The ii-V-I book is filled with tons of useful exercises and no fluff. There are no magic answers to make you a better player in 30 minutes, so be prepared to work. If you put some daily work in then over time it will help you navigate the fretboard while burning in the sound of ii-V-I. Most of us won't reach the level of fluency that Janek has so don't feel intimidated. IF you are new to learning about harmony then just doing the first 8 exercises in all keys in many positions on the fretboard will be useful.
REALLY LIKE THIS VID! the2-5 book is lotta fun, rich in challenges,& bringing up names/rcordings i haven't checked for toooo long! 2 MINUTE DRILLS!! Yes indeed!!!
I want to say thanks for this video, I've seen it before but only now gotten it that working on these exercises starts to open up your vocabulary and make you able to connect chords in new ways without thinking so much but feeling. Get the brain out of the way. I'll be working on this one for the next year if not more. Thanks bro!
Thanks Janek, you are a creative thinker and not shy to show us your creative approach to your publications! Your enthusiasm is infectious...to deep practice your exercises!
Excellent video - a very practical and overt demonstration of how simple "exercises" can easily find their way into coherent language when they are fluid; helping to create a real voice 💡 Continued Thanks for all your effort 🍀
I saw an improvised solo from you on Instagram and now I’m watching your RUclips videos and I just bought your book Iconic Lines. You are maybe the best teacher I’ve ever learned from. Really lit a fire in me to play more. Thanks so much. ❤️
Whoa, its been a little while since i've checked in on your videos Janek (life has gotten in the way a little) but your production style has seriously stepped up! The actual content has always been great but the lighting, camera use and editing is definitely upgraded. Nice work sir! As a bassist who has recently gotten into photography and videography myself, I definitely appreciate the work you've put into this.
JG, I have been listening to you since the early 2000's(e.g. that Jungle Groove on your Myspace page😉💣). I enjoy and appreciate your creativity, enthusiasm, and work ethic. Your teaching is just as happening as your playing, and you continue to provide lots of great content for players of all levels. Just wanted to express some gratitude for years and years of great music; wishing you and yours all of the best!
That last exercise inspired me to take that idea and applying it to some random phrases, as I was trying to do exactly that during rehearsals this Thursday... And I failed miserably haha Great content Janek, all these exercises are great!
Thank you Janek - I love that you explained the concept of learn it and then forget it at the start. Complete absorption of material/concepts/vocabulary so it becomes second nature. Repetition.
Great content as always Janek. I'm starting to explore the II V I cadence and for the moment I make my own simple progressions to play on top and focus on the notes that define the chords. Mixing that with standards and the information you put out will go a long way. Thank you
From Wikipedia, “A contrafact is a musical work based on a prior work. The term comes from classical music and has only since the 1940s been applied to jazz, where it is still not standard. In classical music, contrafacts have been used as early as the parody mass and In Nomine of the 16th century. “ Because this is the internet and I am not a disciplined student there will now be a trip down the parody mass rabbit hole.
This is great stuff. Thank you! Can anyone point me to the app/program/whatever that Janek was using to play the backing drum tracks for these exercises?
I have been uploading some of my live footage for members at www.janeksbassstudio.com/ in the "Live Archive" section. There were some great moments on that tour for sure. Really nice to play that many shows in a row with the same band, and get inside the music.
People don’t think twice. Buy the book! It helped me greatly.

Great exercises and examples, maybe I get myself tempted to one of the books, cheers!
Why would anyone downvote this?

Thank you.
Ah, something to watch with my coffee drinking :-)
Cheers! Having my cup now.
I may have to name my son Janek. Thank you for always pushing our understanding of bass and music in general.
Another great video. I love the metric modulation of that exercise, that's definitely getting added to my practice routine!
Your videos reached a new level...Great I like it. Congrats👍

Amazing and inspirational, I've subscribed (ALL). I could not find your spotify list, can you help Janek?
Definitely encouraged me to get practicing every day. No excuses. No zero days.

Only sad/jealous people can dislike a video like this. Great, Janek!!!

The backing tracks are from my books that I was talking about in the video, and are all available for download at my website: janekgwizdala.com/store
I really dig the background music in your recent videos, especially the outros. Are these yours? Cheers! :)
Yeah man!
The lighting is perfect in this video!
Link for the rest of the concert?! That band was smacking

Can you make your PDFs easier to scroll through? Like can we go to the chapter headings then click them to get to the chapter content?
How is that Bass tuned? As a by ear player, I notice what I'm seeing is not what I'm hearing 😁🤔
EADGC, from lowest to highest pitch
