Throwing with shoulder pads should be used in all combines and pro days on all quarterbacks who are entering the NFL draft. This will show the true mechanics of ones throwing motion and touch on their passes. A little discomfort is worth it when one is considering you for the highest profile position in sports. It's really up to the players. The whole point of pro day is for the players to showcase their skills in a comfortable setting. Yeah it would impress if players wore pads, but think about it from a player position. If they had a lot to lose, ie potential 1st round picks, why risk it? Game Tape > Pro day. always. yes it impresses, but you have to weigh the pros and cons. If you do well with pads, maybe you move up a few spots. You do bad like Bridgewater, you get dropped off of a cliff in terms of stock. For 4th rounders and down, wearing pads will help them more than hurt them.

He clearly lacks great arm strength. Those straight drop passes take a bit too long with his slow release and the absence of power. His footwork and speed are quite good. He'll make a good back-up QB and maybe a middling starter down the road. Look at an video of Bradshaw or Namath warming up. They are just standing there, talking to someone, and throwing laser beams. It's the ideal.

Not sure why everyone was so impressed w/ his last throw. When I was 14 years old I could throw a college football 50 yards. And I never played football. I'm sure I could throw a ball 65 yards even now. That said, he looked good over-all. I'd draft him in the 1st round. Around 12-15th pick.

Good footwork, and good accuracy. However, he has a weak arm compared to most and a slow release. Hopefully his athleticism makes up for that, but I personally wouldn't use my #1 pick on him.
I'm not counting, you can just eye it. Fast releases would be Peyton, Brees, RGIII, Romo, Rodgers. But if you want a time, Romo has a 0.35 release time and I just clocked Manziel his was 0.75 so twice as long, I consider that slow, but taking nothing away from him, he can improve and rely on his athleticism in his early years.
Funny NFL times from scouts and analysts usually talk about his quick release. Ever watch sports science. Tim Tebow, in college, threw the ball faster than .75 seconds @ about faster .60. I seriously doubt he throws faster than manziel. I doubt you can eye his release time especially with times that low. Especially since the average person reacts at about .2. So your time would be off by a good bit. That .35 you got on Romo I'm sure you've read somewhere and I doubt they eyed that time. If he threw the ball slower than Tebow I'm sure it'd be a glaring weakness talked about on the regular on ESPN.
I'll admit I'm torn on his draft position too. I feel he's over hyped and would serve better as a late first rounder. This QB class is one of the weaker in recent years it seems. I wouldn't go with a QB with a high draft pick.

I'm not sure what to think about Manziel. I think his pro day was impressive, but his deep balls have some hang to it. But I don't think he lacks arm strength. You can really see him throw some zip most of the time. I also looked at his foot work. It's solid. Not the best, but could be improved. Also, the back pedal throws? Were they scripted? Most of the time those are INT in the NFL. Overall, I am still impress. Well everyone has their own analysis. I think Clowney's motivation issue will come back to haunt him in the end. I was a big Bortles fan, but looking at some stats, he threw a lot of come back routes in college. What I do love though, is that Bortles is willing to stay in the pocket and take the hit while delivering passes. Reminds me a lot of Big Ben. John Haver i spoke briefly about him not being able to pick apart a defense and i spoke about his throws and not generating power from his hips. Its no question he wasnt nfl material but im saying being on the worst team obviously didn't help him, never had talented receivers never had a RB his line could also do some work.

+Metro Boomin "Only" ran a 4.5? A 4.5 is fast as hell for a QB and fast enough for most positions. There's not that many QB's running faster than that. Heck if you run a 4.4 you're just under the peak of acceleration for football which is a 4.3. Off the top of my head RG3, Vick, are the only QB's in the 4.3 range . Newton, Tannehill, Luck, Wilson, Gabbert, Kaepernick are all in the area code of 4.5, 4.6. Of course it means more for some than others. Newton being built like a Edge Rusher, but running a 4.5 is very impressive.
Further breakdown. Passes 5yards or less 20. 5-10yds 17, 10-15yds 6, 15-20 8, 20-25 4, and 25 and over 10.that's 37-65 thrown under 10 yards. Times to watch for nfl throws that separate qbs that manziel failed to impress. 3:50, 4:05, 4:18 was a pick6, 5:02 was a pick. And 6:02. Any of manziel passes over thirty yards were rainbows averaging a whopping 4.9 seconds and under 48 yards traveled through air. All of this just doesn't translate to franchise to me let alone first rOund pick

