I am German and I don't want to justify anything. My gandparents talked about that time and especially the fact, that there were so many different reasons why someone chose the Nazis was pretty clear already from that. My motherly grandparents were poor and wanted food. Later they were hunted by the Nazis because they were devoted Christians and didn't want to fight in the war or support the Nazis with their inhuman acts. The mother of my fatherly grandpa was different though. She absolutely supported Hitler in everything he did, which still shocks me today. She even named my grandpa "Adolf". It's sometimes all more complicated in history than what people think.
In germany there is a saying " Das kriegst du für nen apfel und ein ei" = "you can get it for an apple and an egg" which has it's origin in this time. You could sell your house today and would be lucky to get an apple and an egg tomorrow for your money. that is how strong the inflation was.

I believe Hindenburg referred to Hitler as "That nasty little corporal" and I think the reason Hitler was able to gain power was due to the specific set of circumstances found in Germany at the time as well as the appeasement and apathy of some men along with the fear of what happened in the great war.
I remember when our teacher gave us roles to play as citizens, I got old military man who was out of work. He then explained Hitlers platform and the other options. Nothing put it in better perspective to the class as to WHY people would vote for Hitler. We understood.
Robert Carlyle as Hitler also caused some very uncomfortable and conflicting feelings with my friends during A level history lessons, we knew he was being Hitler, but we couldn't help but be attracted to him. Which I suppose sort of highlights just how charismatic Hitler was to the people of Germany.
Robert Carlyle looks menacing in his villainous roles and 'Hitler: Rise of evil' was no exception. He was also very good as the main villain Renard in the Bond movie 'The world is not enough'.
I was pretty sure the Empire in Star Wars was based off of the British Empire. Makes sense though, since Germany was the country with Storm (Shock) Troopers.

