    That painting on the bottom right peaking through the bars of the easel is throwing me off. lmao Wonderful video, I really enjoyed it! Both of you are really talented.

    This is great! I particularly admire the patience of the wee chap at the bottom right. He's transfixed!

    Thank you Ewan and Michael, I enjoyed watching you work while I sat by the fire this dark evening and Storm Henry passed by. I liked that you go to the lengths of posting your work, and the comments going back and forth, and observing how the portraits acquire form and depth. The cat looked pleased to be included.

    I'm guessing she will take the right one home... Capturing the best parts of a face and not emphasizing the not so nice is a true gift! Beautiful model!

    The one on the right looks more painterly but I can see the likeness in both (perhaps more so in the left one). Well done. I can only dream of doing this. It was fascinating to watch. Thank you. The cat was funny though.

    Thank you both for a great video and agree with 'Virtual Brian's comments, I also feel the artist on the left had two distinct disadvantages, first and foremost, painting with the model on the Wrong Side i.e. A valuable golden rule is:- Right handed, keep subject on left and if you are left handed, keep subject on right. This may seem trivial, but experience has taught me (and hundreds of artists) is is not! The other is, acrylic verses oil and for the blending process alone, they are a world apart. Oil, by far is the easiest medium to work with, like watercolour, you can wait and watch it work itself, which does not happen in acrylic and as wonderful as acrylic is, without the artist attention, the painting will remain static.

    A bit too much talking, but I really like the sped-up parts where you can see the magic of brushstrokes eventually putting together a cohesive image! Also, I really like that there are two different approaches to check out, and the positioning of the model and the 2 canvasses was really ideal! Thank you for sharing! More, please!

    Great video, thanks for sharing. You can really tell the difference in painting styles. The artist on the right really has made many more strokes on his painting making it look a bit muddy. Also the proportions are a bit off. The artist on the right has focused more on proper proportions and has made many fewer brush strokes. The result is a better/more accurate painting on the right. Again, thanks for sharing. So many things to think about and learn from.

    • @virtualbrian
      @virtualbrian 7 лет назад +4

      Oops, the artist on the LEFT used more brush strokes resulting in an overworked, muddy and inaccurate painting. Artist on the RIGHT used fewer strokes that were more thoughtful resulting in a more accurate and better painting. In my opinion. Great video though.

    You should look up measuring techniques there are many. Comparative measurement for scaling up is one that's well known and part of the academic process from the old atelier method.....

    If you have these kind of lighting conditions you have to use what you know instead of what you see

    Por lo visto no conocen a John Singer Sargent, una leve recorrida por un libro que tiene imagenes de sus retratos, les daria al menos, respeto por la modelo.

    i think it comes down to whether your sitter is a model or a client.. if it's a model being paid to sit then it's really up to the artist to do whatever they want. however, i'd imagine the vast majority of traditional portraits are commissions, where the "flatter" rule should be taken seriously.. obviously men can't be expected to climb inside the mind of a woman, but seems like it should go without saying that a woman doesn't want to look tired, older, sadder, etc. probably the easiest way to think of it: is this something a woman, or her husband, parents, children, etc, (whoever is paying), going to want to look at and feel good about, day in, day out, for the rest of their lives? of course a subject should be instantly recognizable to their loved ones, but i think the goal should be to "idealize" them as they would appear on their BEST day, (well rested, perfect angle, perfect lighting, etc). ewan's portrait reasonably checks every box.. michael's on the other hand...not so much.

    "blurring the eyes” I was thinking they should do that then he suggested it..ha. BTW How long did this lady have to sit there¿ She looked ticked off at the end!

    Mike certainly did not try to flatter the model.. she looks tired and sick.. the one on the right looks very natural and softer.. Not beautiful at all though.. that poor model is lovely!!!

    Yeah, I agree with the comment below. Acrylic man was way too fussy. If you've ever studied Sargent he uses a brush stroke to make a crease, a collar, or an eye lid. The acrylic artist took way too long fussing over detail and he still got the proportions wrong. His painting of the model ended up looking like a tired hag whereas the guy doing the oil used fewer strokes, a loser style and she ended up with a dignity and the beauty she really possesses. It has nothing to do with acrylic vs oil, it has to do with technique and proportion. Over a year ago so I doubt anyone will read this anyway. Fun to watch. Thanks for the art.
