Not sure if it's a joke or not; but it's a method used by singers to attempt to hear their own voice properly -- try recording your voice and listen back to it, it doesn't sound the same as if you just listen to yourself speak. The intend here, is then, to hear his own voice better.
@@LostMill0000 Yeah, it’s especially common among bass singers (like John Bromley here), because the higher pitches carry out more, which can make you lose your own voice if you’re a bass, so a fair amount of bass singers hold one of their ears shut to hear their own voice.
@@shuckleberryfinn3017 In my experience as a bass singer, it's way harder to hear pitch changes than if you were singing melody or tenor. People watching can hear it, but you can't.