Really happy I’ve started watching this channel. I’ve always been more keen to science but it’s been refreshing to learn about so many of these historical events and reflect on them with a new lens, especially thinking about the last 4 years in the US. Keep up the great work !
A little tale about a German family during the 1930's and 1940's, because the Nazi party never had a majority in the German parlement (43% at most). A lot of Germans did not support the Nazi party. My grandmother was German and lived in Germany until 1950. I asked her about what her family thought about Hitler. She told me that her father had a great dislike of the Nazi party. Her father had also fought in WWI, having a splinter of a grenade in his leg for the rest of his life. My great-grandfather became an alcoholic due to pain and trauma (I believe a classic Shellshock example) and he could never support Hitler or WWII. My great-grandparents had seven children. The eldest had to go and fight in WWII and died there. The second eldest son defected the army when he was called to fight at the age of 18 and survived. And the second eldest daughter died because in the last months of the war, due to hunger and illness. The Nazi's demanded that people living close to boarders with Allied troops near them (in my grandmothers case, the Netherlands), had to move to a 'safe' location. This ment leaving almost everything and getting into transport to said location. When they got back, most of their house was damaged due to bombings.
@@LightgreenLP of course some were lying but even those that did support them often supported the promises of jobs and a return to glory. They hid their opposition to the treatment of Jewish people because it would put their own lives at risk. Not many people were actively supporting or fighting for the nazi party. George Lucas drew part of Star Wars story from WW1 and WW2 same as Tolkein. It is not a coincidence that the Empires elite soldiers are called Stormtroopers same as Germany's elite units from WW1
Hearing you talk briefly about Hitler Rise of Evil brought back great school memories when my history teacher used that film to educate us on Hitler’s rise to power. Nice to hear it receive some recognition
First of all, this is one of maybe 2 or 3 channels I've been enjoying to watch lately, solely because of the input you have on the videos you react to yourself. It's a refreshing change from the channels, that just watch the videos from start to end without having anything to add to the video. Second, thanks for not holding out on the second part of this series! It sometimes kills me when reactors start a 2 part series (or a series of any length for that matter) and hold on to the second/later parts for days/weeks, just when the wievers have gotten into the subject and are waiting for the story to end. Your channel has been amazing so far, the extra input you provide for the videos you react to and your general intelligence of history has been a remarkable addition to these videos you react to. Thanks for that!
You being a family guy fan just improves my general opinion of you and this channel 😁 I guess I forgot to add the mandatory video request. I'm not the first one to ask for this, but you'll love Extra History's series on Otto von Bismarck. You'll rarely see video series' based on anything that are as well done as their's are, and it'd be a great continuation to the WW1 series of theirs you did a while back. Again, cheers and keep up the great work!
Ah yes. The wonderful Robert Carlyle . I know him best from his roles in The Full Monty and The World is Not Enough from the late 90's. I hadn't seen his portrayal of Hitler until the pandemic, but I am glad I did.
I'm glad you watched (and commented on) these two videos by oversimplified. The questions how exactly the Nutsies were able to come to power is still hotly debated, even here in Germany. I am not sure if it is a game suitable for streaming or doing a Let's Play about, but if you are interested you might wanna have a look at "Through the darkest of times", an indy game published in january 202 in which the player tries to manage a small resistance group in Berlin during the Third Reich. The background of the "Machtergreifung" is also told and it really made me shiver...
Interesting bit about 2:21 Hitler’s part number was actually 555. The membership numbers started at 500 because the party wanted to appear much larger than they were.
Wow. You grew by over 100k subs in 3 months. For a channel like this (great content btw) that's pretty great. I just found you a couple of days ago and love your reaction videos. I am familiar with most of the channels you do videos of, and your knowledge and uncanny timing are just great additions to already solid historical takes.
It's wrong to say it created Nazi Germany though. It participated, along with the economic crisis of the 30s, the prexisting anti-jew opinions and the recent rise of fascism in Europe. Historically it already happened that other countries had to suffer from this kind of harsh treaties in the past (for example the treaty the germans imposed on the french in 1870, even the one against the Russians in 1917). Yet, it didn't create some proto-nazi countries. There are a lot of factors. And in defense of those german people from back then, it's not like anyone would have imagined what the nazis did toward the end of the war, they weren't exactly publicly boasting about it. Most people probably didn't know the most extreme aspects of it.
World War I basically I… World War I and it’s aftermath was the single biggest cataclysmic event in world history in the last 200 years. Almost everything else that has happened in the last hundred years has its roots in World War I., the rise of Bolshevism, the rise of fascism, the rise of America, the rise of Russia, the rise of China, the Cold War, Vietnam, struggles in the Middle East even islamic terrorism. It can all be linked back to World War I
@@xenotypos also, something in that I didn’t find out until quite recently is. One of the main reasons the ss even existed was to protect the Nazi government from a revolution by the German people. You don’t need a security force if the majority of people agree with you.
I don’t think it was the treaty of Versailles cos in 1929 Germany was starting to recover from the hyperinflation. It was the Great Depression that led to the rise of the nazis
@@xenotypos Nah, Versailles played a crucial role, and it can hardly be compared to other harsh treaties. The main reason: Except for a brief time in the beginning, when the Russians mobilized earlier, afaik, no enemy soldier really set a safe foot on German land. A defeat without being conquered in itself is already something highly unusual (ofc, seeing the bigger picture, it was the "best" option left for Germany, but people back then couldn't see the whole picture, as they only had access to German news outlets, and were told for four years that Germany was winning the war). And the second part: Usually, treaties and war conclusions either eliminated the country fully (like St. Germain did with Austria Hungary), or they left the defeated enemy with some sort of dignity (like the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars and the Franco-Prussian war), where they had to pay reparations that hurt, and maybe had to give up land. But Versailles basically made Germany a puppet to the "allies" in everything but name. They were not allowed their own industries to a natural extend, they were not even able to provide food to all their people when behaving according to the treaty, etc. So they were fully dependend on their former enemies (especially the US). Now take this combination: Since over 100 years prior in the Napoleonic wars, no enemy soldier has set foot on German land (the Austro-Prussian war was more or less a civil war at that point), for four years, people "knew" that the war was as good as won, then out of the blue (for everyone who had not served), Germany capitulates while mostly still in enemy territory, then they get served with full dependency on people that "have not beaten them", and finally, the enemy economy they were fully dependend on collapes and takes the shell of own economy with them. At that point, there were just two logical outcomes: Soviet style Communism, or some sort/variant of Fascism (in the end it was a combination of the worst of both radical worlds).
The reason why Palpatines and Hitlers rise to power are so similar is because it's meant to be. George Lucas got a lot of inspiration for the Galactic Empire from the third reich. Hell, the storm troopers sometimes even use props that are made out of WW2 German weapons. Or look at Darth Vader's helmet. Literally a German Stahlhelm (german military helmet of WW2)
Awesome as always. Have you had an opportunity to take a look at Time Ghost? They have a segment entitled between 2 wars, as the name implies is focused in the time between ww1 and ww2. Wonderful coverage of the effects of the Great War and the build-up to ww2.

