  • Today, we're sitting down with Paul Pitts III, preacher and director of spiritual life at the Village Christian School in Los Angeles. Paul explains his personal testimony, how he began to come to the Lord in the sixth grade, and how family, church, and reading Scripture played important roles in his faith journey. He shares how the trajectory of his life changed from his goal of playing in the NFL to eventually attending seminary. We also discuss the authority and power of Scripture, dealing with doubts and temptations, the definition of "saints," the power of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, and more.

I really love Relatable, but as a Catholic, I want to address some points in this dialogue that just demonstrated how deeply there is a misunderstanding of Catholicism here. I wasn’t able to address every point, but I hope this might serve as an open door to the true Catholic perspective. I pray this might be helpful.
“Sainthood is something personally achieved.” Where does Catholic theology teach this? It does not. Saints become saints by the grace of God.
“Bestowed by the Church” No, the Church can recognize someone’s sainthood, but only God can bestow sainthood. Additionally, not every saint in Heaven is canonized by the Church-plenty go unknown/without formal recognition, but they are still saints. Also, there are plenty of “normal” saints, both formally canonized and not.
“Is your life perfectly holy?” Nope, and neither were the saints’ lives, and I’m sure they’d be the first to admit it (even the martyrs). The Church celebrates St. Paul, who called himself “chief among sinners.” Also, Paul Pitts criticizes the use of the word “perfectly,” but he misrepresents the Catholic view by creating that phrasing himself-he’s taking issue with his own non-Catholic quote.
“Paid in full-no purgatory needed.” This is a misunderstanding of Catholic teaching. Catholics fully agree that Christ paid for our sins in full on the cross. Purgatory is not because Christ’s sacrifice was insufficient, but because there are real temporal consequences of sin, and we must be fully purified before we can enter Heaven/be in the full presence of God (like Mr. Pitts said, we’re not perfect)-that said, purgatory requires more explanation than a RUclips comment can provide. Please consider consulting a Catholic resource to explain it more fully and test its validity.
“Declared righteous by faith alone, through grace alone, clothed with the very righteousness and holiness of Jesus” Jesus saves! Amen! Yet, faith without works is dead, and it is NOT by faith alone that we are saved. We are in a relationship with God! We are pursuing him, and as we grow closer to God we grow in holiness. This is inevitably a process of sanctification, not an instantaneous blast of perfection. Simultaneously, Mr. Pitts is criticizing Catholics because he believes that we see the Saint’s lives are perfect while also suggesting that we are all perfect to God, when clearly, God knows our sinfulness and our mistakes, but is filled with great love and mercy for us.
“It’s a gift, it’s a grace…we are progressively becoming in life/practice who we are in Christ” (paraphrase) Any “progress” on the journey towards Heaven is only through the grace of God, and the Catholic Church both recognizes this journey and the fact that it is only through God’s grace. We merely cooperate, and this too is only by God’s grace. Mr Pitts is simply creating division where there isn’t any. We would agree that we become saints through God’s grace:)
“Saints become saints by Catholic authority only once they’ve gone to Heaven.”Again, paraphrase) I already clarified that the Church does not “make” saints, but recognizes them. That’s why the Church only recognizes saints that have already died and gone to Heaven. They’re not going to speculate about who is really saved here while they’re here on Earth, even if they might appear to be examples of virtue, so they wait until Saints are in Heaven and we have confirmation of that fact (this is where miracles come into play).
“We certainly pray for each other” As many other commenters have mentioned. That’s the idea! We are the Church Militant asking members of the Church Triumphant to pray for us, just as we ask other members of the Church to pray for us here on Earth. They are alive in Christ! Where are you getting the idea that we stop praying for those on Earth once we are in Heaven? Please look to a Catholic resource to get a full picture of why the Church teaches that this is permissible and even beneficial.
*The comedian who attended Catholic school and talked about the long line of saints to approach before approaching God* This is a) a joke, b) not a good joke because it confuses people about the teachings of the Church, and c) it simply isn’t true that this represents Catholic teaching. If this is something that this woman truly believes, then that is a tragedy, because she misunderstands the Catholic faith. Catholicism teaches that God is always always always available to us, and no understanding Catholic would suggest otherwise.
All that to say, I am not an apologist, but I am a Catholic, and if you are confused about Catholicism or think that Catholicism seems problematic, please take the time to seek out a reputable Catholic resource (or seek productive Catholic/Protestant debates) to determine a position. Please do not listen to someone who though seemingly well-intentioned, is ultimately confused about even what Catholic beliefs are. The Church is controversial, and I believe that’s because either we’re the worst, most confused heretics, or the Catholic Church is the one true Church founded by Christ. After years of research and practice, I’m certain it’s the latter. I highly recommend anything by Scott Hahn, particularly Rome Sweet Home.

