've listened to them since I was 5, in 1987. I only had my brother's Lick it up until I bought Revenge when it came out. For some reason the band seems to be completely ignored online nowadays. I fail to see why... It's a massive band which has influenced thousands of famous musicians, that constantly talk about them as an influence.
Loved Ace's lingers because he always pointed to the amps for the feedback. Ace is the one that created the solo for this. Tommy though very good does his own rendition of it.
Awesome review. Kiss Rock and Roll ALL Overs LP was the very first album that I ever purchased at Tower Records. I was maybe 10 or 11 years old. Played that album no stop. I still have it with the accompanying stickers and KISS Army swag that came with it🤘🤘
Just saw KISS here in Sydney in August. The show was very similar to 2013. Eric Singer’s drums I think are underrated. I definitely underrated them before now. But yes, the ‘show’ was awesome.
I love your enthusiasm for the music and performance and keeping it all positive as it should be. Do another and make sure you get the names correct (I'm sure you feel bad about it) and it'll be all good. Go right back to the start, maybe something in black and white from their first sets and before they hit it big.
Hi Michael, Awesome channel and thank you for such insight into not only the notes, scales, the technique and mojo that make songs great!! I grew up in the 70's listening to Kiss and they were idols! I started on drums and wanted that deep drum sound. Tone is everything... Then I moved to guitar and now in my mid 50's the simplicity of Kiss is fantastic and fun to play. The Peter Criss drum sound is hugely heavy on PA power and compression to get that sound, because he's barely hitting the drums. Never mind how... Kiss is a phenomena in their own right. I'll look forward to more rockin reactions
I started my Kiss journey as a 5 year old kid in 1980 , I am a Aussie and in 1980 they were the biggest thing since The Beatles in Australia. I have heard the term " Gimmick band " talked about when it comes to Kiss and all I can say is if you think they are a " Gimmick" then you simply have not listened to them. I put them up with Zeppelin, Sabbath, AC/DC etc .....when it comes to classic Rock , you can pick any album from 74 to I would say 83 and they are all awesome! And I am sure people have already commented but Ace and Peter haven't been in the band for 20 year's, that's Tommy and Eric and the reason SO many old fans gave up on seeing them live , the fact they wear the make up of the OG legends pisses off A LOT of fans. For those who are curious checkout the album's Rock N Roll over, Hotter then Hell, The Debut self tilted, Dynasty and Creatures of the night.
The Drummer here is Eric Singer. He is the drummer on KISS ALIVE 3 aswell which I think is a great kiss album. I like the way he plays Detroit rock city
Big spectacle shows are one thing, but there's something to be said about '80's bands like The Replacements and Husker Du that walked out on stage in whatever they put on that morning and blew the roof off of the place. That's real rock and roll to me.
Skynyrd did that too. I suppose all the "excess" has its place but I think Skynyrd would melt the faces of all those "theatrical" bands. Sorta like they did The Rolling Stones at Knebworth in 1976.
If this is a very recent KISS concert then the drummer is Eric Singer. He's just wearing Peter's Cat-man make-up. Ace has also been replaced. That's Tommy Thayer playing the guitar solo.
Where did all the bands go that put in a good live show you ask? They went to Europe. Bands like Powerwolf, Amon Amarth, Beast in Black, Brothers of Metal. So many great rock and metal bands in Europe.
Last time I saw them I was living in Maryland. I lived in Colombia just across the highway from Merriweather Post and that's where I saw them in 2003. Always a fun show. Paul made the mistake of saying "Hello DC" and got booed into correcting it. lol
Great ears. In the 1990’s , I was at Six Flags in NJ. I saw Gene Simmons from about 10 yards away. He was carrying a toddler and with his family. An enthusiastic fan approached him and asked, “Are you Gene Simmons?” GS paused a second and said, “I am. (Pause) But not today.” It was polite but direct. Seeing the interaction, I just let him wander off.
I am 64 Years old... Been a KISS fan since the FIRST SECOND i heard them. My friend Mike brought 3 albums THE ORIGINALS in plain paper album sleeves. I never knew anything about their stage show and all of the STUFF. I did not know they wore makeup... My buddy said listen to this. I listened to them and went RUNNING into my sisters room. She is 9 years older then me and loved the Beatles... I yelled out... COME LISTEN TO THESE GUYS they are like the BEATLES on STEROIDS ( no one knew what Steroids were at the time so i think i said like beatles TIMES !)) Well I have since seen the 34 times all over the World. I have met Paul Stanley when he did the Phantom in Toronto. These guys are MY FAVORITE band!! ( others are Rammstein, Ghost) DO MORE KISS!!!!!
