I asked a question at a Victor Wooten clinic and the next thing I knew he was calling me up to the stage to hear me play. Yeah, that's pretty frightening, but he was encouraging and insightful. Great musician and genuinely good guy.
I met Vic a few years ago when he played with the Chick Corea Electrik Band at the Blue Note in NYC, and he was one of the nicest and most humble people I've ever met. We chatted and he took a few pictures with us. Very cool guy.
One things I've learned about Vic is that there is no one better to play beside. All he wants is for you to succeed and he will feed you energy as you play. The first time I played around Vic I was still in my terrified mode. The last time I played with Vic and Eric Struthers my head just went somewhere else and I had a great time. Wooten Woods just does that to you!
Oh man you make me laugh. Well done for not cracking up in front of Victor. My hands would shake to pieces. BTW, that music with Dennis and Tim. I want! I want!
if you watch him he always puts his whole body into whatever he does. On the other hand, If I played in front of Victor Wooten I'd probably have a seizure.
MTD does not currently make single cut basses. I've asked Mike about that, but he said that its not in the plans any time soon. unless a high profile musician ask for it maybe.
So cool! I remember one time I went to his bass camp, and he heard me soloing with some other guys. He came up and taught me how to tell more of a story with my solos by demonstrating how simple and effective you can start out to really give room to develop. It was one of the most life changing moments in my music experience! I had the advantage of not knowing he was listening until he did that...haha! Very creative playing, by the way!
Awesome performance!! Just curious, did you try/consider the TT frets like Henrik Linder's signature model for your signature model? If so why did you choose not to use them and if not, is that something you might be looking at in the future? Thanks!
It did not. And won't. I've talked about it a bunch on the channel. You can hear about it in this video: ruclips.net/video/CvqKYy-_I5U/видео.htmlsi=a0jJANdiJ2NH1htw
Hi Janek - love that chordal bit - can you run me through what pedals your using to get that effect? Love it. Also, do you have any suggestions for a bass with similar range to, but cheaper than a fodera? Im looking like, 1000-2000 area
Lots of ice cream, video games until 4 am and a foot rub by Slim Lil' Mama, his 450 pounds lady neighbor. He is back on track for 3 straight weeks after that.
If you are a musician I find it helps to sit down and just play your instrument. Don't put any limitations on yourself and just play and express yourself. To me it feels like I'm venting my frustrations and such through my horn. Afterwards I always feel at least a little better. Hope this helps!
Janek this may be a strange question, but could you maybe on your website (if its not there) show off some records you're playing on? Specifically I'd love to hear your examples of traditional bass playing/side man playing (like that session you found the fender music master at). I'd love to hear you're playing in a pop setting. It may be cool to have your recording credits listed as "p bass recordings" and others.
Outstanding chordal work at the beginning of the thing w/Vic [who clearly WAS metabolizing, thoughtful & digging what you were doing]. You might/shld replicate it if possible [was it an improvisation?] and record it simply into the digital-direct interface, whatever it is...and make it available to the guys on here via link. Justa thought. On another note, like to thank you for the heads up on SlowTV a while ago. Made the train trip Bergen to Oslo, all of it...and now my wife Sue is enrolled as well, we're doin' the Telemark Canal 11 hour trip together. Boy. What a production feat, that ~fully live stream on the 1st go 'round! Utterly bliss-out`ing, both. Cheers, D.
If possible you should try to book a show in Valencia, Spain! I'm studying at Berklee's campus in Valencia and I'm sure other students would be interested in seeing you guys on tour!
BassPlayer022 hey! I auditioned for Berklee a few weeks ago and applied to attend the campus in Spain. I also play bass. Do you think you can share your audition experience with me? And How’s the campus over there?
Good luck man! First off I loved Berklee when I was in Boston! And I love Spain as a country (I have been to quite a few cities here visiting family and what not). Combining the two is unbelivable(Also the only bass teacher here is Gary Willis which one of the two main reasons why I came to Spain). You applied for the first year abroad? I honestly love the campus here. It's great! I have a friend who is doing their first year abroad and then planning to do their their year in Spain. If you have any questions just message me
What a cute waving hand with Chelsea. Ya wally! Haha. Not really. So, lovely to see the behind-the-scenes intimacy of a great musician. (I'm sure Chelsea's musically wonderful also - I just haven't had the pleasure). Musically inspiring too, as always. Bless.