I know it was last episode, and I apologize, but a bit of backstory that isn't mentioned is just how good Hitler's paintings were EXCEPT for one detail: none of his scenes had people in them. I'm not sure if it's because he couldn't draw people, but that tells me just how little he felt about his fellow people. His "idealized" world was one where there were beautiful buildings, beautiful landscapes, but no people. In art, everything is a decision. Even if the decision was early on, Hitler somewhere made the decision not to paint people, and that decision was made by how he viewed humanity.
12:25 Yea, Palpatine is basically designed as a sort of space Hitler and the Empire has a lot of style similarities to the 3rd Reich. Just look at the lower part of Vaders helmet for example. Or Stormtroopers. Or the colour scheme (Vader and some Officers black, Royal Guards red and Stormtroopers white). And other stuff I'm sure I forgot
All the actors for the Empire in the original three movies were all white men on purpose, with a shitty attitude towards other species "where are you taking that... thing", whilst the rebellion is much more diverse with women, black people, asians and of different alien species, to all to subconsciously drive home that: space nazis vs the rest of the world, feeling.

I find it really fascinating that, however ill advised they were, Germany continued to pay the reparations outlined in the Treaty of Versailles, and finally paid it off in October 2010; most likely long after all the officials involved had passed.

There is another reviewer who had his channel temporarily blocked and striked, b/c there were too many instances of that 'special symbol' showing. Not a criticism.......just a heads up. I had a relative in my family (now deceased) that never mentioned to any of us youngsters, that Germany had to pay massive reparations. The only thing she espoused til her dying day was that H -- was "Great for our country". One other comment she would sometimes make (whenever seeing later decades programs about the war........and she would most profoundly rail / rant / have outbursts in German) was to tell "us Americans" about the disappearance of ENTIRE families of Jews from various neighborhoods. When pressed on the subject and just how do you explain that the overwhelming response would always be, "Vhel (in their accented German) how were we supposed to know the Jews weren't simply moving b/c they wanted to be close to the factories where they worked". I don't completely buy the notion that this relative was all that 'brainwashed'. Whenever another family member would try to talk to them ab't what H-- had done all this person would do is turn their head and look the other way and refuse to talk about it anymore".

6:48 wait wasn't that the other way around? as far as i know germany first fell behind in payment, then the Ruhrgebiet was captured by france wich lead to the german goverment anouncing passive resistance in the ruhr gebiet. Since they needed to pay said resisstance, which was very expensive, they started to print a shitton of money, which lead to the inflation, which ended, when german councellor Stresemann canceld the passive resistance and cut the inflation by introducing the Rentenmark.

Currently in school and yea, I feel like I will always be interested in learning history in a fun way. And this channel helps me understand most situations in history that I don't get or isn't explained so that I wouldn't need help from anyone in class
@@inanotherwrld994 Perhaps ''Crash Course history'' is something for you as well. I really enjoyed that even though it's old by now.
i love re-watching these oversimplified videos because i remember the first time i started watching oversimplified/VTH i knew practically nothing and now like 2 years later i now understand everything due to school.
It's a privilege being able to watch these history videos again with you. I get to know more which i always wanted.
I discovered your WW2 series the other day and have binged all of you reaction videos except the Russian Revolution (thats up next). I really enjoy this stuff. Fun to learn about the small insights!
Welcome! Glad to have you.
We understood.
robert carlyle played hitler. he is a scottish actor who has also been in trainspoting, the full monty and 28 weeks later
@@SunnyMorningPancakes lol, thats because he's a good looking actor. hitler was ugly, inside and on the outside.
@@rivak98 see I disagree. Not about the Hitler part, but I genuinely don't view Robert Carlyle as particularly attractive. He's no Gregory Peck.
Robert Carlyle looks menacing in his villainous roles and 'Hitler: Rise of evil' was no exception. He was also very good as the main villain Renard in the Bond movie 'The world is not enough'.
Yeah, Star wars, and the Stormtroopers were based on ww2 Germany.
I was pretty sure the Empire in Star Wars was based off of the British Empire. Makes sense though, since Germany was the country with Storm (Shock) Troopers.
@@serathaevistille995 That is not the only thing though. Have you ever noticed that all the officials in the Empire were humans and not aliens. Then you have the fixation on wonderweapons and the huge ass authoritarianism.
@@Beertraps also officials in Empire were racists toward other races and blamed them for the clone wars. So is kinda similar to how Germany was with jews.
@@serathaevistille995 the Nazi's shocktrooper were based off the canadian soldier from WW1 as they were called Stormtrooper by the German soldier out of pure fear of the unwavering canadian charging their line. But the GE stormtrooper are indeed based off the Nazi's stormtrooper and I belive the rebels are based off the allies.
There's a big difference in that the ideology was actually believed in with Germany
Germany: * goes from territorial clusterf to Empire to democracy to dictatorship to democracy and soviet puppet state in less than 80 years*

