When asked why they made the movie, the directors responded "... We realized if we were going to make a film and ask an audience to give us that precious time, the only responsible thing to do in return was to blow their minds and change their lives forever. Or, at the very least, we were going to attempt that." I think they succeeded.
"In another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you." I've watched this movie sooo many times but this line still gets me. Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu and Michelle Yeoh all deserves an Oscar/Golden Globe.
I’ve never seen a movie that captures so perfectly what it’s like to have ADHD. Constantly pulled away to different worlds, timelines, possibilities., forgetting to live in and appreciate the moment and what you have. The 3 main characters perfectly represent the internal struggles of dealing with it, The yin/yang of the bagel and the googly eye as different perspectives on nihilism was just perfect. Just an absolute masterpiece.
The thing with there being an "alpha" version of Waymond is very intentional on the directors' part, as well as the fact his constant escalations & withholding of information gets Evelyn into more trouble than it helps. That's why the "I'm learning to fight like you" part is so important- Evelyn was already aggro like alpha!Waymond & that wasn't an approach that could or would help them overcome Jobu.
This movie is about generational trauma. The key to fixing your personal universe (aka life) is to address those issues by being open, aware, and honest. Evelyn is just stuck in survival mode at all times and until she gets stuck in this journey to save her daughter and in the process repairs her life; no longer stuck in survival mode (shown in the very end scene where she takes a moment to appreciate her family.) Nihilism vs Exitentialism is a major theme (nothing matters vs Everything matters).
It's a fast paced movie for the majority of the time but it still hammers the underlying tone which is family dynamic and generational trauma. TY for reacting to this!
...........in 48 years, this is the BEST movie I have ever seen! You might have to see it multiple times to catch what you might have missed the first time viewing it. You CANNOT look away - or you'll miss something!
Exactly my same feeling. In 56 years life the only movies which are similar, but definitely at a lower level, to this one are: La Strada, Forrest Gump, La Vita e Bella. That's to say my top three of all times, until now.
so much to process lol very over stimulating for the very first watch. id say that's the main reason we didn't full out cry or anything, i was just watching a dildo fight 3 minutes ago 😂 it was such an experience
I really, really did love everything about this movie. It absolutely blew my mind in a way I don't think a movie ever has. The hyped seem ridiculous, but for once it lived up to and passed those expectations.
Gotta figure that the pitch for this movie was along the lines of, "OK, how do we make an audience care about a conversation between two rocks?", and everything else followed from that.
Love this movie and i'm glad it got the recognition and praise it deserved, the movie itself and the casts. Everything about it is so well done. And it isn't just a good hilarious action movie, what i liked particularly more and why it became a masterpiece for me is the philosophical aspect of it. It tackles existentialism, nihilism and absurdism in a very good way. The duality of google eyes (white outside, black inside) and everything bagel (black outside, white inside) is like a yin-yang or the opposite approach about existentialism. Basically Joy is the nihilistic "nothing matters anyway, so might as well destroy everything" and Evelyn is like the optimistic "nothing matters anyway, so might as well enjoy things" which she learned from Waymond's mentality of absurdity (represented by googly eyes), the idea of enjoying life as it is.
To clarify the burner universe thing, Waymond mentions that she can go into the janitor's closet (without specifically telling her to do so). He then gives her instructions on what to do at the audit because he knew she wouldn't do it, but that created a nearby life path that she could easily jump to without drawing much attention.
fun fact the directors of this movie directed the music video for Turn Down for What. When I found that out..... it made so much sense lmao. Go watch it if you've never seen it As far as movies they also did Swiss Army Man... I have yet to see it but it also looks amazing/ridiculous
I had to watch this twice to really appreciate and understand this film! I really love this movie and will be watching it for a third !!! The complexity of mother and daughter relationships and family dynamics! ❤🤯
Man that gets me emotional! As a single dad of daughters , it hits hard , the feeling of a parent that jsut wants to protect my daughters with every ounce of my soul but trying to adapt to them growing up before my eyes with a baby and teens. ❤️💔
I’m so happy y’all reacted to this film, easily one of the best films to come out in a while! Made me feel everything 😂 the action choreography was amazing and the editing was *chefs kiss* and everyone’s performance was top tier! I’m glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen either of them cry during a reaction. They’re just not very sensitive people I guess? Still love them though. I cry every single time I watch this movie. Then laugh two seconds later. Such an incredible movie.
I laughed and cried and then as soon as the movie was over I searched for more and found you and laughed so hard all over again, you both are so funny with your reactions
