Yup same here. Well, I don't know if the question really is, which one is most broken. What if all are equally most broken ? then I guess start from the beginning -- deep processing.
The Broken Barrel Approach to Learning **I. Introduction:** The Broken Barrel Approach is a personalized learning strategy that focuses on identifying and improving an individual's learning weaknesses. It's based on the analogy of a wooden barrel where each stave represents a different dimension of learning. Just like a barrel with a broken stave can only hold water up to the level of the broken stave, a learner is limited by their weakest learning dimension. **II. Ineffective Learning Strategies:** Before diving into the Broken Barrel Approach, it's crucial to understand why common learning strategies often fail. **A. The Silver Bullet Approach:** This approach involves seeking a single, magical solution to all learning problems. It's ineffective because: * **No Universal Solution:** There is no single technique that works for everyone in every situation. Different learning tasks require different approaches. * **Focus on the Tool, Not the User:** This approach ignores individual strengths and weaknesses, focusing on the technique instead of the learner. **B. The Strengths-First Approach:** This approach prioritizes developing existing learning strengths. While seemingly logical, it's flawed because: * **Weakness as a Limiting Factor:** In learning, your weakest skill often dictates your overall performance. A strong engine is useless if the car has flat tires. * **Neglecting Crucial Areas:** Focusing solely on strengths can lead to neglecting critical weaknesses that hinder overall progress. **III. The Broken Barrel Approach: A Paradigm Shift** Instead of seeking a magic bullet or focusing solely on strengths, the Broken Barrel Approach emphasizes: * **Identifying Weaknesses:** Understanding which dimension of learning is holding you back. * **Prioritizing Improvement:** Focusing on strengthening the weakest areas first. * **Iterative Process:** Continuously re-evaluating weaknesses and adapting the learning strategy. **IV. Deep Processing:** * **Definition:** The ability to understand information deeply, connect ideas, and solve complex problems. * **Strengths:** Easy understanding, strong memory, efficient learning. * **Weaknesses:** Difficulty grasping concepts, slow understanding, struggling to apply knowledge. **B. Self-Regulation:** * **Definition:** Awareness of learning processes, ability to adapt methods, and conscious control over thinking. * **Strengths:** Clear understanding of personal learning style, adaptable techniques, efficient learning across various situations. * **Weaknesses:** Lack of awareness of learning methods, difficulty adapting to different tasks, inconsistent performance. **C. Mindset:** * **Definition:** How you respond to challenges, mistakes, and uncertainty in the learning process. * **Strengths:** Embraces challenges, learns from mistakes, comfortable with experimentation and uncertainty. * **Weaknesses:** Avoids challenges, fears mistakes, seeks certainty, struggles with experimentation. **D. Retrieval:** * **Definition:** The ability to recall and test oneself on previously learned information. * **Strengths:** Effective spaced repetition strategies, challenging self-testing, strong recall ability. * **Weaknesses:** Lack of review, ineffective testing methods, poor recall. **E. Self-Management:** * **Definition:** Ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, maintain focus, and avoid procrastination. * **Strengths:** Effective time management, prioritization skills, focused work sessions, minimal procrastination. * **Weaknesses:** Poor time management, difficulty prioritizing, easily distracted, prone to procrastination. **V. Implementing the Broken Barrel Approach:** 1. **Identify Your Weaknesses:** Utilize the provided free quiz (link in the original text) to assess your strengths and weaknesses across the first three dimensions. 2. **Prioritize the Weakest Dimension:** Focus on improving the dimension that scored the lowest. 3. **Implement Targeted Strategies:** Research and implement specific techniques to address your weaknesses in that dimension. 4. **Re-evaluate Regularly:** Every 3-4 months, retake the quiz and adjust your focus based on your progress. **VI. Hello Justin, I advise that you publish a book on all what you know about learning and revision and being a professional learning expert/coach. It should also include your research and findings on assimilating efficiently. It will be invaluable to your subscribers and your audience at large...
Invest in the financial markets before retiring by diversifying across assets, allocating a small portion of your portfolio, staying updated on market trends, and considering long-term holding to balance risk and growth.
I feel sympathy for our country, low income people are now suffering to survive yet inflation and recession keep increasing daily, many families can't even enhance the good cost of living anymore. You've helped me a lot Sir Brian! Imagine I invested $50,000 and received $190,500 after 14 days
Very possible! especially at this moment. Profits can be made in many different ways, but such intricate transactions should only be handled by seasoned market professionals.
Some persons think inves'tin is all about buying stocks; I think going into the stock market without a good experience is a big risk, that's why I'm lucky to have seen someone like mr Brian C Nelson.
Thanks for another free resource Justin! I have a decent idea of what the quiz will tell me 😁 If you ever get a chance, it'd be interesting to hear how you think about reading / learning from books that aren't necessarily related to what you're currently studying, but rather caught your interest for whatever reason. People have different ideas about this, but most of them focus on just taking notes and/or these days obviously integrating them into a second-brain. Probably not as fitting the channel as much as what you tend to upload, but if you can fit it in somewhere it'd be cool to hear how you go about this!
Thank you this is a great technique, I've always been good a processing information but now that I'm trying to start my business and the areas of knowledge are starting to get more diverse and different while everything is connected has make keeping track of what I thinking really hard, so this is perfect timing

