THE WHITE HOUSE FARM MURDER: Did they convict the right person?

  • August 1985, on a small farm near Essex, England, Nevill and June Bamber, Sheila Caffell and her two sons were shot to death in their home. On the surface, it appeared that Sheila, who had a history of mental illness, murdered her entire family, then herself. But Savannah explores how this incredibly mismanaged case could be a lot more complicated than this accepted conclusion. So what happened that night almost 30 years ago? Listen to hear why the evidence, the time it took to arrive on the scene, and why the only survivor, Jeremy Bamber, the Bamber's adopted son, has been under suspicion since day one.

    Daytime foster care is when someone takes care of the children during the days & does most of the parenting but then the children go back to the guardians through the night so they can sleep in their own beds in their home.

    If Sheila did kill herself when the authorities were there, they would have heard the gunshot and if they didn’t hear it, that would mean there was a silencer, but then they said it wouldn’t have been possible for her to shoot herself if the gun had the silencer attached. Yes, they convicted the correct person. Anyone who pays attention to those who knew "Bambi" said it could not have been her. These same people who also knew Jeremy were not shocked. Even those who had absolutely nothing to gain by Jeremy going to jail (the father of the twin boys). The "new evidence" proves absolutely nothing, and instead, opens everything up to more holes that do not make sense.

    Keep in mind that everything about the “dinner” is from Jeremy. No other living person was there to say if that was true. Colin had custody of the children anyway. Colin, the father of Sheila’s twin boys, had custody of the boys, so Jeremy’s absurd argument that the parents were going to give the kids to foster parents made absolutely zero sense legally. As Colin has said there is no way he would have ever agreed to this nonsense. Jeremy also lied and said Sheila’s mother rejected her; this was not true. Sheila’s birth mother was delighted by her, wanted to spend time with her, and Sheila was dazzled by her mother’s beauty and felt great love both for her and from her. Jeremy resented every penny his parents spent on her treatment. Jeremy lied about all of this - now HIS biological parents did in fact reject him. They never wanted anything to do with him, and after the murders they never interacted with him again. Sheila was also a very beautiful young woman who had a successful modeling career - Jeremy tried to SELL NUDE PICTURES OF HIS DEAD SISTER TO BRITISH TABLOIDS. PICTURES THAT WERE TAKEN IN PRIVATE BY COLIN THAT JEREMY STOLE FROM COLIN AFTER HER DEATH. CREEP!!!

    "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." Great Leo Tolstoy said this in Anna Karenina and he couldn't have been more right. It's such a heartbreaking story, especially because of those young boys. They were collateral damage, and that is the worst part of it.
    Just wanted to point out, Jeremy thought he was entilted to his parents help, but Sheila was not, because she was a woman and it was someone else's job to take care of her and her boys. It is so backwards, even then - it is your sister! , to think that way, and be so selfish to kill your entire family because you wanted the material only for yourself. Those people gave him everything, regardless of the way they might have been.
    If you are raising boys, teach them that they are not God's gift just because they are boys.
    Thank you for bringing us this story, Savannah. ❤

      Julie's testimony was corroborated by friends, and her diary, written before the murders, confirms her testimony. On top of that, so much of her account has the ring of truth and is too psychologically accurate to have sprung purely from her imagination. Julie's 'It's now or never' quote is exactly how JB would have seen the murder night. JB was convicted by compelling circumstantial evidence, not 'no evidence'.
      Why would Sheila not leave fingerprints on the shells? Why would Sheila try to sexually humiliate Neville's dead body? How did she manage the clinical shot into the back of the head of her own child? If Sheila didn't do it...then-

Bamber claims his father called him to say that Sheila had gone mad with a gun. If it could be shown that she couldnt have gone mad with a gun, then it was accepted that Bamber had made up the call and was guilty. Even his own barrister conceded this.

    One thing came to mind, if Jeremy was the killer, why would he go to such an extreme length to cover his tracks, but then forget to dispose of the key piece of evidence that incriminated him, the silencer? There would be no way he would leave this lying around the house with his finger prints on it. That's one aspect that never has been addressed, along with the fact there has been no physical evidence to place him at the crime scene.

