"If you dont feel awkward that means you're not doing anything differently." Awesome note
Bill,
This was the first time I heard back on what we practiced, and I gotta say, it's totally different than what I expected! I know I've got a ways to go, but your coaching is evident...I'm pleasantly surprised my friend. Can't thank Bill enough for the help, and hope to be able to continue to work with him well into the future!
Sam...The pleasure was all mine. You've have loads of talent. It's fun to watch you discover just how versatile you can be!
This was amazing!
Fuggen awesome! You sound great!! The advice Bill gave here is perfect. I literally believe you with the flatter tone. However, I also loved your announcer voice too, but for this ad the flatter tonality takes the ticket. I wish I had some extra money to hire Bill. Someday. Great video and thank you for allowing this to be shared. Priceless!! Great voice all around!!!
You're an awesome talent Sam! I got a lot out of watching you be coached. :)
Hi Sam & Bill great vid. I am sorta just starting out and this was very helpful for me. Any updates on your career Sam ? Thanks.
after watching this, I did an audition and got some great and inspiring feedback. The client said out of 50, he liked mine the best. Thanks Bill.
Don't be embarrassed for him. Tip your hat. What a great example of coaching, and having the proper attitude to receive it. One of the best questions I ever fielded in a job interview was, "Are you coachable?"
I absolutely loved how you coached him. I actually got excited too as he went on with your guiding. I do public scripture reading and oh how I wish you coached me. In any case I have learnt a lot with this. Thank you. Cleopatra from Zimbabwe
Can't tell you how many hours of video like this I have watched. Finally pulled the trigger on this field. Was able to get all my gear used through Guitar Center. $500 and I have, hopefully, a new career.
Great instruction Bill! I find myself falling into that announcer realm...this helps tremendously!
Thank you Sam for being vulnerable enough to share this with us all. I need to constantly learn more about myself!
It is rare to see such an extraordinary talent on both ends of the spectrum. Bill’s articulate instruction and creative insight into a lesson plan is truly an “Art-Form”. The only way to teach this is to have a vision and understanding of what a finished product will sound like and be able to clearly articulate and demonstrate to the student what is desired. Sam was taken 180 degrees in as little as 10 minutes and the talent to do this is only a reflection of his capabilities. He will be a force to contend with in a highly competitive market place. As he continues to polish his delivery, new doors of opportunity will open and he will be highly successful if he stays the course. The dynamics of delivery is a perishable skill and we all must continue to practice to retain the skills necessary to be successful. Thank you Bill for sharing your teaching expertise and many thanks to Sam for hanging in there and trying something new and different so that we all may learn through him. You’re both awesome!
Dan . . . I truly appreciate your kind remarks. There are few things more satisfing than to work with someone (like Sam) who has tremendous ability and the humility and desire to take direction. It was exciting to watch the final read evolve. Sam has an exciting future. As a matter of fact, many people have the potential for an exciting future. I only hope, like Sam, they have the courage to pursue it!
When the guy is just talking to Bill, he sounds great. I would have like to have heard how he sounds if Bill just had him say, "You know, Bill, when you were born to battle the elements … " and jut have him tell it to him like it was part of their conversation,. I bet he would have sounded great the first read. I do that a lot. I just start off a read by saying something like, "Hey, Dave, Alan told me that …" and more often than not I ending up with my first take being the best one. I really enjoyed watching them work together.
"Great Job", just wanted to say Thanks to the both of you for sharing the Knowledge!!!
Very cool!!! It illustrates when you train with a successful, working voice over talent, successful results are not far away. Thank both of you for sharing that session!
Thanks for sharing this, to both Bill and Sam. This is exactly the problem I'm having with my reads and is immensely helpful.
Awesome! I can't wait to get the info for the next class!!!
This is great!! Thanks for letting us sit in.
That was excellent. Sam's very good, and you were able to bring out a very different dimension of his personality
Thank you for such a priceless example. Cheers from Indonesia.
Sam, you have a great voice!! Thanks for posting this video Bill, it's really helpful.
Bill, I loved how you kept working with him, giving him direction and in a very kind way, yet knowing that it wasn't quite what you were looking for, until it was.
