    Aasimar celestial warlock / divine soul sorcerer:
    - Aasimar has genetic link to a divine entity
    - Divine soul expresses divine lineage through sorcery and can also access the cleric spell list
    - Celestial warlock works in service of a divine entity and wields divine power.
    There you go, a character with magic fueled by up to three different divine entities. It's the holy trinity, and is actually a functional character.

      I like the idea that maybe the Warlock themselves didn't make the Pact. Perhaps someone else signed them up. Certainly get's over that, "Why the _everloving fuck_ would anyone make that deal?" hump that the Fiendlock has built into it. Also DM'd a group that had an Assimar and Tiefling warlock duo who were brother and sister givin their parents were Tiefling and Assimar but their Patron was a set of weapons from both their households. Thus Hexblades with a celestial and fiendish theme. Ironically the Assimar took fiendish weapon (Scimitar) and Tiefling the celestial weapon (Halberd)

    My latest character (playing in Tomb of Annihilation) dipped into warlock because he needed the armor boost from Armor of Shadows at second level. He is a rogue that needed to become a front line "fighter" due to party composition and warlock has helped him do so with the Hexblade as his patron. We still can't find better armor than mage armor in the jungle.

    One character concept I've always wanted to play is a "warlock" who is in actuality some minor deity whose power has been sealed away from them by a more powerful force, and the increased Warlock powers are actually the character's own inherent power being incrementally returned to them by the higher power in return for changing their ways.

      There's an idea in the Primeval Thule setting (Sasquatch Games) where an option for a character background is that they're actually a pan-dimensional being who's trapped in a human (or whatever) body. They're adventuring in order to train this feeble humanoid brain to harness the magic necessary to send them back to their rightful abode.
      It's not _limited_ to Warlock, but it's very appropriate.

    Describing how the devine power surges thru his boddy, giving him a heavenly glow aswell as a halo, whenever he casts anything above 5th lvl is just pure entertainment gold... aspecialy when some randome paladin getts forced to aknoledge this devine devil. ^^
    The "Falen angel" and "Faypact warforged" get similar comedic moments, bt i just cant unimagine the majestic horns of my tiefling being in the whay of the matherializing halo wich is why it hanges in an angle... or burns a hole in the horns.

    I’m surprised that they didn’t mention the deep gnome! Adv on 3 magic saving rolls, 120 dark vision, advantage on stealth checks in rocky terrain! But the thing that really makes this race AMAZING with Warlock is the Svirfneblin magic feat! At will non-detection on self with no material cost and three spells every long rest that do not use a pact magic slot. Blur is a self buff that gives disadvantage on all attack roll’s against you. Blindness or deafness debuff spell. And then the disguise self utility. They aren’t amazing, but two self buffs, debuff, and utility, none of which use up a pact slot is so useful for a Warlock!!!

    But next best is Mountain Dwarf. At level 5 I have 16 for Str, Con and Cha . I see that monster and cast Deafness on it and Darkness on myself. I use Devil's Sight and come at you with my battleaxe. Or Poison Spray. It's a pretty lethal combination...

      The whole Darkness + Devil's Sight combo sounds good (and is good under certain circumstances), but you have to take into account the effect that sphere of darkness is going to have on your allies. Also, feel your DM out on their ruling regarding Hunger of Hadar. That _can_ work even better if you want to stay at range and snipe with Eldritch Blast.

    I made a Celestial Warlock that ended up having an eastern monastic aesthetic. His primary weapon and tool was his quarterstaff, and tried to build him as kind of a croud control, half healer. I also took Pact of the Tome and took Shillelagh which let me kind of copy Hexblade and use his Charisma stat for his quarterstaff. Also Repelling Blast is a fun invocation, especially since my DM let me take advantage of the environment. He is one of my favorite characters I've ever played.

  • @chunkytheclown3422
    @chunkytheclown3422 5 лет назад

    The most fun pure Warlock I ever played was when I used a variant human with the War Caster feat, the Hexblade patron, and the Curse Bringer invocation to make Ludwig from Bloodborne. Flavor War Caster so you're casting magic with the greatsword itself (while having an arcane focus amulet around your neck and a component pouch at your belt) and boom, you have the Holy Moonlight Sword, complete with real energy beam action.
    It actually turned out to be rather strong, too. As a Bladelock it was never anything crazy, but as a fourth level Hexblade, the Great Weapon Master feat, Curse Bringer invocation, Hexblade's Curse feature, and Accursed Specter feature all worked fantastically well together to let you crit easier, shift your Hexblade's curse around without waiting, and attack multiple times in a single turn on top of the existing massive damage boosts Hexblade Warlocks get due to a multitude of different means. Not to mention how fun it was to run a character that devoted so much time and attention to a single unique weapon that completely stood out from everything else on the battlefield.
    Aah, you were at my side, all along. My true mentor...My guiding moonlight...

