this is how i understand verse 44. The parable of the hidden treasure and pearl are pertaining to the people who chose Jesus to be their savior and to serve God. The Kingdom of Heaven is for the people who learned about God's greatness and didn't hesitate to turn away from everything (bad doings) and have a change of heart (follow God's teachings) because the person knows how valuable the thing he has found (like the pearl or the hidden treasure was the ticket to enter the eternal place He promised to us which was the Kingdom of God)
I think in terms of the parable of the pearl and hidden treasure, just like the merchant and the man who finds the treasure, the person who seeks the kingdom and finds this hidden treasure will know that the kingdom is so valuable its worth giving up everything you have come to know(selling all they have= giving up a life of sin) and persuing the kingdom.
Jesus's return to his home town and what transpired there speaks volumes of my life. I was saved and baptized twice, but for many years, I have been judged from others about my faith. I have been a practitioner of many years in witchcraft, but came back to God within the past month. I am 28, and will be 29 on the 22nd of April. My first and second baptism and salvation relates to the parable of the sower/farmer. The seeds of God were placed on a thorn ridden path, smothered by sin, and kicked away from those I have had close relations to. I came back to God for his seeds to be planted in the rich soil. However, because of the path of thorns, I am judged by others. I am judged because I committed the ultimate sin of Idolatry. I committed the sin of speaking God's name in vain. I have committed the sin of bearing false witness and coveting. I have committed the sin of working on the Sabbath day for years. God is forgiving and merciful. Without him, we are nothing. Without faith, we are nothing. When judgment day comes, I will rejoice in coming to the kingdom of Heaven, while those who judged me will perish in Hell.

But I studied it often and ask the Holy Spirit for better understanding. My take on it is this: knowing who Jesus is, is a treasure. It's like someone who found Christ for the first time. He/she is excited and can't help but share the good news of Christ. That feeling, that conviction is the treasure that you never want to lose, thus why you hid it again. When you have Christ, everything else in the world is vanity. So in all, I believe what the parable is saying is that the kingdom of God is far better than all that you have in this world. When you find Christ (treasure) guard it.
Verse 44 tells me, when you find God and you choose to understand and love him, you have to give up everything that you have to posses the kingdom of heaven. Because when you truly understand the worth of God’s love and kingdom you will give up all of your earthly possessions in a instant.

The parable about the kingdom of heaven being like a precious pearl and treasure in field, could also mean or what I understood is that when a person finds or maybe understands the kingdom of heaven..he/she would see how valuable it is and everything else in his life doesnt matter, that he/she will give up everything for the kingdom..cause he/she will see that it's all they need. The difference I think between the pearl and the hidden treasure is that the hidden treasure was found, as in given to them with out effort but the pearl shows that we need to recognize its value thus requiring effort to find it's worth.

verses 44 somewhat seems to me like a man getting a glimpse of the kingdom of heaven (the treasure in the field) and sacrificing his worldly possessions and desires to get his soul saved by the treasure that God is. same thing with verse 45, the pearl. maybe one person has experimented with different belief systems and religions, “pearls”. but when he found the priceless pearl representing christianity and the kingdom of heaven, he sacrificed all of those prior belief systems and submitted to the kingdom of heaven.
I believe that in verses 44-46, we are the man/merchant. The hidden treasure/pearl is the promise of salvation found in Jesus Christ. Them selling all they had to obtain then is us giving up our sinful ways, giving up the ways of the world, in order to obtain that salvation.