@@ShuffleUpandDeal32 ahhhhhhh. That's why it looked so strange xD
Yeah i might have gotten confused with the german "Demokratie"
France went absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy to republic to totalitarian empire twice in just a few decades.
Plus the hundred days broke up the second absolute monarchy.
And now we are a democratic puppet state Russia and the USA own us
On gosh
Watched all these videos before. Now I'm enjoying watching them all again with your input.
That was a great story, thanks for sharing.
That so lie. Everyone in German support Nazi in 30s and 40s
Everyone said "we never supported the nazis" after the war, you're aware of that right?
@@LightgreenLP of course some were lying but even those that did support them often supported the promises of jobs and a return to glory. They hid their opposition to the treatment of Jewish people because it would put their own lives at risk. Not many people were actively supporting or fighting for the nazi party. They did it out of fear or for the love of their families and country
@@LightgreenLP I guess the important part is to what degree did someone support the nazis.
I love reacting to a historians perspective, I love oversimplified so this channel is definitely one of my favorites now
First of all, this is one of maybe 2 or 3 channels I've been enjoying to watch lately, solely because of the input you have on the videos you react to yourself.
Hey there! Thank you so much for the kind words, they mean a lot. Also, I love your profile picture, I am a big family guy fan
You being a family guy fan just improves my general opinion of you and this channel 😁
I guess I forgot to add the mandatory video request.
@@anenthran3832 Believe it or not, Bismarck by extra history is probably my most requested reaction on this channel. It will be coming soon
Only seen a few vids, very intrigued. Great channel so far looking forwards to more, def deserves more attention.
Thank you Jacob and welcome!
treaty of Versailles really changed the world.
I love history, maybe becoming history teacher or historian
Love this channel
@Rachid Attahiry El Ouahaby yeah you're right
Awesome as always. Have you had an opportunity to take a look at Time Ghost? They have a segment entitled between 2 wars, as the name implies is focused in the time between ww1 and ww2. Wonderful coverage of the effects of the Great War and the build-up to ww2.
Been watching some reactors to history videos and I'm so glad you actually take the time to fact check some things and add your own opinions or thoughts. Love your videos and I will always be one to click them as soon as they come up!
its fascinating that youtubr blocks oversimplifieds video in Germany but not this reaction
really nice video
So basically this is like star wars and these things are connected this way.
Communists: Separatists
Emergency degree: Emergency powers
Parlement arson: Naboo invasion and Padme’s assasinstion attempts.
Night of long knives: Order 66
Just wanna let you know your videos are fantastic the combination of having fun videos like oversimplified plus a knowledgeable historian like your self fill in the areas that were too vague is a fantastic combination. This is what reaction videos should be you add a lot of helpful info
Thank you for more oversimplified. I’m a Florida resident and would like to hear more info about Florida’s role in the civil war. Since the war didn’t really hit Florida directly there’s not much talk about it. Maybe you could do a series in where you talk about the major things that happened in each state during the Civil War.
Wow! That drawing is Odeonsplatz in Munich at 1:58 and it’s spot on!
It sure is. I was going to mention the same thing. I lived in Munich for three years (and am about to move back there) and I would be in Odeonsplatz just about every day.

Mentioning the wheelbarrow. It was said that if you bring money in a wheelbarrow to buy a loaf of bread the baker would keep the wheelbarrow instead of the money.