Protestants typically read 2 Timothy 3:16-17 out of context. When read in the context of the surrounding passages, one discovers that Paul’s reference to Scripture is only part of his exhortation that Timothy take as his guide Tradition and Scripture. The two verses immediately before it state: “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim. 3:14-15).
Paul tells Timothy to continue in what he has learned for two reasons: first, because he knows from whom he has learned it-Paul himself-and second, because he has been educated in the scriptures. The first of these is a direct appeal to apostolic tradition, the oral teaching which the apostle Paul had given Timothy. So Protestants must take 2 Timothy 3:16-17 out of context to arrive at the theory of sola scriptura. But when the passage is read in context, it becomes clear that it is teaching the importance of apostolic tradition!
The Bible denies that it is sufficient as the complete rule of faith. Paul says that much Christian teaching is to be found in the tradition which is handed down by word of mouth (2 Tim. 2:2). He instructs us to “stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter” (2 Thess. 2:15).

There is plenty in the Bible that Jesus explicitly says, that Protestants do not accept. It says that if you do not eat of the flesh of the Son of Man, there is no life in you, and at the last supper Jesus lifts up the bread and wine and says “this IS My Body, and this IS my blood” which is why the early church, and all Catholic, Orthodox, Coptic, and even Anglican, and Lutheran churches believe in the Eucharist, but western Protestants rejected these teachings as meaning that they are merely just symbolic. Also, in revelation’s it talks about God hearing the prayers of the Saints in heaven. On top of that, sola scriptura is not biblical. Explicitly in 2 Thessalonians it is said to hold to both sacred tradition, and sacred scripture. Also, Catholics do not believe there is salvation through the Saints, the Saints are alive in heaven, and members of the church, and together, with the church still on earth pray for us, and worship God alone. Also, asking for prayers from the Saints is not required in the Catholic Church, a member of the Catholic Church can absolutely go strait to Jesus in prayer, in fact, as a Catholic convert myself, that is how I choose to pray because I’m just not used to asking the Saints for prayer. Instead, I choose to learn about different Saints, and their lives, so that I can try to learn from their wisdom, and sometimes even their mistakes that they turned away from. I hope this helps bring a better understanding of what Catholics actually believe about the Saints, and that we definitely do not view them as giving us salvation in any way shape or form, only Jesus can do that. Peace to you.

No one comes to the Father, but by Christ. This doesn’t exclude lessor mediators who will lead others to Christ. If someone wants to become a Christian and approaches you and you lead them to Christ, have you done work as a mediator for Christ? Jesus doesn’t need others to do His work but He allows it. At the beginning of His ministry, He let’s a woman command us to “Do whatever He tells you” Jesus didn’t need her help.
To your second point, are those who have died in God’s grace in heaven? Are those in heaven dead? In Matthew 22 we see that God is not of the dead, but of the living. When Jesus spoke with Moses and Elijah in front of Peter, John, and James, was Jesus speaking to the dead?
The saints aren’t perfect but through their many faults lived holy lives. Their example can serve as a model for us and give hope for us to live our lives and that through our own faults, we may also get to heaven. Sometimes, by God’s will only, they can intercede on our behalf which is supported in scripture in Hebrews and Revelation and has been a Christian belief for thousands of years.
There is only so much that can be conveyed through a comment but I suggest Catholic Answers or Ascension Presents to get a deeper understanding on this topic. The Church has had two thousand years of teaching and you will find that she has put a lot of thought into it. With a little help from the Holy Spirit of course.
I should add that Catholics very regularly pray directly to our Father. With the prayer we conveniently call the Our Father. Others may know it as the Lord’s Prayer. Also forever giving glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Church doesn't "give" sainthood and there's not a single saint in history who has said they personally earned this by themselves. Look at any saint's writings or preaching, they all point to Jesus and adherently rely on Christ. The Church recognizes sainthood, but doesn't give it.

