What you said about process and style at the 17min mark is easily the smartest thing I've ever heard anyone say. You are a smart person. Thank you for sharing your viewpoint.
Your commentary and structure of your video is exceptional! I can imagine how much time it took to create this, thank you so much! I can’t wait for more videos!
Cynthia, thank you for your awesome videos. As someone who is very new to oil painting and not having much for artistic experience all of your videos have hit home with me and really given me some confidence about my own art. To know that artists as talented as you and hearing your struggles and how you worked through them have really helped me. Thank you! Can’t wait to see more.
This is by far one of the best “tutorials” I have ever watched. I have seen dozens, perhaps hundreds. You have a gift in delivering to your viewers (aside from your obvious painting talent) I have now subscribed, liked and shared and cannot wait to see more of your work! Glad that I came across your channel. Cheers!
This video was immensely helpful. I loved how in-depth your commentary was (the comment about the dodge tool made me have an epiphany), please do more of these!
Wonderful! I really like how your traditional brushwork translates into your digital works. It's something I'm still struggling with, so it makes me want to paint even more. Your videos add up to that feeling, thank you!
I loved your comment about orderly palettes! My palette is orderly and I do enjoy spreadsheets ... mostly creating the organizational process ... and yes, my house is clean thanks to my Roomba!
awesome video, thank you so much for this, it's really helpful to see your palette and listen to your explanations and following your thoughts. I am still a noob with oils, but this made me confident and actually learn stuff, that I didn't knew before :)
I'm totally inspired to paint right now, thank you! I find that though I get inspired to do art while watching any type of art, there's something about watching someone oil paint that's extra motivating. Anyway, I really enjoyed getting the insight into your process. It's neat seeing all the different perspectives and techniques each artist has. Not to mention informative. This video didn't disappoint.
Totally awesome instructional video, I love the speed of the time-lapse, and comment.... you're slowing down just at the right time for some of the detail - well done!!!
I've just discovered this channel. Excellent tutorial. You won me over with the comment about the messy rag and the neat studios/houses. Really fun watching your process.
OMG that was so inspiring. I haven’t picked up a brush in a few years but I am dying to get back to painting! Your techniques are very easy to understand and you did a great job of articulating how opaque and transparent colors work on a painting. I loved this!
Excellent Alla Prima demo! Love the way you handle and push the medium loaded paint around. As a super careful "layer" builder, this has inspired me to be brave and try the straight on approach, thank you!.
Cynthia.. you're amazing and I have loved your art for forever!!!! Please keep making more videos! They really motivate me to keep making art and not to get frustrated. I would love to see how you make some of you larger, more fantastic paintings. Love ya, keep it up! :)
Thanks for great and applicable tips, I was doing a painting and was little to quick to be done, but now calmed myself down and leaving the canvas for the day and will resume tomorrow by using your tips , thank you for sharing the video
I wish art-schools would do more of this kind of teaching! Learning from experience and your own mistakes is crucial but none of the corses I’ve taken actually cover established techniques and approaches. Every painting class I’ve ever had was essentially based in the philosophy of “work it out yourself”.
Just stumbled on your video...been seen many portrait lessons on youtube for years..yours is the best i have seen and you are a very talented artist and teacher. best wishes.
EXTREMELY helpful. I've been doing a lot of portrait work lately and this gave me new concepts especially for color choice. I appreciate your expert way of presenting the lesson. Very wel done. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful talent with us.
I love this video! It was very informative and fun to watch! I love the part when you say “some people say ‘art doesn’t have rules,’ but it does have expected outcomes.” I want to write it out and hang that on my wall 😂
I have just discovered this little demo and its been like a visit with you. What a lovely lady you are and pretty too. I have been painting all my life, worked in oils since childhood, done a lot of portraits and yet enjoyed and learned from this visit. I may be less organised than you are though I mix in exactly the same way. I'd like to settle my process once and for all so I'll think of you as I set up for my next portrait. My house is clean and tidy now that I have cleaners by the way.
Thank you for this video. I've been drawing and painting all my life, but just started experimenting with oil painting. This was so enormously helpful, and you also made me laugh! Thank you!
I'm working on a painting right now and I took a break for some inspiration. I've watched this before and your positive energy always inspires me, so I watched it again. Thank you. :-)
AHH, those brush strokes makes me want to jump and start painting, but I'm too far from realism and don't want to destroy another canvas today. Thank you. You are talanted, smart and beautiful!
Very cool! And I love your instructions- you’re a really good teacher. Wish I can take classes with you. I am inspired to start painting, it’s been 5 yrs.
Great video! I love your paintings. Oiling out as far as I know, is when you rub oil into a finished dry oil painting where some of the colors have sunken,it's done to make those areas match the areas that didn't "sink". What your describing as far as I know is called painting into a couch. I hope you don't mind me mentioning this I just thought it might be helpful especially if anyone wanted to Google it. I look forward to more videos!