    In terms of optimization: Scourge Aasimar. Charisma +2 Constitution +1, an insanely strong racial suite of abilities that includes Darkvision, Necrotic/Radiant resistance, free cantrip, free healing, and improbably an even stronger subrace trait in Radiant Consumption that deals a stupid amount of damage. You also later get the best racial fear in Angelic Resistance, as well as the best flavored mechanic in Angelic Guide. For any charisma based classes Scourge Aasimar is on par with the VHuman, Half Elf, and Warforged Envoy.

  • @nickwilliams8302

    I kind of like Variant Human with the Skilled feat. Get proficiency with all social skills for a great face character.
    Pretty much the only real downside to Human is the lack of Darkvision, but you can just take Devil's Sight at 2nd level.
    Although Changeling GOO Warlock is pretty cool. For pretty much the same reasons: you get to leverage secondary benefits off of that primary CHA stat.
    As for Drow, rather than say that they were "tempted" to take on a Pact, what if their Matron Mother just straight-up said to one of her sons, "You're making this deal, you useless baggage."? Also, I think GOO is just as likely for an Underdark-based race. Suppose the Pact came about as part of some House alliance with a Mind Flayer colony? As part of the alliance, the Illithids give their allies instructions on how to contact the Far Realm.
    Yuan-ti? Yeah, they make great Warlocks, and the Night Serpent could be a great Patron. But how do you fit that character into a party?

    I build my favorite warlock not long ago (but did not have the time to play it) he is an Aassimar (protector) Celestial pact. He follows a servant of the god of justice (or whatever the equivalent of it is in the given universe) and his celestial origin is coming from the same god (no he isn't directly made the pact with his ancestor) with Acolyte, Inquisitor, Cloistered Scholar or Urchin background. His actual background is he was orphaned at an early age and survived however he could until he meets his guardian, who sent him to the church, they pick up he is special, and start to train him when they learn who he follows, they send him to another one where he started to learn to be a servant of the given god, but he with his life experience has a slightly different view on laws than the others (his time as a street urchin and things he was forced to do, like steal food and things like that) and that pushed him from the others, and lastly made his pact with his guardian, and got expelled for being a warlock (even though he is a celestial one)

  • @JenoPaciano
    @JenoPaciano 5 лет назад

    One thing I want to add: best depends on what you're trying to do with the character. A Hexblade Blade Pact warlock can get away with minimal charisma and instead spend spell slots on things like armor of agathys, shadow of moil, and eldritch smite. That would leave the character free to pump Dex or Str, and there are good reasons to do so. Consider the damage output of such a character in a dim cave wielding a Shadow Blade.

    Like, the Warlocks Patron, basically wants the Warlock to just worship them, not really a lot mind you, but more, saying that the Patron is a thing, that they are cool, and the Patron can totally do these things if you accept..
    No blood sacrifices, just exposure and sometimes a sacrifice of a bit of your lunch ala Percy Jackson...

And the "Modern" Patron (Ghost in the Machine) I feel falls into the same category as Hexblade, Seeker, Undying with it dependent on the situation.

    I’ve recently started getting players that want Dragon and other animal lords as Warlock patrons and it’s been a blast. If you want cool dragon patrons, look to the Prismatic and Force dragons from 3RD edition. They’re practically demigods that can have some real fun play styles. You can resin Old God or Archfey warlock spells and give players breath weapons and chromatic and prismatic spheres.
    But other animal lords will require a bit of work. If the player wants the Primarch orf Salamanders as a patron, might need to change damage types to poison and give water breathing and some kind of protective skin slime ability.
    One of the most fun things I did for one of my players was I gave their Mountain Serpent pact warlock basically an Evasion move called “Skin Shed” where they basically shed a layer of skin that gets left where they were when an enemy attacks. They take half damage and can recover by hit dice but the next attack against them has advantage. I also have them longer reach on weapon attacks with melee weapons. So far it could use a couple tweaks but they’re having fun.

