- Some thoughts on a 1997 (?) BMW R1100RT I picked up, had a few miles on it but rode OK, can't say I've ever been a big fan of these (I'm sure that's obvious from the vid.) but they sold enough of them so some people obviously like them. Personally I think the ST1100/1300 is a much better option but hey that's just my opinion
A few days ago I bought a 1998 R850RT-P in good shape, handles great, very smooth engine (only 70HP), very confortable to ride, nice spoked wheels... very happy with it.
Had looked at the Honda ST and the Kawi Concours, both with loyal fans just like this reviewer. But both also seemed too heavy, too mass-produced 'bland', and even the used ones were going for more money than the nearly pristine '96 BMW R1100RT I eventually found for ~$2K. IMHO these old 'oilhead' beemers have all the modern bells and whistles anyone could expect... heated grips, electric adj. windshield. Brembo brakes, ABS, great handling, gobs of power, etc.... still making 'em some of the best _values_ out there in used bikes these days (and I've sure been happy with mine)!.
Just looked at one yesterday. A 1998 R1100RT with 90K miles on it and needs a little work. In the neighborhood of $2K. Rode it around town. I am kind of on the fence for that vs an older HD Dyna. The Harley is probably cheaper and easier to work on.
I purchased one (2000) with 58000 miles. I absolutely love it. A huge step up from my starter bike (250cc cruiser)
You can take the lad out of Nottingham but you can't Nottingham out of the lad. Nice honest and truthful review
Funnily enough I attended University in Nottingham but I am actually from Cheshire old boy.
Dude I love your reviews, started watching them a couple years ago, you do an awesome job and I’m glad you don’t let the idiots that can’t deal with other opinions stop you. My only complaint is too much time between reviews!
Great overview mate. I had one as a winter bike for a while, daily rider. Brilliant front end and roadholding considering the size and weight of the thing. Owners chase their tails fixing the injection surging issue. Gearbox one of the heaviest feeling, slowest moving that I've used with a very vague feel. All your basic service items can be accessed without pulling plastics off which is handy. But mine ended up springing an oil leak from the output shaft seal on the back of the gearbox. That cool frameless design meant that the bike had to be stripped down to nothing if it was to be repaired so I let it go. The honda pan is a much better bike period.
To fix the surge all you do is by-pass the oxygen sensor, I've got the R1100 RS 1996 with 165,000 km on the clock & it's faultless
I have owned a couple of Pan's, 4 x FJRs but what is currently still in my garage a R1100RT my winter rat bike, a newish R1200RT and a new Vstrom 1050 and of all the bikes I most enjoy riding the R1100RT maybe because I don't have to worry about salted roads attacking it because I just cover it in ACF50 or XCF and clean it after the winter is over also its the got the best weather protection and you can't beat the telelever suspension, thanks for a great review.
Even if not some folks cuppa, it kinda tells 'ya what a tremendous value these used BMW oilheads are, when you can actually make more money parting 'em out!
How secure is the counter for kms or miles? ... here is a blue R1100RT with just 64.000km. Is that true? How secure is it protected to change the counter with fingers?
I might buy one, it's a 1997 and it's beat up a bit, 56,000 miles, some damage to fairings and mirrors and such. I took it for a spin and the engine runs and shifts fine, just needs some TLC. Is $600 a fair price?
Sure, there's plenty of used parts on eBay, just don't throw too much money at it.
i love my 96 r1100rt. and i love the blue on your bike
I've owned thee Honda V65 Sabres, the precursor to the ST. My V65 and I could stay ahead of my friend with an ST1100. The ST felt top heavy and cumbersome. Both it and the Concourse felt piggy to me. Somebody correct me but I thought that newer ST outweighs the RT by 80+ lbs not ~50. The RT handles light for it's size and weight. I prefer the sound of the RT over the whine of the ST or FJ, their sound is annoying to me. I would expect the Honda and Yamaha to be bullet proof in reliability. I'm picking up an R1100RT this week.
the red one of R1100RT had a broken fork and the air was full of fuel stench dring driving. Damned! wrong machine!
Yeah the KTM thing was the biggest marketing fail of all time next to New Coke.
It's not a choke,it's a fast idle device
Makes sense
@@lr882027 A choke restricts the air supply and richens the fuel air mixture,as it's fuel injected the engine control unit(ecu) does this automatically,If it's very cold the engine has to spin faster to overcome the drag of the increased viscosity of the oil,so all the lever does is open the throttle a bit
True enough but BMW still chose to print ‘Choke’ on the operating lever!
F650 Motor exploded, hahahaha 😂 briliant coment
You said it so casual, like you just bought yourself bag of chips.
I had one. Way too many annoying quirks to be enjoyable. The flashing ABS lights were the worst. I tried to like it, I really did. But the competitors made a better bike.
Guys! I have a serious question!
I'm looking for this bike.
BMW RT 1100 from 1996. What would be an approx. price for this?
I checked in this OTOMOTO app and I found one for 6900 PLN (Poland).
I don't know if it is too cheap or if the prices here devaluate faster.
Also, what is rhe seat height? I'm 1.82cm
Regards!!!
No idea on price mate, I'm 5"10
Here in Ireland they go for around 2000 Euro if the mileage is not too great .I am looking for a slightly newer one the R1050 RT .From what i have found out the seat height can be ajusted so your height should be fine .
Lets see how well a ST looks after 120K miles?
Well I've two two of 'em with 100K and 90K on, gimme another couple of years and I'll tell you.
@@lr882027 Here in England with wet weather, Japanese machines rot very quickly especially during winter when salt is used on our freezing roads.
@@johnrocker2986 No they dont, Honda are no worse than Bmws, BMW metal brake ends and bolts and fork legs dont hold up as nice as Honda from salty winters. Nearly impossible to find a winter used Rt1200 that's clean on bottom third of bike, st1300 streets ahead in that department.
@@checker3694 In England the only bikes to be seen during winter, BMW's
john rocker I think you have selective vision.
It hurts me to think this may have been parted out. A good bike in such great condition doesn't deserve to be euthenized :(
Nobody was buying that thing with 128,000 miles on it, even the dealer didn't want it in trade. It was sacrificed for the greater good of other R1100s - if used parts weren't around there is no way half of these would still be on the road due to the exorbitant spare parts costs.
Great review. Dee Dee and Lemmy would have loved it.
Lemmy was a big fan of BMWs, especially between 1939 and 1945
@@lr882027 tanks as well ...
@@lr882027 Lemmy from Motorhead?
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 Who else?- Lemmy from the fucking Spice Girls???
@@lr882027 😂
Lozenge?
You ever thought about exporting some to UK
Nah, looked at it, can't be done cost effectively on a small scale.
Why would you part out a beautiful, running BMW in good shape?
To make money.
@@lr882027 Money grubbing bastard.
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 Actually, nice benevolent bloke selling quality used motorcycle parts to allow normal folk to keep their BMW's on the road because they can"t afford Mr BMW's exorbitant prices. QED.
Nice. I from malaysia
Cool Colorado accent!
It's Nebraska dumb ass :)
....Whew
BMW macht nur ungern Werkstattarbeit, oder? Ich meine, an Motorrädern?!
Do u think it is a good idea to buy one now (model 2000) ?
They're cheap but I think there's better bikes out there.
Why not? I have a black one from 2000 for over a year. If maintained well its dropdead reliable. I am riding 30k plus km a year and it only sees the garage for new oil etc. I have put Tills injectors in it wich kills the KFR and gives it more torque from the bottom. Mine is a keeper. Had a concours 1400 and this bike had more power but downlow it did not much.
