  • This chick appeared on Monday morning looking for his dad. We are still hoping dad will return and keeping him safe in the meantime. Parks and Wildlife are keeping an eye on it all with us.

      Their reproductive strategy in general is an inverse of what you'd typically expect. The females have large territories that encompass those of several males, and can mate with several of them, laying the eggs in their nests for them to incubate. When they hatch, the father continues to care for the chicks, patrolling their territory so they can feed and drink.

      Cassowaries are the bears or boars of Down under. If you value your life, you should stay the fuck away from the babies since mother and father might be able and most certainly willing to disembowel with one Kick.

    From what I saw in a documentary about them the female birds sometimes force their partners to abandon their chicks, that can happen if only one out of a brood survives and the mating season is still on. Essentially they ditch the one chick for a chance of a bigger (more successfull) brood on the second try.

      @@catscratch4512 Cassowaries can be dangerous, yes. But the whole "murder bird" thing is mostly exaggerated. Cassowaries rarely attack unless provoked and even then only two people have actually been recorded as being killed by a cassowary in nearly a hundred years.
      If anything humans (and dogs) are a much greater threat to cassowaries than it is to us.

    it is so sweet, it makes a tiny squeak like a little stuffed flamingo I used to have as a child. hopefully the chick is still alive and fully grown, frightening tourists on a beach somewhere :)

      well they grow up relatively fast in months they achieve full adulthood and at that stage they have literally no predators, not even jaguars dare to try to eat a cassowar so they will be fine

      ​@@floridaman318 They are. Look it up, and look up an accurate gallimimus while you're at it. Then look up hoatzin wing claws. You'll soon understand that not only are they dinosaurs by technicality, but that it isn't even just technical either because they also look very much like a regular dinosaur would.
      Also, for bonus points, look up yi qi to see an example of a theropod with a short tail.
      Birds are dinosaurs scientifically, and superficially too. Anyone who knows what a dinosaur looked like will be able to figure out birds are dinosaurs without even needing to look it up.

    Abandoned? Stateside, if you get a bear cub walking up to you by itself, it’s not really by itself. It’s mother is just a bit behind.
    If the chick looks healthy, it’s probably not abandoned. It’s parent is probably just a bit behind.

      Chick was a 'she' - taken by national parks staff and raised until released again but not here - released about 40km away in a different area of national Park- dont know whether she is still alive - they called her grande