    13:30 to 16:00.
    Good to hear that y'all mentioned the Eladrin for a Warlock class, but I think another patron to consider for them, aside from the Fey as your Patron (especially if the Eladrin is of the Winter Court originally), is Pact of the Undying, with the Undying Court of Aerneal as your Patron.
    Elves normally live 750 to 800 years. Running with a Pact of the Undying would, starting at Level 10 (via the Undying Nature class feature), extend their lifetime out to 7500 to 8000 years, effectively. Coupled with a Potion of Longevity consumed prior to leveling up to level 10, an Eladrin Winter and/or Summer Elf could (in theory) reduce their age another 6 to 12 human years, which would translate to another 60 to 120 years of life in terms of character years.
    Further, going the route of Necromancy, it could be argued that, with some help from the Undying Court of Aerneal, that a Pact of the Undying could eventually find the secrets to true immortality without having to go the route of traditional Lichdom... Although an Archlich isn't necessarily evil (as per Forgotten Realms), it could also prove to be interesting and useful all the same, assuming the DM allows it in the first place.

      The Spell Secrets and Destructive Wrath combo lets you cast every spell as Lightning at max damage. So basically I was a Storm Sorcerer robot in Heavy Armor and Shield, flying around the battlefield, shooting Twin Lightning Disintegrates at max damage, annihilating mooks with Chain Lightning and Lightning Fireball, and shooting Lightning Eldritch Blasts from my finger gun.

He had Giblets the Imp (his favorite) along with a few others but Giblets had a weird lucky streak when it came to a certain command "Bite them in the dick!" which 6 times in a row naturally crit. First time was in the tavern we we're all meeting in (I have a weird habit of ruining these) and while Giblets was stealing gold the party Paladin notices my Warlock getting more coins on the table and starts to interrogate him. Things escalate and Giblets who is under the table get that panicked order shouted at her winds up almost straight up killing the guy. Not long after that we all left with an unconscious paladin and in the tavern were 4 dead guards filled with Eldritch Blast and Stinger wounds in their corpses. Still not the worst tavern intro I've caused but not purposefully it's just shit breaks down this way.

    the lore I gave to my world as to the why of the pacts existing. is that if the patrons give a seed of power to a mortal, it will be theirs. and it will grow with them, far far faster than that bit of power would in the hands of the patron. so for them it's like farming. when the warlock dies they get their power back, and it will have grown. even if you only gained one level, that might be the amount of power increase that they would see in a century. if you make it to level 20, then that's an eon of waiting they'd have to do. so if they shear of a shred of power and make a few dozen warlocks, then as long as even half of them make it to even level 2. the patron sees a power boost.

At the end of the Campaign (Dystopion Alternate Reality to Nerdarchy's Campaign World), while the rest of the group brought back the good & neutral Deities, but Character (whom at the beginning of the campaign was 1 of Asmodeus's Top Generals) chose to take in all of the powers of the Archdevil's & Demonic Deities. This'll sort of be playing out in the D&D Group's next Campaign (which I'm DM'ing).

      But my previous Warlocks & the ones I create for 1-shots, I tend to either go straight Aasimar [Fallen] or sort of fit the Race to the Patron that I choose for the Warlock, so that it sort of flows/fits thematically which how I created the Warlock.
      But beyond "creating thematic" Warlocks, to capitalize on the "more bang for your buck" (ie Min/Maxing) definitely Races that would give +2 to Charisma (I do love the UA Abyssal Tiefling as they get extra Spells that aren't "tied" to the 4x 5th Level Spell Slots that Warlocks get towards the higher levels.) However if you decide to go Hexblade, then perhaps look at the Races that would give bonus to Strength or Constitution as the chances of you really being up close in on the action is higher.

Dark Elves give you a lot of spell options to supplement the limited Warlock spells.

    I know you coverd half elves but think about how good of a backstory you can make withh a half elf becoming either a fey or hexblade wannabe bladesinger. Maybe they have insecurities by not being a pure elf or were passed upfor being a bladesinger because of their race or maybe they don't want to hurt their family by dying so young and they go with undying pact possibly through a balenorn. this isnt a case of the half elves being mechanicly set up for it theyre set up thematicly with the possiblity of wanting some connection with their elven family more so then most of the other races. the teifling and celestial likely get it because the patrons seek them out while a half elf seeks out their patron its a difffernt dynamic.

    I honestly feel that your overall views towards the 'Generalist' races really hurt your analysis in this particular case. Specifically with regards to the half-elf. It is the undisputed choice statistically. You either get additional skills or another cool ability from your half elf nature. Additionally, it's easy to weave a backstory that incorporates any warlock patron you can imagine. Since you seem to be basing the best class in this case on theme. Wouldn't it be better to have a character that you could fit into any theme with a minimum of fuss?

