- This video walks through the process of changing the oil & filter on a 2012 Buick Verano with the 2.4 liter Ecotec 4 cylinder GM motor. The process covered in this video will be the same or similar on many other GM vehicles that have the Ecotec engine including the Buick LaCrosse, Regal, GMC Terrain, Acadia, Equinox, Malibu, etc.
Thanks a ton for this video.
You're the only person I've found that explains how to get to that oil filter and what size socket I needed.
Much appreciated!
Your welcome. Glad it helped.
Thank you so much. I took a look at the oil filter and was like - what????? HAHAHA - so used to the old school. What a pain it is to get out with a socket!!! Thanks again!
You're welcome, hope it helped!
I really appreciate you and the video I have a2013 Buick varono now I can do it myself thank you so much sir
Glad it helped. Thanks for the comment.
Another great design by GM.
Yep, great design!
Today I went ahead and just changed the oil filter and not the oil...it was not due for a complete change but I wanted to just put in a new filter(the previous dealer filter was very dirty). Got a 36mm socket from Amazon to fit on that filter cover(2013 Verano 2.4L). Not a lot of room to maneuver in there to grab the filter cap. I also used a 6" extension plus a universal swivel joint extension which really helped since I could not get the extension perfectly straight from the filter cap.
The cap was installed so tight I had to use my long-handled torque wrench for leverage! Finally got it loose. Tried to re-install the filter while attached to the cap but could not get the cap to remain vertical to start the threading so I first seated the filter and then installed the cap which has to snap onto the filter...new O-ring was added to the cap as well. There are a couple of hoses that make it difficult to install the cap but if you can remove one or both it makes it much easier. Glad I did this, cost me only around $8.00. the oil could always use some extra cleaning before the next oil change! :)
32 mm socket sold at Wally World for $7.00
Wow. That’s a drippy mess of a job. I appreciate the video! Great job showing the finer details of where the oil goes and this crazy cartridge filter arrangement. Keep up the good work. I’m Fixin to do this with someone else’s tool set and not make a mess,.... hopefully.
Thanks! Yes, it can be a mess of a oil change job. The bigger the drain pan the better, but it's hard to find bigger oil drain pans at the store. Good positioning of the pan helps! Good luck on your oil change.
U should use a swivel socket to attach to your extension then the socket to remove the cartridge. It makes it easier and safer.
Good suggestion. I even bought a shorter socket after I made this video, one specifically made for this.
@@ucanduitdude2317 Yup exactly. They make a socket set just for cartridge filters on Amazon or eBay. My wife just bought a Equinox with the 2.4l. and I've had a couple 2.2l in my family growing up. Great engines that get a horrible rep because of lack of maintenance, and lack of checking the freaking dipstick between changes lol
Thanks bud, this helped a lot.
Just an extra tip. Cut a small piece of the plastic off by the oil drainage to get it to just stream into the oil pan.
Nice and to the point. I have an 08 Pontiac G6, 174k miles, and I've only ran conventional in it is while life (we bought it 9 years ago with 25k miles). I am today, however, going to change over to Amsoil Signature with an Amsoil filter. I've heard pros and cons in doing so but I'm going to give it a shot. Worse case scenario it'll pass (burn) too much oil and i'll go to a full synthetic blend or back to conventional. We'll see. My next new car will have Amsoil signature in it for certain.
Sounds good. Hope the synthetic works good for you! Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it.
SH72 Amsoil is full synthetic. Use the Amsoil twice, two oil changes before making any rational decisions. First use if cheaper or conventional oil had been used, the Amsoil will clean it out. Long story short, if it seems to leak oil a bit it is cause it is cleaning out sludge around seals & that should clear up after 2nd change. I've heard that 'leak' complaint before & it happened to me. I did some research 7 found out why. If you know how to check your MPG & are decent in math, the Amsoil ends up being cheaper than others by a bit. Way cheaper for me. Good luck.
Thank you man!
Thanks a million for the video.
You're welcome! Hope it helped.....
Oh - the car had been previously maintained by the dealer - they cut out a portion of the plastic tray to let the oil drain. . . .
Yeah, I've been thinking about doing that to this car. Maybe before the next oil change......
I did this without the mess.. You can just detour the oil with a plastic funnel into a drain pan.
Good tip, Thanks! I'll definitely try that next time!
I used an oil extractor and had zero mess 😁
Wouldn't it be less messy to remove that plate obstructing the drain plug? I have some partial skid plate obstructions in my 2000 tacoma and have always removed two plates (pain in the butt tho LOL) to let the oil and filter drain more directly into my catch pan. Thanks for the video by the way.
Yes, I've thought about cutting out a small section to let the oil drain directly into the pan, but haven't done that yet.
@@ucanduitdude2317 Oh I see now it's a structural member! Ugh, I wouldn't mess with altering that. I'll just be prepared for the mess. Luckily the whole area is easy enough to reach into to wipe and/or stuff some "dam" material in to guide the flow.
Hey man make me some of those ramps I like those my la crosse is so dang low I can’t get under it
Thanks for the video! How you enjoying the Verano these years later?
Thanks. Yes my wife loves this car, good gas mileage for commuting to work. Wish it had a little more leg room in the back for those times when we have 4 people in there!
How do you reset the oil light from coming up
I presume that plastic tray comes off the bottom of the car, so that it isn't such a mess. My 2014 civic is that way.
Yes, the tray will come off, but is extra work. Letting the oil drain on the tray usually doesn't make to much of a mess so I always just leave it on.
What if I change the oil already.. can I still change the oil filter after
Yes, you can change the filter at any time. You won't lose any oil, other than what's soaked in the filter material.
You ALWAYS change the oil filter when you change your oil just like he did in the video.
Muybueno gracias
What size socket does it take ?
The filter cap takes a 32mm and the drain plug is 15mm.
do u need a crushed washer for the drain plug?
No, there isn't a crush washer on the drain plug.
You should have shown how to take off the tray it’s a pain to pull out and you usaly end up brakeing the plastic pins unless you buy the proper tool to pull them and are expensive to replace
True, I was thinking about that, but the last few times I changed the oil I just left it on. Maybe I'll make a video the next time I change the oil, and I'll take off the tray then.
You have a smart son. "Signature Series, Amsoil, ok too" ? What?! Just OK ? You can not find anything better than that ! That doesn't look like an Amsoil Oil filter ?? Shame. Don't tell your son. I like his car by the way. Glad he takes good care of it.
I agree with you Amsoil is the best. I have almost 300k on my Silverado and always used Amsoil. Thanks for the comment.
What a hack job. Why would anyone drain the oil onto the plastic panel? That would drop oil everywhere you go, on driveways and stuff. The panel is made to come off
Very true, just takes extra time to take off the panel, but would be much cleaner. I know the fast change oil places don't take the panel off, but they have a way to direct the oil directly to their catch tank.
To de honest it’s bullshit it would cost them nothing to cut out a rectangular hole so you would not have to remove the hole panel and save themselves a few pennies by doing so
Very true, I don''t know why they didn't just design the tray so that the oil doesn't hit it when it drains out?
Yep your one of those guys that wait for the bullshit 6 months or year oil change and then your going to bitch that your engine needs rebuilt or replaced. These new engines must have the oil changed every two or three months regardless of the brand or type oil you use.
130,000 and still going strong. My pickup has 310,000 and did the 1yr changes for probably 5 yrs. I'm doing 6 month changes now, even with the Amsoil Signature series. I guess we'll see how much longer it lasts.
Every 2 or 3 month change intervals is a waste of oil
Or, take the tray off!
True.