A lot of those deep balls and some of those short passes were interceptions instead of having unguarded receivers they need to put corners in on receivers
You can never know if one pass is going to be an interception without the WRs not being covered, but it shouldn't matter, if he's putting the on a dime 95% of the time with uncovered receivers he will go ham in the NFL. Granted that he has to make the correct reads with the defenses and the corners I understand that, but we all have seen some of the decision making by Johnny Manziel, it's just amazing, he is just that good.
But look at the hang time on the deep balls that's enough time for a corner to get a good angle and pick the ball but I won't judge till I see him in his first NFL game
The only knocks i see are all coach-able. Crosses his feet some, tips off the deep ball by holding the ball higher and on deep balls he's finessing it too much trying to put in there perfect instead of driving it and making the WR go get it. He's going to be pretty good, lot of Mark Brunell in him
I don't know how anyone can be impressed with this. He had a couple of good throws but that's it. I agree with other comments about his footwork which is good, but he really, really lacks in the throwing department.
Sorry Johnny but today's nfl needs pocket passers tall accurate qbs that will stay in the pocket looking over the head of a 6 ft 3 defender and making throws to recievers that are in stride so the potential of the hit coming is less influential and damaging, a receiver running back to the ball or sideways on a scramble exposes him to being hurt more often
His footwork and his release time are fine, but even I could see problems in his accuracy. Several of his throws to the outside lacked zip or looked like they were thrown too far in front of or behind the receiver, causing the receiver to have to adjust to it instead of catching it in stride, a recipe for pass breakups, tackles before receivers can get yards after the catch or picks. Deep passes hung in the air a bit too. On the only deep throw where he dropped back, I don't think he drove it through enough and he didn't do the greatest job of shifting his weight. The backpedaling on a few of his throws is problematic as well. Pro days are pretty much worthless anyway, QBs can get away with poor placement on throws when there isn't anybody defending and people rarely notice. If he doesn't get a good offensive coordinator to refine his accuracy and his decision making, plus a half-decent o-line, he'll most likely be a bust.

Scrambling qbs increase the chances of bad throws and turnovers as we'll as injuries for the entire offensive lineup, defenders love hitting making it easier for them by leaving ur recievers to dry only will hurt ur chances for a healthy team if given the chance of a playoff run against the best of the league, it's entertaining to watch but it gambles everyone involved, a great offense starts from a QB that makes the best chances of success from smart decisions that's involve deception of an overly aggressive defense and can stay in the pocket making throws that will be over defenders heads . NFL defensive linemen are MUCH bigger, faster, and stronger. Johnny Manziel also seems to have some trouble keeping a decent spiral while on the run, or at least is inconsistent. He also had trouble with deeper throws. I think he can survive in the NFL, but he won't thrive.

Good footwork, and good accuracy. However, he has a weak arm compared to most and a slow release. Hopefully his athleticism makes up for that, but I personally wouldn't use my #1 pick on him.
Slow release. Really? When do you start counting and what do you consider fast.
I'm not counting, you can just eye it. Fast releases would be Peyton, Brees, RGIII, Romo, Rodgers. But if you want a time, Romo has a 0.35 release time and I just clocked Manziel his was 0.75 so twice as long, I consider that slow, but taking nothing away from him, he can improve and rely on his athleticism in his early years.
Funny NFL times from scouts and analysts usually talk about his quick release. Ever watch sports science. Tim Tebow, in college, threw the ball faster than .75 seconds @ about faster .60. I seriously doubt he throws faster than manziel. I doubt you can eye his release time especially with times that low. Especially since the average person reacts at about .2. So your time would be off by a good bit. That .35 you got on Romo I'm sure you've read somewhere and I doubt they eyed that time. If he threw the ball slower than Tebow I'm sure it'd be a glaring weakness talked about on the regular on ESPN.

I'll admit I'm torn on his draft position too. I feel he's over hyped and would serve better as a late first rounder. This QB class is one of the weaker in recent years it seems. I wouldn't go with a QB with a high draft pick.

I'm not sure what to think about Manziel. I think his pro day was impressive, but his deep balls have some hang to it. But I don't think he lacks arm strength. You can really see him throw some zip most of the time. I also looked at his foot work. It's solid. Not the best, but could be improved. Also, the back pedal throws? Were they scripted? Most of the time those are INT in the NFL. Overall, I am still impress. I have my rankings of who the best will be in this draft. #1 Watkins #2 Robinson #3 Mack #4 Gilbert and #5 might just have to be Manziel.
Well everyone has their own analysis. I think Clowney's motivation issue will come back to haunt him in the end. I was a big Bortles fan, but looking at some stats, he threw a lot of come back routes in college. What I do love though, is that Bortles is willing to stay in the pocket and take the hit while delivering passes. Reminds me a lot of Big Ben. And Bridgewater, I think he's the safest pick of the QB's. His intelligence and hard working alone will assure he's successful in the NFL. But how I just ranked them, is what I predict will be their impact in the NFL. I'd like to hear yours.