    The winged variant Tieflings are still BY FAR the best option in my opinion. Tieflings are already pretty much uncontested as the ideal Warlock race from a purely statistical perspective thanks to their charisma and intelligence boosts, and now they get to ditch their fairly useless Infernal Legacy abilities for 30 feet of flight that is not only insanely powerful for early game puzzle solving, but also pairs hilariously well with max-range eldritch blast builds because you can just fly up and provide air support from a distance that leaves you completely unchallengeable by 99% of the creatures in the game. Obviously this is an incredibly uncommon situation to be in that any DM can easily rectify by changing the setting of the campaign or the layout of enemies, but when you do get the chance to go off with it, it's truly incredible.
    Also, it's not even just a super niche build. Stuff like Spell Sniper and the Sorcerer's metamagic are incredibly powerful in basically every combat situation and Charisma is basically just the definitive "roleplaying" stat, so it's not like you're locked into one role that's either game breaking or useless depending on what direction the story takes. Honestly, I kinda think this race/class combo is a little too good at times. It's far from game breaking or anything like that compared to plenty of other builds out there, but it just fits so perfectly together that it doesn't really feel as rewarding to use as something more unique...until you finally get the chance to break out your attack helicopter mode, that is.

    • @M0ebius

    • @ChunkyTheClown
      @ChunkyTheClown 5 лет назад +2

      M0ebius it doesn’t break the game if your DM knows what they’re doing and can roll with the punches and adapt to tone down flight’s power naturally without making it useless. It’s very dangerous for new or unconfident DMs, however, as it’s very easy to over or under compensate for a flying character and ruin the experience for either the player or their party in the process, I would highly recommend thinking things through before you take a race that can fly at first level. It’s one of those abilities that goes beyond simple power and instead dictates how the campaign will be run in general, so you should always be mindful of how it will affect your entire party when you use it, however by no means is it overpowered on its own.

    • @M0ebius
      @M0ebius 5 лет назад

      David Bruder Even in the hands of an experienced DM one player with flight warps everyone else’s experience. DMs tend to over or under compensate because dealing with flight takes too much processing power that could otherwise go towards story/NPC etc.

    thematically, I just can't come to terms with a Warlock that's good aligned. Celestial patrons just don't do it for me for Warlock. Fey I'm a bit more indifferent on but I prefer Warlock to be Abyssal or Infernal in nature. If you serve a good aligned deity or patron of great power, there are already two classes for that already. Cleric or Paladin already have that job down. I never saw the need to expand Warlock into their territories.
    Also, initially Warlocks sold their souls for power with the understanding that debt will be collected. They were basically Faust. It was cool. Selling your soul to a patron who will damn you by making you run through the fields of Elysion with the unicorns and angels doesn't sound like it has enough of a downside to it...

      I'm really into Lovecraftian stuff, and there's a pact which, because other worldly entities behave in a way that sane beings of our world cannot comprehend, and would go mad if attempted, make for an option for a good aligned character once you work out the story explanation.
      The pact with the Great Old One as stated in the books can happen with out the character even knowing they've made one, or the Great Old One might not even acknowledge or notice the character. Also the purpose of the pact might be completely obscure or incomprehensible to the character. Maybe saving innocent lives is part of the patron's will because they have a much bigger plan for those individuals? Maybe stealing is something the patron doesn't want you to do because said item will lead to the owner's demise or conflict with another entity? Maybe you needed to blast that one bandit to pieces because his entrails will soil the dirt in a specific manner and create a butterfly effect down the years for something favorable to what the patron wants?

    Issue with warlock... eldritch blast is too freaking OP, nothing else a warlock does is in any way relevant anymore. Take Hexblade for example, the master melee caster, well, even with all the class features and invocations, and all the other boosts... melee combat is still only going to be as good as (never better) than eldritch blast, the default base ability. And at higher levels (above 11), eldritch blast gets three blasts per cast, and shoots out ahead of melee, never to look back.

I understand their floating bonuses make them good at anything, but some classes fit them better or worse for lore or ability reasons as well, and you guys never touch on those, because you write them off as "good at everything". I expected half-elf to get at least a special mention during your write off this time, though, because of their natural +2 to charisma. I play a half-elf hexblade, and the hexwarrior ability makes it so absolutely everything I do is charisma based. So the floating +1's dont mean as much as you think, the fixed +2 Cha is waaaaay more important. I feel like waving half-elf off in general, but in this particular instance especially, is kind of a disservice.