    • @4Mr.Crowley2
      @4Mr.Crowley2 2 года назад +3

      He made lots of stupid and arrogant mistakes -he didn’t realize that the rifle with the silencer wouldn’t fit with Sheila’s small frame as a “suicide” until he actually tried to stage it. He never intended to remove it but was forced to do something with it at the last second - same with the multiple reloading of the gun, which with this gun - an old-fashioned farm rifle - was extremely dirty and difficult. Sheila had picture-perfect manicured nails in her autopsy photos. She had not been repeatedly reloading that rifle AND attacking the 6’4” Neville, who was still a very tough man at the age of 67. He was shot in the head yet violently struggled with the attacker, who beat him with the rifle and reloaded and chased him downstairs, which was not tiny Sheila.

      @@4Mr.Crowley2 Good answer Aleister, I just don't get why, despite being arrogant, he would still overlook leaving the silencer around. Just why go to all those lengths and then do that, why not dispose of it completely. I do actually have a very good friend who used to play his school at cricket and remembers him. I wonder if he reads all these comments? Hi Jeremy...One thing we have to address, is how screwed up our treatment of mental health is in our country, and despite promises, nothing gets done. Then we are surprised we have so much crime. Um......

    I have just looked into this case and it becomes evident in the face of new evidence that Jamie Bamber did not commit the horrific crimes.
    When the police SWAT team first went into the house they initially reported finding TWO bodies in the kitchen, a man and a woman, and of finding THREE bodies upstairs, a woman and the two two boys. This was later changed to one body in the kitchen and the other four upstairs ! How could this have happened? What if the woman originally found in the kitchen was Sheila, but she wasn't dead at that time - the policemen only did a perfunctory check. When the SWAT team slowly went upstairs, Sheila also ran upstairs using another staircase - one of three !
    She could have then shot herself fatally in the bedroom before the police looked in. The shot of a •22 rifle is not very loud. Or something completely different happened. Furthermore, TWO silencers were found in the house, one on 10th August a few days after the murders, and the one with the blood and red paint on it only a month later ! Finally, the police photos of the crime scene clearly show that the mark on the red wall was NOT there when the police photographed the kitchen - it must have been intentionally made much later, but by whom? I have always thought that the cousins of Jamie and Sheila should have been looked into more closely - with Sheila and the boys dead and Jamie convicted, they inherited the substantial Bamber family fortune......!

The whole thing is a massive tragedy for all involved, except for the extended family who "found" the silencer after police had searched the house & subsequently benefitted from Jeremy being found guilty. A massive cock-up by Essex police & a cover-up because it highlighted what a bad idea "care in the community" (which had been recently introduced in the UK) was. Loads of info on this case online if anyone is interested. No way would Jeremy be convinced if this had happened nowadays!

  • @ziggywiggy5480
    @ziggywiggy5480 3 года назад +4

    This will be a bit long-winded but a couple of things to note. As this case has both fascinated and terrfied me for ages. Guns are illegal in the UK. So incidents involving guns are relatively rare. Police officers (especially rural ones) as a rule do not carry firearms. so there are procedures in place if one is involved. The police had to call in a specialised firearm team who had to travel some distance to the farm. That is why there was a severe delay between the police being notified and actually entering the house. Ironically one of the few exceptions to these gun ownership rules are farmers, who are allowed to own a gun, hence the gun in the house.
    One of the worst things about this case is a convincing argument can be made for both sides. There are inconsistencies throughout. Two of the officers first on the scene record that they 'thought' they saw movement and a light in one of the upstairs windows upon arrival at the scene. At this point, Jeremy was stood with them so if somebody was still alive upstairs it would rule him out as the killer.
    Secondly in the official police records the firearms squad that first entered the building said they found both a deceased male AND female in the kitchen. When all later records show only the farther was found downstairs. The defence today is trying to use this as proof that Shelia was still alive at this point and returned upstairs, to the parents' bedroom before committing sucide.
    And this is literally just the tip of the iceberg. This is so much more to this case than we will ever know.
    Sadly the police messed this up to such an extent we will never know for sure who committed this terrible crime. Only one person is still alive who knows for sure and he maintains his innocence to this day.

    • @thecensoredmuscle563

      So basically the court ignores the first officers on the scene. I get if one thought, but when both officers saw movement and a light, that should be taken very seriously. Unless both officers have terrible eye sight.
      Does England have their version of the fbi? Because in America with sketchy cases like this, and ignoring the police officers statements who were on the scene first. It typically involves the fbi. Its also a reason why American cops don't like the fbi because the fbi always screws everything up and sets up people.