I love this channel. You are a true scholar of history and I am learning somthing new when I watch your videos. The fact that you made a Star Wars comparison is beautiful. I would like for you have a look at Extra History's Bismark or Cuba Missile Crisis series, both are good and I honestly think you will enjoy it.
Bismarck is one of the most common requests I get, so expect it soon. And thank you for the kind words.
Your reactions are not just reactions, they give you a bit more history, that even a history buff like me did not know. I really like your way of looking into details and explaining stuff even further. That is what a reaction should be like👍
12:22 I’ve always compared the way Palpatine and Hitler rose to power. And you are the first one I know that shares that thought with me :), nice vid!
In the least important note, the actor you are thinking of is Robert Carlyle who was also Bigbie in Trainspotting.
And Colonel Ives in Ravenous
I am currently studying to be a high school history teacher, and i absolutely love your videos!
There is a movie called 'The wave'. The movie is an excellent example of how people can be brainwashed just like Hitler did. We had to watch it when I was in high school. Still remember it today. Recommended!
the guy who played Hitler in the series is Robert Carlisle. He said in an interview I saw he'd resisted anything to do with the role for years because it's Hitler. As he'd become famous off the back of trainspotting where he played Francis Begby who was a physco character he didn't want an even worse character to replace Begby as who people associated him with. Especially when he wanted to do tv shows like once upon a time
I love all these videos and they are better than any reaction videos because he talks about the subject instead of just saying wow and cool.
My father told me a bit about the time of hyperinflation and how people would take baskets full of money to the store and if they got robbed they wouldn’t be mad about losing the money but about losing the basket
As a jew living in Israel I dodnt even knew this video existed thanks to u I could watch it and get your analysis as well. I'm really fascinated with hitler's story and how eventually let to ww2 and the death of millions. Such a sad and interesting story
Speaking to the Palpatine-Hitler connection, I wrote a junior or senior report on just that. And I also pointed out a few similarities between Bush and Anakin, specifically, "If you're not with us, you're against us", which, too be honest, wasn't the most subtle of references. I don't remember what my final grade on that paper was. Episode III came out my eighth grade year.
As a german, having to watch these videos only via reactiob channels, because they are blcked in Germany, really makes you think if people haven't learned anything...
I agree. I've also heard that denying that the Holocaust existed is a crime in, Germany. Is that true? Just curious.... as a school girl or school boy how much were you taught about the Holocaust and H --?
@@trojanette8345 Deniying the Holocaust can get you in Prison on repeat offences. Just last week a notorious 96 yr old Lady was sentenced to one year in Prison.

Thank you for helping me bettter understand the decisions of my ancestors.
I am german and statistically speaking a lot of my ancestors have supported the Nazis in some way. The 20% of the information I did not have yet and making all the connections really helped me deal with some guilt I had. In school the focus always was mostly on 1920-1990 which made the population back then seem somewhat evil.
You shouldn’t feel guilt honestly, as long as you learn from your ancestors and better yourself you can’t ever be in the wrong

13:45 poor dud he's one of those random victims feels bad man better luck next time
Fun Fact: To my knowledge the SA only had brown shirts because in the beginning when the party had little money, these were the cheapest to get and the kinda stuck with it afterwards... ^^
Bob Ross didn't paint people

Nice commentary as well.
I just stumbled on one of your videos for the first time yesterday and I like your videos.
12:25 I recall reading material that came out recently that really pushed the "who did it" question towards it actually being Communists.
@Wesley Maxfield Well, the Jedi were a religious order, so it isn't that farfetched
@@christianforsstrom2222 Yea, the Empire is human centric, meanwhile the rebellion is founded by multiple rebel cells from different species coming together
Probably more closely related to the night of the long knives.

@@ELVIS1975T A lot of it _is_ oversimplified, though. For example, the events leading up to WW1, not to mention the entire eastern front in WW2, which should have made up at least half of the video(s), but only received a couple minutes of attention.
@@chesschad81 Yes of course but it's still teaching a lot to many people (like me) who think they're knowledgeable
I find it really fascinating that, however ill advised they were, Germany continued to pay the reparations outlined in the Treaty of Versailles, and finally paid it off in October 2010; most likely long after all the officials involved had passed.
Just found your channel the other day. It's very entertaining. Keep up the good work!

Sabaton also has a song called "the rise of evil" which is long but very good.
11:11 actually, Hindenburg wasn't "reluctant", he refused several times and it wasn't because he was racist, but because he was worried Hitler would overthrow the government.
Which he did.
My mothers uncle was a part of the Hitler youth. He wrote a short short book/long article about his early life. He explains how embarressed he was after the war. He had been manipulated and brainwashed into all of the nazi things. He was only 17 when he joined some Panzer erzats abteilung. Luckily he had a long life after the war
Good for him!! I too have a German relative.
Here's what I wrote, above: "f you ever get the chance make sure you go through this video and blur or otherwise block out all the 'special symbols' that you see throughout the original video.
