Hey all, I've learned some new things since making this video and wanted to address them here. (There is a jump cut now and this is about that)
1) Never flip your filters, use them in a single direction because flipping them can cause previously locked particles to loosen.
2) If you want to airbrush enamels, solvents, or harsher things than acrylic paint, use a HEPA-grade filter in your mask and air booth the best protection,
Thanks everyone for reaching out to me in the comments and helping me learn!
Really appreciate you updating this :) Thanks
JSYK I misunderstood the HEPA thing, HEPA does not filter VOCs either, since they are gaseous; you need activated charcoal or carbon filters. as for masks, the 3M cartrige types, any listed here in the top section that list organic vapors multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/40744O/3m-respirator-cartridge-and-filter-selection-poster.pdf
sorry about the misinfo previously.
I moved into an unfurnished apartment last year and bought a second hand coffee table in which I placed all my paints, brushes and the minis I’m currently painting.
I have a cutting mat that I use to protect the table when I paint, but due to using an airbrush, some of the paint got on the table. I remember that the first time this happened, I was thinking “man…the landlord is gonna be mad”
Then I remembered that it was my table 😁
Important!! Don’t flip your filters.
You should only ever use them in one orientation.
Also if you ducted the one from the airbrush booth so it used more surface area a bit instead of just taping it direct, you’d get loads more use out of it.
That's great to know, why not flip the filter!?
@@lovedeathdice They're designed to catch stuff on their high surface area and it mostly stays stuck to that side. They are stacked in a specific order as well usually so bigger particles will be caught before smaller ones. If you reverse them they become less effective (if they're ordered, not all are).
When you flip them it can push some of that back into the atmosphere with the air going in the other direction, most HEPA filters have an arrow showing direction of flow. :)
@@subodai85 So what he showed in the video actually wasn't flipping (back to front) but rather turning (90 degrees). Is turning them also bad?
I came to the comments to say the same thing. Most filters are designed for the air to flow through in one direction and flipping can actually release trapped particles back into the area you’re in.
Bought a house so just spray airbrush or rattle can into a cardboard box and vacuum up the dried paint later while wondering why I feel so buzzed off just 1 beer.
If you dont have access to a window you could also try hooking your booth up to a indoor dryer vent (and put the merv filter inside of it) so you dont have the spraybooth air blasting right into your room.
Subbed because of this video. I have an apartment, not a lot of space, this was super helpful!
This is incredibly useful. Thanks for sharing.
Happy to help!
Nice, I was just thinking about this yesterday, wondering how I can recommend people who live in apartments get into airbrushing. Now I can just send them this video! Great stuff.
Great quality video
I use a bucket with water, my airbrush booth is connected to this bucket the water absorbs most of the fumes, I also put some scent on the water so smells good.
This is the correct method if you cant vent the booth air to the outside, water in the bucket catches almost all the paint particles and then a simple carbon filter before the holes in the bucket lid will make sure no smell gets out.
Hi. Can you give your measurement of the bucket, amd how many water you need?
@@RelightLowlight standard home depot white bucket with lid...
fill about 4 to 6 inches water
connect exhaust hose to top of lid, use silicon to do this, you first need to cut hole to fit vent hose in lid push that hose down half way in bucket above the water not touching water.
on lid drill 6 to 8 1 inch holes around vent hose this is so the pressure is equal inside and out side
use aquarium grade filter to p;lace on top of lid covering those holes, you can sent the water if you want... yt has several videos showing how to make this. this system is what the pros use....
The dark algorithm gods presented me with your channel tonight. I like it. Subbed and bell rang.
Do you have a link to where you got the wall shelf for your paint bottles? Love how it looks!
Sure thing!

