Arcade version please! That version was so much fun. It wasn't a common cabinet in my area either. For years I had no idea it even existed until my family went on a trip to Las Vegas. I found it at this wacky resort/casino near the state line called Buffalo Bills. The main attraction was the tallest roller coaster in the world at the time, Desperado. And while we did ride the coaster, finding an arcade version of Battletoads was somehow way more exciting to me as a kid.
I remember getting this game for my 7th birthday. It started out with excitement and ended with major disappointment. My parents ended up returning the game because it was so hard. Baby me was not ready for Turbo Tunnels. 😂
9:40 People often wonder, we know what a first person perspective game is like, we know what a third person perspective game is like, but how a second person perspective game would look like? I always tell them to check out this boss fight from Battletoads, this is imo how a second person perspective game would look like.
As a child in the 90s I get to almost the ending of the snake level. And never play it again. It's still a thorn in my hearth not beign capable of finish that beautiful game... I know I'm not alone in this, but still
the snake level is the furthest I've made it too....at least without the NES Game Genie anyway. Even with Rare Replay's rewind feature I can't seem to beat the snake level....
The original Battletoads took the aesthetics of 80's cartoons to appeal to the kids of the era, and this new art style reflects the cartoons of today. I don't see an issue with that at all.
Another great retrogame history. Made by possible the best narrator. I watch so much of your content that I ended up becoming one of your Paytreon supporters. You are all worth it.
I remember renting this from a local Blockbuster during a school summer break. Dived in, and was not ready for the crazy challenge. Never completed it, but it was fun. And finding out, you could hurt your friends HP during the journey. That was pretty groundbreaking. Excellent coverage of this amazing classic. Cannot believe it's coming back.
Loved Battletoads back in the day and I appreciated it's difficulty, just like I loved Ghouls 'n Ghosts. I played the Gameboy version the most and would be cool if you covered this one and the other versions mentioned as well.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit? was one my grandfather's favorite for the Nes and thinking back he also always played Festers Quest. Both were maddening to play and seem impossible to beat imo. He beat both. He didn't even have electricity as a child, living in extreme poverty in the Ozark mountains. RIP Grandpa JIm, you were the OG Gamer! Thanks for jogging good memories.
I thought I was getting a beat em' up with Battletoads but quickly realized it was much more. Most people I knew that played Battletoads couldn't make it past the turbo tunnel. I made it past that but the game just got harder from there. It's 1/4 beat em'up 3/4 crucible levels, only through trial and error can you beat the game which there is a lot of trial and error. Props to TMR that has mastered this game because it is hard as hell and well deserves the honor of being one, if not the hardest game on the NES.
I will take any videos on any other installments in the series you decide to do. I didn't even know there was an arcade game until years later. Wouldn't mind learning more about it. With the new game coming out now is a good time for toads.
Funny thing about the Battletoads cartoon pilot is that it was written by one of the writers from the Ninja Turtles cartoon... who's name just happened to be David Wise!
21:01 "The game would recieve it's own short-lived TV show, just like the turtles." The Battletoads cartoon was only one pilot episode that never took off. The original TMNT cartoon series lasted from 1987 - 1997. That proposed Battletoads cartoon pilot was really bad.
I often overlook this game. I might say Battletoads is one of the three best beat em ups for the NES, along with Double Dragon II, and River City Ransom. But it's also a platformer too so.......
TOADALLY RAD! Out of all the Battletoads related games, I enjoyed the original NES version the most, despite the fact that it absolutely humiliated me as a kid, thanks to the seemingly impossible Turbo-Tunnel level hahaha! I'm glad that I gave it another chance as an adult and paid it back in full :). It's definitely one of the hardest video games to beat at first, due to its mostly trial and error nature. The player has to memorize virtually everything, in order to be able to get further. The fact that the game only offers several continues does not make it any easier either. Battletoads should have at least given the player infinite continues, like with other brutally challenging titles such as Ghosts 'n Goblins. However, based on the nature of Battletoads, it was not intended to be played by children, so perhaps that is why they opted for few continues. It could also just be a Rare trait, as they typically don't offer infinite continues in their older games, but later included save options of course.
Wow, the arcade version looks AWESOME! I swear I saw one in arcades that was much simpler- I wonder if they just stuck an SNES version in there or something. I would love a focus on that. Good review overall- I remember finding the game awesome for the first stage, but just too blisteringly difficult for the next two- nobody I know has EVER finished the infamous "Speederbike" stage, which you can probably tell by the fact that the several, MORE DIFFICULT stages, are nowhere near as famous as that one for difficulty- nobody ever reached them! I didn't see Double Dragon & Battletoads being mentioned- that one was rough going, too. It's odd to me how they never carried the franchise on after a point and just let it die- I guess they had bigger fish to fry by the mid-90s.
Hatman, glad you bring out the details. I heard about the difficulty the game has due the dude who designed it being quite great and he wanted something hard to test his reflexes. I think Kev Bayles says it on the Rare Replay unlockable interview and its great that you included it here. I just thought Rare were a bunch of sados.

Its probably the easiest but I think it's the most fun but one rare replay you can put infinite coins in so it's not that hard in rare
I miss sexy female character designs in the west.
Im sure that would be too offensive these days,
There's a reason why 95% of the games I play aren't older than 2009.
Those designs still exist today you know. 😑
Shiny Neko In old games? Yeah. It’s why there’s been such a huge push toward “retro gaming” in the west.
Are we simply not gonna talk about the BATTLETOADS PAUSE MUSIC?? Ok, I was just checking is all.