Excellent teaching style (coming from a Kindergarten teacher.) :)
Thank you, Sam, for letting us see the process.
your an awesome coach from what I see, extremely informative and instructional. Very down to earth. Fantastic coaching .👏🏽👏🏽💯
Bill I find these videos fabulously helpful...Thank You.
All the best from Ireland
Mark
Hey Mark...I appreciate you checking them out! I'm already looking forward to next week's video :-)
I remember when this was brand new. Thank you, Mr DeWees, for your coaching back in 2014. You helped me to get started. Peace and long life!
Bill' advice you gave to your student in this video just helped me book a voice over job. Thank you!
That's great news Jonathan...congrats!
Amazing video, i learned so much! And an amazing job by Sam! You have an incredible voice and did an awesome job!!!
Bill, you are the guru, and Sam, I felt the same pressure I feel with directors taking me to new places when I read for them. Hats off to you both!
Because of the isolation we usually experience when working, it can be a lot of fun to work with a director. I had an ISDN session today for a series of commercials. The director really worked me hard...but I had a BLAST!
Listening to the script, I'm hearing it scoff at the idea of snow. Not laughing at it, but having more of a 'pfft!' kind of attitude.
This is a great, insightful video! Thank you both for sharing!
Very insightful Bill. Thanks for sharing this!
Here there Tom...always my pleasure!
I will be more than likely using your services here soon!
Thanks for sharing...that was brilliant...
Oh goodness! its crazy how he can make his voice sound like a real tv sped up annoucer guy. Amazing. 🤯
Awesome ! Thanks for sharing
Free lesson?! Yes please and thank you Bill!
Thanks Bill appreciate ❤️
Fascinating.
Bill, you are a complete pro.
Great lesson!
Thanks! That was a great process to watch. I struggle with the "real" read and pulling back on the "selly" voice. It is cool to see (and hear) just how flat you can go and still have loads of depth and emotion in the read.
Sean...It really is amazing how powerfully you can communicate when you don't sound like you're really trying that hard!
Very Good Stuff !! Thanks Bill. And thanks to Sam for taking one for the team !
Sam represents a lot of guys/gals who have the "right stuff" but just need a bit of direction to realize their full potential. I'm glad you enjoyed!
Sam,
I didn't see that coming after hearing your first read. If you layered your last read with video and a music bed, the commercial would kill. Well done!
Biiiiiill, EPIC...
I agree Tim....I think it would have been a REAL revelation to have heard/seen it as a finished production!
Bill DeWees Yes, yes it would...
Fabulous Bill! Thanks to you both for sharing this session. Great reminder that good talent listens to the story.
A most excellent lesson.
This sneak peek needs more attention...or, maybe not. You're basically giving away the gold, Bill. Thanks for sharing.
Well done, Sam!
This is gold!
You are a damn good teacher. Bravo.
Wow! Definitely heard the difference!!
Very helpful video! Thanks! By the way, did you guys coordinate the matching red v-neck shirts? ;) Great stuff!
I have to still respect you though you are very good and an awesome teacher!
Sam, way to step out of your comfort zone. Bill that was some great coaching getting Sam from selling it to me, to telling it to me. Great video and thank you to both of you for sharing your session.
Authenticity counts. Great lesson. I notice in conversations, I have to think about not trying to sell. Just be a real person.
Bill and Sam--Pat Fraley did this with me in that he had me read so flat I sounded Catatonic! Building from that is a challenge but you know you have nailed it in the playback. Good lesson!
Hardee's used a low-energy VO years ago...for years!
Hey Sam. I took your first and last reads and layered them over the commercial. You and others can view it here: Sam Arctic Spot Before and After
Thanks VOTG! When you put the vo to video/music it really highlights the significant difference between the 2 reads.
Bill DeWees Thanks, Bill. Even though the first read has better audio quality (Skype was in a better mood), you can really hear the contrast of the before and after in your coaching. Sam sounds like he really means business on that second video. Well done, Sam! And Bill!
Hi Bill & Sam, I wondering what brand of mic Sam is using? Also, it is interesting how you change the inflection in the read! very informative. Thanks!
