  • Business Insider joined a Bakerloo line driver on her daily routine driving a train on the London Underground. Jackie Moriarty has been a driver for 19 years. She told us the things she likes, dislikes, and has experienced while working for Transport for London. Being a Tube driver can be quite demanding, requiring long periods of concentration and many hours in isolation. However, perks do come with the job such as being able to travel free on TFL services.

@chris jones there are many jobs that only require your attention at certain moments and not the whole time. For example commercial pilots fly on autopilot most of the time. However those jobs presently can't (or shouldn't) be automated precisely because of those moments in which you do need a person to do or complete the work.
But yeah in the near future more and more jobs will get automated, to the extent that people like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have said that a universal basic income (ubi) will be necessary because many people will be unemployed.

@chris jones you wouldn't say the same thing if it were your job that were at stake. Who are you to claim that other people should lose their job while you keep yours? You talk about illiteracy but you are repeatedly ignoring that just because a job doesn't require your attention all the time doesn't mean that in some moments it does.

Graham Certain public service jobs require expertise in their respective fields and pay quite well. For instance, sometimes when I’m riding the subway, I see flyers advertising civil service exam dates for positions like an escalator maintainer or an engineer that require several years of experience and have wages that start from $45 an hour. It’s not a great idea to shoehorn all public service workers into an “untouchable” category, as there are positions that are relatively skilled.

As a pilot, I would have to say their salary is nothing for the public to complain about. Train drivers have a huge responsibility. Not just the Tube but all rail lines as well. It is well known that the two safest modes of travel are air and rail. Sure, serious incidents happen from time to time and they make the news...because they are so few and far between. The most critical period for an aircraft is during take off and landing, the rest is fairly mundane really, in a modern commercial aircraft, although pilots are continually monitoring, they do not just sit back and stare into space. The chance of an aircraft colliding with another is virtually zero during flight. Same goes for trains on rails really, although it can happen. Train drivers on the other hand have to be continually looking and checking. This is ground transport, where anything can go wrong, from people doing "one unders" at stations, (not just at Tube stations either), cars stalled or stuck at level crossings, people on tracks, the list goes on. Signals have to be observed continually, and trains have to be stopped safely at platforms, with passenger safety and comfort in mind. Whilst there may be a lot more theory required to operate an aircraft, once in the air and the aircraft is performing correctly, which is 99.9 per cent of the time, little can go wrong of an emergency nature. people cannot jump under a plane in the air, if the weather causes a rough ride that is not pilots fault, there are no vehicles blocking our route needing emergency reactions, and if another plane was a bit close there would be alarms and automatic inputs to avoid it. Trains cannot be steered, they cannot avoid objects and can take a while to stop. They have no reverse thrust capabilities like an aircraft, or flaps and rudders to steer with. only the rails. And most issues with trains are caused by the public. At airports, passengers are only a very small reason for problems. So do train drivers deserve their 50 thousand plus a year salaries. You bet. And remember, they are paying tax on their salary also. Like pilots, they want to get their passengers home safely and without incident. And to do that, it takes extensive training, (as well as involved exams) to achieve it. As for the strikes, no industry is immune from those. I think flyboy747uk's comment here sums it up fairly well.

Having spent many years maintaining aircraft and then trains, I have to be inclined to disagree with you.
If something goes wrong on a train, it comes to a stop. No falling out the sky, no burning to death as it tries to land, no flying into terrain, no injuries from rapid decompression... the lost goes on.
A derailment or crash is most likely to be the fault of a track worker or signaller not a driver.
When something goes wrong, fitters get called out to deal with it.
Have you seen the average BR cab?
A speedo, a brake chest pressure gauge and an air reservoir gauge.
About three warning lights and 6 buttons.
Nothing complicated about the operation it's self.
The complication is route knowledge and railway rules.
Signallers and fitters have a far more safety critical and responsible job, yet don't earn anywhere near what a driver does.
Have lesser rest period requirements, worse shifts and require far more training.
Train drivers get paid so well thanks to militant unions and holding the nation to ransom.
Not saying its a bad thing just the true reason.

  • @RazordraacGaming
    @RazordraacGaming 5 лет назад +279

Something people aren't considering with pay is the fact that you're also doing shift work, often at night where pay is usually much higher anyway. You have to know your route like the back of your hand, signal/junction locations and braking distances - I've heard many train companies say that they pay drivers for their commitment to the job at any time and knowledge because memorising many miles worth of a route to the metre is not easy for anyone. It's easy to judge when you have no actual idea of how much work is actually involved.

    • @richardwillson101
      @richardwillson101 Год назад +13

I love it when people try to justify the pay for a job like this, it's always "Safety" or "Route knowledge".
Yet many other safety critical, high knowledge requirement jobs on the railway pay 1/2 and have worse shift patterns/rest requirements.
A driver carries responsibility for their own passengers, but a fitter or signaller has that on a much larger scale.
They carry the responsibility for every passenger on the network, with their actions having consequences well beyond the present.
But it's OK, a driver "MIGHT" have to evacuate their train one day 🤣
Or has to remember the one route that they sign.
It's time we went to in cab signalling, ATP and as much automation as possible.
It's the safest way and the sensible progression of our railways.