Hello sir. Failed math recently and I need help. Pls do make a video on subjects like math and the actual best way to learn them so I can become exceptional in it

I know all these strategies and have always bee a top scorer, even on a national level. However, I cannot study for the life of me anymore. I can't do it any more than a week or so. It has become unsustainable. Any solution?
Hmm, there could be more things at play. I'm in the exact spot rn as you described. What's actually holding me back is my poor mental health, which I'm working to make sure stays stable. And also trying to keep myself physically fit as much as the circumstances allow.
20/80 --- you don't need to learn every concept in what you're trying to be good at, but only the 20% essentials that generates 80% outcome. Proactive Imperfect.
Often people do look at things that don't really work well and define it as "weakness" or "short comings". The approach here though is still very different. Why? Because it first sought to understand what actually is important in the big picture and tried to understand each component at it's respective role/importance. And THEN tries to look at the weakest link with an understand on how to address it. Very different from what people normally do which is like: "oh you are bad at this, that is why you will never be able to do x and y". Which in itself is a fixed and not open mindset.
I don't know if you've watched Blue Lock, but the main character Isagi is a great anime example of having a growth mindset and constantly changing how you go about things. He literally reconstructs himself as a person and goes under various training strategies to improve. Also, he has a big ego yet isn't permanently defeated when he fails. In fact, he just gets more determined to succeed when he fails.
Thanks for keeping us updated! I feel sympathy and empathy for our country. low income people are suffering to survive, and I appreciate Victoria Anne Leonard. You've helped my family with your advice. imagine investing $30,000 and receiving $95,460 after 28 days of trading.
Protein present in urine these are present in a soluble form.however ,when sulfosalicylic acid adds, these protein form a white precipitate due to denaturation of protein
this broken barrel approach is similar to chess improvement. Your chess performance will best improve by improving your weakest area. If you have great calculation, strategic understanding, tactical vision, but struggle with time management and get into time trouble and lose the game then you can't improve until that weakest area is improved.
So, I took the test and I'm pretty much meh in all areas. Not bad exactly just nothing to write home about. Also, I'm retired. I don't need to do well at learning. Doesn't mean I don't want to, just that there is no pressure.
I think mindset is very important but to regulate tasks and leisure time aka time management is the most important one for me as even though efficient enough it feels in the beginning of day ,as the day goes on I feel that yeah that time I should have gone through that.......after the day or at that night. I'm watching for just a week over your video and it's proving much more useful for me. ❤❤❤ From India
I've found that I do better with project-based learning. I consume subject matter in small bytes so as not to overload [1202] my circuits. But, my note taking is horrendous and needs improvement...
Is there a strategy for someone that suffers severe ADHD? I've only just come across your channel maybe you may have spoke about ADHD before I'm not too sure I will have to look at your videos but ADHD is stalling my studying/learning. I know it sounds like an excuse but I feel like there's a steel more around me, mentally which seems to be preventing me from learning new things. I'm only 15% for your video so I'll keep watching Cheers pal
I mean, I’m not him but… in layers? So one group becomes a mind map, and another group another one, etc. Etc. Until you make one of the kind maps. Or just use all items. Probably the latter.
You said that a student is “only as good as his weakest link”, but you also said that a top student usually has very good deep processing and that's why copying study techniques from these guys usually won't work, because they can COMPENSATE even with mediocre techniques. So we should all improve our deep processing and be “OK” with everything else?
