I daily a MK7, wife has a 2024 Tiguan that still has the old screen but haptic steering wheel. I also have driven about a half dozen MK8s. They don't ruin the car but they are certainly a downgrade over the old buttons. Screen HVAC is a no-go for me from any brand; and I drive/interact with all the premiums regularly. They don't annoy me necessarily, but I have about 10,000 miles in her car (about 40,000 in mine) and I find myself wishing I had my buttons still. I have a few other small gremlins with the UI and missing features such as sunglass holders but, again, these do not ruin the car.
Exactly. Ask anyone that's actually used the car for longer than a test drive and the buttons are hardly ever an issue. In fact once you learn to operate the car you realise there are added benefits even (in being able to register light taps, hard taps and swipes separately).
The journalist will complain for anything just for the sake of it and they want the consumers to take their words for it,these people are old cry babies they want to feel important and as if they know better forgetting that consumers don't care about 97 percent of what they complain about and it doesn't even affect and bother the consumers. Once you see the random R stuck on the doors you can’t unsee it. First thing when I get mine is removing those. The R and GTI fender badges were way more cohesive.
I have a MK8 Gti and the haptic buttons are not a problem you get used to them in the 8.5. They are even harder to come on. You have to really press the buttons.

Still got mine apr stage 2 best car ive owned and driven and as fast as anything on the road to 60. I love the pearl white too. Only issue is the wastegate attached to turbo 7k fix and 2 water pumps in 50000k
As a loyal BMW fan (m140i, m135i, Z4 m40i) I must admit given the.....shall i say it, softer new m135 I'd struggle to justify not choosing a new Golf r over the m135 even with my badge loyalty. Just seems you get more bang for your buck in the Golf 🤷♂️

The upgraded exhausts are not standard on the R black edition. I have a 8.5 R on order as I didn’t want the all black 19” alloys. I went for the diamond cut 19”’s with performance pack. All black alloys do nothing for me.
I love my MK8 R. Have the top line with the Performance pack and uts an absolute beast and a comfortable daily driver. Joe would maybe love it more if it had a BMW badge... Great review 👏

5:50 I have never really understood leather seats. The only real reason to get leather in my view is if you have kids and don't want them to stain the seats; that is understandable. Apart from that however a nice cloth seat is just better than a leather seat in my opinion. As mentioned they don't get too hot or cold, they grip you better, and you don't have to maintain them with leather products.
If VW could do something about the leather on the seats stretching and wrinkling within five minutes I’d be genuinely interested. It looks cheap and seems like something that could be easily managed with manufacturing changes.
It’s a nice looking car. I love my A45S but the problem with that is, the lack of tuning options - VAG has just so much more tuning potential. Still a lot of money for a Golf R.

I've been religiously looking for videos on this thing just about every day & only this week I've started seeing more videos, apart from the initial press ones. Any idea on pricing for the USA? I can't imagine it'll be $55k US, (from the 43,7k conversion of euro) that would be absolutely insane.
Spec for spec the Audi is cheaper. Also because the depreciation is less on the Audi, if you finance it the monthly is cheaper. Factor in the better cabin, build quality, sound system and badge the Audi is the better buy.....which is why I got the S3 Vorsprung.
I've got one of these on order (US) and looking forward to taking delivery. Replacing my now 12 year old B8 S4 with this. Given the performance and everything included - it seems like a bargain at under 50k for one of these new.

Okay, better than the mk8. But, I don't know. I still think I'd take a Mk7 or 7.5. More tuning options, easier to get a hold of, and a heck of a lot cheaper even with low miles. Especially since the 7 and 7.5 have a manual option
The advancement in Four Wheel Drive technology with the ability to be very rear biased has almost made RWD redundant. As for FWD I just don’t see the attraction to it, that comes from someone who’s owned, what I feel, are some of the very best FWD cars ever like the Megane RS, Cupra 280, Edition 30 etc
I have a 2022 WRX Limited with a 6-speed manual and I can’t believe to say this but I’d be willing to give up the manual experience for a Golf R with this DSG and being a hatchback (USA). I gotta convince my wife 😂

Nice. I'm a bit weary of the M2 as my driving skills are a bit limited. I test drove the Golf R and the BMW m240i xdrive. I went for the BMW purely because it felt punchier and the fantastic B58 6 cylinder engine sold me.
I'll happily sacrifice a gas hood strut and engine cover that says "TSI" to get heated rear seats, rear climate control, a heated steering wheel and ambient lights that aren't just on the front doors. You have to ignore a lot of upgrades to just focus on the "cost cutting"

I own a Black Mk7 R, and love the thing. It is a high maintenance colour to keep pristine though. I don't see many black 7R's around to be honest, and even less black 7.5R's. I guess the colour was just not popular??.

