    This is easily my favorite M&P song. The groove, the back and forth between the vocals, the risquee (for the time) lyrics... Such a great song. I love that they're actually singing this live as opposed to with a track, they were all so talented.

    Did live in the sixties as a kid, but love them so much. The harmonies are just awesome. All could sing well, but if Mama Cass was not in the group it wouldn't have been as great as they were. Wish there was more groups like this. Could listen to them all the time.....and to Mama Casa alone. Wow what a voice!

      Said before, one of the great tragedies of modern music was when this band ended. She was the glue, the voice of an angel, no group could have survived a loss like that, she was just amazing, one of my favorite female vocalists of all time, certainly the favorite female vocalist of my youth - and there were many great ones in those days, 60's and early 70's. I still miss her and still love their music.

    "Creeque Alley"
    John and Mitchie were gettin' kind of itchy
    Just to leave the folk music behind;
    Zal and Denny workin' for a penny
    Tryin' to get a fish on the line.
    In a coffee house Sebastian sat,
    And after every number they'd pass the hat.
    McGuinn and McGuire just a-gettin' higher in L.A.,
    You know where that's at.
    And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass.
    Zallie said, "Denny, you know there aren't many
    Who can sing a song the way that you do; let's go south."
    Denny said, Zallie, golly, don't you think that I wish
    I could play guitar like you."
    Zal, Denny, and Sebastian sat (at the Night Owl)
    And after every number they'd pass the hat.
    McGuinn and McGuire still a-gettin higher in L.A.,
    You know where that's at.
    And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass.
    When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swathmore
    But she changed her mind one day.
    Standin' on the turnpike, thumb out to hitchhike,
    "Take me to New York right away."
    When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps;
    Called John and Zal and that was the Mugwumps.
    McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get no higher
    But that's what they were aimin' at.
    And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass.
    Mugwumps, high jumps, low slumps, big bumps -
    Don't you work as hard as you play.
    Make up, break up, everything is shake up;
    Guess it had to be that way.
    Sebastian and Zal formed the 'Spoonful;
    Michelle, John, and Denny gettin' very tuneful.
    McGuinn and McGuire just a-catchin' fire in L.A.,
    You know where that's at.
    And everybody's gettin' fat except Mama Cass.
    Broke, busted, disgusted, agents can't be trusted,
    And Mitchie wants to go to the sea.
    Cass can't make it; she says we'll have to fake it -
    We knew she'd come eventually.
    Greasin' on American Express cards;
    Tents low rent, but keeping out the heat's hard.
    Duffy's good vibrations and our imaginations
    Can't go on indefinitely.
    And California dreamin' is becomin' a reality...

    • @almostfm
      @almostfm 3 года назад

      I'm pretty sure the vocals were live, for a couple of reasons: The harmonies are different from every other time I've heard them do it, and if you listen starting with the"Mugwumps/High Jumps" part, the vocals get ahead of the instrumentals until Michele pulls them back on "Michelle, John, and Denny/getting very tuneful"
      Singing live to a recorded instrumental track was not uncommon back in the day.

    Mama Cass era Brilhante. Os quatro na verdade eram Excelentes, mas acredito que ela veio muito antes da "lacração" e sem uso de exposições ou mesmo apelos em uma sociedade fraca e dependente de apoio, ela foi Brilhante. Cantou, Dançou, se divertiu e Foi Feliz. Suas medidas, Peso ou vida pessoal ficaram onde deviam: na Conta dela.

      Ela sofria muito hate por causa do peso. Inclusive dos coleguinhas da banda que adoravam tirar sarro do corpo dela. Você não tem como saber o que ela sentia, quem sabe se a "lacração" já existisse as pessoas se ligariam de que é cruel fazer isso com outras pessoas. Por anos muitos acreditavam que ela tinha morrido engasgada com sanduíche, pq claro que a gorda só poderia estar comendo comendo comendo. Não sei onde isso é bom pro psicológico de alguém.

That was back then when people weren't snowflakes and hurt by everything someone said. And as she was getting fatter she choked on a ham sandwich and died. True story. Google it.

      Michelle told the story about the "no one's getting fat" line. I don't remember if I heard it here on you tube or on TV but it seems she was afraid to tell Cass the line so she made John do it. She thought it was funny as hell. things were different back then. None of the political correctness we see today. Cass died from a heart attack, not a sandwich.

      She brilliantly preempted the fat insults by owning it and taking it away as an insult. This helped her immeasurably as a performer to get out there on stage and give it her best. Not condoning her lifestyle or choices but that was a smart move and it probably helped Adele and even others get past their stage jitters when they felt fat or ugly or self conscious.