    • @nearlyretired7005
      @nearlyretired7005 Год назад +4

@@richardwillson101 I am inclined to agree with you.
A driver has a safety critical roll on ONE train.
A line controller/service controller in peak has to think
about over one hundred trains on the Nothern Line, where I worked for thirty years.
      It's a job I wouldn't do!

Also the trains vary greatly from one city to another, and sometimes even from one line to another in the very same city. It's not like airplanes for example that a Boeing 737 is roughly the same in Europe, in Asia or in America. Each train model is unique as they are custom made.
Also signals, procedures, rules etc. are different in each place, unlike in aviation for example.

Fascinating really. A system with such history I guess. Inspired me so much as a kid I wish to eventually do this one day as a dream job. I do like the Bakerloo as well those trains have a lot of character but they need replacing. They were built in the early 70s for the jubilee line I believe. I’ve spoken to many who work for this system and it’s a lot more than just driving. Lots of safety involved. As for automation this system got it first on the Victoria line in the late 60s. I think still someone should be in the cab to be fair to open and close doors.

To people who are shocked about how much they get paid. Have you ever thought how much money a single train earns in the peak? It is a serious money maker. Just because railway unions have had a long history of protecting and arguing for a fair wage and your industry hasn't, doesn't mean they should they align themselves with everybody else scrimping to get a long. They are a model for people coming together and arguing for what is just and fair.

I needed to know why don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so they extend the unused abandoned underground stations.
Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into six cars per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those six cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers?
A Stock Trains and 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it bigger and extend it to bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Train tunnel into a High-Speed train?
The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Train line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbish 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 37 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project that is OK for London Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden.
oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden Easily.
Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street and also make another brand new tunnel train station in Chingford and could they extend the DLR?
All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Six carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains.
Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and they can order Every 17 Octagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.11 and unique small no.10 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 117MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 117MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!, oh can you make all of those Coal Boxes’s 16 Tonnes for all of the 117MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are Told!! And please do something about these essential Professional ideas Please the Prime Minister of England, the Prime Minister of Sweden, the Prime Minister of Germany, the Prime Minister of Italy, the Prime Minister of Poland and that Includes the Mayor of London.

I grew up in New York City and fortuitous indeed was I, to live in such an argus-eyed, never sleeping and pulsating city, replete with a magnificently ordered subway system; a teeming, albeit mysterious, subterranean wonderland, full of promise, of dread (in it's own way), and a seeming paradox of not unmixed delight!
Indeed, what more could a kid desire?

Likely as not, I would have done better on the test if I hadn't met a new girl friend the week before, and with plans for a golden sconced evening ahead, I could no more concentrate on the test than fly!

I don't think people realise that after 6 weeks of learning the rule book you are fully responsible for your actions. If you don't follow the rules to the letter and someone gets killed due to your negligence you're going down for manslaughter. It's a huge responsibility and you are responsible for thousands of people's lives on a daily basis. One wrong move and it could be fatal. It's most definitely not stress free and you're constantly under pressure. That's why the money is so good. Say goodbye to any kind of social or family life.

To all those people that think that £50K and free travel on the Transport is an easy job, remember this most tube lines star at 5.30am weekdays and drivers have to be at the deport long before that time to get the trains out on time. Likewise, the last train at night is typically after midnight.
Remember you are down in a small hole underground in London, some of these tunnels are deep, running under other tube lines, in the event of a fire or incident, there is nowhere but forwards or backward to go. Many tunnels have as little as 12” space between the train and the tunnel wall so it is easy to get trapped in a tunnel. I just wonder how many people could cope with that. These tube tunnel are dirt, dusty and some parts very noisy, so your health is obviously going to take a hit with that lethal combination. And finally, if you can cope with all the rest, when someone decides to end it all and jump in front of a tube train, remember the driver is the one with a window seat.

Bahahahaa you're trying to make it sound like the hardest job in the world 😂 The hours are managed by shifts.
Most of the tube system is overground so all this talk about small tunnels is pathetic as if millions of people around the world don't take tube systems all over the world.
Most of the tube system is also automated.
Most people who jump in front of trains do it on overground, national rail services, not London Underground.
Why are you acting like this is the hardest jobs in the world when it is one of the easiest? 😂😂😂

The job is easy and they are way overpaid. Being a nurse is far more dangerous than a tube driver, and yet they have to queue at food banks in order to feed themselves and their family.
Tube workers are just greedy barely human people that try to justify their salary any way they can. There is no longer a need for them, if AI can drive a car it would have no problem operating a simple train.

Get an oyster card or use your contactless bank card. They're much cheaper than getting a paper ticket. The fare on the oyster caps out at like £5.60 compared to £11.70 on a paper ticket.
Edit: They changed it now, its £7 daily cap for zones 1 and 2 only. Zones 1-6 get charged a maximum of £12.80 but still, paper tickets only offer zones, and the contactless oyster card/bank cards will charge you a single fare if only doing a single fare, still making it cheaper than a paper ticket.

It's a grey area. Bakerloo line T/Ops learn both the NR and LU rulebooks due to the shared section between Queens Park and Harrow and Wealdstone, so there would be competency in that sense. Generally you'd have to start a fresh anyway as you aren't transferring from a mainstream TOC or FOC to that company, instead something with completely different work patterns, stock etc. :)
