F-16 Jet Engine Test At Full Afterburner In The Hush House
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 мар 2017
- An F-16 Fighting Falcon engine is tested in full afterburner at the Engine Test Cell Facility, commonly referred to as the "Hush House". The General Electric F110-GE-100 turbofan produces close to 29,000 pounds of static thrust in afterburner, which can propel the Fighting Falcon to approximately twice the speed of sound. The test was conducted at the Atlantic City Air National Guard Base in Egg Harbor Township, N.J. on January 31, 2017.

Retired F-16 engine troop here, and that's fucking funny!
Can we just give a moment to reflect on the strength of those ground bolts.
I was curious too, about how much load there is in the structure.
@@joequillun7790 Thrust is around 70kN, which is equivalent to a weight of 7000 kg. So its the same as hanging a couple cars in air, supported by few bolts.
For example, single shitty-grade (8.8) 20mm regular bolt can take 100 kN of shear. So around 4x 10mm bolts or single 20mm bolt would hold it. I think they used a few more bolts, though.
@@rpinola your calculation must be wrong somewhere. 2 x 10mm bolts will snap and this thing will be airborned

I'm pretty sure this building still stands. Respect to the men and women at the 177th FW. Fun fact, the FAA facility is nearby. They have a landing gear test facility. The building is huge. I've had the pleasure to see inside first hand. It incredible.

Edit: Yes this could be a first run up of the engine, or a run after maintenance, however it is possible that the atomized fuel didn't ignite properly on the first run of the igniter. And I got a few of the time stamps wrong, bleed doesn't stop assisting the engine until idle.

One of the crazyest was a guy named Dave Tothe(sp) he was pretty sharp, but terrably hyperactive, he was always doing pullups on anything he could hang off of. I didn't see him do this and I wonder if anyone did, but he clung to the edge of the exhaust tube while the an PW F100-100 was run up above Idle to part power. I don't think anyone could hang on to Mil but maybe Dave. He told me his arms hurt like hell after words. He was lucky to be alive, no one would servive getting blown down the exhaust tube.

What you don't get is how it feels to be near a jet a full mil. Your whole body is vibrating.
I tagged along on a dual engine highpower in iraq 2009. We jad the engine bay doors off the jet. Normal maintanance. However when you're standing under that jet and the pilot buries the throttle theres nothing like it anywhere else. The sheer power of steel and fire....
until you get to a rocket launch.... but that's like another category in itself lol
Barrington the closest I got was an f16 breaking the sound barrier 15-20 ft above my head when I was in egypt. The shock (as in energy, not the emotion) and pressure knocked me on my ass and I couldn't stand up for a good minute or two because of how disoriented and nauseous it made me. Like, I lost any semblance of a sense of balance and couldn't think straight at all.

ì was about 50 feet from a vampire jet when i was 4 years old. i'll never forget it. i'm 34 now awesome.
SR-71 engine in full afterburner is a trip. saw it once at beale.
Been there, done that. At several air bases. My company built the stands and I helped install them in Saudi and a couple US bases. Also installed F22 vectored thrust engine stands at Edwards Air Force Base.
I was lucky enough to do my engineering internship at GE aircraft engines and this was one of the engines I got to work on. One rotation was in the test cell and seeing these on a test rig is something you could never describe. Being only a few feet from one of these (separated by the cell wall of course) at 100% PLA and max after burner is likely the coolest experience of my life.
They would be running P&WF100 still but United Technology bought Praxair, and assumed liability for their deadly turbine blades.
what if i told you that if you work for the air force or navy, you'll get the chance to be even closer to full afterburner. look up catapults off carriers
Jaymik Patel I can only imagine working on the deck. I was in the Marine Corps, but never got close to an engine.
that damn thing must've been hot as hell, though, standing a few feet from it. I live only 30 miles southeast of Edwards Air Force Base, and they occasionally test and train pilots for them, including the new F-21's, I think, is what they are, and they are LOUD! They've produced some good sonic booms, too, which seems to be dwindling in occurrence. Used to be almost once or twice a week, with 10 or more passes, and I wouldn't flinch. Now you're lucky if they pass once a month with more than two passes per test or training, and I jump every time they pass by with even a small sonic boom.
They still use P&W in the F16's. The F16's used the F100-PW-200 at first but were changed to the F100-PW-220's in the early 90's. Even today they still have the -220's.

TDYs were fun since lacking a Hush House we tied down the jet for burner runs. You can stand just forward of the nozzle in full AB and feel the subsonic rumble via your whole body. Before HazMat mattered we found dumping oil and hydraulic juice waste containers into the plume makes pretty colors, but that was back when freezing frogs and waterbugs during LOX bottle servicing was the norm. @Ilovepotatos same thing bro
@Ilovepotatos i thought all jet engines operated on the premise that they take air in, superheat it with fuel in one chamber than compress the superheated air and focus it out the other end for thrust and that fighter jets just had a larger compression area for the air and a more tightly focused thrust vector?

Nirmit Official i could ve wrong but i think at the point where its spooling up its shoving so much air in that tunnel that it makes basicly a vacuum and air(easily seen with smoke) gets sucked in
The exhaust from the jet is high speed, low pressure air relative to the air in the room. As this stream of air rushes through the tunnel, it draws air from the room to compensate for the lower pressure (sort of "replacing" the air, if you like). This is evident by the smoke being pulled from the room.
