I have a Blue Atlas Cedar and want to take cuttings and make it into a bonsai. The tree is rather mature so I will take larger cutting from the tree so it takes less time. Any tips?
Excellent, Jelle. Please do a video about your substrate mix and the Akadama testing that you have done, it will make an interesting subject. Keep growing bonsai !
Thank you Clicio! I am considering re-doing the experiment and will report on that eventually. The testing I have done only resulted in a few pictures which I think does not do justice to the topic!?
Finally subscribed! Enjoy your videos and this one is no exception. Especially like Junipers. I’m gonna try and give rooting a chance. Not meaning to be morbid but at my age don’t know how far along I’ll get with it LOL! Thanks for your videos!
Thank you so much Renaud. I really need this feedback every once in a while. RUclips is so impredictable as to what people will click on that I sometimes feeel like stopping when a video just is not watched that much!
Love your content! Informative und relaxed… I have made a few hundred cuttings (Juniper, Acer Palmatum, Acer Ginnala, Chinese Elm, Forsythie, Potentilla, Cherry…) in the past years and really enjoy the process. I know they don’t Look like much for the first years, but eventually they will and that whole journey is very rewarding and fun.
Like you for the kind words. I agree. There is something really rewarding about growing things from seed or cutting, even though the road is long and winding!
Fabulous video. I enjoyed and subscribed. I'm intermediate in my knowledge so the advice you freely give us all is a welcomed gift. Thank you very much.
Great to hear this. I do do this to help people in the early - middle stages get their feet on the ground and confidence up. Most things in bonsai are not dificult, but mostly scary. And a lot of information out there is only half-complete. :)
Great vid Jelle. Very nice to have a reference for every stage in the process. I am not overly successfull with my cuttings. But I have a handful of 1 and 2 year old, and that is good enough for me. Keep up the good work!😀👍
Thanks a lot for your nice comment. Feel free to share the video amongst -especially- beginners in bonsai. Do you know why you are not succesful with taking cuttings? Is this for juniper in specific? Or all types of cuttings? I am thinking of doing a vid looking at cuttings for different species..
@@GrowingBonsai thanks jelle well I’ve been developing junipero proc nana for past few years hear in Los Angeles learning step by step basically from the basics .. everyday I learn something new in the bonsai world .. junipero seems to be my passion for last few years .. love the process like you said .. thanks again Jelle
Thank you so much for this insightful, inspiring video. I love how calmly you explain everything-it's pretty zen-like. I'll do that too now with my big juniper tree that I have to leave behind b/c of moving. I cared for it for 10 years and while it breaks my heart, I'll take my cuttings :D - Super tip! I'll see, what comes out of it. Thanks again. xo
Really enjoyed this video Jelle. I'm not an expert in junipers- I have only three in pots - but your information in this video was really useful. What's the largest juniper branch cutting that you have achieved to root? Also, cuttings in Spain are tricky because the air here is dry so the foliage dries pretty quickly. So, for cuttings I tend to use a propagator for high humidity.. would this also work ok for juniper cuttings?
Thx Blue Sky! I normally only root thin ones, say, up to pencil. Anything thicker and I prefer air layering. Key is to not let them dry out. SO out of sun and wind. If whether is dry, a humid environment -such as a propagator- can help. I keep the cuttings below a bench in the shade, where they get watered every time I water my trees :)
Very cool LB, nice trees 😁 I totally agree about enjoying the process, of course I could buy a tree a save me 10 years of process, and I would have lost 10 years of this experience, I wouldn't be able to see my path on the tree's progression, my hits and misses... So yes, I like to grow also from seed and cuttings... Buying a more advanced material is also nice, but it's just different.
Completely agree with you! I enjoy both working on advanced aged material, as much as a few years old cuttings! Did you see the video that only focusses on wiring young juniper whips? ruclips.net/video/lYDH9T-_pD4/видео.html
Love your video, I also love doing cuttings , the process is as much fun watching the development of what you have accomplished from a cutting or even a seed. I do cuttings just about on anything I want to copy or air layer branches of fruit trees etc , it’s my sanity and sanctuary lol. 👍
What a joy to find another great Bonsai channel, especially a fellow Dutchman. Have you grown any tropical trees? And, can you recommend any specific products that you use for your soil mix?
Hey Luuk, check out my videos. I have ficus and raintree intro videos. A big ficus video in the making, but it will take till winter before that one is all done! My substrate is diatomous soil, expanded shale, pumice and pine bark. Quite simple! Groet! Jelle
Thank You. If a Juniper Cutting is Planted in the Ground or a Big Pot do you think it will Fasten the Process of Getting Bigger and Thicken the Trunk what you Suggest Please? Cheers 🙌
How thick/ diameter can we cut off? New wood or old wood. I have a 800 year old CalifJuniper. Can I prune off a half inch branch, or should I air layer it. It is the beginning of of summer now. Thank you. 🙏🙏 ❤
Curious, what about Juniper Nana? This one in the video does not look like one of them that I have. And how can I get my trunk looking thicker like the one on Karate kid?
Do you mean Juniperus Procumbens nana? Nana is just small, and is not a species. I am not sure what you are asking. I have not seen karate kid so I am not sure what trunk you mean.
@@GrowingBonsai I believe that’s the right name for it. I’m sorry but I thought everybody had seen karate kid at this point in their lives. Just trying to find out if I should grow it the same way and the trunk will get thicker

Which guy? Do I know him!?

I agree with you, some people say that cutting is wasting time, but I do it and also air layering it coz I love it
Hi Atrock, thank you for your nice words. As long as you enjoy the process, there is no such thing as wasted time, in my view!
I think you're a great teacher. And I appreciate the videos that you put out.I have learned a tremendous amount from you.Thank you very much

Yes! It is great to see trees materialize from cuttings. Slow, but rewarding I find.

Thank You.

Normally, the ground would be quicker, assuming fertilizing & watering is the same.
Thanks jelle
Did you use a root hormone for these ?
I typically do not use rooting hormones on Juniper!

you can cut them off. If you want to root them it gets harder as the branch gets thicker.
Please can I ask what do you use for your substrate..
Of course, take a look: www.growingbonsai.net/characteristics-of-good-bonsai-substrate/
After cutting, do we need to watering it diaily?
Hey, In my case, the cuttings are below the table with my regular bonsai and they get watered just as often as my regular junipers do.
Curious, what about Juniper Nana? This one in the video does not look like one of them that I have. And how can I get my trunk looking thicker like the one on Karate kid?

Absolutely
Do you have any Juniperous Virginiana?
I do not, no. Should I?
👍👌👌🙂🙂
🤨😁
Hast du auch schon Videos in Deutsch gemacht ?
Hallo Andreas, leider nicht :(
My sensei says it takes ten years for a tree to be a bonsai.
I doubt a specific time can be given. Each species is different, and local conditions as well as skills. And of course, the starting point..
