Pet Shop Boys It’s A Sin instrumental synth cover Clavia Nord Modular G1 Atari ST Steinberg Cubase
All drum and synth sounds produced simultaneously by the Nord Modular without any multi-tracking.
This is my attempt at creating a ‘one synth’ cover of It's A Sin, using only 4 sound patches on my Clavia Nord Modular G1 (with DSP Expansion) and sequenced in Steinberg Cubase 3.1 on my old Atari ST.
Nord Modular Patches:-
Slot A = Drums (CPU = 97% Poly = 1)
Slot B = FM Bassline and Arpeggio Sequence (CPU = 46.1% Poly = 3)
Slot C = Synth Strings (CPU = 43.4% Poly = 10)
Slot D = Vocal Pad (CPU = 44.2% Poly = 10)
Nord Modular audio outputs:-
1+2 = Dry / No effects
3+4 = Large Hall reverb from my Soundcraft mixer
The Nord Modular G1 is 16 note polyphonic (32 with the DSP expansion) and can play 4 patches...

Blade Runner (End Titles) by Vangelis synth cover using a couple of sounds from a Modal Electronics SKULPT synth and CRAFTsynth 2.0, sequenced in Steinberg Cubase on my old Atari ST. The 'string' sound is coming from the 4-note polyphonic SKULPT synth (mixed with some 'large hall' reverb from my Soundcraft mixer) and the baseline/white noise is coming from the CRAFTsynth 2.0 monophonic wavetabl...
Best Timing Atari Mega St With Midi 🎉 i used that amazing ...
Incredible!
Amazing stuff, this is pure craftsmanship! Thanks for providing the details in he second part of the video as well.
great work on the patches
I take it that all sounds are synthesized, including the drums? Brilliant stuff.
Great job. It’s years since I used Cubase on the Atari. I started out with Steinberg Pro 12 ( I think it was 12?) Big thumbs up
synth sounds are great...........sort of hi tech Star trek cyborg sound........ or Cyborg squash sound.... Thx
this is amazing!
So you made all the sounds with only the G1? that's great work WOW
Timing on Atari ST was legendary
That is true. That and the timing (and the slight offsets in the samples) of the Linn are an often neglected part of the sound of the 80ies. I'm sure if you look close enough you will also find a lot of timing artefacts in that aera of music that gave it some special feeling. For example: AFAIK Trevor Horn synced a Fairlight with a Synclavier and a digitally controlled 24 track tape machine. Steve Lipson developed a small computer program on a Casio handheld Basic computer to calculate all the time code conversions involved, "Lunar Bay" from Frankie goes to Hollywood started as a demo of the possibilities of that syncing these machines.
No "blabla", all essential, detailled, clean, gratz man, really good job, appreciate it
J’aime !
Tearjerkingly amazing and beautiful <3 On a technical note - is it possible to program a pitch envelope for the ending vox melody? The higher notes in the original have that grace note thing going
Vince would be proud (hopefully he'll hear this)
Jó nagy munka lehetett de nagyon jó lett. PERFETTO!
Nothing could beat the MegaSt regarding tight timing. Loved it.
more than 40 years of evolution in sound electronics for nothing... good job
Thumbs up
Impressive indeed!
overall some nice sound on it, with a little mixing tweaks on it it would be more concise. only a few things in this were detracting. This was pretty good.
Very well done. I'd agree that the sounds are not always 100% authentic, but the vibe is really there.
To begin with I didn't even know that there was a Cubase version for that ST. Amazing work and results!!
Your Nord is in very good condition, my jog wheel gets a bit stuck sometimes and one or two keys not working. Thats a very nice dynamic bass pad.
Love it, very good. Like it a lot, well done!
Oooo I like this, remembering the days of the ST and the Miggy. Love seeing how it's all put together too, that really made my day. Is it avail for d/l (the tracks)? Would love to have a mess about with this.
And no use of plugins or hardware?
Aaah the ST, it all started there for me too. Insane vid man, that was brilliant!
so you control the hardware synth via a software on the computer? I am confused. But this Nord Synth seems cool. Isn't it old af? Crazy that this has so much capability.
omg, it's unbelievable ! And I will never believe it until someone explains me how the nord modular can play more than 4 instruments at the same time if it's only 4 part multitimbral ?
Very cool indeed! I also try to use my 1040STe as often, as I have time for it. I usually use Notator SL for MIDI tracking
Marvellous work, jaw dropping recreation. As an old Amiga midi musician I appreciate the effort and time spent. I bust out an old Mac SE30 running Cubase from time to time and this inspires me to do it a bit more often 👍
Sensational
good job
Playing your track then later breaking the components down is a real treat, superb work. Thanks
Fantastic!
🔥
Hey, Claudio @Doctormix ! This could be interesting to you!
This is great!
Love this! The Atari, the Nord Modular and every effort you've just put in. Excellent! Big thanks!!!!
always loved the first gen nord modular. very nice demo!
wow, excellent version!!!
Thank you! I can finally practice that groovy bass line on my ye oldie pss-370 :D
Ficou muito bom,meus parabéns!
Where to get such an acappella?
this is talent , good job
Man cannot say what's I am most impressed of. The perfect rendition of the traks on an Atary ST, including the bass funky filtering, the leverage of old tech and the integration witht the (most) new, the amazing and complex sound engineering on the modular, the detailed 'how it's made' at the end, the result... Congrats.
Outstanding work ! Congratulations ! Would you share the Nord .PCH files so we can play with them ?
Awesome! Brings back memories to the late 80s / early 90s when I used to recreate popular music I liked with Cakewalk on my MSX(2) - anyway remember the FM Pac? - and PC - first the Adlib soundcard and later the Soundblaster series. In the 90s I bought a Roland JV30 and a Korg X3 - which I still own and work fine - and programmed them through midi as they had better sounds. Good ol' days and you revived them! Cool!
just love this song.. your cover is everybut as great as the original