As a Catholic, I knew exactly what was coming when I saw the title. Unfortunately, I feel like your guests’ take on the saints and Catholic teaching was even less informed that what we usually hear. My mouth dropped open when I realized he was conflating saints and canonized saints as though the Catholic Church teaches that only those that have gone through the canonization process are in heaven, as though you have to be voted in by the hierarchy. In addition, you can read any of the stories of the saints- and of them!- and you will find that not a single one credits their own works for anything and neither do the Catholics who look to them as an example. They were completely devoted to Jesus. Many other commenters have tackled refuting these faulty arguments, but I came to say this: I am a lifelong Catholic. I have 20 years of Catholic education under my belt. I have a degree in theology from a Catholic university. Not one time did I ever have a teacher, priest, youth leader etc. disparage Protestants, or refer to them as anything other than our brothers and sisters in Christ. We grew up believing that Protestants are our brothers and sister Christians. Period. In fact, in college I took a class on Protestantism, where we had to do a deep dive into a Protestant denomination, attend their services and learn what they believe. I am routinely floored by the unwillingness of Protestant commentators to rely on anything other than their own faulty understanding of Catholicism to inform the things they say about Catholics. You brought a guest on to discuss Catholic doctrine who does not know anything about Catholic doctrine, has no respect for it, and did not do his homework. I’ve seen one Catholic guest on your show, and you issued a disclaimer that she was Catholic before she spoke about her faith. I have been a long time listener of your show, and not once have I heard you acknowledge Catholics as your brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s very sad.

This! I really like Allie Beth, but any time I’ve seen her approach the Catholic faith, it seems as though she feels that it is not truly part of the Christian faith. Also, Roman Catholic’s are not the only Christians who believe these things. Eastern Orthodox, Coptic, Asian Orthodox, and even Anglican and Lutheran churches believe many of these things. I’ve tried answer some comments here with charity about what we as Catholics actually believe, but there is so much miss information being stated, and as a mother to 4 young children, it would be impossible for me to reply to each misinformed comment in a way that affectively communicates what the Catholic Church truly teaches and believes.

Moreover, 2 Corinthians 5:1-9 states that man dies once, and faces judgement after that. The triune God hears our prayers through His omnipresence and omnipotence because He is God. Humans do not have these traits, and therefore are unable to hear the prayers from people in this world

The saints are our friends who have run the race and remained faithful despite adversity until their last breath. When I pray, it is like a friendship and just as real as being face to face sharing the depths of my soul with a close living friend. Yes, they have died, but their souls have been raised and are united to Christ. Their bodies will be resurrected when Christ comes again. Those faithful to Christ will all be one. There is no competition. We are united in our faith in Christ, we all worship Him alone. Strengthening one another and having charitable relationships with those alive on earth and those alive in heaven is not threatening to the perfection and adoration due to God. Prayer is by definition the lifting of our minds and hearts to God. If you think the saints in heaven are trying to point us to anyone else but God, you may be profoundly misunderstanding their role.

The thing about the saints, those still living here on earth, and the saints that have passed into eternity, is that we are all human. Though the ones who are in eternity are awaiting their new bodies. Praying for one another is encouraging, and healing (James 5:16). But praying to deceased saints is not praying for one another. We don’t know what they are thinking, and they are not our intercessor to the Father, only Jesus is (Hebrews 7:25) Plus, as humans, we are not all knowing, or omnipresent, and may not be able to pray for all the requests that come our way. BUT, going to the Father, in Jesus name, we know that He hears us, and knows what we need before a word leaves our lips.

@@z.s.r.h Actually, yeah! As Catholics, we do not believe the Bible alone is sufficient, we actually believe you need a Church teaching authority that is equally as important as the Bible. There is so much in the Bible that can not easily be transferable to today I.e. deciding whether certain practices in our culture today are moral, like IVF or Birth control (as it occurs today) for two easy examples. It is really great that we have an authority who has really studied these topics and the theology to decide whether these things are acceptable or not!
The Christian Church obviously continued after what was just in the Bible, so understanding the history of our Church and how our faith was passed on through the generations can really help us in our Christian walks today!
But back to the saints, each of them can help us be brought closer to Christ because they 1.) are people who have followed Christs example in their own lives on earth, so we can be inspired by them to follow Christ in the ways they did…it’s similar to be inspired by someone sharing their testimony. And 2.) in terms of asking for their prayers (first of all, I get that even the idea of praying to ppl who are not God, who have passed can seem really weird) it is good to think of these people as brothers and sisters surrounding God in heaven, but even more than that, we believe they are in complete union with Him! Therefore praying and asking for their help, is another way of growing closer to God.
I know I’m explaining a lot here, and I get how it can be quite foreign! But I recommend looking at places like Catholisanswers, EWTN, Trent Horn, or even our Catholic Catechism to understand more!