this film is the culmination of everything I've loved about movies for the past seven decades, production, content and impact. I've enjoyed watching you watch 'The Boys' and now this. I'm never going to get over to patreon but there are two favorite films in particular I suggest to reactors I enjoy: an excellent crime caper: "The Asphalt Jungle" 1950; and the best mountain man adventure: "Jeremiah Johnson" 1972. (the balance of the audio/video for your reactions is the way it should be.)
when you said "id like to file our taxes under not guilty by reason of insanity" i had to pause because i was laughing so hard i choked on my dinner a little. that should be on a TShirt
It really is the best movie of all time. Teaching you that no matter what you do or don't do you've still done it in an infinite Multiverse and showing the struggle of nothing you do matters 😭 vs nothing you do matters 🥳. nihilism and absurdism and existentialism. Even the name Joy shows the conflict; all that matters to Evelyn is her Joy can mean two things at once. I love it so much.
The silly and absurd, as it pertains to real life. My mind wanders. Sometimes(often, actually) to fantasy. The way life could have been. But take the time to fix the present, as you would like it to be. That's my insight to EEAAO.
As for the editing, I prefer the old style over the bubbles, personally. It feels like watching a movie next to two friends, so they're always there. This felt more like an MTV bubble commentary. With that said it didn't really detract anything, y'all still were great to watch, and the extra stuff like that googly eyes made me laugh lol
One of my favorite silly things about this movie is that when they show the close-up of the "butt-plug" awards you can see JLC's character's name is Dierdre Beaubierdre... like the Name Game song.
I just realized that when Alpha GongGong showed up, everybody was still inside the IRS building, eventually entertin a big fancy office, probably belonging to the local chief of the IRS. When you are doing what you love, you'll never have to work another day of your life. The local head of the IRS has a mini-BDSM dungeon in a secret room behind his desk.
I always crack up when she busts out the trader Joe's organic ketchup. It's an acquired taste, but once you acquire it, by God, it is delicious. Evelyn definitely pink socked those guys.
What’s truly magical about this movie is that every aspect of it is nearly perfect. The Music!!! Holy shit the music, melodies would start be interrupted and resolved in other scenes. The cinematography!! That shot with fanny pack in Waymonds fight w the security guards? Every thing fires on all cylinders and even the emotional aspect was something that was a complete home run. There isnt one thing about this movie that was in anyway ‘bad’
I dont think Evelyn stabbed waymond on purpose, i think she was discovering new possibilities of what she could’ve done instead of what she did, and she probably accidentally stabbed waymond, and not thinking anything of it cause she’s realizing nothing matters, thats until she touches waymond again and finds that things do matter, even in moments that dont.
Fun fact. The Writer of this movie wound up getting diagnosed with ADHD when he wrote the script.... can you tell? When he was writing the script he pictured the lead with undiagnosed ADHD. So while doing research he was like "Shit. I think I got ADHD." And sure enough he was Diagnosed with ADHD.
dang bro, based on your reaction you obviously have already seen this movie and am keeping your sig other from reacting. Please stop reacting and let your other person react moving fwd.
Lmao, I still havent watched the vid and I'm going to assume. You always get confused by things on the easy understanding series you react to, so I'm actually scared to watch your reaction to this complex movie.
When asked why they made the movie, the directors responded "... "In another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you." I've watched this movie sooo many times but this line still gets me. Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu and Michelle Yeoh all deserves an Oscar/Golden Globe.
They all deserve the entire fuckin bagel! 🥯🌌
They all got their nominations too. ;)
Besides of Stephanie Hsu you were right. At least Jamie Lee Curtis got it, because she was also very good in this movie.

It's going to win best picture and best supporting actor Oscars almost for certain. Michelle Yeoh has a good shot at best actress.

I'm so happy you finally did this!!
That Bagel means suicide. It means giving up . It scares me, because it looks tasty..
And it's the yin to the yang of the googly eyes. Such a well-designed film...

I like to call it a movie that earns its quiet moments
This movie needs an Oscar because they promised and delivered exactly everything, everywhere, all at once. An absolute masterpiece

This the beginning of the Ke Huy Quanaissance.
IMO this movie is even better on a rewatch, since the 1st time is...a lot to process.

In case y’all didn’t know, the husband is the little gadget boy from goonies
I adore this movie. It's so ridiculous and over the top, that it shouldn't work. Somehow though, it works beautifully.

I've seen many reaction channels watch this movie, and so far, you two are the only ones who didn't cry.
it's also the only time I've heard someone mention when Waymond sits during the fight, there is no chair.

Watch another excellent movie of Michelle Yeoh, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, if you haven’t.
