Hammering and Welding the Austin-Healey 3000 Shroud
We're back on the Healey shroud. This video has a lot of banging going on. Wray has to adjust the opening for the grill and adjust the lower section of the shroud. He uses his caulking tool to arrange any minor details and then takes out the big ACME hammer to move the metal around. There are a few splits that he has to weld up to move forward with certain areas of the shroud. We are coming close to the end of the Shroud Saga, one more video to finalize any arrangement flaw and then it's all planishing from there.

Wray, it was very satisfying to watch all the improvements that were made in this video. I knew that area around the grille would be tricky, and you're definitely 'over the hump' with that now! For what it's worth, I prefer seeing the welding WITHOUT the blue filter that Mark sometimes uses.

Mr. Covell watches the same videos that I do. imagine that.
Have you also been watching that young guy, Toby Southan Metalcraft? He's a from the UK. He has been posting more videos lately and I think you might like him.

It's been incredible to watch the transformation of the shroud! You make a great point about having information. I wonder if it would be beneficial to hold off on final planishing until you have a fender and upper grille piece? Years ago an old hot rodder told me to mock up every component on a car before you commit to finishing anything, as even an insignificant part can create nightmares later on. His advice has helped to avoid a lot of potential disasters over the years, whether it be collision damage, restoration or hot rods. I still find myself getting over confident and lazy from time to time, which results in having to eat humble pie and do costly rework.

I agree totally! I do collision repair for living, and it really is much easier to do final assembly after paint etc, when you have been doing a proper mock up when doing bodywork. And it´s faster way overall I think, when You don´t have to fight with it at the end.

What seems to be missing is some vertical templates that span the grill insert opening, from up by the hood opening and down to the lowest part. Sorry, difficult to put this into words.
Keep up the good work, JIM

why not make one of your flexible patterns and use it on the damaged side? .. do they not work on an already formed panel that is damaged?

  • @nealnaz

From the same person you borrowed the hood, couldn't you also make an exact template from his front nose, in order to shape your nose piece? Or perhaps reach out to Jay Leno, for sending you a template. He may respond since he is a MA native and respects other restoration efforts.

Wondering, what if one made up a tool tip of delrin for an air hammer and used it in a similar fashion as you used your chisel like tool with the hammer. Could you gently slide it along across surfaces and into and out of corners as though you were molding clay? You wouldn't necessarily be pushing hard just finessing the metal with a smoothing motion?
Watch a stone carve and see what I am getting at, where as he is removing material you would be moving material?
With this method, you would not require an assistant to hold any dolly or backup, you wouldn't need to hold the punch and tap it with the hammer, just hold the air tool and the dolly. Then the art and craftsmanship comes into it!

Just a novice question but is it possible that where the grille sits it needs to go in but the bottom needs to come out? Essentially rotating the section?

    Great work as always guys!
One request, please don't speed up the welding action. There is a lot to learn from the technique that gets missed for inexperienced TIG welders when the footage is sped up.

    • @proshaper

It depends on the quality of the surface information. If you have a full surface to take flexible shape patterns and profile gauges and if you can hammer form on the surface you have the best of all worlds. Everybody always wants to know "how much to make one"? "how many hours to make one" ?
How accurate? What thickness metal? Everybody thinks that all body panels are created equal- they are not.

I watched all the other videos, where is the finished shroud? If you wonder why your viewers wander off and and you aren't getting top subscriber numbers, this could be a clue.

    • @proshaper
      @proshaper  2 года назад

My business is not RUclips, I have to make time for it. Most people want instantaneous results, they wander off because they want to see finished projects done in one video. If you time lapse it they want the details which get edited out. There are two audiences the majority that wants to be entertained in short 10 minute videos and another tiny audience that wants to hear and see every detail. There are not enough of the second audience to make it worth your while as a creator. I have given the problem of slow audience growth much thought and it looks like I might have to change directions.