Thanks Leeahd! Yes, that's very helpful- I think I learned the term "oiling in" from a person who was using it to mean laying down oil to blend into, but when I looked it up on Google I found what you're talking about is the true usage and term. James Gurney also did a good job of explaining it here: gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2011/07/what-is-oiling-out.html
Yessss! Thank you! I've never heard of unbleached titanium. I feel like I've been living under a rock. Thanks so much for the expanded view (I, too, wonder how people who have neat palettes live...but I don't know any of those painters personally).
These videos are so helpful and especially this one where you actually explain what is going on! I would really like to try oil painting myself, but never really knew how to approach it. However, no that I've seen some of your videos, I feel a lot more sure about this and would love to get some paints some time soon. Keep up the good work, you definitely have a loyal follower in me!
I’m so glad I have come across your channel, like some of the other commentators, I have found trawling through hundreds of You Tube tutorials a bit frustrating, ( sorting the wheat from the chaff, as we say here in England ) but I love your demo & your terrific commentary, I really like how you expand your pools of colour across the palette, I am subscribed & look forward to seeing more of your posts....peace & love from another lobster !
@ Cynthia Sheppard Thank you so much for this. You have a wonderful easy voice to listen to, you could use your voice to make great hypnotherapy recordings you know as your voice is wonderfully soothing and relaxing that I could listen to your sweet voice all day and your teaching techniques and editing are equally impressive too. It's been years since I attended art college or done any art, have my now 21 year old daughter to thank for that lol because as well as her having Aspergers she became ill with M.E./CFS and Fibro after years of being bullied at school so all my focus went on her. After all, when she accidentally broke my most precious sculpture that had been exhibited, I realized that while that sculpture had taken me around 40+ hours my daughter had taken me 9 solid months to create and was far more precious than anything I could have ever created. At college, as my work progressed it became clear that I had a natural talent for creating the female form and portraiture and now I have my stunningly beautiful daughter for my Muse. 2 years ago I nearly died while in a 10-day coma from swine flu. I have been left with damaged lungs and damaged nerves in my legs but it has also increased my ability to see beyond this veil and so I hope to incorporate this ethearleness into my art as well. Wish me Luck!!! :) xxx
Thanks. Its really helpful. I like the way u depicted your process along with conversation. Lively presentation. Would you kindly post an video on how to manage color temperature or color value in oil painting?
Your videos not only inspire me to paint, but push myself much more than I have been! I'm going to try my best not to let anxiety/fear hold me back and have some confidence in my work. Confidence shows in it, right? :) I do have a request, if you don't mind? Would you mind touching on the subject of drawing 12+ hours and deliberately losing sleep in favor of more time on art? I've noticed this in so many beginners and try to steer some out of that line of thinking. Many believe that the more time you spend drawing, the better you'll get. There is also some strange, very strong aversion to studies in beginners. I genuinely appreciate these videos! I get big bursts of motivation after watching one, thank you!
Thanks so much for this great video! I'm feeling inspired, terrified and in awe. Did you ever have to overcome a major activation barrier to pick up the paint brush? How do you overcome these kind of hesitations? Love your loose style and very much your voice over. It's like having coffee with a friend :)
What you said about process and style at the 17min mark is easily the smartest thing I've ever heard anyone say. You are a smart person. Thank you for sharing your viewpoint.
I love to watch you paint, talk us through the steps you take, the lessons you have learned, your explanations, and what you want us to learn.
Amazing tutorial!! Wow - this is a proper teaching tool right here, excellent breakdown of process and technique. Thank you so much for sharing
This is one of your best process videos, thank you for your efforts and sharing this knowledge. It is also very inspiring!

Thanks for the demo. Your chat whilst painting is really helpful. It helps to understand your thought processes.

This is my first time watching you. LOVE LOVE LOVE YOU! I could listen to you all day long. Can't wait to watch the rest of your videos.
So amazing! And I love your sense of humor while you’re painting! I am feeling very inspired to paint. Thank you!
Thank you Cynthia, thanks for listening to your viewers, so kind of you and sharing an instructive video with us. I love love love today's lesson👍

You’re a fantastic teacher! Thanks. You’ve got a new subscriber.
Thank you for making this and sharing it! Your palette, the medium discussion, the process...so helpful and inspiring.

Quite possibly the best oil painting video I have ever seen! Thank you so much! Clear, concise, interesting!
Love watching you work! Thanks for explaining the transparency of the paints, that little bit of info is fantastic to know.
Totally awesome instructional video, I love the speed of the time-lapse, and comment.... you're slowing down just at the right time for some of the detail - well done!!!

Omg ,are u a human, may God bless u with much more happiness and a lot more creativity. Such talent 👌
Thanks for this! This is of a good tutorial length, I think, and your commentary is not dull and monotone. Well done.
Thank you so much for these demo and chat videos you make them so informal and watchable. I'm hooked !!! Peter Dee