Hi Justin. I've been applying your methods and this helped tremendously, so thank you. However, there are still some specific areas in which I struggle to apply it. Specifically, I'm trying to learn about a library in a programming langage. That library is used to perform mathematical operation on matrices and vectors. Each operation has a specific name and arguments order. It's very hard for me not to make my notes super linear in this case, and I can barely group methods together (for example methods to create matrices, then methods to perform operations on them...) but my chunking stops there, and most importantly, it's super hard to find relationships, and retrieving the name of the methods is super hard. Being able to memorize & retrieve the name of the methods is what makes my day to day work much faster Same thing apply to learn linux or windows specific commands. Do you have any tips on that?
Think about it more in terms of a spectrum (for each aspect) rather than a binary strong/weak. You can't be perfect in each one and you probably can't always be great in any aspect if you don't work to maintain it at a high level, though habits help.
Study focusing on reasons behind: why this is true? How can I replicate this results? How can I explain this to a one year younger person? If this is not what you're struggling with, try to find the logic and test it to its limits: which cases do not follow this logic and why, or cases where one can doubt it applies for, why it really applies.
Good advice from the dude above me, if a bit hard to read. Also, these 2 things have helped me the most: Build from fundamentals. I can’t stress this enough, maybe you can get away with visualisations in the early stages, but please practice from the absolute beginning (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, equations, triangles, squares, etc. Etc.) till they become second nature, because 98% of the time the sole reason you don’t understand something is because you didn’t know the prerequisites well enough. The second thing is realising that you can learn any topic of math to arbitrary levels of understanding. There is no limit. You can understand *everything* in math deeper, so don’t feel stupid if you think you know all the prerequisites well enough, and that that isn’t the issue. Look up “Using spaced repetition to see through a piece of mathematics” by Micheal Nielsen if you want some arguments for that, cause I don’t have the time to type that shit. Ignore the spaced repition aspect, just focus on his experience with matrix diagonalization and the essay he read about the *equals sign*. Any topic. Good luck! You can definitely do it.
I might be dumb.. because I have no idea what you're talking about. I saw the test questions. I'm light. In what way are these questions gauging my learning style? It's like asking me what color I like, and you'll know how I was born; I don't get the connections at all.. help
The test is only to tell you which dimension you need to improve first. The video is about you improving each of your 5 learning dimensions, everyone has them and we should improve them to increase our performance in studies. In short, it is about improving each one: 1. learning and memorizing the material; 2. selecting and using the best methods and materials for each thing you want to learn; 3. having positive thinking when faced with challenges and mistakes; 4. taking tests and recall; 5. setting aside time and space to study with focus; You need to train yourself to be able to reasonably perform the 5 things in your study process. He probably actually explains how to improve these things in the course, but this video already gives us a goal to follow.
Stopping to studying 20 hours (sure) a day to 2 hours a day, the lower stress alone would make those 2 hours more efficient. In general the human brain isn't built for more than 4-6 hours of cognitive effort. Sure that can go up with practice, but there's inevitable degradation. Don't overdo it and don't skimp on sleep. Also I like your numbers magic man, very dramatic. (I realize the content of good quality, but the numbers man... you don't need to do that.)