Johnny had alot of problems in the NFL his arm wasnt the strongest, he wasnt very accurate, how are you throwing ducks at your NFL pro day this tells me alot of his power wasnt coming from his core, he was a running quarterback in college but he only ran about a 4.5 at best which is great if you're quarterback is a dual threat QB not for a running quarterback tho if a quarterback in the NFL was focused on being a wildcat qb ( imo opinion it would never work in the NFL ) he'd have to be at the very least in the 4.4s, alot of his passes in college were completed just because he had an enough time to wait and find an open receiver or because he scrambled and a receiver managed to get open, he's not going to pick apart a defense the way peyton manning Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers do and he's not fast enough to run all over a defense the way michael vick use to. He was very immature dude is a coke head literally, you can be a certain amout of jackass and be a successful NFL quarterback like Cam Newton, Jameis Winston, Brett Favre. But Johnny was just too much let the fame get to him. And to top it off he was on the Browns which never helps.

John Haver i spoke briefly about him not being able to pick apart a defense and i spoke about his throws and not generating power from his hips. Its no question he wasnt nfl material but im saying being on the worst team obviously didn't help him, never had talented receivers never had a RB his line could also do some work.

"Only" ran a 4.5? A 4.5 is fast as hell for a QB and fast enough for most positions. There's not that many QB's running faster than that. Heck if you run a 4.4 you're just under the peak of acceleration for football which is a 4.3. Off the top of my head RG3, Vick, are the only QB's in the 4.3 range . Newton, Tannehill, Luck, Wilson, Gabbert, Kaepernick are all in the area code of 4.5, 4.6. Of course it means more for some than others. Newton being built like a Edge Rusher, but running a 4.5 is very impressive.
Further breakdown. Passes 5yards or less 20. 5-10yds 17, 10-15yds 6, 15-20 8, 20-25 4, and 25 and over 10.that's 37-65 thrown under 10 yards. Times to watch for nfl throws that separate qbs that manziel failed to impress. 3:50, 4:05, 4:18 was a pick6, 5:02 was a pick. And 6:02. Any of manziel passes over thirty yards were rainbows averaging a whopping 4.9 seconds and under 48 yards traveled through air. All of this just doesn't translate to franchise to me let alone first rOund pick

A lot of those deep balls and some of those short passes were interceptions instead of having unguarded receivers they need to put corners in on receivers
You can never know if one pass is going to be an interception without the WRs not being covered, but it shouldn't matter, if he's putting the on a dime 95% of the time with uncovered receivers he will go ham in the NFL. Granted that he has to make the correct reads with the defenses and the corners I understand that, but we all have seen some of the decision making by Johnny Manziel, it's just amazing, he is just that good.
But look at the hang time on the deep balls that's enough time for a corner to get a good angle and pick the ball but I won't judge till I see him in his first NFL game

Sorry Johnny but today's nfl needs pocket passers tall accurate qbs that will stay in the pocket looking over the head of a 6 ft 3 defender and making throws to recievers that are in stride so the potential of the hit coming is less influential and damaging, a receiver running back to the ball or sideways on a scramble exposes him to being hurt more often
His footwork and his release time are fine, but even I could see problems in his accuracy. Several of his throws to the outside lacked zip or looked like they were thrown too far in front of or behind the receiver, causing the receiver to have to adjust to it instead of catching it in stride, a recipe for pass breakups, tackles before receivers can get yards after the catch or picks. Deep passes hung in the air a bit too. On the only deep throw where he dropped back, I don't think he drove it through enough and he didn't do the greatest job of shifting his weight. The backpedaling on a few of his throws is problematic as well. Pro days are pretty much worthless anyway, QBs can get away with poor placement on throws when there isn't anybody defending and people rarely notice. If he doesn't get a good offensive coordinator to refine his accuracy and his decision making, plus a half-decent o-line, he'll most likely be a bust.

It doesn't take a genius to see Manziel still needs work. He struggles on the deep ball, but that's not all he's only 5'11 most lineman in his face are 6'1 + with about 36"+ arm spans. He's way too over hyped and hasn't taken 1 snap in the NFL. Most college players don't even make the NFL and he will be playing against nothing but #1 NFL draft picks. Also, if you watch this video real closely he's easy to read on which area he will be throwing too. Manziel won't even be drafted to a team with a good defense and be expected to turn a losing team into a winning one.

Scrambling qbs increase the chances of bad throws and turnovers as we'll as injuries for the entire offensive lineup, defenders love hitting making it easier for them by leaving ur recievers to dry only will hurt ur chances for a healthy team if given the chance of a playoff run against the best of the league, it's entertaining to watch but it gambles everyone involved, a great offense starts from a QB that makes the best chances of success from smart decisions that's involve deception of an overly aggressive defense and can stay in the pocket making throws that will be over defenders heads . NFL defensive linemen are MUCH bigger, faster, and stronger. Johnny Manziel also seems to have some trouble keeping a decent spiral while on the run, or at least is inconsistent. He also had trouble with deeper throws. I think he can survive in the NFL, but he won't thrive.