I'd have one of these over an S3. The Golf gets the Magna rear diff which you can't get on the S3 and the Golf is still cheaper. I also don't particularly like the interior on the current S3; the old 8V model was much nicer.
I like the blacked out look. But, i think living with it ling term might be tough. Unless you have full PPF applied from day 1 its gonna end up looking like crap after a few years. Otherwise its just goona drive you insane keeping that paintwork looking good.
Needs a thicker rear sway bar, about 1° negative camber and 1° negative caster on the front, and she'd rotate much better. Also, Volkswagen GIVE US A STANKIN' MANUAL BACK!!!! I don't care about shifting fractional seconds! If I'm shifting a 6 speed manual that makes 450 horsepower, I don't care how fast your 320 horsepower DSG shifts.
Peculiar that the steering wheel still has the haptic buttons. I like the haptic buttons and I was disappointed to see VW remove them for the MK8.5 Is it just a US thing for the removal??
I wonder if the steering wheel is interchangeable between the 8 and 8.5 I want to pick up the newer model GTI when they come out but I much prefer the sleek look of the haptic wheel + functionality. It's not a deal breaker but I'd happily pay for a new steering wheel if that's the case (or maybe they could just swap them out)
Hey Joe how do you go fitting in the seats? I'm 6'6" and tried to sit in a golf R 7.5 and could not sit on the seat due to how narrow it was.. Are these bigger?
This might be the last version made of the Golf R. Remember they want to get rid of petrol engines. Especially high powered one's. They are already choking the 1.5 engine back to 116hp in this new Golf 8.5.
Depends on how important 60 hp, AWD grip, throttle oversteer, active dampers, more dynamic customization, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, etc, is to you? I mean, there’s no way you could duplicate that, aftermarket for $14k but why would you? A tuned GTI is fun, no doubt. But you’re not putting all that torque to the ground in turns or anything below 3rd gear anyway.

That’s a car you only buy if you have no imagination or don’t like cars.. The GTi Mk8 I had was always at the dealers, the faults were never ending and it was the worst car I’ve ever own. The basics were all wrong, the materials were cheap. Never again.

Haptic buttons really aren’t a problem. Had mine for a few years, multiple track days. It’s only journalists that seem to have a problem with them.

Swiping for the volume is sick and very fast, I have the polo gti with them and it’s all good!

Just to clarify, the Performance pack does not include the Akro exhaust or DCC in the UK as mentioned in the video.
Doesn't include that in Germany too. The CS however does include the Akra in the Performance pack.

I’m torn between this car and the bmw 330i, comfort is so important to me and some say the Golf R is more comfortable especially for a sports car.

How is the comfort, road and wind noise in this on scenic roads and regular motorway speeds (70mph) for long distance driving (like 5hrs+)?

Ventilated front seats, AWD that’s good for more than just a straight line, real carbon fiber interior (on some) to add a few more…

With 1ft rollout. My stock 8R done 4.29 to 100kmh without 1ft rollout. So even faster then in carwow

Almost all audi's with those new "square and blocky" screens and panels look God awful. The old set up from 2013 onwards was better.
The new S3 also comes with the diff.

The removal is in all the Golf range except for the R (maybe just for the R button). Customer opinions were against the haptic controls.

Is there a big enough jump from the GTI to justify the price on the R ? I would do a base GTI and a tune and be done with it.

Here in the USA the s3 and golf r are around the same price but with the dealer markups of the golf it ends up being more

Joe the haptic buttons in the 8.5 have had the sensitivity reduced. Now harder to switch on.
How can VW get rid of the manual in GTI and R sports cars. It is just ridiculous and makes both cars removed from my list of cars to get.
Then massive screens are a hazard and a massive danger they probs cause alot of accidents.. do you control that with out touching or looking at it... It's like a massive mobile phone but 10x more dangerous 😊

The GTi Mk8 I had was always at the dealers, the faults were never ending and it was the worst car I’ve ever own. The basics were all wrong, the materials were cheap.