@@jonlate4581 I’m not sure. It was a really cool 3 of 4 floor like a octagon with balcony’s that you looked down on the stage parking in a dark alley. I would not park there or be out after dark in dc today.
Kiss for all the "ugh they're still going on?" comments they've gotten over the past decades, were still super fun live till even some years back. effective simple rocking music. And also complete shift from the music you're reviewing here, but could you react to some Allan Holdsworth again? His song "City Nights" would be my recommendation or any song of his for that matter.
Watching this performance is like watching is someone was in a Zeppelin or Van Halen tribute band and we’re talking about them like it’s the real deal. People can cover Hendrix,Page ,Halen, but it’s a cover dude. The guitarist here is like one out of a million dudes in a kiss tribute band he just got lucky cause he was there and he’s working w the original bass and Rhythm player. If you put on a kiss show from the 70s then you would of seen that special sauce lol
Yup, that is Thayer and Singer I believe. Check out some early Cobo Hall or '76ish concerts for some real badassness. These guys WORKED...every show!!! Ace's genius is in playing leads that fit the song perfectly , and stick in the mind. Listen to Makin' Love for some speed, Love Her All I Can for some intricate fingering, and/or 100,000 Years for some real oddness (Kulick apparently hated playing that song for the leads that were oddly difficult), and of course one of the nastiest leads ever, Strange Ways
Yo, watched Top Opening Songs and Top Closing Songs, and you mentioned REALLY huge shows w crowd participation. Immediately l thought of Megadeth live in Argentina Symphony of Destruction. I am still blown away by this video, the whole crowd jumping in unison and chanting! What are they saying? I was absolutely amazed when I finally got what they were chanting!!! There’s NO way Dave could have ever even imagined this kind of call and response when he wrote this song! It’s incredible, please check it out. 💯🔥🎸🤘
Also, KISS was my 1st concert! Cheap Trick opened, at the Forum Los Angeles. Must’ve been ’77. That was back when I played a tennis racket, man I was good, just nailed every solo😂😂😂
There aren't Record Companies any more to do big shows like a Kiss show. The bands I listen to are in large clubs. I will say Parkway Drive is on their European tour and it seems their pyrotechnics is huge, fire everywhere.
Thank you Mr Palmisano for always making great content! Love or Hate Kiss, the list of some great musicians that were inspired to pick up an instrument for the first time because of Kiss is very long! Dimebag, Dave Grohl, Marty Friedman, Alex Skolnick are first to come to mind. The spectacle and marketing over shadowed some of the raw talent overall imo. Very inspired by the Beatles, every member could pull of lead vocals, and had a "hit" or fan favorite? How many bands do this anymore?
I grew up in the 1970’s, and KISS was one of the first bands I listened to (thanks Dad!). They were larger-than-life superheroes. I think one of the only comparable “huge live bands” out there today is Rammstein. They understand that people are paying huge money, and deserve to be entertained.
Not Peter nor Ace as I'm sure you've heard a thousand times below. But you've nailed it. The SHOW. Bought a vinal of "Unmasked" (worst album) at a yard sale up the street for a dime in like 1981 (5 yr old) just because of the visual. Dug deeper now I'm STILL a lifelong, sentimental sgt. in the KISS Army.
For fun maybe compare the styles for all the kiss guitarists (Ace, Vinnie, Mark, Bruce, Tommy) and I bet you'll see quite a lot of views. So many fans like to crap on some and say others are great. I bet you'll find something positive to say about them all. Just don't pick a favorite and it will drive KISS fans crazy!
Hey Michael, hopefully you see and read all this . I don't normally comment on these but I've been watching your videos for awhile now and I love them. I'm impressed by all the detail you include breaking out all down . I have a big request. I was wondering if you could watch " you've got another thing coming" live from epitaph ( I think is how you spell it) . Especially richies big guitar solo. I find very unique. Anyways , keep the content coming! Thank you
Love Gun & Calling Dr Love are my 2 favorite Ace solos. Unholy is my favorite Bruce solo. Funny that they finished this song live with the end to I Just Wanna.