My barrel has all the planks broken 😆
Hello Justin,
I advise that you publish a book on all what you know about learning and revision and being a professional learning expert/coach. It should also include your research and findings on assimilating efficiently. It will be invaluable to your subscribers and your audience at large...
This video is helpful in my learning pillars reassessment.
Finding yourself a good broker is as same as finding a good wife, which you go less stress, you get just enough with so much little effort at things
Brian demonstrates an excellent understanding of market trends, making well informed decisions that leads to consistent profit
Thanks for another free resource Justin! I have a decent idea of what the quiz will tell me 😁
If you ever get a chance, it'd be interesting to hear how you think about reading / learning from books that aren't necessarily related to what you're currently studying, but rather caught your interest for whatever reason. People have different ideas about this, but most of them focus on just taking notes and/or these days obviously integrating them into a second-brain. Probably not as fitting the channel as much as what you tend to upload, but if you can fit it in somewhere it'd be cool to hear how you go about this!
Thank you this is a great technique, I've always been good a processing information but now that I'm trying to start my business and the areas of knowledge are starting to get more diverse and different while everything is connected has make keeping track of what I thinking really hard, so this is perfect timing
great video Justin!..please make a video on how to improve or what actions to take to improve those dimensions
I'm so obsess with efficiency, and my inspiration is Justin Sung.
Yes me too I just started to realise this guy is brilliant, saw his video about his RAIL learning system a few days ago and it already changed my whole perspective
@@danielfischer4399 he is an evidence based guy, I was skeptical about him initially...when I first saw his critique of active recall and spaced repetition..
But after listening to him for a very long time, with open mind...I realized he is the only study guru we need here
I’m just starting to watch all Justin’s videos and I agree :)
I hope we all can save time and effort for the more valuable things in life 🙂↕️
Your videos are always full of information
This video was super helpful for my upcoming exams. Your every methods and tips indeed are so much effective. Much love ♡
Your content of the video and the effort u put in to create it and the motive behind it i.e to help others become great....These are the best things about you brother.
Thanks doc. I can tell 4 weaknesses out of 5. Self discipline is greatest my weakness. The only plus i have is deep processing. Even that is weak. When i join residency, I'll comment and thank you for this
Honestly really impressive how accurate the quiz is!
Another vital video. Thank you, Justin.
your story approach made it more relatable and fun to watch excellent approach Dr Justin sung.
Nice video. Very helpful
In this test I got unchained 44% mindset, 73% deep processing and 67% self-regulation
Awesome! Great insughts.
Hello sir. Failed math recently and I need help. Pls do make a video on subjects like math and the actual best way to learn them so I can become exceptional in it
My dad told me that math is like muscle the more you train them them better they become.Do countless of problems and practice test papers
@@aslamkoomar397 I understand this perspective but even with countless of practice. If I learn maths incorrectly my practice would be done incorrectly too and I'm trying to avoid that

@@MamtajK Thank you for the reply. I will hink about the reason.

20/80 --- you don't need to learn every concept in what you're trying to be good at, but only the 20% essentials that generates 80% outcome.
Proactive Imperfect.
thank you so much, it is a tremendous help to us ❤🎉
Often people do look at things that don't really work well and define it as "weakness" or "short comings".
I actually really love this video and the RAIL one
Thanks sung, hoping this corrects my maladies.
valuable content. Thank you!

Thanks for keeping us updated! I feel sympathy and empathy for our country. low income people are suffering to survive, and I appreciate Victoria Anne Leonard. You've helped my family with your advice. imagine investing $30,000 and receiving $95,460 after 28 days of trading.
You can make a lot of money from the market regardless of whether it strengthens or crashes. The key is to be well positioned.
I would really like to know how this actually works.
All you need is a good capital and the
service of a professional broker, with those your investment will most certainly produce high yields.
Do you have an idea of any good broker I
can start with?
Victoria is considered a key crypto