Saint are more alive in Heaven than we are on Earth. They’re with God! Second, asking for someone’s intercession is not the same as saying they’re they saved the world. I thought this podcast was disappointing, because you didn’t discuss actual Catholic positions. This was more of a “why protestants feel like we shouldn’t pray to saints” rather than a “here’s why you objectively shouldn’t pray to saints. Allie, after the talk with Farmer I thought you needed to know the Catholic perspective a lot more before critiquing it.

But if they're dead how are you fellowshipping with them?
Why do you have saints that rule over certain things/geographical areas/ body parts/ health issues?
I have a LOT of catholic friends and family members and I've always wanted to ask this but do not want to offend
Many will put idols of these saints in different places in their homes, go to places in south America/ Mexico to visit certain saints to pray to them for certain things.
How can they pray for you if they're dead?
The Bible says we lay sleep in the grave knowing nothing when we die until Jesus returns.
Are you saying these saints are like Enoch? Have been taken up by Christ and have no Earthly body?
If these people are dead in the ground... how are they praying for you?

Thank you for a beautiful interview! When Jesus died on the cross, the curtain in the temple was rent in two. That curtain divided the holy of holies which previously only the priests could enter. That was a sign from God that now we no longer need a priest or other human to intercede for us, we can now go directly to God’s throne of grace because of Jesus’ sacrifice. He is our all sufficient mediator that’s why we pray in Jesus name. Thank you Jesus!

Actually hes quite dry like all Protestant pastors, not inspiring at all. Also, he is misinformed about wgmhat Catholics believe regarding the word Saint.
The term “saint” is used in multiple senses, even in Scripture.
The term “saint” (Hebrew, qadosh; Aramaic, qaddish; Greek, hagios; Latin, sanctus) means “holy one.” Anyone who is in some sense holy or sanctified is in that sense a saint. This leads to many uses of the term in Scripture, though this is partially masked because English translators sometimes render the word as “saint” and sometimes as “holy one.”
The Israelites were a people holy to God (Lev. 20:26), so the Old Testament describes them as saints (Ps. 34:9; Dan. 7:18, 8:24). Thus, Paul tells Gentile Christians that they have become fellow citizens “with the saints” (Eph. 2:19).
Christians are also holy to God (1 Peter 1:16), so the New Testament often refers to them as saints (2 Cor. 1:1, Eph. 1:1, Phil. 1:1). The Catholic Church acknowledges this usage. After reviewing various passages in the New Testament that refer to Christians as saints, John Paul II noted, “All these cases refer to Christians, or to the faithful, that is, to the brethren who have received the Holy Spirit” (General Audience, August 16, 1989).
Jewish people were sanctified by their participation in the Mosaic Covenant, and Christians are sanctified by their participation in the New Covenant of Christ, so this represents two different forms of sanctification or sainthood. There are others.
Thus the holy angels are also referred to as saints (Ps. 89:6, 8; Dan. 4:13, 17, 23, 8:13). In popular speech, a person of notable holiness is often referred to as a saint, and we find this usage in the Bible as well (cf. Isa. 4:3-4, Matt. 27:52-53). Very surprisingly for English speakers, Jesus is described as the Saint or Holy One of God (Mark 1:24; Luke 4:34; John 6:67-69), and God is described as the Saint or Holy One of Israel (Ps. 71:22, 78:41, 89:18; Is. 1:4; Jer. 50:29).

