  • The foundations for BMW's modern reputation were laid in the 1970's with large, expensive touring bikes such as the R100RT. Since then, models such as the GS, the K-series bikes and more recently, the S1000RR and RnineT seem to have taken the company in a different direction. Does that mean that BMW have abandoned the touring market altogether? Of course not; the touring bike is still important to the German manufacturer and the adoption of the new liquid-cooled boxer-twin has given the R1200RT a new lease of life.

I love the K1600, but I always feel like I'm one slip of the foot ready to lay her down. The R1200RT feels 400 lbs lighter (and is 300 lbs lighter) and does almost everything as well. The R1200RT is parked in my garage.

Great review of a fantastic bike, but in future please lose the unnecessary background music.

Nicely done, and good to see two different riders 'comparing notes'. Understood re: all the 'plastic', and no fan of the styling on any of the 'post-oilhead' 1200 RT's anyway, which often reminds me of one of the Transformers movies. Though in fairness, the 1200's are also nearly 100 lbs lighter than previous generations, with a lotta that weight-savings likely due to 'plastic'.

How could you miss out the Honda Pan European? Possibly the very best sports tourer out there!

Question? Does the boxer twin engine scrap the road, compared to the traditional engine inlines?

What is this RUclips Contributor OBESSION (can you hear me over the torturingly-repetitive pseudo-music) with sound during your talking? I love your personalites and info but the music is distracting and annoying.