Should check the new waterfall spray booths .
Fuck the landlord. It is only airbrushing. No window? No problem. A bucket with some water, some big holes on the lid, a filter and here you go. Your landlord has no saying on that.
Hmm... "It's only a rental, not my property. Fuck the landlord." I would deduct all of your security deposit and charge you for cleaning. Why be an inconsiderate swine? I don't get it.
I just put a poster board up and spray in front of that. Idk how effective it is.
I'm fairly new to all this. Could someone explain to me why you need a spraybooth for spray cans if youre doing it outside already? Can't you just use some newspaper in a box so you don't cover the balcony in paint? I understand the fan part, but is there a health risk in using spray cans outside (with a respirator)? Thanks!
You don't. You literally don't need any of this shit. It's the most American consumerism stuff I've ever seen lol
If your balcony gets plenty of airflow and is pointed towards the street or something you can easily just prime out in the open. My balcony faces other people and there is next to no airflow, so the paint just sits in the area with me. Because of this partially dried paint particles stick to the wet paint of my model and give it a gritty texture - not great. That way a spray booth sucking in all those particles is critical for me.
SOOOOOOOOOOOO glad I own my own home...renting was the worst
You could do monthly and it would be normal for someone that loves their hvac. But 3 months is average.
Do you have any tips for wearing glasses while using a respirator? I use a thick rimmed square pair because it's the only type that fit around the mask, but I can only paint for about an hour and a half before it becomes too painful to keep working.
I feel your pain, I try and mount my glasses on the outside of the mask to take pressure off my nose and ears, I'm sure you've tried that though.
Maybe something like this would elevate the glasses from your face and help relieve the pressure?

I'm using acrylic water based paint. Do I still need to do this? I'm primarily weathering my cosplay stuff
I would still recommend it or at least do it outside. Since it's cosplay you're using more paint than us miniature painters and I feel it's crucial to not breathe all that in.
What was the battery airbrush you used?
Here ya go boss!

Why do you basecoat with spray paints when you have an airbrush and a indoor airbrush setup? Love the vid! Going to try this myself!
It's super helpful for batch painting! Plus some days I'm lazy and don't wanna clean the airbrush
ah yes, 7 = smaller particles, 4 = bigger particles
that makes sense...
You'd think it'd be the opposite, but here we are
What air purifier are you using? I didn't see it in your gear list
Here ya go!

@@lovedeathdice thank you!
does this also work for lacquer based paints?
You'll need some HEPA grade filters in you booth and mask for this!
@@lovedeathdice thanks so much
Where do you live that a landlord would scold you for using an airbrush in your home? And above all: what should happen that he would even take notice of it?
Probably California and the venting fume probably pissed off a nosey neighbor..
Love the work but can’t process priming a rubric black
It's my tester mini :P It's brother's are waiting to be turned into a kill team.
Find out if the landlord collects minis.......
Vacum cleaner bag it is
get a "grow" tent and air filter setup .)
A MERV filter does NOT filter anything besides the paint particles, so if you're using anything other than water based acrylic, its nearly useless. Also, thats not how you wear that respirator, nor is your filter good enough for harmful aerosolized paint.
Merv filters are a trusted way of filtering out problematic stuff.

www.grainger.com/know-how/equipment/kh-what-is-merv-rating-air-filter-rating-chart
@@lovedeathdice Did you consider reading your own second link? MERV filters do NOT filter VOCs. lacquer and Enamel paint OFTEN contain carcinogenic materials, that's why we use vents, and why they need to be efficient. You are giving people false information implying that your paint setup is anywhere near effective enough for MOST hobby paints. Yours is only sufficient for water-based acrylics. Actually understand the things you're talking about and stop giving people "advice" that will lead to them giving themselves cancer. Your room air purifier likely helps, but it still pulls it past YOU. You didnt even know not to flip the filter, you think you should be telling people how to avoid cancer causing compounds?
@@pwnage402 This set up would work if I am only spraying acrylics though? Just checking because I would love to get an airbrush but also live in an apartment.
@@andrewanderson1988 yep, if you're only spraying normal water-based acrylics, all you really need to worry about is the paint particles themselves, no fumes :)
damn landlords
why would you buy rattle cans why u have paint and airbrush
When I'm priming dozens of minis at once, rattle cans are just faster and good enough. I'm talking 80 models that need priming. If its a squad or a single model, the airbrush is the move.
Good god man. Look at the money you've got tied up in Minis. You could have used that money to make the down payment on a house. A trailer in a trailer park.. i dunno what the market is like wherever you are.
Don't get me wrong - cool hobby, but bad priorities.
Wait what? You're just assuming he is spending a disproportional amount of his income on his hobbies, when you have no idea how he divides his finances. What a weird leap to make.