I want to thank all the Roman Catholic people that explained about the Virgin Mary and their relationship with Saints. I am Protestant, Lutheran Missouri-Synod. I have discussed this with my Roman Catholic friends and although they did a fine job.. you all helped it sink in.. so thank you.
That being said my opinion is that if you grow up Protestant you tend to hold those beliefs as they are ingrained in you. Unless of course you want to embrace being Catholic.
One example that separates my denomination from other Protestant denominations is the idea of the Rapture. I believe in one second coming and that’s it. Not a second coming and then another coming. Another is the Eucharist which is the body and blood of our Lord for forgiveness of sins and commanded by Jesus. A solemn celebration not taken lightly. I was uncomfortable with churches that hand out crackers and juice to all.
But my point is besides my thanks is that it can be difficult to wrap your mind around ideologies that are foreign to the church you were brought up in.. this is just my idea however right or not so right. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The issue with your response is that you're placing all Protestants as monolithic. What you said is a complete generalization. Maybe you need better Protestant friends to defend their faith. Also, not all Protestants have grown up in their faith and been "ingrained" in their beliefs. Interesting choice of words, as if Catholics have not been "ingrained." For instance, in Latin America, it has been ingrained in them to be Catholic ever since the Spaniards colonized America and forced Indigenous people to turn to Catholicism. If they didn't, they were annihilated. Moving forward, many have been Catholics and then turned away from it, too. So, the "ingrained" idea doesn't fit all situations. Most protestants have been secular people first, too. Also, you fail to see that many churches have gone astray; even Catholics have issues with the current Pope. Lastly, the church is us, not a building or a demonation. It's our job to find the truth, not defend a particular religion or church because any could have gone astray. It seems you have a preference toward Catholics, and that's fine. But that also means you have biases and generaliztions, and it shows it your response.

I do not get personally offended by differing beliefs and while I think Rev Pitts is not understanding Catholic theology, I don’t get upset about it.
But to hear you say that Christ “repudiates” his special relationship with His mother is heartbreaking. No on can love Mary more than Jesus himself. And He is our omnipotent creator who isn’t perturbed or irritated when we also honor her. There is no comparison. He is God and she is not. They are not in competition.

Within the first minute of the guest discussing Catholicism, there were major issues that told me this wasn't going to be a serious discussion:
    1) He called Catholics fellow image bearers of God. Muslims, Satanists and every other person is a fellow image bearer. What he didn't call us is fellow children of God, or fellow Christians. Any person who considers the only Christians in the West prior to the Reformation non-Christians is hard to take seriously.
    2) He says that discussions with Catholics aren't centered on God's Word, but then defines God's Word as exclusively the Scriptures. This is a strawman that fails to acknowledge the Catholic view that God's Word is both Scripture, or His written Word, AND Sacred Tradition, or His orally passed on Word. Protestants removed the deuterocanonical books, threw out Sacred Tradition, redefined "God's Word" and then criticize Catholics by their new standard.
    3) He conflates the Catholic definition of saints with canonized saints. Obviously the vast majority of saints aren't canonized. To imply that Catholics believe the Pope must sign off on each person who enters heaven is extremely misleading.
I'll keep watching, but this is really bad faith argumentation only a minute in. It seems like this is one topic Allie struggles to be objective with.

Why did Jesus give the Apostles the authority to forgive sins in John 20:23? It's the first thing He did after appearing to them post-Resurrection. Why did James 5:16 tell us to confess our sins to one another, right after James tells us to call for a Presbyter if anyone has committed sins, and then they will be forgiven? This isn't even getting into the Patristics. Your stance is unironically that if any person holds to the views of sin espoused by the early Church and every Christian prior to the past few hundred years, they aren't actually a Christian.
It's not that Catholics are trusting someone other than Jesus - We trust the authority He instituted, which is currently vested in the successors to the Apostles. As Jesus said of the Apostles, "Whoever listens to you listens to Me". (Luke 10:16)

Also Allie, have you ever had friends pray for you? Asked your parents or friends to pray for you?? Why? You think more people praying is strong? Prayer of a righteous person has great power? Why would you do that when you have to go only directly to Jesus? I am sorry but you protestants are blinded by repeating out of the context scriptures over and over again. Also Mary is worthless to you, is your mother worthless to you? I am grieved to see that this man will teach Gospel to others, that he has aspiration to lead other believers. Us Catholics go directly to Jesus but also ask for intercession to those righteous persons who received so much grace and gifts from God to become Saints. You think God given gifts bear no strength to interceede? That he chose people to bestow these gifts upon them for no reason?

Most of these venerated saints, as well as many Protestant missionaries and martyrs, were walking, while on earth, in a level of intimacy with God that we all should strive for. They are holy examples for us to emulate. Like Paul says, follow me as I follow Christ.
Unfortunately, I haven't found much of a living example in my own life to follow outside of people I've read about. My husband and I hold each other up, but it's tough to find a good church where people actually are devoted to Christ above all else.

Thomas doubted he had risen and he didn't hesitate to come and really show him. I can't imagine how Thomas must have felt after that. Many of us doubt more as adults than as children. That's probably why it's important for children to know Jesus when they are little. Children believe easily with trust when they have a great relationship already with their parents and siblings. Jesus also said that we are to come to him like that of a child. Children are vulnerable and dependent on their parents.
