Thanks for the reminder! I just love low and slow P-47s who try to dance

Also a good reminder for this style of flight is to understand that sometimes you’ll just have to run. Every time you’re diving to make an attempt, you’re slowly losing your energy advantage. At this point, you’ll have to accept your situation and just make a run for it. The same applies if you engage the enemy at a same or a lower energy state. The characteristics of your plane make it so that you lose more energy than a more maneuverable turn fighter when applying Angle of attack.

In the nine years of playing WT, I always prefer a turn fighter over a boom and zoom plane. In fact, my favourite tactic in a turn fighter was to lure a boom and zoom planes to the deck and force them to turn fight. This the tactic all turn fighters should use against boom and zoomers. They cannot boom and zoom you because they have no where to go. The longer they turn fight you, the slower they get. Never fight a boom and zoom plane on their terms. Always fight a boom and zoom plane on your terms - on the deck.

Energy fighting is far superior to angle fighting, as having a higher energy state means you get to decide what cards to play and when you exit the fight. You also are in a way better position to avoid third parties. That’s why I love planes like the 47.

This applies to realistic battles as well. There are too many War Thunder players who don't understand even the concept of energy conservation and management, and will try to dogfight a Spitfire LF.IX in a Fw190D Dora in a flat turn fight from equal altitude.
Whoever has more energy before the engagement controls when the it happens and where. Whoever has more energy in the engagement controls when it ends. This is why I don't like the Zero, it's slow, I can't control the terms of the engagement. And this is also why I don't like the P-47 Thunderbolt, because she doesn't gain energy quickly. Once you have the energy advantage, she's alright, but getting up there is painful.
In most planes, you want to climb at least a bit so you can cash that in for speed, even in pure turn fighters like the Zero and I16 you want a few thousand feet you can play with.

Very true, that's why I find flying the Zero a masochistic challenge, since you have to be really prudent with managing your energy. But you retain the ability to cash it all in when needed.

Yeah I agree. The turnfighters prey on the impatience of other players, me included! :)
Or they swoop in into a duel brought low and dominate.
Also it's good to have good camouflage as a turnfighter.

The P47 is an absolute monster if you just have the patience to climb with it. It makes incredibly awarding moments when you get kills on pilots trying their best to avoid you from below.

I have had very good results with it! Turn with the B&Zers and energy fight with the Japanese.
