My great uncle was the driver of this exact tank in WW2. Him and his crew were killed by the Hitler youth using a Panzerfaust (German Anti-Tank Round Launcher) When they were taking the German city of Leipzig on April 18th 1945. He was 25 years old and a member of the 741st Tank battalion attached to the 2nd. Infantry Division. My great uncle died 17 days before the German Field marshal Wilhelm Keitel had the German Army surrender on 8 May 1945. The green and red lights you see when they are shooting machine guns a called tracer rounds and are placed about every 10 rounds. They’re built with a small pyrotechnic charge in their base. When fired, the pyrotechnic composition is ignited by the burning powder and burns very brightly, making the projectile trajectory visible to the naked eye. This allows the shooter to visually trace the trajectory of the projectile and make necessary ballistic corrections. As for the German soldier letting Norman go at the end, I’ve always felt that he was a lot like Norman and hated killing so, he did what his conscience told him to do.

The draft age started out ages 19 to 26. During the war the age would be dropped to 18 and in increments raised to 46. If you were fit,fit you went to combat units regardless of age. Norman is going through what most recruits experience if they are sent to an experienced unit as a replacement. The original guys have already lost friends and aren't feeling very friendly about new arrivals, who don't know anything. They also don't want to get to know the replacement because replacements die -again, because they don't know anything. What makes it worse is that this late in the war, all the combat units had taken losses and were short of men, so they were shoving half-trained recruits forward to fill the gaps. Norman arrives at the camp after 8 weeks in the army=he must have been shipped out immediately after finishing basic training, without any advanced training, because crossing the atlantic and getting to the front would have taken a couple of weeks.

You asked a question about "why were they 'scoring' the shells?"... I looked up the answer, and it WAS for what I thought it was:
"In the movie "Fury," scoring artillery shells serves a practical purpose in the context of warfare. The act of scoring the shells, which involves making a series of cuts or grooves in the casing, is intended to create a more effective fragmentation pattern upon detonation. This increases the lethality of the shell by ensuring that it breaks apart into smaller, more deadly shrapnel pieces that can inflict greater damage on enemy troops and equipment.
The practice reflects the gritty realism of the film, showcasing the resourcefulness and ingenuity of soldiers in combat situations. It also emphasizes the harsh realities of war, where soldiers must often make do with limited resources and find ways to enhance their effectiveness in battle. Overall, the scoring of artillery shells symbolizes the desperate measures taken by soldiers to survive and succeed in the brutal environment of World War II.

In German military speak, it's shorthand for "Panzerkampfwagen", which translates roughly to "armored fighting vehicle".)

When you in the army you get qualified to use a basic rifle, other weapons have training on how to use them, that said if youre a clerk or whatever basically the only time you ever touch a weapon is in basic training, after that....
Basic training usually consists of basic survival skills, learning drill movement, the processes in which the army uses to do business, some weapon time, and mostly just how to be in the army. After that is usually job specific training so if you are infrantryman or tank crewman you go do another course to learn how to do all the skills related to that. My grandfather's both fought honorably, one in France . Yes, many over years had seen what Hitler was doing to Europe at the time. So many brave young, intelligent ,strong men went off to fight for their country. When the men returned, if still in one piece physically, many , including my one grandfather had nightmares and had to sleep separately from his wife his entire life.

the german tank used (yes there was CGI fighting) is the famous Tiger T131. the only functional Tiger tank in the world. it can kill a Sherman tank from over 2km away.

A lot of the people who were drafted weren’t soldiers to begin with, just everyday people with no training at Allan they were literally handed a gun and told to shoot.

The German tanks were not really all that technologically superior, most were about on par with the Sherman but the Sherman was built for easy of manufacture and maintenance plus it had to fit into the logistical needs of moving large amounts of equipment across oceans. The Germans didn't have that issue and they needed more defensive tanks to fight superior numbers on both fronts. The Panther and Tiger tanks did have better armour though the latter Shermans were about on par with the Tiger I for effective frontal armour but the Tigers had much bigger guns. However, there were very few Tigers, not even that many Panthers, the majority of the tanks they faced were PzIV's and SPGs(tank destroyers), which the Sherman could easily deal with.

In combat, when needing to releave yourself, if you want safety, pee where your comrades can see you. If you want privacy, go pee where your comrades can't see you. You can't have both in the middle of combat.

I'm still thinking about how you two both thought that Norman was too young; actually, a lot of the young men who fought lied about their age, saying they were 18 when they were closer to 15 or 16 (they wanted to fight for their country). And yeah, the treatment of POWs on both sides was atrocious.

Upgunned late model M4/76mm like 'Fury' had enhanced cannons, armor and ammo storage protection, and were far less vulnerable as depicted here. The earlier M4/75mm versions remained popular, as the ammo their 75mm cannons fired ammo that was far more effectiive against the German anti-tank gun crews who, compared to German tanks, remained their main threat.
Last encounter would have ended nearly instantly as massed infantry with or without Panzerfausts are any tank's nemesis.

I know you two only really watch movies and shows, but there is a channel, that allows reactions. he talks about american history and how things went, he recently talked about how crazy WWII was in one of his recent videos, in WWII america basically had no army we had the 19th largest military in the world. portugal was 18 which is the size of one of the U.S's 50 states. we had 150,000 soilders in the whole military, at our peak we had 16 million total during WWII. we were sending 18 y.os who had got a few weeks of training and then got sent out to the front line to now kill. at this time and in this county. they never saw death, other then maybe a passing of a loved one. that was the majority.

      Do not be deceived!!
Those who do not believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ are still under condemnation for their sins!
      John 3:18
      Jesus Christ is God!
      John 1:1
You are in my prayers that you come to repentance and believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ: in His death burial and resurrection on the third day for your justification and mine that we don’t deserve! Those who believe this TRUTH have everlasting life, those who deny this TRUTH will die in their sins!
These are the words of Jesus Christ Himself: Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I AM HE, you will die in your sins.
      John 8:24
REPENT and BELIEVE the gospel of your salvation before it’s too late!!

What you have to understand about Christians, it's that we make a clear distinction between those who devotes their lives to god, and the commoners who are "secular", which means "live in the century". That's why often, you will find people not necessarily abiding to strict religious principle, contrary to clerics who will apply them 100%. Ex: we know we shouldn't drink by religious principles, but we still do, it's in the culture. Now at first you would think that it makes us hypocritical, and that most of the population just don't follow God, but the principle is that true goodness comes from the conscious choice between good and evil. In other words, you need to have free will and not be forced into religion. It's also a recognition that we are all sinners, and that our clerics are there to lead us to be better people, but that we don't have to be clerics ourselves, just good men. If drinking makes you a bad men, you have to stop. If not and you're able to control it, then it's okay (but in most of the times not preferable). So there's a lot of nuances in our approach to religion, and you'll see secular people sometimes bring it up as a moral perspective, a guideline to do good, but at the end of the day, only priests are bound to strict literalist behavior/clothes/etc. It's God's task to judge us in the end, not other people. Obviously, in this movie, the guy played by Shia Leboeuf is more religious than others, but he's still not a priest, he's secular, hence why takes a last sip of alcohol like his brothers for his final stance while reciting bible verses to inspire them. He's being a good and pure man, even in his sinners clothes, and we are hopeful that God will recognize that, because it was the rightful thing to do in this very moment.