Great to see the process. I think a good way to approach it is like an actor approaches a scene. It's conversational like you're sharing something with a friend. Like asking yourself who am I, who am I talking to, and why am I saying what I'm saying. Then you don't focus on inflections or how you're reading it but instead naturally come across like you're really communicating with someone and sharing with them something of value. Without being too natural of course, like with ums and uhs of natural conversation - but with a quality voice and meaning. Otherwise doing it flatter or with less inflections or with more this or more that will still not sound as real as with real meaning. Just my opinion coming from an actor's point of view. I'm not a professional voice over talent like yourself. So, just my opinion here. I'm really enjoying all your great videos.
@8:25 I heard I better delivery as well Wow Bill that was awesome and best of wishes to Sam
So true, Bill...we need to be challenged.
Excellent.
Thanks for checking out the video Adrian!
Thanks for this little sample of your tutelage, Bill. It's very valuable. I was actually sitting here working along with you guys and learning more about my own voice.
Bill - great stuff there! I'm also learning the same stuff in my coaching sessions (i.e. - avoiding the "narration gear" as my teacher calls it). Sam - loved watching you discover your own breakthrough. We're on the same path brother - enjoy it, much success to you!
Was this an actual job of Sam's or just a practice read? I would love the background music to practice with. Robert Frost is amazing!
Where can I find a list of Mock scripts; for my practice?
Bill .... I don't think Sam was Born to Battle the Elements :) .
Brilliant video and I'm just kidding, Sam is a great guy ,Best wishes from Ireland.Mark
Thanks Mark! ;-)
Epic!
Poor Sam! lol. I'm just kidding, that was a good session. I appreciate him letting us see it. "Announcers tend to focus on the sound of their voice; good voice talent listen to the story." That's a keeper. I also appreciated the distinction between "cool" and "smooth." I never thought about it before, but it's true those styles aren't mutually inclusive.
Bill, did you two get together on the red v-neck shirts?...LOL
Would you recommend people who want to get into VO go out and buy a XLR mic or are there other steps before spending that much money ?
I wouldn't get a usb Mic setup unless it's a 3.0 usb. You won't get the latency with an xlr cable, however you can't just get any cable. Monster xlr cables are great have. Not only that, you get better sound quality with a condenser microphone and an interface recorder. You will only need between 50khz and beyond to amazing recorderings with your interface. Get a pop filter too! Soundproof as much as you can. Condenser microphones pick up any noise in the room. It makes a huge difference in your sound.
Hi Bill. I've been getting myself ready to get into VO-business for the past few months., building a very low-budget "recording box", getting the right equipment and everything most VO-people probably went through starting out. Thank you for you amazing videos. I know I have a lot to learn still but you are an amazing help so far.
Bill, this video reminds me of our sessions. It's great. I'm glad that Sam let you put this up, because I know there's a lot of us that either go too much or too little. There's definitely some things in this one that I know I can apply to myself.
I am a bit interested in your course and have some questions. Is there a way to contact you with a few questions?
11:50-I'd hate to be winter right now
the link to your training program is dead. would like to get info and pricing on your blueprint program
Sorry about that. Try this: calendly.com/fredgleeck/15-minute-vo-blueprint-call?month=2022-08
This video makes it pretty apparent that Bill is not an actor and is realistically focused on the end goal - the product
Greetings from the future. Where is Sam now? Hope all is well.
I got soooooo much from this clip.
Thank you, Bill, for making this lesson accessible for us noobies!
this would work in any situation, sick
Hi Bill! I loved your advise and I could completely hear the difference that made it work. He tends to be concentrating on the annunciation of each word rather than the feeling he should be projecting. I loved the end result as I actually started believing in him!! Perfect. I feel a connection to my mic in that I am feeling the script and narrating the word off the page and into my listener.......I like it best because I am alone in my studio without any distractions! That’s my feeling about narrating and bringing my emotions from page to listener!!!
.... Like a full minute of blank space at the end... Watched it expecting something...
Great advice as always Bill, the voice of sense and reason in the crazy world of V/O's we live in.
Love your line about doing it from your basement and going all around the world from a small box (booth) plus we don't even need our passports thanks to the technology. I hear you brother, that's my life too from Down Under.
Go Ohio!
like Sam Elliot cool?
Pealing it back. Avoid the announcer "puker" voice. Start flat and embellish as needed. Like starting out with soup that is too salty. Start bland and "salt" to taste.