I know KISS doesn't get the respect as a band that they deserve. They can play Led Zep and has a few times but I listen to the music on the records and notice things like Gene singing See You In Your Dreams and Paul doing the backup in the call and response part of the song like female backup singers. Or Gene in Saint and Sinner having that cool metal swing beat with a very Westside Story feel at the end. It is just great how Gene does the bass on earlier songs like a horn section from Motown would do it. I love the stage shows but going into the Revenge record they really showed off the musical chops.
Thanks for doing a KISS song! Here’s my thing though; if you can’t wait to get to Ace’s part, why not play a version from back in the day that actually has Ace in it? No comparison. 🤟🏻🤟🏻
Yeah Peter and ace were the guys who came up with parts originally so the other guys are like zakk in ozzy they are just n the biggest cover band an get to do their own stuff as well
just a clarification...that is Eric Singer on drums (got bless peter, but he couldn't sing like that if a $1M was on the line). I saw Kiss on Midnight Special and they made me want to play drums. Eric is a ROCK SOLID drummer...Eric has the cat makeup on a la Peter Criss, but it ain't Peter. Guitarist is Tommy Thayer...NOT Ace. Yes, pretty much Ace's solo, but Ace and Peter couldn't stop drinking and doing drugs, so they were fired back in 2002-2004. Just wanted to help clarify that for everyone. I have seen them about 5 times myself....my 1st ever concert was with Kiss and Ted Nugent on the Crazy Nights tour.

Going to a Kiss concert in 2 months, really looking towards the huge and simple sounding music.
Dr. Love is the epitome of a rock song. Music, lyrics, and with the guys in character it is maybe the best ever.
KISS!! That band is what got me into guitar! Ace has such a killer note placement & killer vibrato!
People can hate on KISS, but, they changed rock and ruled the world. 50 years later we are still digging them.
Eric Singer is playing with KISS. Peter hasn't been in the band in 20 years and never played as well as Singer. Look Singer up. He's been in some great bands.

I think he does have to give credit to Peter and Ace, because those were the dudes that created that sound, which Tommy and Eric try to mimic.
watching kiss this weekend!
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2014
Thank you
You're finding a new found appreciation for Peter's drums, because that isn't Peter Criss.
I’ll never stop mike…. “Me on You” by muscadine bloodline. I think you would really get a kick out of the guitar parts
That's definitely Eric singer and Tommy Thayer, original lined up got back together from 96 till 2001 i think
Thanks, Kevin and Michael!
Ghost is the band you're looking for. Specifically the latest couple albums.
"I'm putting you on RUclips" -"OH NO!" "Cya" LOL, that was the best part! 🤣🤣🤣🤘🤘
Love Gun & Calling Dr Love are my 2 favorite Ace solos. Unholy is my favorite Bruce solo. Funny that they finished this song live with the end to I Just Wanna.
Checkout The Darkness in concert. OTT stage shows. Great fun
This song right here made me wanna play electric so basicly I can say KISS taught me electric guitar.
I learned it from rockroll over
I’d like to watch him checking out KISS circa 75-77.
Saw Ted Nugent open for Kiss in the early 90's. Ted Nugent blew Kiss away even though he only played for an hour and a half ! True story.
YAYYYY! KISS!
Go back to the 70’s with original lineup 🔥🔥🔥
Yes 👍
You are going to have many kiss fans now
Look at that huge crowd!
The drums sounds Thundering !!
Dimarzio Super distortion pickups!! man they sound great!
Always really interesting commentary. Would love to see you review Jerry Garcia Band - That's What Love Will Make You Do!
Thanks for doing a KISS song! Here’s my thing though; if you can’t wait to get to Ace’s part, why not play a version from back in the day that actually has Ace in it? No comparison. 🤟🏻🤟🏻
well im 56 and i went to my first kiss concert in 1981 and let me tell ya that aint peter kriss on drums that the other guy
Yup , Ace did a hell if job playing this solo, dirty and loud !
Yeah Peter and ace were the guys who came up with parts originally so the other guys are like zakk in ozzy they are just n the biggest cover band an get to do their own stuff as well
Like kiss or not, kiss remains one of the biggest and most influential bands of all time
just a clarification...that is Eric Singer on drums (got bless peter, but he couldn't sing like that if a $1M was on the line).
I believe that's Eric Singer on the drums in this video not , Peter Criss. Awesome band. Grew up in the 70s going crazy like every other fan.
Love Gun & Dr Love contain my 2 favorite Ace solos.
