This is absolutely amazing on its own then when you think this was composed by a 14 year old it becomes even better. He actually composed his famous Op.3 No.2 prelude in c-sharp minor only 5 years later.
Another objection to Terryss... The performance RUINED this MASTERPIECE. Come on you cannot deny how great it is merely because Rachmaninoff wrote it when he was just a teenager. He is a real genius.
Rachmaninoff's growth as a composer from 14 to 18 was prodigious. Frankly, I see nothing here that I haven't seen in a dozen or so extremely talented composers of 14 here on RUclips. But 4 years later he was writing masterpieces like Prince Rostislav for full orchestra, masterfully orchestrated and worthy of a young Tchaikovsky. What can we attribute this miraculous growth to? He was in love from about 16 on. Perhaps the desire to compose something heartfelt for his Beloved drove him.
Yes, Schumann was driven to the depths and heights of desire and emotion for Clara Wieke ( a great pianist and composer in her own right) to write the great Fantasy in C to prove his worthiness as a suitor to Clara's father.
I suppose you mean that he was playing from the score, as opposed to reading it for the first time. Doing the latter for a studio recording would not make any sense unless it was a sort of experiment. Ever the best reader in the world would surely benefit from a few runs through of a piece before recording or performing it, no?
Sounds like Ogdon, who could sightread almost anything, did not spend much time on this nocturne. As a result the performance does not transcend the music. The piece is good, for a 14 year old, but nothing special, and not by far as good as what some other composers wrote as youngsters. The playing is adequate but without the TLC and conviction that would be needed had he wanted to make a real case for this work.
Badly played, ... am I blind or did I read Andante at the beginning? I heard something like an Allegretto Majestoso o.o .... in contrast to that, the so to say 'Allegro' should be Presto for this player... but he doesn't feel to increase the speed.
@juufa72 I'm 14 I couldn't do that for a millennial. I was born in December 7 1996, at least some one my age could listen to sophisticated music compose by 14 year old.
John ogdon just seems to blunder through any Rachmaninoff he plays... I mean come on, why not fix those obvious mistakes? No other pianist I've heard makes these same blunders...
Yea, I think this was probably recorded after one of Mr. Ogdon's famous glitterati soirees in London. Him and his wife were famous socialites in the Austin Powers Era of Mod London (early 1960's).....Groovy Baby!!! :P
SOMETHING STRANGE WITH THIS COMPOSITION. IT IS EITHER BY BRAHMS, ON AN OFF DAY. OR RACHMANINOV WAS ALSO OUT OF SORTS. IT SHOULD BE RELEGATED TO THE FIRE AND WHAT HAS IT TO DO WITH A NOCTURNE?
This is absolutely amazing on its own then when you think this was composed by a 14 year old it becomes even better. He actually composed his famous Op.3 No.2 prelude in c-sharp minor only 5 years later.
The performance is so bangy....
Well, this nocturne is trash anyway, so...
I bet Rachmaninov composed it in a couple of hours as a teenager.
I dont agree terryss

@@chloefu5475 it's trash compared to his others works
@@gabrielmondragon6308 not trash*
not as good as his latter works, sure, but this definitely isn't trash
I didn't know that Rachmaninov was writing nocturnes.
Very early work. It was made without an opus, in a series of three pieces.
Kamil Kosecki Composer he's write this when he was 14
@@hovnansevoyan6775 He apparently wasn't getting good sleep.
@Sam Farnsworth Yup. A slippery devil, and the highest level of genius. Man, he wrote some amazing stuff.
so rare to find this anywhere. thank you
aslanov yeahh
14 yrs old......how in the world did he compose pieces with such deep emotions?
Maybe this will sound shocking, but get this... Teenagers are capable of feeling emotions too! :0
Love this piece
Beautiful. I still cannot understand this was composed by a 14 year old child. Oh, wait, Rach? OK, now I perfectly understand!

In love with his cousin😨
great piece
Perfect.
Most beautiful nocturne ever! Rachmaninoff is my favorite composer. :)
Dude, Rachmaninoff is my favorite composer too!
I’m 15 and I will try write my first nocturne. Wish me luck. I’ll post it on yt
Yet another cool piece that looked like something I could actually play! ...until It got to the allegretto.
this is the most relatable thing i've ever read :D
Keep at it. It will get easier after a few months.
Not bad for a freshman in high school.....gawd!!!!
Interesting, not bad for 14 year old, but he got a lot better later on......(:))
I turn fourteen this year.
Challenge accepted.
So? Wheres the music?
@@pianosenzanima1 ahahah I was going to write the same
Still waiting
Its been 9 years
This guy is 22 rn
The performance from 2:20 is just trash. Ignored all the points Rachmaninoff wished to present in the score.
Agreed
Agreed. Check out Rodriguez’s version. Does it justice, in my opinion!
Damn...had to stop and check who else was like... nope. I'm no virtuoso but that sounded sloppier than stirring frito pie.
@@nickgur9502 Rodriguez's is imp the best performance of this piece
Magnánimo! Me estoy introduciendo a este mundo y creo que mi elección a sido buena...
It's a nocturne for God's sake not a battle scene theme :( Very poor performance
Ogden was probably sight-reading it.

Fancy Pants Liszt disagrees with you
I like this version better than the original polished sounding one.
aaaaaaah there it is
thanks
Prefere to play chopin´s nocturnes, that sheet music scares me too much
...👏👏👏!!!...😲

yes i agree. this recording leaves much to be desired and I'm surprised a "professional" would release a recording that was so....unpolished?

Hi you, a pianist's callin u for help : Can i have the sheet music of this ?! It's wonderful
Just search the name of the piece and write sheet music on Google.
Like Carl Tausig's early composition. Melodrama. It's chillin' like this is a calm night for russians hahahahhahah
Lol .. sorry but this is really a fail. He plays the Andante faster than the Allegro *facepalm* What about piano and forte? ..

@hailkayy you can't but everyone else can
Horrendous performance
