Depeche Mode The Things You Said synth cover Clavia Nord Modular G1 Atari ST Steinberg Cubase

- All drum and synth sounds produced simultaneously by the Nord Modular without any multi-tracking.
This is my attempt at creating a ‘one synth’ cover of The Things You Said, using only 4 sound patches on my Clavia Nord Modular G1 (with DSP Expansion) and sequenced in Steinberg Cubase 3.1 on my old Atari ST.
Nord Modular Patches:-
Slot A = Drums (CPU = 97.1% Poly = 1)
Slot B = Bassline and Soft Brass (CPU = 59.1% Poly = 5)
Slot C = Synth-Bells and FM Marimba (CPU = 49.7% Poly = 4)
Slot D = Vocal Pad and FM Keys (CPU = 76.8% Poly = 4)
Recorded with a medium decay ‘large hall’ reverb from my Soundcraft mixer into Logic Pro with some EQ and limiting.
The Nord Modular G1 is 16 note polyphonic (32 with the DSP expansion) and can play 4 patches at once (in Slot A, B, C and D), but when 3 or 4 patches are used simultaneously, the polyphony can quickly drop to just 1 or 2 notes per patch, depending on the complexity and CPU load of each sound patch.
The audio outputs of the Nord Modular completely mute for almost 1 second whenever a new patch is loaded, so it’s not possible to use MIDI program change messages to switch between sounds once Cubase starts playing back, so all the drum and synth sounds I created (12 sounds in total) had to fit into the 4 sound patches, by using as few sound modules as possible to keep the balance between low CPU load and usable polyphony.

As a former member of DM, I approve.
I realise this probably isn’t genuine, but if it is then that’s awesome 🤩. Either way, thanks for commenting - I really appreciate the feedback 👍
@@obsoletenoise4I think he meant the Depeche mode fan club.
Alan, how are you doing? 😮
"The Things You Said" is one of my all time favorite Depeche Mode songs. I used to listen to it non-stop on the cassette deck in my 1978 Honda Civic while driving around Providence, RI where I attended university. I also had a Vespa scooter that was a blast to cruise around on. But I usually drove my Civic just so I could listen to Music for the Masses. That might be my favorite Depeche Mode album.
You’re a legend for not only constructing this but for sharing how it was done.
Thanks - I appreciate the feedback 👍
This is really amazing work... I've always wanted a Nord Modular but never realised it could sound so so good too.
This is nothing short of stunning. Well done!
Wow … thanks for the awesome feedback 👍
reminds me of 101 live, freaking awesome, absolutely love it
Thanks 👍
PLEASE make a video about your setup and how it all hooks up and programming it!!! It looks so cool :D
Wow ! Amazing job ! I like the super retro feel with the Atari ST ! I've been trying Cubase 3 recently using an emulator, and found out that it is amazing and fun to use.
Thanks … I really appreciate the feedback 👍 Cubase is an awesome piece of software.
Extremely well programmed & a DM classic. It sounds fantastic and crystal clear recording too. Can Nord Mod users buy the multi patches from your posts? :)
Thanks - I really appreciate your feedback. It’s unlikely I’ll make any of my patches available to buy, as my videos include screenshots of all the patches, so it should be pretty easy for someone to recreate them if they wanted.
Awesome !
Hats off from a former Amiga user... and ST basher, from time to time, back in the days ;-)
Thanks 👍
this is pure nostalgia, i also owned an atari 1040ST with that same cubase daw, i didnt have a synth tough, i had a yamaha SY FM module, cheers
Atari ST Steinberg Cubase, yes babe my first production on it...Ultra cool tube bro
Very lovely! Ya killed it. If anyone reads this that has the means. We need another cloned expansion card like encore electronics.
Thanks for the feedback 👍
@@obsoletenoise4 sorry for the slight highjack, somehow I've obtained my own expansion card since you've posted this! Your track was super inspiring and very well done! Thanks for posting.
Excellent work and one of the best DM's songs.
Thanks
Well done, very nice cover! Great to see the Nord Modular get some action. And I'm a huge fan of early DM and retro gear 🎹🎸🎤💾
Awesome.
Like it, well done

Nice one, Totally amazing 🎶👍😎
Thanks 👍
Well done Sir
Thanks 👍
Wow❤
Some of my best compositions were sequenced on an Atari ST back in tha day
Very well done! Will comment more in the FB group, but thanks for sharing the closeups of the patch settings.
Thanks for the feedback 👍. Not sure what FB group you’re referring to - but I guess someone has posted a link to my youtube videos somewhere?
@@obsoletenoise4 Yeah - it was posted in a G1 group. I just added that while it would be nice to have the files available - this way (closeups of the settings in the editor) is more fun. Feels like diving into an old computer magazine to program it on our own.
mon morceau pref de DM !
👍👏Parabéns, Florianópolis Brasil
Thanks 👍

👍👍👍
💯❤👌
chers from Uruguay!. What st model have ? st fm 1mb ? i like so much your job , congrats !.
Thank you for the feedback 👍 I have various STs, but I used an Atari STE with 4mb and TOS 2.06 running Cubase 3.1 to programme everything for this video.
Where are the sounds coming from the Midi Controller or Daw ?
The Nord Modular synth is generating all the sounds, triggered by Cubase from the built-in MIDI port on the Atari.
This system generates all the sounds?
The Nord Modular is only 4 part multitimbral, so it can be difficult fitting all the sounds I need into just 4 patches, but yes, all the drum and synth sounds are coming from the Nord Modular simultaneously.
@@obsoletenoise4 Cool 😎
@@obsoletenoise4 it’s remarkable that you programmed all these sounds and patterns to come out of the Nord simultaneously. This rocks.
Thanks! 👍