Hi Mr Janek you are an excellent bass player first of all, so please forgive me when I ask, why you didn't play something more tasteful in your choice of sounds for the looping segment on this video inprov in front of Mr Wooten instead of that "incoherent noise effects" ? because that would have been a lot less flattering for listeners , I mean is visible that Mr Wooten is trying to play along by moving his head like he seems sonically perturbed because the performance seemed rough and confuses. It also detracts from your obvious excellent abilities ?
This is primarily aimed at the antagonist "Markus B", but it takes two to tango so I hope both of you understand this message. Do you honestly think this kind of discourse is going to be tolerated on my channel? Everyone gets one warning, then they get blocked. Clean it up, or kindly move on and take your vitriolic whining elsewhere. There is no room for negativity here. It is pointless, destructive, and leads to so many destructive outcomes and results that I will not be a party to it. If you don't have something constructive to say, don't say it. Why waste your time? Shouting insults on the internet is the cowards way out. Far more complex, intense and difficult is the ability to show compassion, understanding, and empathy. It doesn't come easy, but you should try it one day, it'll change your life.
Janek I didn't start anything , this guy came attacking me for a constructive criticism ,I never said you're a terrible bass player or anything like that , you're a talented musician and that is why I was surprised by the segment and made a comment . You call it negativity ( which is the new terminology now for "Just leave comments that we all agree on" for some reason ) and also since you place your video out here on youtube , you left comments option On and didn't specify "no criticism please only good positive comments" I obviously didn't realize I was supposed not to say anything here ,so yeah that is happened
Markus, What actually happened (before you edited or deleted all your offensive comments), was that you threw out insults instead of constructive criticism. I don't care what anyone thinks of my playing, who I am, or the content I post online. I do care about healthy discussion in a safe environment. Leaving comments enabled on content I post online is an open invitation for both positive and negative feedback alike. But when you don't like something, instead of swearing and shouting, why not convey your thoughts eloquently and calmly just as you would if you liked something? I am by no means asking for people to leave comments that everyone agrees on, that would be so boring if we all had the same opinion. But I am very specific about not tolerating hateful, offensive, or abusive communication on my channel. I don't think that's too much to ask. And just because my performance didn't meet your expectations of what you wanted to hear doesn't make it "incoherent noise effects" as you put it. It just was what it was in the moment and anyone's opinion of it, good, bad or indifferent, is purely subjective. And please, if you post something again on this channel, stand behind it rather than editing or deleting comments to soften the true sentiment of what you wanted to convey.
@@_Majoras I stand by not only what I have already stated in the thread above, but also what victor reinforced in the video at: ruclips.net/video/OjzJZxTwXrU/видео.html Do you know Victor well enough to be surprised by his reaction? I'm by no means trying to say that by knowing him myself I am in any way better than anyone else, simply that to make a statement as bold as the one you have, one would assume that you knew him very well. But the fact that you made a statement like this shows that not to be the case. I could have played something that he truly loathed (not that I think he's the kind of person to really loath things actually) and he would have found something positive about it. It's what makes him great as a musician, as a human being, and as an inspirational figure and mentor/educator to so many.
Quite interesting what Victor is saying about people commenting on his music. It seems to me that there's a kind of critism culture around that put political correctness over anything else. Will it be possible to enrapture everyone with ones music....I think not. But as Victor is saying he thinks it's better to have a reaction to what he's making than no respons. The idea that you should only say something if it's of positive character doesn't make sense to me....it's in the area where we listen an respond things evolve. Of course it has to be in a respectful matter...no doubt.
Exactly. It is way better to get "bad" or "negative" response than no response at all. Or to put it in other words: Worst thing than can happen is indifference. Showing emotions, even if they are not "positive", is far better than no emotions at all....
