A little lesson for those of you pontificating about how needless the 3D-TVC nozzles are, they provide control and attitude authority that isn't confined within the specific performance envelope of the aircraft(Like the tendency to lose authority or stall at certain angles of attack/ speed...etc), it opens up the aircraft to a whole range of maneuvers that were impossible to achieve with conventional aircraft, like" kicking the tail out", so it's actually an extremely useful feature, albeit mechanically complex, the only aircraft in service anywhere in the world outside of Mig/Su family of aircraft to have TVC is the F-22 Raptor(in The raptors case, it's 2D). The F-22 is widely regarded to be the most capable Fighter in the world; the fact that it employs TVC has to point to some gained capability.
In fact that the SU-30mkm (russian made) able to install American made hardware on this thing is an unbelievable piece of engineering by the Malaysian airforce!
That is awesome. I like how the TV nozzles are independent and run in different directions when up or down - unlike the F-22. The Su-30 looks like a baddass. History is on America's side though.
+Bob Boberson The nozzles can only vector in two directions (one plane), as I think you're aware--they are "2D" rather than "3D" nozzles. It is true that they vector differentially to augment roll. The F-22's nozzles are perfectly capable of doing the same (except straight up and down), but its flight control system only uses them together to augment pitch. This is by choice, as no other US fighter has thrust vectoring (except for STOVL types, of course), since it is not favored by the US military. The F-22 only has vectoring because it was originally designed with it, it helps with stealth in level flight by minimizing elevon movement, and it reduces supersonic trim drag for supercruising. Otherwise, the F-22 really doesn't need thrust vectoring and wouldn't even have it. By the way, if you're familiar with the F-16 MATV/VISTA program, then you're aware that this is all by choice, not technological limitations. The US has true 3D multi-axis thrust vectoring technology, and even has a more advanced technology called "fluidic vectoring" that does not use moving parts, but the US military so far has had no use for it except for its limited use in the F-22. I suspect the real reason many Russian fighters have it is for helping make sales at airshows, while US fighters have the history you mention as their main selling point--an utterly lopsided combat record in their favor against Russian fighters.
Not many Planes do that. Only the newest and most advanced Fighter Jets put into Service have it. Older Models like the F-14, F-15, F-16, F-18, and even the new Eurofighter Typhoon, Rafale don't have it. Even the F-35 and F-22 don't have proper thrust vectoring (the F-35 dosen't at all) But it's common in rockets, that's correct, rather unusual thing for fighters.
In an era where virtually all air to air combat occurs with missiles fired from beyond visual range, we are left to speculate whether aircraft speed and agility for dogfights remain very relevant. The design of the F-35 and increasing use of drones suggest that many experts discount dogfight capabilities. Still, the Su-30 wins the 'sleek beauty' award - hands down. The F-35 may eventually prove to be more mission capable, but in comparison, it looks absolutely 'pedestrian'.
As the great pilot of our time Sergey Bogdan said: "There is not and will not be such an air battle where 90 or 100% of enemy aircraft will be hit at a distance of long-range combat. It is very good if the percentage of hitting targets is 70%, this will be the ideal hit percentage. But 30% of the planes will still pass and will be able to get closer to the enemy. In this case, the advantage of highly maneuverable aircraft is simply not disputed"
