My mom grew up in a Cantonese and Toisanese speaking household, but she mixes the two dialects up because growing up she didn't know the different until she was older and friends told her she spoke Cantonese weirdly. She calls small children "sum min zai" which sounds Cantonese, but I've never heard any of my other Cantonese speaking friends say that. Now I know it could be because in Toisan it's "slum in duoi".
Some of the words are difficult to write in english because there's no way to spell the sounds or phrases. *tongue between teeth while pushing air out the sides* Lah-men-doi = children.
I believe they are different dialects/variations from each other. Your mum's description of children is the same as my family's. My ancestor originated from Xinhui district in Jiangmen (Kongmoon) which is neighbouring Taishan. My late grandfather tend to say that we are Xinhui/Sunwui (新會) people and our language, Xinhui/Sunwui dialect. Nowadays, newer generations of my family speak the prestige variety of Guangdong dialect (standard Cantonese).

I can speak and understand Toishan better than Cantonese because it was the first language/dialect that I learned from my parents and grandparents. I hardly ever hear Toisan at all in Philadelphia Chinatown with the exception of the older generation speaking. It is great hearing it but unfortunately I hardly use it very much and starting to slowly lose my ability to speak it. Thank you for sharing this!!!

Thanks haven't hear taishanwah for a while. We used to have big community of taishanese in montreal, but recent immigration from China has kinda diluted the taishanese population. Now we mostly hear mandarin. Even I have to pickup mandarin in order to talk to chinese now. Curiously as enpingnese I have no trouble to understand taishanwah. From young age till now I can understand older generation. I just talk back to them in Cantonese mix with a little enpingwah and they understand me quite easily. Maybe taishanwah and enpingwah are very similar. Same with hoiping people. Beside very specific words most of them are very similar.

The southern part of Guangdong used to be part of the Annamese Kingdom a long time ago, I think Guangxi Cantonese phrasing is very similar to a lot of Vietnamese phrasing, but I think that is only natural as the areas are so close.
The Taishanese Dialect is a result of the Southern Song Royal Family's migration to southern China. Many Northern Song Dynasty Han people settled into the Yamen area after the Battle of Yamen.

Taishanese - that weird version of Cantonese some of my friends spoke that I didn't understand but "got". It's trembling at the border of "dialect" and "language." Language is a strange thing.
Lin Lin doesn't have the strong Taishanese accent my dad has from being born and raised in Baisha. But then my dad is also fluent Cantonese and Mandarin. Cantonese from his days at Pui Ching Middle School in HK and Dongshan, Guangzhou. Then he had to learn Mandarin when he was accepted to study Engineering at Tsinghua U. in Beijing. But, myself, I more influenced by my mother's more Westernized Hong Kong background. My gong gong was raised in Fiji and spoke mostly English and some Cantonese as he studied at Lingnan U at the beginning of the 20th Century, The main reason why I kept my fluency in Cantonese is from the 4 years of Chinese school on Mondays after my regular school. Also key is the fact that my pow pow was a Guangzhou native and was not too conversant in Taishanese! My Chicago cousins, my mom's nephews and nieces, on the Cheung side of my family, where all taught in Taishanese by their mother her Moy side of the family which has strong roots in Chicago. When ever my dad calls my Uncle Bob in Chicago, he always teases Uncle Bob in Taishanese. When Uncle Bob left HK in the 1960s to go study at the U. of Wisconsin (Stevens Point), he could not speak a word of Taishanese when he took weekend trip down to Chicago to work as a produce truck driver in Chinatown and he still isn't fluent today.

I was told that my "father" tongue was "Sun ning waa" (spoken in canto). Is it the same as Toishanese? Wikipedia says that Taishan County was previously known as Xinning County until 1914. While we say "sek faan" in canto, my uncles would say "hek faan".
So I'm no expert in either Canto/taishanese, but I believe you're correct! Taishan was indeed historically called Xinning, and "Sun ning" does seem to match the cantonese pronunciation. Also, "hek faan" or "hyak faan" also seems to match. So yes, I believe your "father tongue" is Taishan/Hoisaan/Toishan wa :)
if you want to pronounce that funky taishanese consonant, put your tongue as if you were going to say "L" and keep it there, and then make an 'H' sound! 咁樣做應該發到音 :D

在香港的开平人路过。四邑话与广州话分别颇大，但又有共通之处，基本上四邑地区的人似乎天生懂得听说广州话(虽然有口音)。其实，江门地区的四邑方言各县镇也不尽相同~~，本地土生土长的才能够分辨出来。

我係喺廣州出世廣州大嘅台山仔。廣州話都有「初來暴到」，個「暴」同台山話「阿步」嘅「步」，兩個音應該係同源（音係古越音，非漢音）；廣州話嘅d聲母，對應台山話會係零聲母，而且廣州話會相對古音i韻母會變成a，所以廣州話「第一(dai jat)」，對應台山話係「第一(ai jit)」一連讀就變成ait；另外台山話嘅「仔」應該係「崽」，古聲母dz不分，後期先至分家，廣州話聲母z，對應台山話聲母d，「知」廣州話zi，台山話就係di，「崽」廣州話zoi，台山話doi。

ABC cantones 因為從語言學角度台山話就劃入粵語 ,就如從潮汕話和雷州話根本還難和閩南話溝通 ,可是還是劃入閩南語區的道理一樣
PS:補充一下 潮汕話和閩南話好像可以通到七成左右 ,不過前提是雙方語速要放慢才有可能 ,感覺差異性沒有廣州話和台山話差那麼多

兩種都是粵語吧。粵語有許多方言。臺山話其實有一點接近惠州、河源一帶的客家話，發音聽起來像是廣州話+惠州河源客家話的混雜，與福建什麽的一毛錢關係都沒有。
古时候閩語（主要閩南語）在廣東由東往西沿海整块都有擴散到，雖然當初擴散到珠三角的閩語到现在只有少部分殘留下一些方言島，但消失了的那些閩語也有部分跟粵語融合或影響了部分粵語，四邑粵語有些音和詞匯確實有閩語的痕跡，不過也一樣有受客家話，贛語等影響
有很多方言的叫广东话 粤语系叫广州话

廣州話衹是粵語的一個分支而已（廣州西關口音是約定俗成的粵語“標準口音”，就連廣西說勾漏粵語的人都遵循這個約定俗成的標準）。你聽過廣西南寧的粵語嗎？你聽過廣西玉林的粵語嗎？你聽過廣東吳川的粵語嗎？你聽過粵語東莞話嗎？你聽過廣東封開的粵語嗎？論與廣州話的差距，廣西玉林勾漏粵語遠比臺山話大，但人家仍然是粵語。作為粵語小小子分支的臺山話竟然敢說自己不是粵語？大膽！無知！
我魁北克都是台山老华侨，我本身潮州人，会一点点粤语，对这个四邑话表示无奈~~~ :3

if you want to pronounce that funky taishanese consonant, put your tongue as if you were going to say "L" and keep it there, and then make an 'H' sound! 咁樣做應該發到音 :D

o kwai 或者 o nin，其实应该系o kwoi 和 o niŋ，o 实际上系广州话“到”，吞咗“d”嘅发音。所以，“打 [daa] ”，省略“d”而发“a”音，以此类推。