    My opinion is that he did it, the blood was still fresh because she was killed last and short before he called the police, he drove so slow so he could be sure Sheila died He killed the boys and I feel like if sheila did it, she would have killed only her parents for the way they thought about the kids since she loved her kids so much that she won't let them leave her side. Even if she talked about killing her kids, that may be a sign of postpartum depression. That can be treated if she seeked the help she needed, so she did. I do not think she was the mental anymore, if she took her medicine but it seems strange that a guy that had everything he wanted, killed his entire family and it seems like a sign of greedy. If his parents were dead together with his sister, all the money were his and he won't have a reason to share the 8% with his parents or accept his sister support from his parents.
    His girlfriend tho, it feels like she might be toxic and they enjoyed their toxic violent relationship. She sure knew he was gonna kill his family from the start. Maybe, this is a bit of a reach, helped because honestly I do not see him doing it alone. This is just a theory and as a fact that he betrayed her with another woman, he took the revenge and went to the police first.

Short term, could stay overnight to few months. 3. Short break, have a child to stay from a few hours each week to a couple weekends each month. 4. Support Care Part- Time, to provide children and families a break, arrangements are made to suit the needs of the family. I'm guessing I got this right lol great video.

    Though it clearly wasn't the right choice in this case, I think the police likely waited so long to enter the house because they were treating it like a hostage situation. In those situations, police typically try to establish communication with whoever is considered to be the suspect to try to talk them down and keep them from reacting violently and harming any victims.

    I read the book many many years ago it’s a bit of a blur to me now but while Jeremy was outside the house with the police and they could see someone in the upstairs windows looking down at then from behind the curtain.
    A member the police force I believe even made a statement to that effect, and Jeremy was beside him at the time.
    And I think the reason he was so slow to attend, and please correct me if I’m wrong but he was actually cycling his bike back to the farm. That is why the police passed him.
    Regarding the silencer, that was found by members of the family that ended up inheriting millions from the estate after that.
    It all seems very convenient.
    Then his girlfriend gets dumped and she goes to the police with, mostly hearsay and no actual proof. Plus she lied about the plumber having a part in it. Also didn’t she come away with some money from the relationship.
    I don’t know Jeremys involvement but I personally don’t think he should have been found guilty. There was/is too many other possibilities as to what could have happened.
    There is serious reasonable doubt here. Big time.

    • @thecensoredmuscle563
      @thecensoredmuscle563 2 года назад

      Who leaves a silencer around after doing that? Why would he do that use his hands to take off the silencer and put it in the cupboard in that very house the killings happened? Lol, if the guy did it, logically Jeremy would get rid of it. Not put it in a cupboard in the house of the crime. And if police are that incompetent in England that they searched the areas the silencer was "found", and didn't find it. Then this should have sparked a major change in police forces for better training and eye sight checking to see if they need glasses.
      Also the people who "found" the silencer, inherited wealth for that "find".
      Maybe the guy was that dumb and put it in the cupboard, but that is a stretch for anyone to be that dumb and intentionally leave evidence in the house.

    As a person with schizophrenia and a psychology student, this is very saddening. Schizophrenia is often one of the most stigmatized and misunderstood mental illnesses. It has been proven that people with schizophrenia are more likely to be the victim of a crime rather than a criminal. Also, schizoaffective disorder IS schizophrenia with the addition of a mood disorder (anxiety / unipolar or bipolar depression). Schizophrenia is pretty rare and schizoaffective is even more rare and often misdiagnosed. Thank you for covering this case and bringing light to the injustices of people with mental health issues.

He had to go downstairs to make the call as Jeremy had taken the bedside phone away earlier that day and hidden it downstairs in the snug. So he couldn't speak when he went downstairs. He was shot 4 times upstairs and another 4 times downstairs, Sheila had beautiful nails, and not one was broken despite the fact she was supposed to have reloaded the gun, and beaten Mr Bamber with it in the kitchen. There were no marks on her, despite the fact she had supposedly been in this fight, her body was Completely clean. No way would Mr and Mrs Bamber allow Jeremy to have a gun laying around the kitchen with 2 small boys running about.

    18:50 the reason why the police waited so long before entering the house is becuase they were informed that there was a loaded gun in the house, the UK police do not carry firearms and in a situation like this, they must call the specialist firearms officers unit, who are a specialist firearms unit which deal with situations which involve firearms.
    So the normal police had to wait for the specialist firearms officers police unit to arrive.