Great video! New subscriber 😊

this broken barrel approach is similar to chess improvement. Your chess performance will best improve by improving your weakest area. If you have great calculation, strategic understanding, tactical vision, but struggle with time management and get into time trouble and lose the game then you can't improve until that weakest area is improved.
Would like to hear from Justin regarding language learning.
How can I improve my mindset and self management?? I only lack these two dimensions....
So, I took the test and I'm pretty much meh in all areas. Not bad exactly just nothing to write home about. Also, I'm retired. I don't need to do well at learning. Doesn't mean I don't want to, just that there is no pressure.
Am greatful for. You work....my grades were amazing i got a 4.86 cgpa
I'm only 15% for your video so I'll keep watching Cheers pal
same here brother suffering a lot stop all your bad habits to make clean
I have a good processing and last week i had 2 light bulb moments in 2 of my study sessions, than I knew that all my effort was paid!!! thks justin 🙏
Great information
How would you recommend creating a mind map for a topic that has more than 50 items (objects)?
I mean, I’m not him but… in layers? So one group becomes a mind map, and another group another one, etc. Etc. Until you make one of the kind maps.
Or just use all items. Probably the latter.
Please make video on Logical thinking/critical thinkinh
Learning(understanding) is easy for me but memorising data is difficult
Ty i realized i need to get better at 4&5
You said that a student is “only as good as his weakest link”, but you also said that a top student usually has very good deep processing and that's why copying study techniques from these guys usually won't work, because they can COMPENSATE even with mediocre techniques.
So we should all improve our deep processing and be “OK” with everything else?
Next video How to improve these dimensions of learning.
Unchained... SPOT ON!
I'll be honest, my barrel is leaking from all 5 planks 🙃
@@pranavanm same bro same😭

Went from studying 20 hours a day to 2?
Thank you
Being able to memorize & retrieve the name of the methods is what makes my day to day work much faster
Same thing apply to learn linux or windows specific commands.
Do you have any tips on that?
This was actually somewhat painful to watch seeing all my weaknesses at face value. It needs to happen at some point.
I failed my 2nd sem of masters, ima use it to prepare for my entrance phd exam and for my last 2 semester
Should the nature of the subject to study a relevant factor on the approach to the study technic?
this should get more views honestly, pretty crazy how helpful this kind of awakening can be
It seems my whole barrell is broken. I'm weak in all the 5 dimensions.
I have weaknesses in all aspects.
Think about it more in terms of a spectrum (for each aspect) rather than a binary strong/weak. You can't be perfect in each one and you probably can't always be great in any aspect if you don't work to maintain it at a high level, though habits help.
feel like there's no barrel at all😶..........
How to improve the memory and retrieval ability?
the bb approach sounds very similar to test teach test
when you realize you're cooked in all 5 dimensions 💀
Good 19min ad for your courses 😊
People , who have rage with keyboards, ( i.e coders) what is the learning technique that helped you get better.😅😅
bruh...... is it ok if i have more than one weakness
self management is messing so hard w me rn...
no justin, you taught 667k people how to learn
i just want to become so smart at math
Study focusing on reasons behind: why this is true? How can I replicate this results? How can I explain this to a one year younger person?
If this is not what you're struggling with, try to find the logic and test it to its limits: which cases do not follow this logic and why, or cases where one can doubt it applies for, why it really applies.
Good advice from the dude above me, if a bit hard to read.
Also, these 2 things have helped me the most:
Build from fundamentals.
In short, it is about improving each one:
1. learning and memorizing the material;
2. selecting and using the best methods and materials for each thing you want to learn;
3. having positive thinking when faced with challenges and mistakes;
4. taking tests and recall;
5. setting aside time and space to study with focus;
You need to train yourself to be able to reasonably perform the 5 things in your study process. He probably actually explains how to improve these things in the course, but this video already gives us a goal to follow.
I’ll see how effective this guru is(bs artist)
Does anyone summarize this video?

Wow it opened my eyes. And probably need a new barrels😅

Can anyone tell me how can i prevent brain fog after 4 to 5 hour of study ( with break still my brain dont' respond to those cp questions) .

Can you tell me the best way to study in 5 mint and have evidence to your method it will be genes 👌🏻
Do you have a podcast?
Was, the bigger plate. But I assume that it is forgotten/unfinished. Not a high priority on his list I guess.
My barrel has a leak.
